Gastro-Physics And Dietary Anti-Matter

Gastro-Physics And Dietary Anti-Matter
 by: Will Clower, Ph.D.

Do a little people-watching, next time you're in the grocery line. There's always someone with a cart, bulging with every conceivable kind of diet food. Flats of turkey bacon prop listlessly against the fat free half & half and Olestra cookies. At first glance, this is clearly someone who is completely health conscious, diet minded, and watching what they eat.
But peek beneath the basket to the lower rack – where you normally find dog food, kitty litter, and toxic chemicals – and you will see the full case of Mountain Dew. Diet foods and junk foods, rubbing wrappers in the very same cart might suggest mental illness, delusional optimism, or some other form of brain strain.
However, unbeknownst to the rest of us, these folks are actually brilliant physicists, cleverly disguised as profoundly confused shoppers, so as not to attract any attention. They throw you off their trail with very characteristic behaviors, like chasing a candy bar with a Diet Coke.
Yes, we can now release the fact that these scientists are members of the little know branch of their field known as gastro-physics, and they are actually testing a high-level theory regarding matter and anti-matter. Just as matter can be annihilated by anti-matter, they show how calories can be eliminated, obliterated, and just forgotten about altogether if you just consume them with their Universal opposite.
Oreos and skim milk cancel perfectly.
M&Ms are vaporized into the next astral plane when thrown into a trail mix bag with a few Spanish peanuts.
And then there's diet drinks … the perfect dietary anti-matter for any form of plasticized fruit rollup, gummy worms, or even weight loss candy bars.
Sorry for the dive into the messy scientific details, but there's just a bit more you should know about this physics phenomenon. The calorie cancellation must happen within a certain time frame, if you are serious about blipping away that ingot of taffy you just ate.
It's like your mother explained, logically, that swimming after quick a baloney and cheese sandwich at the beach will make you drop like a rock to the bottom of the ocean, unless you wait the required 30 minutes or so.
In just the same way, modern gastro-physicists indicate that full cancellation can only take effect if the diet product smashes into the junk food within 7.45 minutes. These guys are brilliant.
So the next time you see cleverly disguised gastro-physicists chasing their Snickers with a Diet Coke, don't harrumph. They're not as daft as they seem.

Flu Vaccine Hysteria

Flu Vaccine Hysteria
 by: Lee Cummings

Last week the media circus surrounding the flu vaccine reached a crescendo.
Half of all the flu vaccine supply is not available this year!
Why? Because the British company that supplies half of the U.S. flu vaccine supply was shut down by health officials.
Does it really matter?
Unless you are under 2 or over 65 and are in poor health, It doesn't matter.
Because of the flu vaccine shortage The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have said that healthy people under the age of 65 should do without a flu shot.
Gee, that's what we just talked about.
So even if there were enough flu vaccines, why would You be urged to get one?
The CDC just said that healthy people under the age of 65 can do without a flu shot.
Those of you who take care of your immune system Year 'round don't have anything to worry about.
The question you want to ask yourself is "Do I really want to have a live vaccine injected or inhaled into my body when my immune system is not in the best of shape?"
Before you decide just how easy this decision is to make, Let me explain a few things which will make the decision a little easier.
This years' flu vaccine is tailor made from LAST years' flu strains, so it is not going to be as effective against THIS years' flu strains.
Are you aware of all the additives in the flu vaccine and vaccines in general?
These additives are all highly toxic to the human body, let me show you …
The biggest problem you face with flu shots is that you are being injected with a number of toxic additives.
How would you like to have antifreeze injected into Your body? Don't worry, they call it ethylene glycol. Makes it sound better doesn't it?
Anyone for aluminum? (it's only to promote Antibody response) Or formaldehyde? (to kill Viruses).
Here's the best one – a mercury derivative (used as a preservative), called Thimerosal.
Are there safer alternatives to vaccines?
Of course there are. Let's go over some of the most effective proven, safe and natural ways to keep your immune system healthy no matter what season it is.
Are you aware that you can do one simple thing to easily boost your immune system?
Lose the sweets. That's right, sugar compromises the immune system.
Eat a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits and fresh organic meat protein.
Here's another one – wash your hands more often.
As many people are walking around with colds, you may be shaking hands and touching things others have.
How about those zinc gluconate lozenges you can get at any drug store? These are not only highly effective when you have already caught a cold, but also to keep Your immune system strong when those around you are sick.
Naturally, supplements and herbs have been effective for thousands of years as a proven remedy to ward off colds and flu.
And here is a list of proven natural and effective Homeopathic remedies.
Vitamin C – Be sure to get a natural form of this one
And also make sure it contains bioflavonoids to help absorption.
A good natural multi-vitamin
Echinacea
Grapefruit seed extract (GSE) which is available in liquid, tablet and capsule form.
Olive Leaf Extract
Black Elderberry Extract
And finally, as long as you are cooking, cook with plenty of fresh garlic.
These are all simple and inexpensive remedies for maintaining your best health all year long.
Naturally, the more of these remedies you combine, the more healthy benefits you will receive.
You can easily stay healthy by taking action now.

Fat Burners: The Shocking Truth

Fat Burners: The Shocking Truth
 by: Jeff Lugeanbeal

Fat Burners refer to the hundreds of products on the market today that can be purchased over the counter. Their purpose is to somehow burn off the fat by speeding up metabolism, or blocking fat in foods, or other methods.
The companies that sell these products employ savvy at marketing techniques to hook you, with bold print ads and sometimes less than believable before and after pictures.
>>>>Are these products safe?
Fat burners are not regulated by the FDA so companies can put whatever herb, vitamin, or mineral in them as long as the substance isn't illegal. I don't know of any long term studies on any one of the hundreds of fat burners on the market.
>>>>Do they work?
Many of these products have been shown to be effective for weight loss, though they may have negative side effects. Be aware these products can cause side effects such as rapid pulse, increased blood pressure, constipation, nervousness, sleeplessness, and lack of appetite.
>>>>Are they healthy to you and your weight loss goals?
The jury is still out on the health benefits of any fat burner. These products should be looked at as temporary fixes to weight loss. Most of them cause a decrease in appetite, which can lead you into a situation of not consuming enough calories on a daily basis.
If you aren't eating enough daily calories, your body responds by slowing your metabolism, storing fat, and using muscle for metabolism. This can result in you losing weight, but muscle weight instead of fat. The goal in any weight loss program should be to keep the muscle, lose the fat.
Fat burners might help you lose some weight in the short term, but once you stop taking them you run a high probability of gaining the weight back, especially if you aren't following a healthy eating plan and moderate exercise program.

The Skinny on Muscle Imbalances - Restoring Order As A Means Of Eliminating Back Pain

The Skinny on Muscle Imbalances - Restoring Order As A Means Of Eliminating Back Pain
 by: Steve Preston

There are many causes of back pain. Injury, illness, herniated disks and poor posture are just a few.
Muscle imbalances are one of the lesser side effects of improper use, posture, strain and injury, and are commonly the cause of the aches and pains associated with back pain. Unfortunately, most doctors don't diagnose muscle imbalances until it is too late.
Muscle Imbalances Defined
So what exactly is a muscle imbalance? A muscle imbalance is exactly as it sounds, an 'imbalance' or inequality that exists within the muscles. It occurs when two or more muscles in the body that oppose each other are disproportionate.
An example of a common muscle imbalance occurs in the muscles of the quadriceps and hamstrings. Most people work hard to strengthen the front part of their leg but often skimp when it comes to exercising the hamstring. A muscle imbalance in this area of the leg can result in a 'popping' sound in the knee. It can also result in back pain.
The single most common muscle imbalance leading to back pain is disproportionate abdomen to back ratio. Think of it this way... it's like a teeter totter that isn't balanced because one end is shorter than the other. It will still work but not optimally.
Not exercising the abdomen can lead to severe back pain because the abdomen supports the back.
Biology of Muscles
It will help your understanding a bit if you have an idea of how muscles work. Muscles are fibrous tissues that connect to bones in the body, supporting the function of movement. To facilitate movement muscles contract and then relax. So a muscle gets shorter and then longer in response to movement. A muscle imbalance may result in too much or too little contracting or relaxing. Or, some muscles may get too strong while others aren't strong enough and can reduce a persons' stability.
Factors Contributing to Muscle Imbalances
One of the primary causes of muscle imbalances is poor posture. If you sit for too long in a bad position or continually stand with bad posture, your muscles adapt to your posture but in a bad way resulting in imbalances.
Muscle imbalances can also result when you overuse a muscle. If you are right handed for example and use a pull lever on the job, and only pull with the right hand, the right hand/arm will be stronger than the left which presents an imbalance.
The Benefits of Exercise
The good news is that exercise can help reduce and even eliminate muscle imbalances. (If not careful however, improper training can also lead to muscle imbalances).
You can exercise weaker muscles to catch them up to stronger ones and work to correct imbalances and maintain overall stability. You can assess whether or not opposing muscles are out of balance by testing your lifting strength. Try lifting your maximum on one side and then the other.
For example, if you can lift a 10 pound weight during a bicep curl on the left side, but a 30 pound weight on the right, you have a muscle imbalance. You should enlist the assistance of a trainer when testing muscle imbalances. By working with a trainer, you can develop a fitness program that not only addresses muscle imbalances but improves overall tone and strength. Usually a combination of strength training and physical therapy or chiropractic therapy can be used to correct muscle imbalances.
Prevention
Prevention is critical when it comes to muscle imbalances and back pain. One of the best things you can to correct and prevent future injury is seek out the help of a professional trainer. A trainer can perform a physical evaluation and test the relative muscle strength you have on each side of the body. You can then work together to develop a strength training program that provides overall strength and eliminates potential problem areas.

Whipped Shea Butter & Its Many Uses

Whipped Shea Butter & Its Many Uses
 by: Lisa Maliga

Shea butter, also referred to as karite, which means "life" has been used across the African continent for centuries. It hails from Central and Western Africa. It's actually a nut fat, as it's obtained from the fruit of the kernel. Shea nuts are picked by women, then par-boiled, and sun-dried for a week in order to dehydrate the nut. This increases their storage time. The next step is to crush the dried fruit, in order to remove the skin. When the shea butter is hand crushed like this, it retains all its numerous vitamins and minerals and the nutty, smoky scent is naturally preserved. The color ranges from off white to gray to golden brown to green, depending upon the maturity of the nut. It's always refined at least once, in order to remove dirt, bits of gourd, or leaves, objects that would not be fun to apply to your skin.
In Africa, shea butter is often used as a cooking oil. Shea butter can also be used as a hair conditioner, as a way to prevent sunburn pain, to soothe cracked, dry feet and hands, especially during those skin-drying winter months or for those of you who live in a dry climate. According to noted soapmaker/author Susan Miller Cavitch, in her 1995 book The Natural Soap Book, writes: "Shea butter is gentle enough for babies and people with sensitive skin. It soothes and softens dry chapped skin, while nourishing all skin types. I have come to rely heavily upon shea butter for its effectiveness." She was using this wonderful substance, and including it in her homemade soaps, long before most people in North America had even heard of shea butter!
The texture of this life giving butter is smooth and creamy. However, since the early part of this century, a new way to make shea butter even more luxurious and soft is to blend it with high quality plant and seed oils in order to create a whipped cream like texture which glides onto your skin. Whipped Shea Butter can be made by those who know which combinations of oils and shea butter can be whipped together to create that natural moisturizer your skin needs and yet not be too heavy/greasy. Properly made whipped shea butter is light, creamy and fluffy and resembles Cool Whip yet doesn't need to be refrigerated.
In 2003 Google's search engine returned only 80 matches for whipped shea butter. Nowadays, it's over 2000! However, for those of you unfamiliar with this wonderful product, whipped shea butter is always 100% natural, containing only shea butter and vegetable/plant/seed oils and an antioxidant such as vitamin E. It can be found unscented or with added fragrances/essential oils. Whipped Shea butter doesn't have any type of wax, water, preservatives, or petroleum/mineral oils. Whipped Shea Butter is always light, creamy and fluffy, making it easily absorbed into your skin. This is one of the most versatile products available as it can be used as a hair conditioner, makeup remover, all-over moisturizer, softens cuticles, and always soothes dry or chapped skin. Lighter in weight than plain shea butter, whipped shea butter is a sumptuous yet economical way to pamper the body's largest organ – your skin.

Help for Sugar Cravings

Help for Sugar Cravings
 by: Jonni Good

Many people have asked me what foods they should eat in order to cut down on the sugar cravings. And in the past I've always had to say "I don't know."
Now, maybe I can actually offer something more hopeful.
Kicking a sugar habit is no easy chore, especially since we're surrounded by the stuff. Almost every packaged food or convenience product is made from sugar, (or white flour, which is about the same thing).
We struggle to overcome the initial reluctance to change, then we live through the two weeks of mild withdrawal symptoms, and then we have to worry about relapse when we let down our guard on a stressful day.
Sometimes it just doesn't seem fair.
Dr. Ron Rosedale may have the answer for us. He says that our sugar cravings are associated with a leptin insensitivity. Leptin is that hormone that researchers were very excited about a few years ago. They discovered that giving a small dose of this natural hormone to laboratory mice caused them to eat less, and they lost weight.
Researchers hoped that they could use leptin as the magic pill that would help obese patients get thin again, like those mice. But when they started looking at humans, they found that overweight people often have more leptin than thin people - and obese people almost always have too much.
Eating too much highly concentrated carbohydrates over a long period of time can cause an insulin insensitivity that can lead to diabetes and other health conditions. According to Dr. Rosedale, it can also lead to leptin insensitivity, so the message that leptin is sending out ("stop eating") is not being heard by the overweight dieter. In fact, when we have a liptin insensitivity, we tend to crave even more sugar, even though our bodies are desperately trying to get rid of, (or store as fat), the excess sugar we've just eaten a few minutes ago. And we go on craving sugar, even years after we've given it up - like the cravings that many ex-smokers get when they're around people smoking.
To combat leptin insensitivity, Dr. Rosedale created a diet that is a lot like a cross between the Mediterranean diet and the Okinawa diet. Both those diets have been proven to help people avoid the big killers - cancer and heart disease - and they help people live longer, more productive lives. Dr. Rosedale believes that these diets keep the leptin levels low, and this keeps people on these diets from aging as quickly.
He claims that just a few weeks on his diet (which is really quite easy to follow) will put your leptin levels back where they belong, making it easy to lose weight, and putting an end to the sugar cravings. It sounds like a perfect solution - go on the Rosedale diet when you've made the commitment to give up sugar - your commitment makes it easier to stay on the diet for two weeks, and the diet makes it easier to give up sugar - for good.
The Rosedale diet includes lots of fish, for the Omega 3 fat, and is much higher in fat than most of us are used to. I've never been that excited about fish, but I'm tired of having to fight sugar cravings, even three years after going cold turkey. This is the first diet I've seen that is specifically designed to change our body's reaction to sugar and other refined carbs, reducing the cravings, and helping us keep the weight off without the constant struggle. From now on, I'm going to recommend The Rosedale Diet to my readers.

7 Proven Ways to Resist the Urge to Smoke

7 Proven Ways to Resist the Urge to Smoke
 by: Arina Nikitina

When you decide to stop smoking the most difficult part is to resist the urges. It doesn't matter that each craving lasts only 3-5 minutes. It's still the whole 5 minutes to battle with your willpower! These 7 tips will help you to resist the urge to smoke one urge at a time.
1. Remind Yourself Why You Quit
Every time you experience a craving remind yourself why you quit. It's the excellent idea to take a blank index card and list all the reasons why you decided to quit smoking. List as many as you can, the more the better. If necessary, take the second index card. Carry them with you all the time. Every time you feel the urge to smoke take the index card and slowly read all your reasons why you decided to stop. After you finish reading your urge will pass! (If not, read them one more time or come up with more reasons.)
2. Reward Yourself.
Make it a habit to reward yourself at the end of each nonsmoking week. Think of something you want (it doesn't have to be something expensive, a nice home made meal or hot bath will work). Take the index card and write down what would you give yourself at the end of the week. When the urge comes take a look at the index card with your reward. Isn't it worth coping for 3 minutes? :)
3. Be prepared for your urges!
Get yourself prepared for the urge to smoke in advance. In most cases something triggers the craving (certain feelings, people, or places). You have to know what triggers the urge.
Lets do a really quick exercise. Take a blank piece of paper and divide it into 2 columns. On the one side list your triggers (like "stuck in traffic", "drinking morning coffee", "arguing with colleague"...) and in the second column write down the alternative course of action.
For example, instead of smoking while drinking your morning coffee you could read a newspaper. Instead of smoking after the hot argument with your colleague you can take a walk around a block or write down everything you think about this person, then tier this piece of paper in shreds and throw it away. Don't be lazy, write it down! This exercise really works!
4. Call your friend.
This method works great. Call someone who can support you, who can talk with you for a couple of minutes. You can call your nonsmoking friend, or someone who's trying to quit smoking too.
5. Distract yourself with a quick task.
Think of a small task you have to do, something what would take you 5-10 minutes. Make a call, send a fax, make yourself a cup of coffee, water the plant in your office. Anything! Your task is to distract yourself until the urge will pass. (Hint: Try to find activity that makes smoking impossible!)
6. Drink a Glass of Water.
Take a glass of water and drink it with a straw. First of all having something in your mouth to chew on will help, second it will take you a couple of minutes to drink the whole glass and the urge will pass. Plus, don't forget that you're supposed to drink 8 glasses of water every day!
7. Power Tip.
That's the disgusting one, but it often works. Print a small picture of smoker's lungs (you can find one here: http://www.quitsmokingsupport.com/lungphotos.html ) and put it somewhere in your wallet. I know the view is not pretty, but something like this can stop you dead on your track from lighting up. Take a look! Really! THIS could be your lungs! You love yourself, and you respect your body. Why harm yourself?

Reduce Asthma And Breathe Free

Reduce Asthma And Breathe Free
 by: Dr. Rita Louise

Asthma can be a serous and often frightening condition that is typified by a tightening of the chest, wheezing and difficulty breathing. Asthma is made up of two underlying components: inflammation and constriction. During normal breathing, the bands of muscles that surround the airways are relaxed, and air moves freely. But in people with asthma, the bands of muscle surrounding the airways tighten and air cannot move freely. In addition, individuals with asthma often have airways that are inflamed, irritated and swollen. This can make it hard for them to breathe. This irritation can also cause the mucus membrane that lines these tissues to produce excessive mucus, which can further reduce the flow of air into the lungs.
The airways of people with asthma are extremely sensitive. The airways tend to overreact and narrow due to even the slightest trigger. These can include: emotional upsets and stress, upper respiratory tract infections, breathing cold air and even exercising too hard. Airborne allergens, such as bee pollen, animal dander, dust mold and smoke can also trigger an attack, as can certain foods or medications.
Asthma attacks can be both mild and severe. The severity of an attack, however, can escalate rapidly, so it is important to treat these symptoms immediately once you recognize them. In any case, it is important to work with your primary health care provider when you look to treat this health concern. Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do to help reduce the severity or eliminate asthma from your life.
Recommendations for Wellness
To help control an attack:
Sit leaning forward or in a semi-prone position to help restore normal breathing.
Try placing a hot, moist towel over your chest to help relax your chest muscles and restore normal breathing.
To help reduce your chances of another attack:
Incorporate breathing exercises into your daily routine to help strengthen your respiratory muscles.
Keep a health diary. Use it to help you figure out what is triggering your attacks, then reduce your exposure to them or eliminate those things from your life.
Don't smoke. Avoid perfumes.
Make a special effort to keep your environment allergen free. Get an air purifier. Dust and vacuum often. Change your home furnace or air conditioner filter regular.
Stop exercising if you start wheezing or feel an attack coming on.
Drink plenty of water to help thin any mucus build-up in the lungs.
Eliminate or reduce mucus-forming foods such as milk products, products made with white flower and refined foods.
Lobelia has a long history for relaxing respiratory muscles and reducing spasmodic coughing.
To help reduce asthma symptoms, including ginkgo biloba into your health care program.
Herbal combinations such as Nature's Sunshine's Chinese Lung Support can help to support and protect the lungs.
Herbs such as mullein, licorice root, marshmallow root or slippery elm can be taken to soothe irritated tissues.
Fenugreek and thyme can help to open the chest as it loosens & stimulates the gentle removal of mucus and phlegm.
Incorporate a homeopathic Asthma formula to help with shortness of breath, difficulty in breathing, tightness of the chest and wheezing.

The Undercover Vitamin

The Undercover Vitamin
 by: David Leonhardt

There is a secret vitamin in the neighborhood, wandering around your body under cover. This "vitamin" has just one single purpose, although some researchers believe he has ulterior motives. He goes by the inconspicuous codename of "D" – Vitamin D.
Don't be fooled by his clever disguise. D is no vitamin. He's a steroid hormone, slipping through your body under guise of a vitamin. And he doesn't have dozens of functions, like vitamin C or vitamin E, just one vital mission – to mineralize your bones!
Mineralization is a key objective of every body. Imagine if we all had flabby bones. The world would look like a Salvador Dali nightmare. Vitamin D saves us from having flabby bones.
More importantly, vitamin D saves us from having brittle bones. He prevents us from rickets and osteomalacia by balancing the calcium and phosphorous in our blood. Ooh, that D is a clever one. Not only is he a master of disguises, but he is a master chemist, constantly monitoring, measuring and balancing the mix so it just right to ensure everybody has strong and healthy bones.
Word on the grapevine is that 30% to 40% of hip fractures in elderly people are the result of insufficient vitamin D. So we caught up with D, and managed to slip away with a rare interview transcript:
"D, some of your fans can't get enough of you. What should they do?"
"Get plenty of sun. That is the key. Where the sun touches your skin, that's where I will be."
"But, D, what about people who can't? What about people in the far north, or those who wear head-to-toe clothing or who are stuck indoors?"
"If you find yourself overdressed in a dungeon in Mongolia, get a good multi-vitamin supplement."
"D, that's a wonderful idea."
"Or drink lots of milk, fortified with me, of course. Some breakfast cereals are fortified with me, too. I also hang out in a lot of saltwater fish, like tuna and sardines and herring and salmon. And I love to slip around in the ol' cod liver oil."
"So if we can't get enough sun, milk and fish will do the trick."
"That's right, but be careful about milk products. Not all of them are made with fortified milk. I make no commitment to be there if they are not."
"What about the supplements, D?"
"A good multivitamin supplement should do it for most people. Get a liquid supplement, cause those pills just don't digest. You just end up flushing me down the toilet...ooh, I hate that feeling."
"Yuck."
"And you shouldn't need a specific vitamin D supplement, because it is possible to overdose. And you wouldn't want too much of a guy like me around."
That was all we could slip through the lines. But I think we learned a lot about what it is like to live the life of a secret vitamin. To our hero, vitamin D, we offer our best wishes. May everybody get plenty of vitamin D to keep their bones strong and healthy for many years to come.

Many people think that drastic measures are required in order to have flawless, youthful skin. Nothing could be further from the truth. It's possible to have better looking skin starting with things you already have in your home; no cosmetic surgery or expensive makeup required!
Healthy skin is moist and produces adequate amounts of oil from the sebaceous glands, producing a natural "glow." Plump skin cells fit together like a carefully constructed mosaic, where each one has its own place. When skin cells dry out, however, they begin to lift and separate at an angle, giving skin a dull, flaky look that makes the skin appear older.
The two main causes for dry skin are environmental factors (weather, chemicals, the use of the wrong personal care products) and poor diet. In order to look great on the outside, you must first treat yourself right from within. A regular balanced diet is the number one defense against wrinkles, outbreaks and dry skin conditions. However, certain foods have properties that are most important for that glow that we crave. Here we'll talk a bit about some of these foods, and you'll see how quickly you can achieve radiant skin without breaking the bank.
Most moisture for your skin is provided through your bloodstream. The bloodstream is responsible for pumping nutrients and minerals into your system which are carried through that moisture. Without being properly hydrated, nutrients and minerals in your bloodstream may never reach your skin, making them useless in keeping your skin youthful. The oil that your skin produces is not directly responsible for moisturizing, but instead helps to keep moisture in. An inadequate amount of oil will allow excessive evaporation or the moisture in your skin, allowing it to dry out quickly.
Foods rich in protein are essential for skin regeneration and repair. Not just any protein will do. The Atkins diet, which boasts of it low carb dieting results, allows for many types of protein that can cause damage to your skin. Any kind of processed meat, such as bacon, hot dogs or deli meats are loaded with preservatives and salt that will do nothing but pull moisture from your skin. Better sources of protein would include seafood (salmon in particular is a very good choice), lean fowl (turkey, chicken) and vegetable protein. Veggie protein is often overlooked, as American society is accustomed to "meat with every meal." Try tofu or beans as a high quality protein source. Morningstar Farms makes an excellent veggie burger that even meat lovers would crave if given a try!
Another healthy practice is to eat lots of raw foods every day. Canned and frozen vegetables may provide some nutrients, but only raw veggies and fruits will contain the enzymes necessary to prevent free radical damage. If you absolutely must cook vegetables, steam them lightly and eat al dente.
Certain vitamins and minerals are crucial to youthful skin, including sulfur. In its natural form from foods such as garlic, onions, eggs and asparagus, sulfur with help to keep skin smooth and youthful. You can also take an L-systeine supplement which will also provide adequate amounts of sulfur for healthy skin. A lack of either Vitamin A or B can make your skin chapped or cracked. Beta-carotene is as good for your skin as it is for your eyes. Don't limit yourself to carrots; any type of yellow or orange vegetable is loaded with them. Good examples are squashes and peppers.
Alpha-hydroxy acids are responsible for keeping your skin pH balanced. You can get them from foods such as apples, grapes, blackberries, citrus fruits, tomatoes and milk. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) found in fish (especially salmon), dark leafy vegetables (kale, collards, dandelions) and flax seeds are also extremely important for your skin. Lactic acid helps to improve your skin's moisture content, while glycolic acid removes dead skin cells that make your skin look dry and flaky. Eating foods containing these two EFAs will assist in healthy, glowing skin.
If you're willing to spend a little (just a little), there are a couple of supplements that will powerboost your healthy eating habits. If you find that you can only take one supplement, let it be Vitamin E. It prevents the formation of free radicals and helps repair skin cells damaged from scrapes, burns and bruises. Aloe Vera is another skin healer as well as moisturizer, and can be used topically from the aloe plant, or consumed as a juice found in supermarkets and health food stores. Kelp is an excellent source of nutrients due to its absorption from sea water and is available in several forms.
Junk foods should especially be avoided when trying to maintain healthy skin. Eliminating soda, sugar and other empty-calorie foods will not only improve your skin's appearance, but will help take off the extra pounds. Fried foods are especially bad, because hot-processed oils (such as those found in the supermarket) actually create free radicals and can destroy that look you've been working so hard for. Alcohol and caffeine should also be avoided, as these and other types of diuretics make the body lose fluids and essential minerals, which dries out your skin.
Each of these foods and supplements are easy to find in your local supermarket or health store, and will cost you much less than the myriad of skin care products which promise unrealistic results. In just a few days, you'll notice that your skin will begin to produce adequate amounts of oil naturally, and will no longer show signs of being dull, scaly, flaky or tight. Chapping and cracking during the winter will be much less likely to occur as well. Most importantly, these tips will help you to slow down the effects of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, enlarged pores and sagging skin.
