Well, like a lot of people, winter really does me in. My hair is very static, my sky dry and of course, cold sores. I have a pretty painful cold sore a little bit inside my nose. You can see it when you look in the mirror. I take care of my skin very well, but I can't seem to find a way to get rid of this. How do you get rid of a cold sore ? Any tips and tricks would be perfect. Thank you!
I hate cold sores. I just skipped a week of school because I had one. Abreva works well, but it’s in your nose? So I have no idea. I also read that nail polish remover is absolutely amazing. The acrylic acid or whatever in it dries it out.
If you want to get rid of your cold sore , I would first of all say that you stop touching, Itching, or anything like that try putting on a scarf while you to school? Use chapstick. LOTS of it and its bound to get smaller if all fails, where a nice mask to school OR use some makeup to cover it up.
You cannot use meds on a cold sore in your mouth. It is not a cold sore you are describing, but a chancre sore. It may look like a blister or inflamed red bump. You should raise your mouth with warm salt water to help dry it out three times a day. Also make sure you are brushing your teeth and using mouth wash to avoid infection in case it pops or you bite it. Stay away from acidic foods such as fresh pineapple, tomatoes, orange juice, etc. anything that contains ascorbic acid. Time will heal it, but the salt water will help.
Do not swallow the salt water! Spit it out! Just swish and rinse your mouth with it. She is nuts. Salt water does not taste good to anyone. You don't want to swallow it. It is not good for a person to drink salt water, so why would you swallow it? It will not help you to swallow it. It will only help if you rinse your mouth with it. I don't know what that woman is thinking, and she is an RN!
This may sound real weird but my mom use to always say if you rub your finger behind your ear and then rub it on your cold sore it will go away quick.Something about the oil behind your ear kind of odd but I guess it would be worth a try.

Quit Smoking Tips: Self-help Is The Best Help by Samantha Nicole
If one is asked which of the bad habits one must give up first, the answer will be ‘smoking’. The gravity of the danger that rises from smoking tobacco is little indicated when it is said that smoking is injurious to health. There should not be any second consideration when it will be said that the smokers must quit smoking. Smokers usually state that they cannot quit smoking easily. There are suggestions after suggestions addressed to them so that they can finally free them from this evil bondage.
A section of the people campaign that the smokers should be made aware of the loss they may suffer due to smoking tobacco. The smokers should know that injury caused by smoking tobacco is not limited to infection in the lungs only. They must know it right now that smoking invites cancer. What a great loss of humanity it is! Smoking of tobacco is much more formidable. The collective and cumulative effect of direct and indirect inhaling of the smoke as well as spread of the smoke in the lower surface of the atmosphere has already done great damage to the environment. Hence, the smokers must quit smoking immediately.
Awareness campaign or campaign against smoking can exert expected pressure on the psyche of the smokers, and this campaign should be continuous and forceful. All kinds of printing and electronic media should come forward and volunteer for such campaign instead of leaving the mission entirely to the non governmental organizations.
Some people hold such opinion that the smokers should fix a date to ensure the last date for smoking. Suggestions are also come in the form that the smokers should quit smoking gradually. It is uncertain if these measures produce positive results.
On the other hand, it is always better to improve level of confidence among the smokers who have decided to quit smoking any day. It is their own decision, and everything depends on how determined they are to achieve the target. Men and women, in large number, have freed them from this unhealthy habit in the past. Hence, one can do it if one is firm in the belief that it is possible. The sooner the smokers take decision to quit smoking the better it is for them, because the globe has been preparing to ban smoking of tobacco once for all.

Understanding Bird Allergies----5 Facts About Bird Allergies by Debbie Davis
With so many bird lovers and over 55% of Americans showing a sensitivity to airborne allergens, it's no wonder that allergic reactions to bird dust, dander and feathers happen so frequently. Here is information that will help bird lovers manage their allergies and keep their feathered friends.
It's not the dander it's what's in it.----Many believe that it is the dander, dust, and feathers that trigger allergic symptoms. The fact of the matter is that it is the protein in these particles that is the true allergen. Breathing these fine particles over a prolonged period of time can cause symptoms that range from mild to life threatening in severity.
Dried fecal material is bad news.-----Cleaning the cage daily reduces the amount of dried fecal particles that can be sent airborne due to daily activity by the bird and humans. It contains the same allergen that dander, and bird dust contain, all of which can carry viruses and bacteria airborne. Most of these viruses have potential to affect birds more than humans, but there are diseases such as psittacosis that affect humans as well. Thorough and regularly cleaning seems a small price to maintain the health of both birds and humans.
Symptoms can change.-----There are some people who have been exposed to birds all their lives without problems. Then suddenly without warning they exhibit very definite signs of being allergic when in close contact with the bird. This is not totally unheard of, and should this happen, great care should be taken to avoid more serious health problems.
Wheezing can be a serious problem particularly if asthma is an existing condition. Shortness of breath and/or a constriction of the throat are all serious symptoms and medical attention should be sought immediately.
Normal development equals dander.----As long as you have your bird, there will be dander, dust, feathers, and fecal material. These are all a natural part of your bird's growth and development. So if your condition is so severe that you are unable to be around the bird, unless you undergo allergy shots to reduce your sensitivity to the allergen, you will need to limit your time with the bird.
These things reduce allergens.---One of the best ways to reduce the allergens that birds create is to filter the air. Try using a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting vacuum that filters the air before sending it back into the room. The same type of technology is available in air purifiers.
By definition a cleaner that uses HEPA technology must be able to remove 99.97% of airborne allergens that are.3 microns or greater. This type of filter can easily remove bird dander, dust, dried fecal material and feathers from your air 24 hours a day in a cost effective way.

Asthma Attacks - What are the Causes and What You Need to Be Aware Of by Adam Rise
Asthma can be a deadly disease. That's why we should be aware of and vigilant about what causes asthma attacks so that we can steer away from them. No one accurately knows exactly what causes it; but thanks to the many studies and research, distinct triggers are already identified.
The cause is said to be certain interaction of environmental and genetic factors that researchers do not fully grasp and understand up to now. Studies are ongoing and hopefully we will have more answers one day soon.
It is said that the above mentioned factors greatly influence the severity and intensity of an individual's asthma. The environmental and genetic factors are also said to play a great role in determining how well an individual can respond to the asthma medications prescribed to him or her.
Asthma can be triggered by poor air quality caused by pollution from traffic, factories, aerosols sprays, etc. Tobacco and cigarette smoke are also well-known triggers of it. People who smoke tobacco or cigarettes are more prone to it than those people who don't smoke. However, non-smokers are not really assured that they are free from the risks of this fatal sickness. Inhaling and being exposed to second hand smoke may also cause and irritate it.
Allergens may also be causes of asthma because they are responsible for irritating and inflaming the airways.
Some common allergens include dust mites, pollen, molds, cockroaches and animal dander. What may be an allergen to one person may be a totally non-irritant to another person. That phenomenon just goes to prove that the causes of asthma are truly diverse and can differ from one person to another.
Other substances in the air such as smoke, chalk dust, and powder can trigger asthma especially if an individual is exposed to it frequently. For example, a teacher who has it can eventually will be in danger if he or she is exposed to chalk on a daily basis. If the airways become too irritated eventually they cannot tolerate the chalk dust anymore.
Scented products such as lotions, powders and perfumes can also cause asthma especially if they have very strong odor. Cleaning solutions, gasoline fumes, paint and other substances that can affect or over-stimulate the airways are potential causes for asthma.
Pregnant women have a responsibility to their unborn child regarding their potential health risks. Pregnant women who smoke can cause the unborn child to acquire or develop asthma. Aside from that, the unborn child may already be prone to wheezing and serious respiratory infections.
Usage and intake of antibiotics in early life has been said to be one of the causes of asthma in young children. It has been proposed that antibiotics make individual's vulnerable to it because they modify and affect the gut flora as well as the immune system. This phenomenon is also known as the hygiene hypothesis.
Who would've thought that psychological stress could cause asthma? Well, studies have proven that psychological stress or trauma caused by a child's caregiver can actually cause asthma. It has been said that too much stress can also bring about behaviors that can trigger it such as smoking.
When one or both parents have asthma, it is not unusual for a child to acquire it because this type of sickness can be passed on through the genes.

A Medical Home Vision and Some Lessons Learned from the Front Line by Matt Adamson
If you read our blog with any regularity, it has probably become readily apparent that we at MEDecision are very excited about the prospects and potential of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). We believe very strongly in its ability to enable better patient care at a lower cost and, over the past year, have devoted significant resources to developing technologies that will enable it to succeed. Our vision for the medical home takes into account the following considerations:
1. While some aspects of care management will remain with health plans, their role will change as that responsibility begins to shift toward the medical home team.
2. All patients are unique with individual sets of circumstances. That will require many different approaches toward the delivery of care.
3. With different approaches comes the need for care coordination to steer all of the moving parts and manage tasks according to the patient’s needs.
4. Maintaining different technical systems and organizations for managing silos of case, disease, utilization and behavioral health management will become less prevalent within the health plan. Instead, care management efforts will take a more holistic approach through technologies and teams that are centered on the patient rather than the process.
5. Health plans will expect care management platforms to support the extension of their patient-centered processes to physician practices.
6. Health plans will also look to help create and support Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) around high performing medical homes.
As these factors emerge, it will mean that, in order to be effective, care management platforms can no longer simply be payer-based or exist only within the walls of a single entity. These solutions must be re-imagined and extended so that care coordinators in the medical home and the various other team members involved in a patient’s care (including the patient) can take ownership of tasks within the overall care plan and see the results in a timely manner. This creates a virtual medical home team that can be customized or shifted to account for the diversity of patient needs. The concept of a transparent care plan could then lend transparency to reimbursement models for physicians. Enablement of the medical home is also viewed as a methodology to address issues of the looming primary care physician shortage and increase the level of trust and communication between patients, payers and providers.
To date, MEDecision has been involved in a few PCMH initiatives with its customers, including an important medical home pilot project with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK). While the initiative remains in its earliest stages, we have compiled some critical intelligence points that offer health plans valuable insight when considering similar endeavors:
1. Identify the right provider practice. An effective medical home pilot requires the involvement of a provider practice large enough to generate outcome metrics that are significant and worthwhile. At least one third of the practice’s provider panel should be health plan members, and the practice itself should be a trusted partner with a genuine interest in pursuing the medical home model. It is also beneficial if the practice currently uses an electronic medical record.
2. Develop an effective reimbursement strategy. It’s important for health plans to work with the physician practice to determine the optimal mix of care coordination fees, fee-for-service, and shared savings reimbursement methodologies.
3. Consider technology as a critical component. The technology solution partner selected to help enable the PCMH should:
• Include proven analytics tools to identify gaps in care, delineate populations and support quality reporting.
• Enable the health plan’s nursing staff to drive care management processes closer to the patient through the medical home practice.
• Offer electronic medical records, such as MEDecision’s Patient Clinical Summaries, for use at the point of care.
• Improve provider communication and administrative efficiencies.
• Facilitate a medical home-centric health information exchange.
4. Devise a care management plan. Working collaboratively, medical home participants can determine the answers to a series of important questions in advance that will help smooth progress once the pilot project has been launched, such as:
• How are gaps in care being identified, and who is responsible for closure?
• How will case and disease management programs be managed? Will the health plan support the practice, or will it maintain responsibility—but with better communication?
• How can better collaboration with the pilot site be established to facilitate faster notification of referrals into programs?
5. Create legal and marketing strategies at the beginning of the process. Legal considerations should encompass changes in provider contracting and agreements on the specific responsibilities of and expectations for each participating entity. It is also beneficial to promote the medical home pilot through press releases and other appropriate marketing channels. Participants should come to an agreement beforehand on what the messaging should convey.
We’re very proud of the progress we’ve made in our medical home endeavors at MEDecision so far, and we’re really excited about where the future will take us. What about you? What are your thoughts on our medical home and the things we’ve learned to this point?

Medical Home a Hot Topic at AHIP Institute by Matt Adamson
On Thursday at AHIP Institute I had the pleasure of presenting a medical home case study with my colleague Elaine Olzawski, senior director of health care management at BlueCross BlueShield of Oklahoma. We were incredibly impressed with the turnout (standing room only!!) and the discussion and interaction that ensued. I think it was a clear indication of the way interest in the medical home has just exploded in recent months and a sign that the concept is and will continue to impact the future of healthcare in the United States.
My approach to the session was to provide something of an overview of the medical home model, while Elaine shared some real-life experiences from the pilot program our organizations are working on in Oklahoma. That really resonated with our attendees and prompted some interesting discussion about the differences between commercial versus government-run medical homes and the role that pharmacy plays in the execution of the concept. Elaine and I emphasized the importance of IT as the backbone of a successful medical home and how it can enable the communication, decision support, and outcomes tracking and reporting requirements necessary for success.
Interestingly, it wasn’t just at our presentation that I encountered so much interest in the medical home. There was a distinct buzz about it throughout the conference in general as healthcare organizations gear up to meet the medical home mandates in the recently passed reform law. I got the sense, however, that the concept would be just as popular on its own because of its promise for improving care and controlling costs. Either way, it’s apparent the medical home boom is already beginning and, as we at MEDecision tried to make clear at AHIP, there’s no need for organizations to wait. Those that partner with a well-positioned, forward-thinking technology provider can begin implementing the concept now and be well ahead of the game by the time the reform-driven changes take effect.
I left AHIP with a strong sense that healthcare is definitely on the verge of change and that the medical home, mandated or not, is going to be a key part of it. The coming months may be some of the most transformative healthcare has ever seen. I know I’ll be keeping a close eye on things as they unfold.

Conscious Immunity: Tapping Your Way to a Happier, Healthier YOU by Zach Miller
What comes to mind when you think about your immune system? Do you think about an army of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs ready to go to battle to defend you from organisms and substances that invade your system and cause disease? Do you visualize little Pac-Men like creatures gobbling up all the little buggies?
How about cancer? Did just reading the word flame the fire of fear? Say these words out loud right now: "I have cancer."
How did your body react? Did your heart race? Face flush? Shoulders tense? Stomach tighten?
Though medical science has made some breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, many of us still think "DEATH" when the word is mentioned. An unfortunate fact that supports this thought is that many of us have had someone we love die of cancer. My nephew died of cancer just one month shy of his 14th birthday. It was indeed a tragic and traumatic loss for my family.
Sadly, one thing our health care system does not address adequately is the emotional factors of cancer and other dis-eases. I had one client who was in the doctors examining room, wearing nothing but a paper sheet, when she was given the diagnosis. No family in the room, feeling vulnerable and alone, with no one to physically, emotionally or spiritually support her. While driving home, reeling with thoughts of how she was going to tell her three children, she rear-ended a car at a stop light and severely injured her neck.
It just makes intuitive sense that a body experiencing fear, trauma, stress, and guilt is not in the best shape to heal anything. And though the medical community is well aware that emotional dis-ease set us up for physical dis-ease, traditional medicine does not address the emotional house as a part of the treatment plan.
Mother Teresa once said she wouldn't march on a war against anything. Nothing is cured by war. But we often speak of "fighting cancer". I truly believe a body that is at peace with itself and infuses all its cells with love has a better chance of freeing itself of any dis-ease than a body at war with itself.
Though I am not a doctor, I consider myself a healer. In my experience, it matters not what symptoms or disease the body is presenting. Be it back pain, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, low energy, chronic sinus infections, Parkinson's Disease, depression, and even cancer, the body cannot effectively heal itself until the underlying toxic emotions that are trapped in the body's subtle energy system is released. It's also important to know that these low frequency emotions are mostly driven by limiting beliefs and fears of the subconscious mind.
The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is the most effective and efficient way I have found to free these toxic emotions and reprogram the subconscious.
EFT is a universal healing modality that is easy enough for almost anybody to learn but is powerful enough to assist people with everything from debilitating phobias to serious health conditions. By using a gentle tapping procedure that engages the same energy system as acupuncture, EFT rapidly balances the body and eases the emotions.
Gary Craig, founder of EFT, feels that this indispensable method of dispelling negative emotions should be available to all and has made the method easily available on line at www.emofree.com.
Scientific studies are now emerging that supports what literally millions of people around the world have experienced: EFT, as well as other energy medicine modalities, moves the mind-body to a deeper level of peace, creating a more optimal climate for the functioning of the immune system.
Dawson Church, Ph.D., illuminates this research in his empowering book, The Genie in Your Genes. This book reports the findings of over 300 scientific studies that reveal why energy- and consciousness-based medicine will transform healthcare. Dr. Church deftly explains how genes are being turned on and off by beliefs, emotions and attitudes. I found this study particularly revealing:
в€œв€¦researchers looked at people who were lonely and depressed, and compared the expression of their entire genome with a happier group. They found 209 genes that were differently expressed in the unhappy people. The nature of the affected genes is particularly interesting. They code for, amongst other things, markers of our levels of immunity from disease. So unhappy people had weakened immune systems and were more susceptible to illness.в€
The book also chronicles how a patient altered the degree of clumping of her red blood cells (RBC) by using EFT. The patient's doctor examined the live red blood cells using darkfield microscopy before and after the patient used EFT. Here's what Dr. Church writes:
в€œOur dominant medical model does not believe that physiological processes such as red blood cell clumping are under the control of a patient's conscious mind. [This] usually takes months of treatment, if it can be accomplished at all. Yet in just two rounds of EFT, lasting just a few minutes, were enough to produce an immediate and visible change in the degree of cell clumping.в€ (The pictures showing the change in the RBC was nothing short of miraculous!)
I am not suggesting that EFT should replace medical care. However, the research is illuminating that our psychology plays a definitive role in our physiology, and supports the theory that bodies free of toxic emotions and energy disruptions have enhanced immune function.
In February, 2010, an EFT group is forming expressly for those who have, or have had, a cancer diagnosis. During each meeting a specific aspect of living with cancer will be addressed, including:
В· Releasing the trauma of the diagnosis
В· I feel guilty that I might have caused this cancer
В· Who am I now that I have cancer?
В· I hate chemotherapy!
В· I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tired!
В· I'm ready to release the old toxic emotional junkRead a lot more written content on EFT from Forrest Samnik, LCSW, EFTCert-I at www.tappinginternational.com. Explore more about EFT and the meridan tapping method today!

Important Device For Asthma - Peak Flow Meter For Asthmatics by Adam Rise
People who don't have asthma or a family member or close friend who has it would more or less have no idea what a peak flow meter is.
A peak flow meter is a very important device for asthmatics and without it there would really be a huge gap to be filled in the world of asthma-related gadgets. It is a small, inexpensive hand-held gadget used to monitor the airflow through the bronchi and controls the degree of airway restriction. Peak flow meters usually work through a mechanism called "fast blast", because it basically measures a person's ability to push air out of his or her lungs.
This article features important and basic information about peak flow meters as well as the steps on how to use and operate it.
The main function of the device is to measure an individual's maximum ability to exhale. This ability to exhale is also known as peak expiratory flow rate. When an individual is well and healthy, the device readings are expected to be high. On the other hand, peak flow readings are expected to be low among patients who are unwell due to constricted airways.
Both the doctor and the patient can determine the extent of lung functionality, severity of the symptoms as well as the treatment options for asthma. The height, age, and sex of an individual greatly affects the normal device reading value.
Generally, the device can provide two ranges of measurement to assess the amount of air pushed out of the lungs. Low range peak flow meters are used for very small children while a standard range one is used for teens and adults. It must be remembered that adults have larger airways than children that's why there is really a need to have separate device for adults and children.

What You Need to Know About Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) And Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract by Adam Rise
Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common gastrointestinal disease in the United States. But as common as it is, not a lot of people know so much about the disease and those who are familiar with the disease seem to have little knowledge about it.
This presents a problem to a lot of people. They may already be suffering the symptoms yet they do not know that it could be IBS already. Or for those who already have irritable bowel syndrome, they do not know what precautions to take to avoid irritable bowel syndrome flare-ups.
For you to be able to avoid these kinds of situations, you need to know more about this condition.
IBS is a functional disorder of the GI tract or gastrointestinal tract.
When you say functional disorder, this means that there is a problem with the function of the organ but not the structure of the organ. The physical structure of the organ is perfectly normal but there is just something wrong with the way it is functioning.
The problem sometimes with IBS is that its symptoms are very general and that it is the reason why people have a tendency to take it lightly. The common symptoms of this syndrome can be abdominal pain, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and constipation. But the very basic symptom that can more or less make IBS obvious is the changes in bowel movement patterns.
The best approach to knowing what set off this syndrome flare ups is by knowing what causes irritable bowel syndrome. The only problem with this is that the cause/s of IBS is unclear as of yet. Fortunately, studies about it are continually going on.
Remember, that study a few decades ago consider this disease as a psychological disease rather than a physiologic one. This finding was established due to the fact that there are no abnormalities observed in any of the structure of the organs in the GI tract. This also led to the theory that stress is a strong factor that could trigger irritable bowel syndrome in a person. The mode of treatment during this time is psychotherapy and some even resort to hypnotherapy.
In the early 90s, another research about this syndrome theorized that the immune system of the human body also plays a big role in the development of IBS. And recently, there are researches on this disease that try to establish that this syndrome is caused by infectious agents.
IBS flare-ups can be caused by something that you do or it could be set off with the condition you are in. These are some risk factors that could be the reasons that set off irritable bowel syndrome flare-ups.
It has, throughout the years, been believed that emotions are a strong trigger to set off IBS flare-ups. Some even believe that these emotions are also the cause of irritable bowel syndrome itself.
The wall of the intestines is lined with nerve cells that are connected to the brain. Strong emotions or stress can cause the muscle of the intestines to spasm. This can lead to either constipation or diarrhea that are two of the symptoms of it.
Another risk factor that may set off IBS flare ups is the kind of food that you eat. It has been believed that there are certain foods that can cause IBS or worsen the condition. Fructose, artificial sweeteners, fatty food, alcohol, chocolate, sodas, and dairy products are just some of the types of food considered to cause or aggravate irritable bowel syndrome.

GI Diet - All About Glycemic Index Diet by Adam Rise
A GI diet is one way to refer to a diet where the glycemic index is observed This type of index is a chart that numbers all of the different foods in the index with a number. Each one of the foods has a number that can give you a good idea of the type of food that you are eating and how it rates in the index. Foods that are higher than 65 in the glycemic index are considered to be high in the index. Foods that are low are better for you and should be consumed over the high indexed foods.
It can be very confusing to try to go on a GI diet without having a list of the glycemic index. Many foods that you think are good for you and may be low in sugars are actually high in sugars and tend to raise the blood glucose levels. When you have a chart to go by, you have a better chance of being able to ascertain the right foods to eat.
If you have been told to go on a GI diet, chances are that you may have borderline diabetes and high blood sugars. This is a serious condition but it can be reversed if you watch what you are eating. You must take a look at a good glycemic index and memorize the types of foods that are high in this chart and avoid them. You should also memorize the foods that are low in the GI and eat them. This type of diet consists of foods that are low in the glycemic index.
It is not just carbohydrates that figure into the GI diet. You need to eat a well balanced diet if you are going to be successful at losing weight. Proteins and whole grains are also important. You should not be under the impression that you must avoid all carbohydrates, either. While some carbohydrates are high, this is not the case with all of them. And the vitamins and minerals that are absorbed into the system are something that should not be avoided by anyone. The important thing is to figure out which are the best carbs that are low in the index and will be beneficial to the GI diet.
Keep away from simple carbohydrates as they offer no nutritional value to your body but raise the blood glucose level and also turn to fat quickly. You can find foods and recipes for a GI diet by going online and learning more about these foods and what you should be eating to watch your blood glucose levels.

Diet Plans And Menus - The Paleolithic Diet by Levi Reiss
The Paleolithic Diet is based on the nutritional habits of Homo Sapiens about 130 thousand years ago. In those days people lived from hunting, fishing, and gathering, and also agriculture and herding in the case of sedentary people. This two-phase diet is low in sugar, but rich in protein and fiber. The first phase is dedicated to weight loss; the second phase is dedicated to weight stabilization. Here are some of the diet principles.
Eat only authorized foods. In Phase 1 these elements include animal-based foods such as poultry, fish, seafood, and eggs; a long list vegetables and a few fruits; and some other foods including soy, dried fruit, and bran. In Phase 2 all fruits are permitted, as well as rice cakes, and rice, which must be mixed with vegetables. Don't eat more than 50 grams (under 2 ounces) of carrots and beets weekly. Eat a lot of protein, as did the cavemen and cavewomen. The best protein sources are red meat without the fat, fish, poultry without the skin, eggs, tofu, and tempeh. You may consume meal-replacement drinks. Avoid sauces and mustard. Put an accent on fish, a fine source of omega-3, said to fight against cardio-vascular illnesses and aging. Other good sources of omega-3 include fish oil, and colza, walnut, and soy oil. Sharply reduce your sugar consummation. Consume less than 30 grams of glucides daily in Phase 1 and then between 30 and 55 grams daily in Phase 2. Eat 25 grams of nutritional fiber daily. Eat calcium; it's found in dairy products, dried fruit, and sardines. Drink a minimum of 1.5 liters (about 6 glasses) of water daily outside of mealtime. In Phase 2 drink a maximum of 2 glasses of green tea, fruit juice, or wine daily. Limit your consumption of fats; don't cook in oil.
The Paleolithic Diet claims to lower the frequency of diabetes and cardiovascular illnesses such as arteriosclerosis. A disadvantage is the number of excluded foods. Many people find this diet monotonous.
Here are two sample menus:
Menu 1 (Phase 1)
Breakfast: A glass of water on rising. A soft-boiled egg. Unsweetened coffee or tea.
The mid-morning snack is green tea and half a protein bar.
Lunch: 120 grams of skinless chicken. As much steamed cauliflower and broccoli as you like.
Supper: Leek and mushroom soup. Grilled sardines. Radish and cucumber salad. A green apple. Strawberries.
Menu 2 (Phase 2)
Breakfast: A bowl of sugarless soy milk. Wheat bran. Almonds. Coffee or tea.
The mid-morning snack is green tea and half a protein bar.
Lunch: 150 grams of skinless turkey. As much cucumber and radish salad as you like.
Supper: A slice of mackerel. Onion soup.
Some information in this article comes from a fascinating new book, La Bible des Regimes, written by Jenny de Jonquieres and published by Amerik Media. Her book describes more than 80 diets and weight reduction programs. Each diet is presented with 5 menu plans, a detailed discussion of its advantages and disadvantages, and a whole lot more. La Bible des Regimes is presently available only in French.

Water Damage in Hospitals by Leo Nov
Most hospitals would think that their facilities are maintained well until a small leak turns into a torrential flow of water, causing significant damage. Unfortunately, sudden water intrusion in a hospital could lead to several unique dangers and consequences.
Physically, water can damage the structures of the hospital and may even require reconstruction. There is also a risk of damage to expensive medical equipment, hospital furniture, and paper documents. There is also the possibility of system failure related to technology, electrical power or communication systems.
When any system of the hospital is affected, there will certainly be a disruption to services and operations, affecting both patients and healthcare practitioners. As a result of water damage, patients may not be able to get the service or medical attention they need when they're supposed to or the quality of which would be greatly affected.
In terms of health and safety issues, the risks of contamination are obviously high in hospitals because of the presence of contaminated substances inside the building such as medical wastes that although properly disposed of can still mix with water that has leaked into the building. In addition, hospitals require the highest level of sanitation so contaminated water leaks will pose a serious health threat.
Preparedness and Prevention
In most cases, the hospital administration can't predict when a water emergency will happen or what impact it may leave behind. However, hospital administration and facilities management can take steps to make sure the hospital can recover quickly should the unexpected happens.
Being well prepared is the key to successful crisis management. Preparedness begins with education. By understanding and analyzing water damage sources and hazards and identifying the ones present in their respective institutions, hospital administrations can develop the appropriate preparedness program.
There are so many things that need to be considered when preparing for a water emergency. For one thing, the hospital should have a contingency plan that covers extensive power outage and failure of technology and normal communication channels due to water damage.
Usually, the best solutions during emergencies are the simplest ones such as the use of handheld radios to keep communication lines open or the use of simple checklists to guide staff about emergency procedures. Certainly, preparedness and prevention plans will require some investments both in terms of money and time. While some investments may be costly, they will prove to be invaluable in the long run.
Still, planning and huge investments will largely be ineffective if the hospital staff is not aware of emergency procedures. Create a list of phone numbers they should call to report a water incident. Provide the staff a map of where water shut-off valves are located. As a preventive measure, educate staff about possible sources of water damage so they can help detect problems early.
Recovering from Water Damage
The speed with which the hospital gains full recovery is directly related to how soon the water damage was reported and addressed. This is why it is important that the hospital's facilities management is notified immediately of any water intrusion in the building so timely response is provided.
The ideal response time to water damage is up to 48 hours from exposure. If saturated materials are cleaned and dried within this grace period, then mold growth will be prevented. Since time is a critical element in any type of water damage, the immediate availability of professional restoration services will be of great help.
If the hospital has prepared ahead with a pre-incident job order, the partner contractor should be called in right away to initiate restoration. Otherwise, look for a reliable water damage restoration specialist offering emergency services. With immediate response, not only will mold damage be prevented but most wet items can be salvaged, too. Although, porous materials that became wet would have to be thrown out.
With the services of an experienced and competent contractor, wet structures will be dried thoroughly using professional methods. Areas that were exposed to contaminated water would also be cleaned and sanitized before being dried. A representative from the hospital's infection control unit should monitor the entire restoration work. After the job, the contractor should present proper documentation of the affected area's successful restoration.

Dangers of Depressants and Tranquilizers For Teenagers by Adam Rise
Teenagers who use depressants abusively are in danger of being addicted to it not only physically but also psychologically. Inappropriate use of depressants may cause slurred speech, confusion, detached from reality, lack of coordination and slowed breathing. If not monitored properly, depressants can cause serious health problems and complications.
Tranquilizers, another kind of depressant, help people become calm and eventually make them fall asleep. The most common tranquilizers today are benzodiazepines, which include the diazepam and alprazolam.
Tranquilizers such as benzodiazepine provide a calming effect by facilitating transmission at synapses that make use of the GABA neurotransmitter. Similarly, alcohol facilitates transmission at the same synapses but through a different mechanism. If depressants and alcohol are taken together in excessive doses, it can be fatal because they increase the GABA transmission that in turn have a suppressing effect on the areas of the brain which are responsible for controlling heartbeat and breathing.
Another dangerous benzodiazepine drug is flunitrazepam. This is popularly known as the "date rape drug" because guys can easily drug their date by just dropping a tablet of flunitrazepam in their date's beverage. It dissolves quickly in water and has absolutely no color, distinct odor and taste. Flunitrazepam makes people feel drowsy, lose control over their muscles and makes people barely recall the events that happened when they were under the influence of the drug.
A lot of teenagers resort to using depressants and alcohol to take their mind off things because they feel that they have no other place to go to, no other person to talk to. Students who are under the abuse of alcohol and depressants may be observed to be drowsy and sleepy in class, unresponsive to class participation and lacking a sense of balance.
Teachers or parents should be sensitive enough to detect if a teenager is under the influence of depressants. Early detection is helpful because it would mean that early intervention may also take place. Parents and teachers should not shrug off sudden changes in the mood and attitude of a teenager. The deterioration of academic performance may also be taken as a warning.
Although it is not suggested that parents and teachers quickly jump to conclusions, it is always much better to be on the safe side and make sure that teenagers are not heading down the wrong path.

The Skinny On Tummy Tucks by Nick Messe
Abdominoplasty, otherwise known as the tummy tuck, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to rid you of the excess fat and skin around your midsection. As well it helps tighten the middle and lower abdominal muscles with the ultimate goal of giving you a firmer leaner waistline.
During an abdominoplasty, an incision is made across the abdomen, just above the pubic area. The doctor makes a second incision to free the belly button from the belly button stalk. The skin is then pulled up along the rib cage, separating it from the abdominal wall. Excess fat is removed from the abdominal area. Next the surgeon tightens the underlying tissue and muscle by suturing it together, revealing a tighter, more toned waistline.
The surgeon then pulls the skin back down, removing any excess, and makes a new incision for the belly button. Sometimes at this point the surgeon performs liposuction to sculpt the abdomen. A compete abdominoplasty takes about two to five hours. A partial, or mini-tummy tuck, is a less invasive procedure that focuses just on removing excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal area and takes about one to two hours to perform.
Ideal candidates for this procedure include individuals who retain extra fat and skin around their midsections even when they adhere to a diet and exercise program, especially people who have loose skin after weight loss or multiple pregnancies.
If you decide to consult a cosmetic surgeon about abdominoplasty, expect the doctor to begin by taking a detailed family and personal medical history that he will use to evaluate whether you are a suitable candidate for cosmetic surgery. He will then examine your abdominal area to measure fat deposits, their distribution, and your general skin tone.
The plastic surgeon will also explain the surgical process to you, including informing you of any anesthetic that will be used, and discuss risks associated with the surgery. The surgeon will then explain the recovery process to you and estimate how long it's likely to take, and give you an honest assessment of what results you should ultimately expect from your surgery.
If you decide to proceed with the plastic surgery, your doctor will give you detailed instructions before surgery, including a warning to refrain from smoking during the two week period prior to the procedure and the two weeks after surgery, as smoking inhibits wound healing.
Swelling and pain are common and to be expected afterward. Your physician can give you medications to ease the pain, and you can expect to have your sutures taken out approximately a week after surgery. Recovery times depends upon the individual, but many people are able to return to work after only one to two weeks, even though they may not fully recover for several months. Scars will take a little longer to fade.

Questions To Ask Your Eye Surgeon by Kathryn Dawson
When you have opted to have eye surgery, pre-surgery nerves are likely to set in. Although the procedure is extremely quick and very safe, it is normal to have jitters before you go in. To ensure that these nerves are kept to a minimum you need to feel confident about the surgeon performing the operation and be sure that the treatment is being performed by the best. In order to give you this peace of mind there are a few questions you can ask your surgeon or eye doctor in the run up to the surgery. These questions are outlined below.
Question 1 - What are your qualifications?
This is one of the most important questions to ask if you want to ensure the person doing your operation is competent. Ideally, the website of the hospital you are choosing will have displayed the qualifications of each and every doctor and surgeon on their staff. That way you can quickly and easily access the information. If the information is not there or you want to know more you can ask the doctors and surgeons directly.
Question 2 - How long have you been performing surgery?
This is a good question to ask because it gives you an idea of their level of experience. If they are very new to the field then you may prefer to ask for someone more experienced to carry out your surgery, although so long as the surgeon has the required qualifications you will no doubt be in the very safest of hands.
Questions 3 - How many similar procedures have you performed?
This is another great way to gauge experience. The higher the number the better in this instance. If you feel that you would rather have someone more experienced then you can always ask to be treated by someone else. When it comes to having surgery of any kind you want to be sure that you are being treated by someone with a high skill and knowledge level.
Question 4 - Who will be dealing with the pre-surgical procedures and after care?
Sometimes different physicians will handle the pre and post surgery care to the doctor or surgeon performing the surgery. Often patients prefer to deal with just one doctor however throughout the entire procedure. When choosing an eye hospital you can make this a prerequisite if this sounds like you.
No doubt there will be other questions you want to ask before deciding upon eye surgery. Asking questions is a good idea, even if you think they are "stupid questions" because you want to feel confident and happy to proceed. If you are unsure of anything before you go in you are likely to be nervous and slightly unsure. It is not just the surgeon that you need to have confidence in but the whole hospital itself. When looking for a place to have eye treatment done, make sure you choose a facility that you feel happy with. Ask to see the treatment room if you can and make sure they have a professional looking website. It can also be a good idea to read some testimonials, even speak to previous patients if this is at all possible. If you know anyone who has had surgery in the past you should speak to them to find out about their experience and seek recommendations of hospitals and surgeons.
Whatever treatment you are having done, you should feel confident when you go into surgery. Eye surgery is extremely safe and is very effective at dealing with a number of problems. Glaucoma surgery and surgery for dealing with eye cataracts are particularly safe and effective. Make sure you are happy with your eye hospital and eye surgeon before proceeding with treatment by asking the questions above alongside any others you may have.

How to Prepare for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scan by Kathryn Dawson
A magnetic resonance imaging scan or MRI as it is more commonly known is quite a simple procedure that can be carried out on an outpatient basis. It is used to show the interior of the body in order to provide a diagnosis. Doctor's commonly prescribe it to patients who have been involved in a trauma, but equally it is used to locate the presence of tumors and other abnormalities. It can also detect broken bones, although more often an x-ray will be used for this which is a much cheaper scan. Having an MRI scan is not painful at all and doesn't take a long time. There are a few ways you may be asked to prepare which this article is going to cover. If you want to find out how you should prepare for an MRI scan then read on.
Guidelines about what to do immediately preceding the scan may depend on where you are having it done and why, but usually there are specific instructions about eating and drinking. Your doctor will tell you whether or not you can eat beforehand or how much water you can drink. Sometimes you won't be able to have any food or drink for a good few hours beforehand, other times this won't necessarily be a problem. Unless you are told otherwise you should just follow your usual routine of eating and drinking but avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours.
Often people ask about the clothes they should wear during the exam. Usually the patient is given a gown to wear so this is not a problem, but it is a good idea to wear loose fitting clothing on the day in question. Your doctor will advise on what you should be or will be wearing during the scan itself. You should not wear any metal however including belts, earrings and other jewellry.
Sometimes patients are required to take contrast material before the scan takes place to help the radiologist and other doctors interpret the data and images supplied. This will depend on the individual case. Sometimes the contrast material will be administered via an injection or orally via a pill. You will be asked whether you have any allergies before being given any contrast material including food and drink allergies and whether or not you have asthma. The material used is called gadolinium and it is rare that someone suffers from an allergic reaction to this substance. Some illnesses such as kidney disease may prevent someone from having the contrast material. If this has been in the family then your doctor may perform a blood test to check your own kidney function before giving you the contrast material.
Pregnant women may not be suitable for an MRI scan. Although there have never been any cases of side effects on babies from this type of scan, your doctor will not prescribe this scan to somebody pregnant unless absolutely necessary. As well as removing all jewellry before the exam, patients should also leave behind hearing aids, credit cards, watches, hair pins and anything with a zip. An MRI scan uses magnetic fields and anything that could potentially interfere should not be taken or worn into the room. Some people who suffer from a fear of enclosed spaces can ask for a mild sedative before undertaking the scan. Your doctor may or may not agree to this depending on the case. If you are worried about this aspect of the scan you should talk to your doctor beforehand.
Magnetic resonance imaging is an important part of modern medicine. This type of medical image processing is an effective tool in diagnosing serious illness and disease. It is particularly useful in the field of clinical oncology as tumours and abnormal cells in the body can be detected. The more effective a diagnosis is, the better treatment can be given.

Kegelmaster-Bring A New Hope To Your Life by Andrew Rivano
The wonder machine called Kegelmaster provides resistance to the pelvic floor region which, after the use for a few weeks, becomes strong enough to control the abnormal functioning of bladder. Some gynecological problems in women make their bladder sensitive which loses the ability to control the urge of frequent urination and the pelvic muscles become loose and week with urine leakage becoming a common syndrome in women suffering with this type of ailment. The loosening and weakening of vaginal muscles can occur to any woman before or after pregnancy and after menopause. In these circumstances, the pelvic floor loses its elasticity and becomes loose and week resulting in loss of sexual urge and dissatisfaction.
Kegelmaster is a simple electronic device which works on the theory of progressive resistance which, if used with good effect, makes the vaginal muscles strong and resistant to urine leakage which can occur while sneezing or coughing. This device is different from the normal electronic simulative devices which claim to be very effective.
Kegelmaster is a cost effective device providing the same result, if not better, than those electronic devices. The progressive resistance technique is commonly used by the bodybuilders who build muscles on their arms and thigh by lifting heavy objects which provide the required resistance and help in building and strengthening of their muscles. Kegelmaster also uses the same technique when inserted in the vagina before performing the kegel exercise. This was not in practices traditionally.
The new concept used by Kegelmaster is an innovative one and does not have any side effect. It tones the pelvic floor and makes them tighter and stronger than ever. The tensioned setting in Kegelmaster pushes the vaginal muscles to work harder. Strong tension setting puts extra pressure on the muscles and the muscles have to work even harder, it helps them in getting stronger and tighter after use of say 10 to 12 weeks.
If the kegelmaster is used as per the recommendation, it works wonder and produce great results which improves the sexual life of women with a new urge to live longer and happily with good health.
