Chemotherapy Drugs: Little known side effect YOU need to know about!

Chemotherapy Drugs: Little known side effect YOU need to know about!
 by: James Arond-Thomas, MD

In January, 2005 it was reported that cancer has surpassed heart disease – for the first time – as the top killer of Americans younger than 85. In 2002, the most recent year for which information is available, 476,009 Americans younger than 85 died of cancer, compared with 450,637 who died of heart disease. An estimated 1,372,910 new cancer cases and 570,260 cancer deaths are expected this year.
Paclitaxel, a preferred treatment for lung and breast cancers, has a cancer-promoting risk as well….
Lung cancer remains the biggest cancer killer, projected to claim 163,510 lives this year. Paclitaxel will be used in the attempt to save the lives of many of these patients. However, one little-known effect of Paclitaxel is that in a subset of these patients there will be up to a fivefold increase in the production of Interleukin – 8 (IL-8) – a cellular communication molecule that initiates the growth of new blood vessels to feed the growing cancer. In other words, if you fall into this subset of patients, treatment using Paclitaxel alone may not be effective at preventing recurrence.
NF-kB blockade enhances cancer killing ability of Paclitaxel!
IL-8 is under the control of an inflammatory regulating protein called nuclear factor-kappa Beta (NF-kB). When the activation of NF-kB is blocked, IL-8 dries up, much like a faucet that has been turned off. Thus, blocking NF-kB activation enhances the cancer killing ability of Paclitaxel. These results were seen with many types of cancer cells, including lung and esophageal cancer cells.
Paclitaxel is NOT the Only Drug that Promotes Excessive NF-kB
Paclitaxel is but one of a group of drugs that has this unwanted side-effect of activating NF-kB. Other drugs in this group include Doxorubicin, 5-Fluorouracil, Cisplatin, VP-16 (Etoposide), ARA-C, and Methotrexate. In addition, research demonstrates that excessive NF-kB activity contributes to cancer development in the following types of cancers: non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic, primary liver, head and neck cancer, prostate, breast, esophageal, stomach, colon, Hodgkin's disease, and multiple myeloma.
Supportive treatment that improves chemotherapy effectiveness…..
Paclitaxel, along with the other NF-kB activating chemotherapeutic drugs, is approved for the treatment of a wide range of cancers. It appears likely that they will continue to be used for the foreseeable future. If you are on (or considering using) Paclitaxel or one of the other drugs in this group to treat cancer, there is a supportive treatment that you need to know about that improves the effectiveness of these drugs and reduces your risk of having a cancer recurrence.
We have a Multi-Dimensional Approach to Reducing Inflammation that Complements and Enhances the Impact of these Drugs!
At the Center for Learning about Healing in Ann Arbor, MI where I practice integrative medicine and behavioral oncology, I focus on multi-dimensional ways to empower patients to evaluate and change patterns of eating, behaving, thinking, and coping that are known to contribute to inflammatory reactions in the body. These methods complement the cancer killing effects of Paclitaxel, Doxorubicin, 5-FU, and other such drugs.
Genomic Testing Can Clarify Your Specific Inflammatory Molecular Mechanisms that Sustain Your Cancer
Inflammation is present before, and during the life of a cancer. In cancer, inflammation is a pathological process characterized by injury or destruction of tissues caused by a variety of cellular and chemical reactions. It is usually manifested by typical signs of pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function. However, inflammation is also essential for tissue repair and tissue rebuilding. Genomic testing (easily performed with saliva or blood samples) allows us to create a personalized map of your inflammatory tendencies based on your genomic predispositions. This method is revolutionary because it allows you to regulate your genomic capabilities to your advantage, which then allows you to reduce the expression of your inflammation-related genes.
What Cancer Patients Need to DO is
Reduce the Expression of Inflammation-Related Genes
Once you know your specific genomic blueprint for excessive inflammation, we work together to develop the tools you need to re-set the expression of your inflammation blueprint. These tools must be unique to you, precisely because your genomic expression capabilities are unique to you. These tools include anti-inflammatory diets supported by oral and intravenous nutrients that block and down-regulate NF-kB. Remember, it is this protein that is responsible for the abnormal rise in IL-8 during Paclitaxel administration. By measuring markers of cellular inflammation before, during, and after chemotherapy treatment, and using your unique tools, we compile a personalized treatment record of inflammatory responses (normal and abnormal) that serves as a benchmark for your risk of cancer recurrence after chemotherapy treatment.
With these personalized guidelines, you will have insider knowledge about choices of foods, behaviors, and interpersonal relationships that will be conducive to keeping your inflammation-related genes quiet. Patients with high inflammatory markers during chemotherapy are at higher risk for recurrence, and thus need to more closely monitor and modulate their NF-kB expression after the chemotherapy ends.
What is important to understand is that: There is an optimal amount of expression of NF-kB consistent with health; Excessive expression contributes to diseases like cancer recurrence, especially when NF-kB is turned on continuously; and You will have the power and the tools needed to regulate NF-kB's expression.
Become the Captain of Your Healing Team!
As your physician-coach, I recommend that you become the captain of your healing team, and let me and my team partner with you to clarify the specific molecular mechanisms driving your specific cancer. We coach you to learn the skills and to master the tools needed to reduce the collective contribution of foods, emotions, and behaviors to the excessive expression of inflammation-related genes. By working together, you learn to modulate your inflammation blueprint by modulating the expressive capacity of NF-kB. Modulating your expression of NF-kB is the inner game of self-discovery, consciousness expansion, forgiveness, and cell (self) renewal that is what allows healing to occur. Vitamins for the Recovering Alcoholic

Vitamins for the Recovering Alcoholic
 by: David Westbrook

I have frequently heard alcoholics who are in early recovery remark that, "If this is what recovery is like, I'd rather go back to drinking." Vitamin deficiencies, particularly of the B vitamins and vitamin C, may be responsible for much of the lethargy, skin irritation, memory loss and depression experienced by people who are newly recovering from an addiction to alcohol. Though these symptoms may have been ongoing while the alcoholic was actively drinking they may seem less tolerable while not under the influence of alcohol.
Alcoholics often replace food consumption with alcohol. Unfortunately, the calories gained from alcohol are what are frequently referred to as "empty calories." That is, they are calories lacking nutrients and of little value to the body. Additionally, alcohol gets in the way of the body absorbing and using the vitamins and minerals of the food that the alcoholic does eat. The combined effect is to leave the alcoholic nutrient poor.
Individuals in recovery can benefit from a healthy diet and a vitamin regimen.* Vitamin B in general, and particularly vitamins B1 (thiamin), B3 (niacin) and B5 (Pantothenic Acid) play a role in turning sugars into energy. Pork is one of the best sources of B1, other sources include cereals and nuts. B2 can also be found in pork and fortified cereals, as well as, salmon and swordfish. Whole grains, milk, eggs, and liver are perhaps the best food sources for Pantothenic Acid.
Meanwhile, B6 and B12 play important roles in producing blood cells and the health of the nervous system. Both of these important vitamins are frequently depleted by years of heavy drinking. Good sources for both of these are meat. Additionally, B6 is found in bananas, avocados, and peanuts. B12 is only found in animal by products; however, this list includes dairy and eggs.
Vitamin C, plays an important role in keeping the skin healthy, and plays an equally important role in the health of bones, teeth and blood vessels. Deficiencies in vitamin C can also be responsible for irritability, weakness and muscle fatigue. The best and most consumed source of vitamin C in the United States is orange juice from frozen concentrate. Other sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, broccoli, potatoes and cantaloupe.
For the average American, eating a healthy diet, vitamin B and C supplements are often unnecessary. However, early in their recovery, alcoholics should seek the advice of a doctor about a proper regime of vitamins and diet. Paying attention to health matters can increase the chances of successful recovery from alcohol addiction.
*For a good comparison chart of vitamins see the patient article section on the University of Maryland Medical Center website.

How to Neutralize the Terrorists Within Your Body

How to Neutralize the Terrorists Within Your Body
 by: Ray Gebauer

Did you know that there are free radical biochemical "terrorists" systematically attacking your cells and the DNA of your cells everyday, on an average of 10,000 hits per day?
These internal weapons of mass destruction are abnormal (free radical) oxygen molecules that are destroying your health and accelerating the aging process. 73% of all diseases are caused by these free radical biochemical "terrorists" molecules.
A Free Radical Oxidant molecule is a molecule of oxygen that is MISSING an electron. Because it is so out of balance, it is very dangerous and extremely destructive. So it STEALS electrons from other molecules in your cells, destroying cells and your precious DNA in the process. Often the DNA is mutated, leading to cancer and other deadly diseases.
How often does this happen? Scientists estimate that EACH cell in your body takes over 10,000 HITS per day from these oxidant free radicals "terrorists"!
You can observe this oxidative process outside your body in several ways. Remember the last time you saw a fire? Didn't it destroy the material it burned? Fire is a rapid oxidative process. One antioxidant for a literal fire is water—it stops the oxidation process, if you have enough.
We have a wild fire burning us up on the inside on a cellular basis, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get enough antioxidants from our food to control this wild fire.
Rust is a slower oxidative process. We are "rusting" on the inside because of these free radical oxidants. The ONLY way to slow down the process is with Antioxidants.
Have you ever observed what happens to an apple after you cut it? It starts to turn an ugly brown. That is oxidation in process. Without the protection of the apple skin, it begins immediately. Without the protection of antioxidants in our body, we are "turning an ugly brown" inside (accelerated aging and disease development).
So where do these terrorist Free Radicals Oxidants come from?
They come primarily from the oxygen we breathe. Our bodies use this precious oxygen, and in the process continuously generates oxygen by-products called Free Radical (FR) Oxidants. 98% of these FR Oxidants are exhaled, but the 2% that remain must be deactivated or neutralized by ANTI-Oxidants that we are supposed to get from fresh fruit and vegetables.
In addition to self generated FR Oxidants from normal body functions, we generate even more FR Oxidants from stress. Plus we take in even more FR Oxidants from other unavoidable sources of toxins and chemicals from the environment including our air.
Since it is IMPOSSIBLE to get enough antioxidants from our food, we MUST get extra antioxidants from supplements if we want to be healthy and slow down the aging process.
A new generation of Anti-Oxidants has been developed that contains a clinically tested, synergistic blend of nutrients that is literally TEN TIMES superior to the average anti-oxidant product on the market and THREE TIMES more potent than the closest competitor per unit per gram of antioxidant activity!
Virtually every known antioxidant product was tested for actual anti-oxidant activity—in fact 90 of them (70 were from retail and 20 from MLM companies). The TOP antioxidant product tested at 5674 units (in thousands) per gram using the ORAC-O test for water and fat soluble antioxidant activity.
Vitamin C is a common antioxidant. Ester C was ranked #11 at 3363 units of antioxidant activity. Three other Vitamin C products ranked at #4, #8 and #9 at 5337, 4017 and 3389 units of antioxidant activity. Green Tea was ranked #18 at 2206 units of antioxidant activity.
In sharp contrast, this special blend, also containing glyconutrients, tested at 17,254 units of antioxidant activity, ranking it as the number one tested (ORAC-O) product in the world.
So just why are antioxidants so important?
Antioxidants are what your body uses to maintain health and slow down the aging process. The five cultures in the world that have the greatest longevity (well over a hundred years of age) all consume large amounts of foods high in antioxidants! National Geographic quotes a 123 years old man: "Oh to be 15 years younger again!" 15 years younger would make him 108!
The researchers who formulated this antioxidant blend selected food extracts from these five cultures to create the most potent and unique antioxidant product on planet earth!
How well does it actually work?
The US government recently released results of a study that found that eating five daily servings of the five foods highest in antioxidant activity raised antioxidants in the blood level by 13%.
In a dramatic contrast, just TWO capsules a day of this wonderful antioxidant product raised antioxidant levels in the blood by 37%!
Of course no product can directly cure, mitigate of prevent any disease. But what antioxidants do is to support your body's natural ability to defend, protect and repair against stress and premature aging. So why not empower YOUR body to defend, protect and repair? When you consider what is at stake, your health and longevity, why wouldn't you do what whatever it takes to maintain the best possible health and maximum longevity?
If you care about your health and longevity, GET THIS NEW PRODUCT NOW for as little as 3.5 cents a day! A family of four can benefit from this important product for less than $1 a day per person. Isn't preserving your good health worth a dollar a day?
So why not empower your body to defend, protect and repair? When you consider what is at stake, your health and longevity, why wouldn't you do what whatever it takes to maintain the best possible health and longevity? It's your life!

Selecting the Best Wheelchair Cushion

Selecting the Best Wheelchair Cushion
 by: Maricon Williams

Although your wheelchair and cushion are separate purchases, which chair you choose is significantly affected by the type of cushion you will use. Chair and cushion are a team, each influencing the other. The proper combination of chair and cushion will enable you to sit in a neutral and stable posture and to operate the chair safely.
Cushions come in various depths and sizes which need to be accommodated by the size of your wheelchair frame. The actual length of footrests, the height of the chair back, the position of armrests, and other features are influenced by how high or low you will be sitting on a cushion. Clearly, you need to decide which cushion is best for you before you can make a final decision about which chair is best, certainly before you specify the exact dimensions of your chair.
Wheelchair cushion development is quite lively, as designers and engineers continue the quest for the ideal cushion. A number of manufacturers, such as Jay and Roho, exist solely for the design and production of seating and support systems for wheelchairs. Most of the major wheelchair makers, including Everest & Jennings, Invacare/Pindot, and Otto Bock Reha also offer an assortment of cushions.
Cushion design is by no means a simple topic, and there are many choices to make as you decide on the right one for you. This chapter discusses the four basic types of cushions--foam, gel, air floatation, and urethane honeycomb--as well as designs and systems for more specialized needs.
Cushion function
What kind of cushion you choose will depend on a variety of factors, including how much time you spend in your chair, how much you move around in your chair, and how stable your posture is.
One important task of the wheelchair cushion is the prevention of pressure sores. Since, when we sit, only one third of the body's surface is supporting all of its weight, blood flow is restricted. In the presence of muscle atrophy--which is experienced in particular by many people with spinal cord injuries--circulation is limited further by the loss of muscle which once served as a sort of natural cushion. An additional risk of sitting is shear force, as we tend to slide forward in the cushion, causing stress across the surface of the skin. Resulting pressure sores (decubitus ulcers) can be very serious, leading to hospitalization, surgery, and--though rare--even death. The right cushion is a primary tool for maintaining the health of your skin.
The other crucial task for a cushion is postural stability. Even if you are able to walk or are an amputee with sufficient built-in cushioning, the right cushion helps to support your spine. If you already have some asymmetry in your body, you need to be supported in a way that will not increase any spinal deformity. For manual chair users, greater stability in your chair also means you can push the wheels with more confidence and strength.
It can't be repeated often enough--posture is key. Bob Hall of New Hall's Wheels puts it well:
The wrong seating system leads to poor posture, which leads to physical problems, which leads to becoming more sedentary, which leads to a negative emotional and personal experience. It's a dangerous chain of events.
Foam cushions
Foam technology has come a long way. No longer just the soft, airy stuff of the past, foam now comes in a range of densities and with varying degrees of "memory," holding its shape as you sit, contributing to your stability. The new foams can adapt to any shape, and still provide even support, spreading pressure across the sitting surface. Different foams are often used in combination, layered for their various properties of softness, even support, and memory.
Foam is relatively inexpensive, and it is easy to cut. A therapist can experiment with shapes free of financial risk. If you have an area of skin that is broken down or on the verge, pressure can easily be reduced by cutting out a portion of the cushion. (You should not do this on your own, though, because only a doctor or therapist can identify the changes in your cushion that will help relieve pressure while still maintaining appropriate support.)
On the downside, foam wears out faster than other materials and loses its shape, but because of its lower price, this might not concern you. If you choose a foam cushion, be sure to replace it when its time is up. Old foam that is compressed can allow pressure points to form that can lead to a sore.
If you choose a gel or air flotation cushion for daily use, it is a good idea to have a backup foam cushion since gel and air flotation cushions can leak.
Gel cushions
Gel cushion designs attempt, in effect, to replace the consistency and support of atrophied muscle tissue. Highly engineered gel fluids are placed in pouches and usually attached to a foam base, so that the cushion conforms to the pressures placed on it. As a result, gel cushions provide excellent pressure distribution and are very comfortable. Many gel products also offer supplemental inserts to stabilize your legs. Your knees might tend to fall together (adduction) or apart (abduction), so such an accessory can help keep your legs straight which also aids your overall posture.
Unfortunately, gel cushions are much heavier than other types, which can cancel out some of the benefits of your lightweight wheelchair. Gel suppliers such as Jay and Flofit offer lighter, active-use designs, but these might not be appropriate for you if you are unable to do your own pressure-relief lifts.
If you bounce up and down curbs, or commonly experience similar impact in your chair, a gel cushion might not be ideal. When you sit in a gel cushion, there is no further "cushiness" to absorb impact, a concept known as impact loading. Other cushion types are better able to absorb impact.
Another drawback to gel cushions is the possibility of them "bottoming-out" as the gel is pushed aside by your weight. You can help prevent this distribution problem by kneading your gel cushion once a day, keeping the fluids loose and spread evenly. Look for a design that divides the gel portion into several sections so that all of the gel cannot push to the sides.
There is also the chance of the gel leaking. While cushions arrive with patching kits, patches are ineffective when the breach is at a seam, which is often the case. A leak might be very minor, or it could be an extremely messy affair.
Air or dry floatation cushions
Air floatation cushions support the body entirely on air. A typical example is the Roho cushion, designed with a group of small, interconnected rubber balloons arranged in rows. Pressure is balanced by air shifting out to surrounding balloons, spreading pressure evenly against your skin. The whole system is closed so air floatation cushions can't bottom out the way gel cushions can.
If you have a pressure sore, you can tie off individual balloons to reduce contact under that area, allowing you to spend more time sitting as the sore heals. The Roho Quadtro allows the user to inflate four quadrants separately for optimal positioning. Air cushions are relatively lightweight, and are waterproof, allowing for double duty in the bathtub or on a boat.
Crown Therapeutics, maker of the Roho cushions, also offers air floatation products for the wheelchair back, supplemental lumbar or sacral support, full bed cushions, and even a product for a standard toilet seat. All are inflatable to adjust to your needs.
A longtime presence in disability magazines has been an ad for the "Bye-Bye Decubiti" cushion. It is inflatable, comes in many different sizes and shapes, is made of heavy duty rubber, and--although different from the Roho balloon design--is uniquely formed to minimize pressure at the bony protrusions on which we sit.
Air cushions can be less stable for those who move around a lot in their chair, but recent designs offer either low profile or quadrant options that minimize this problem. The balloons used in air cushions can be punctured, of course, and leaks do occur, although a fairly heavy duty rubber is used. But patching them is easier than with the gel design. The hard part is submerging the cushion under water to find the leak (look for escaping air bubbles).
The biggest drawback to air cushions is that they require more maintenance. It is necessary to check the pressure frequently, especially if you have pressure sores.
Urethane honeycomb cushions
Thermoplastic urethane honeycomb cushions are the most recent development in the world of cushions. Because there are many individual cells--like a beehive--these cushions are able to distribute weight evenly, but there is no risk of leaking gel or of an air bladder being punctured. The many open spaces in the beehive structure of the cushion allow air to travel more effectively. This design helps to protect against skin breakdown because your skin is kept cooler and moisture is prevented from collecting.
Urethane honeycomb cushions are very light, absorb shock, and a low profile cushion can provide significant support. These cushions can even be thrown into your washing machine and dryer, making them attractive for people with incontinence problems where the cushion will be soiled from time to time despite best efforts at bowel and bladder management.
Supracor of San Jose, California, makes several honeycomb cushions based on their patent. One type uses multiple layers of varying stiffness to allow your sit bones to sink into the cushion while deeper layers provide overall support and weight distribution. Another type is contoured to provide adduction and abduction, plus a rear dish for pelvic positioning. There is not much of a track record for urethane honeycomb cushions because of their recent development, but there appears to be good prospects for this type of cushion to evolve and become more widely used.
Alternating pressure
The latest territory being explored in cushion design is the use of an air pump to create alternating pressure, of particular interest to those with more severe disabilities who are unable to perform their own weight shifts to relieve pressure.
Sitting for extensive periods of time without pressure relief causes the muscle and fatty tissues to separate, putting the delicate skin layer in closer contact with the bone. This creates even more pressure on the skin. Lack of air circulation increases the temperature between you and the cushion. Moisture collects and is trapped against the skin. All of this further increases the risk of a sore.
One alternating pressure solution is the ErgoDynamic Seating System from ErgoAir in New Hampshire. This system pumps air into and out of alternating portions of the cushion. The product is contoured for pelvic stability, with a pre-ischial cross-bar design that prevents forward slipping--and therefore shear--on the cushion. Special vent holes serve to allow the flow of air and moisture. In a five-minute cycle, compartments are inflated and deflated to shift support alternately between the ischial (sit) bones and the hips. Both areas get regular periods of complete pressure relief. The manufacturer likens it to a massage while you sit, with the resulting promotion of blood flow. In some cases, the makers suggest, a pressure sore can even heal while you sit. This cushion system can be plugged into some power chair batteries or charged in a cigarette lighter in your car.
Alternating pressure products are of course heavier--given their use of batteries and air pumps--and, like air floatation cushions, prone to puncture. However, the technology for these innovative systems is likely to evolve further in the future, as new materials and batteries are developed.
Positioning systems
Advanced needs such as significant spinal curvatures or asymmetries in your body require more complex kinds of trunk support. For example, the Pindot system, recently acquired by Invacare and available from suppliers around the country, is a support system which customizes seat and back cushions to your exact shape. First, a special chair takes an imprint of your body's shape. A therapist views a computer image of the shape and can customize the contours of your cushion. From your imprint and the therapist's specifications, a foam cushion that gives you optimal support is manufactured specifically for you. The Pindot system is of most value to people who will not move around much in their chair. Since the cushion is formed to your shape, you will only be comfortable in it when you sit in the right relationship to the customized contours.
Your needs might require the services of a rehab engineer who custom designs your seating system. A rehab engineer might adapt existing products or build something from scratch just for you. Your therapist or dealer should be aware of such people in your area. Often they are working in a major hospital or university. The Veteran's Administration is also involved in research and engineering that addresses the need for customized positioning systems.

Wheelchair Maintenance Tips

Wheelchair Maintenance Tips
 by: Maricon Williams

For easier handling of wheelchair maintenance, repair and emergencies, keep a card with your chair at all times that includes the following information:
Your name, address and phone number (in case of an accident).
Your doctor's name and phone number (in case of an accident).
The names and phone numbers of relatives or friends to be contacted in case of an accident.
The make and model number of your wheelchair.
The manufacturer's toll-free number.
The name and phone number of your local repair facility.
The phone number of a mobile repair firm, if there is one in your area.
The phone number of a local wheelchair transport service (in case you're stranded while out of the house).
Your insurance policy number and related information.
Your insurance company's phone number for any necessary authorization.
If you're going to be alone in your wheelchair or scooter anywhere you can get stranded, let people know ahead of time where you're going and when you expect to be back. In such cases, it's also wise to have a cellular telephone along in case you need to call for assistance.
Tape a piece of paper in plain sight somewhere on your wheelchair to remind you when it's time to stop by your wheelchair maintenance facility for a six-month checkup on your chair or scooter. Another way to help remember your twice-a-year maintenance schedule is to peg the two visits to a couple of special events that are roughly six months apart -- perhaps your birthday and some holiday such as the Fourth of July or Thanksgiving.

Sport Wheelchairs

Sport Wheelchairs
 by: Maricon Williams

Today, almost every sport is offered to the wheelchair user - wheelchair skiing, downhill wheelchair racing, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball and more. Participating in sports will not only help strengthen your body and improve dexterity, it will also boost your self-esteem.
Manufacturers offer custom-built sports wheel chairs to suit both the athlete and the sport. This means that sports chairs are not usually covered by insurance and tend to be expensive, ranging from $2,000 to $8,000.
Most new users can only afford one wheelchair for everyday use. If you are interested in playing sports for fun, you may find a rigid lightweight chair a practical choice. Many athletes are already using them in competitions because of their quick maneuverability.
Many people are also using sport wheelchairs for everyday use. Because they are made of aluminum, sportschairs are easy to propel and get in and out of cars. This crossover has caught the attention of wheelchair manufacturers, who have begun testing their chairs to see if they can be utilized by the everyday user.
If you become heavily involved in a sport, you may find it's time for a custom chair. At that time, you will already know which features to look for. If not, attend a wheelchair sporting event to see what the other athletes are using.
Instead of spending a wad of cash for a new sportschair, you may want to purchase a used one. However, the only disadvantage is that secondhand wheelchairs are customized to fit their first owner, and may not suit your needs.

Who Says You Won.t Enjoy the Beach When You.re on a Wheelchair?

Who Says You Won't Enjoy the Beach When You're on a Wheelchair?
 by: Maricon Williams

Summer is fast approaching, as early as now, we plan superb escapades and cool adventures. Once again, a vacation is tempting us to go untamed. The warm breeze is inviting us to have an escape on the beach and have a refreshing plunge away from the stressful world. For a moment the world can turn into a paradise of fun and excitement.
Every person yearns for a fun-filled breath of air on the beach or by the river. However, a number of people are restricted to do so for the reason that they are confined in their usual wheelchairs. But not anymore, a newly launched product will wipe their worries away. The unprecedented launch of beach wheelchairs has changed thousand of lives out there. With this breakthrough, everybody can now share the delight of having fun on the beach.
A beach wheelchair is a highly functional, long-lasting and affordable wheelchair that can uplift the spirit of your loved ones. You can find and order beach wheelchairs in Florida, California, Minnesota and Washington. You can also fax or e-mail the manufacturers to order one.
Beach wheelchairs are tested to offer comfort and durability. The manufacturers used it first in order to guarantee its quality. You can use the wheelchair to recline in an upright position, to elevate your leg with the legrest, to make a slight tilt-in-space action, to fully tilt in position and a lot more.
Stainless steel tubing was used to preclude rusting. Its width and height were also made accessible to doorways and passages. Its interchangeable pool wheels have fewer on tire air pressure so that the person using it can enjoy the seashore with lesser force application. To eliminate salt water corrosion, the wheel hubs are made from poly-nylon material. The rear suspension casters and articulates were tilted to allow the four wheels to maintain its contact with the ground when going across uneven terrain, making it more steady than standard outdoor wheelchairs. The comfortable sling seating system material was also made with U.V. inhibitor. In order to free the hands, armrests are made detachable for lateral transfers.
The bliss of returning to nature and not feeling restricted can come alive with the help of beach wheelchairs. You can have an umbrella attached to it to beat the summer heat. With beach wheelchairs everybody is going to enjoy the dip and the vacation. Thanks to this innovation – we're all going to have fun!

Choosing Wheelchairs for Kids

Choosing Wheelchairs for Kids
 by: Maricon Williams

Take a Team Approach Before Buying
No parent should try to choose a chair for their child all by themselves," says Chris Seiberlich. "It's not that they aren't qualified to make decisions, but there are too many to be made by any one person. You have to think about a huge spectrum of issues.
Seiberlich is a physical therapist at Children's Clinics for Rehabilitative Services in Tucson , Ariz. She and her partner, Kimberly Becerril, an occupational therapist, are discussing how to choose and properly fit a wheelchair.
"For instance," Becerril says, "one of the most fundamental issues in choosing a chair is transportation. How will the chair be moved from home to school? If the answer is in the back of a station wagon, then a power chair is out. Even with a van, a power chair is going to need a ramp, because it's too heavy to lift in. A lot of our kids would benefit from a power chair, but unless the transportation issue can be solved, it won't be the right choice."
Becerril knows a number of children who have power chairs who leave them at school, and use a manual chair at home.
"During the process of choosing a chair, we do a lot of transfer analysis," Seiberlich says. "We want to know who's going to be doing them (transfers), and we want the parents to demonstrate how they're doing them. We can suggest ways to make it easier, such as use of a transfer board, or a Hoyer lift in appropriate situations.
"Most parents who've never seen a board are surprised by what a difference they can make," she adds. "Still, if they are lifting the child and the chair several times a day, they are at a big risk for developing back problems. We had one mother with bruises all over her legs from constantly lifting the chair. Choosing a lighter chair, and one with some removable hardware, can make a big difference."
Seiberlich and Becerril note that they can't make all the decisions regarding the choice of a chair, either.
"We want the involvement of those people who see the child on a regular basis," Becerril says.
"That means the parents, of course, because they know the child best. But we also want the school involved, especially the teacher or therapist who sees the child daily functioning outside the home. The issues at school can be quite different from those at home."
Becerril says that they also want the chair supplier involved, to tell them what's available. "We'll describe the need, and the supplier can describe what they have to meet it. We can make mistakes if we do it ourselves, but if we have the whole team, we can cover all the bases."
Lifestyle and Environment
What's the right style of chair? While this will depend on individual needs and preferences, Becerril offers some important guidelines.
"Lots of kids want the sports frame look: It's got a low profile and looks great. However, these frames are rigid: they can't be folded, and they can't grow with the child. So we wouldn't recommend one of these at least until they are finished growing. Even then, the transportation issue remains a problem."
Seiberlich adds, "We also would never recommend a chair without removable armrests or footrests. One of our clients who got a chair with rigid footrests went from independent transfers to requiring two people to move him. Luckily, we were able to recycle the chair to someone for whom it made more sense."
When it's time to choose individual components, Seiberlich and Becerril want to hear about lifestyle, terrain and environment.
"We can choose the wheels based on how rough the ground is around the home," Seiberlich says. "Here in the desert, we recommend airless inserts. One good cactus spine and you've got a flat! Back East, we've got to consider the mud, the snow and the rain."
"We also want to know about the inside of the home: Will an otherwise ideal chair have trouble getting through narrow doorways? If so, and there's no money to redo the home, we've got to change our thinking," Becerril says.
Social and educational factors come into play here as well. "Is the chair appropriate for the school setting?" Seiberlich says. "For instance, does the height of the chair put the child above or below classmates? Can we make small changes to get it looking more streamlined, if that's what the child wants? If we can think of these things up front, it can save a lot of time and expense later on."
Growing With the Child
Both the X-shaped cross brace (black) and the front frame sections (blue) can be replaced as a child grows.
And expense is a huge issue: A manual wheelchair with custom seating can cost $5,000, while a power chair might be four times that. A really good cushion alone might be $300 or $400. Becerril notes that most of this is covered by insurance for many families. "And if you buy the right kind of chair, one that can grow with the child, that investment can last 10 or 12 years. This is the child's mobility, and his independence. It's important to get it right."
What does it mean for a chair to grow with the child? The idea may be new to those who think of the clunky "one-size-fits-all" sling back chairs as the only type there is. Most chairs today can be widened by changing the cross brace supports underneath, and lengthened by replacing the front frame sections that hold the leg supports.
"With this system, we can take a child from a very young age through the teen-age years with the same chair. We can grow a chair from a seat that measures 10 inches by 10 inches to one that is 18 by 18. While there is some expense along the way, it's still cheaper than replacing the chair. And the frames are warranted for life," Becerril says. "Make sure you choose a color you're not going to be sick of in a few years!"
Seating and Support
One of the most critical decisions regarding chair options, and one for which professional input is most crucial, is the choice of a seating cushion.
"The basis for good seating posture starts in the pelvis," Seiberlich says. "We're looking to distribute the weight over as big an area as possible, for support, for comfort and to prevent skin breakdown."
She notes that pressure sores, or decubitis, are a critical concern with prolonged seating. For those who aren't in the wheelchair for many hours at a time, a flat seat may be appropriate. For more prolonged use, or when stability in the chair becomes an issue, a high-quality foam cushion becomes preferable. Other alternatives include air-filled or gel-filled cushions.
"Children with scoliosis (curvature of the spine), whether or not it has been stabilized with spinal fusion, may have some left-right tilt in the pelvis," Seiberlich says. "In such cases, we can use the seating system to minimize the effects of the tilt. Some of the kids are still flexible, so by raising the lower side, we may be able to level out the pelvis. On the other hand, if the tilt is fixed, we'll support the higher side, so it takes up some of the weight. Distributing that weight is the key."
Scoliosis also figures into the choice of the back. "We can't always use a standard flat back or sling back. We may need a molded back to match up to the spinal curvature. Again, we're trying to get more surface contact to lessen pressure," Seiberlich says.
Lateral supports may be an important element as well. "If the child does not have the trunk strength to maintain their upright posture, we need to do it with laterals. Even with spinal fusion, they may need them to help prevent tipping."
Becerril notes that a "tilt-in-space" chair may be appropriate for someone with very little trunk strength. This type of chair maintains the sitting posture, but tilts back to relieve some of the anti-gravity work for a while, combating fatigue. Recliner chairs, which allow a prone position, are used more often for those unable to tolerate the normal angles of seated posture.
Final Fitting
Once the chair has been ordered, Becerril says, expect a couple months delay before it arrives. "Authorization takes time, and typically we're dealing with several different companies, and it's a custom product. Nothing related to wheelchairs ever happens quickly."
Once the chair arrives, the hands-on fitting process may take two to three hours, Becerril explains. "Things come up you can't foresee. Also, we want to show parents the signs of an improper fit. It's not something you do once and it's done: Kids grow fast, and their condition can change fast, so you need to monitor the fit constantly."
Seiberlich adds, "We always want parents to be checking for redness, because this indicates too much pressure. They need to check the buttocks, the back, the feet, and the back of the legs. Anywhere the chair is making contact, there's the potential for too much pressure."
She offers an important rule of thumb: "There should be no more than three fingers worth of space between the front of the seat and the back of the legs. With any more than this, the seat is not providing enough thigh support, and the chair may dig into the legs. It also makes sitting more difficult, as you don't get the same amount of surface holding you up. Also, you need to make sure that the footrests are low enough to get full contact for the whole thigh." There should be at least half an inch between the hips and the side of the chair. The laterals shouldn't be too tight, and shouldn't dig into the armpits.
"Parents can make these adjustments, if they know what to look for," Seiberlich says. "But we like to see the child in his chair at least once a year, especially if he's still growing. And anytime they think there's a problem they can't fix, we want them to come in."
Maintenance
In addition to monitoring the fit of the chair, Seiberlich stresses the importance of regular maintenance. "The chair should be washed regularly, using a spray cleaner. Most cushions are washable, or have washable covers. A thorough inspection of the whole chair once a week is a good idea: Check the brakes, look for loose hardware, and check the tires and seat."
Becerril points out that change in temperature can change the inflation pressure of tires and air-filled or gel-filled seats. Simple problems can easily be fixed at home. More involved ones can be taken care of by the vendor, who will almost always do maintenance for free.
Finally, Seiberlich returns to the transportation issue to stress an important safety rule.
"Chairs are generally not crash-tested, and the pelvic strap that keeps you in the seat is not as strong as a seat belt. We recommend that a child be on the car seat, strapped in using the car's seat and shoulder belts." If needed for lateral support, a chest harness can be used as well.

Life is meant to be Simple - So let.s make it so.

Life is meant to be Simple - So let's make it so.
 by: Dr. Jamie Fettig

Follow your inner knowing.
That is all you have to do.
The problem is your beliefs dictate your actions and right now you have faulty belief systems. If you believe it is 80 degrees outside it will dictate your actions of what you wear. If you believe the road turns, your actions are going to be driven by your beliefs and you will turn. Your beliefs dictate your actions.
You need to understand myth from reality otherwise following your inner knowing may not be effective. Your beliefs will be dictating your actions and confining and limiting what you do with the messages from your inner knowing. There is a way around this without having to realize all of the things that you believe are true that are really just myths.
Be flexible in your behavior. Don't let your beliefs of what can and cannot work, or what you should and shouldn't do, get in the way of what your inner knowing is telling you to do. Be open to your inner knowing telling you to do things that are not within your comfort zone or telling you to do what makes sense to you.
Here are a couple questions that will help you easily follow and trust your inner knowing. How many times have you listened to your mind over your inner knowing, looked back and regretted it? How many times have you listened to your inner knowing or gut feeling over your mind, looked back and were glad you did it. Even though it may have made no sense what so ever at the time.
Now the real question. Have you ever done this even once? Weighed the pros and cons and made up your mind about what you were going to do, and then received a knowing to do something different. You listened to that inner knowing and followed it. But then you looked back and wished you had not. You wished you had listened to your mind, to your original thought process. Have you ever done this? Have you ever, even once in your life, listened to your inner knowing, your gut, over your mind, and regretted it? I bet you never have.
Now, this is really interesting. You have often listened to your mind over your inner knowing, and regretted it. You have listened to your inner knowing and were thankful that you did. And you have NEVER listened to your inner wisdom over your mind and regretted it. EVER. What do you want to do more of?
Follow your inner knowing. It will never lead you astray. You will always be happy and it will always turn out when you follow your inner knowing. So follow your inner knowing.

Physical Activity and Less?

Physical Activity and Less?
 by: Dr. Jamie Fettig

Everyone claims this or that is the best form of exercise for you. But how do you really know?
What is the best form of physical activity? The one you will actually do. You see, everyone is different. How can there be any one form of physical activity that is best for everyone? And the good news is that it can be something different every day. You can walk one day, run another, go swimming another, play frisbee golf another, go golfing the next, rollerblade the next day, ride your bike another day, etc. You do not have to do the same thing every day. But you can if you want to.
How often and for how long is it best to do activity? Again, everyone is different so listen to your inner knowing and do what it says. Some hints on understanding what your inner knowing is telling you about physical activity: One day 30 minutes might be perfect for you, and the next day only 10 minutes is good. Other days an hour or two might be ideal. One day a slow relaxing pace might be ideal, the next a heavy vigorous workout might be called for. You might work out 5 days a week and 2 the next week. There are no rules about how and when you should or shouldn't do physical activity. My only guideline would be: Do what you want to do, and listen to your inner knowing when doing it. The lawyers would want me to tell you here to consult a physician before starting any exercise program. My thought is that your inner knowing knows better than any doctor does about what is best for you. If you listen to your inner knowing and act on what it says, who cares about the doctor.
Walking outside is a great option. You can take deep full breaths of fresh air when you are walking and go within and focus on the presence within you. You will also get sunlight from being outside. Bottom line, just do some form of sustained physical activity.
One overlooked form of Activity that is so essential to your well being is mental activity. And I am not talking about worry. When I talk about mental activity, I am talking about creativity, using the mind creatively. It does not have to be "art," either. Creativity comes in many shapes and forms.
You can be a lawyer and be solving cases, figuring out creative ways to win the case. You can be an architect and use your mind to create projects. You can read books and use your mind to create pictures and connections and the "movie in your head." You can do problem solving activities, like crossword puzzles or some card and board games, anything where you are creating new thoughts, new patterns of thinking, and different ways of looking at things. This is mental activity.
Art is also a really good way to do mental activity. The process of creating abstract things also encourages new ways of thinking and patterns of thought. These new ways of thinking and being are stimulating your brain and nerves to grow and regenerate. Like the muscles in the body, if you don't use them, you lose them. So creatively using the mind helps us to grow and flourish from within.
What is the best form of mental activity? Whatever it is you will actually do. And it can be different every day. Just as with physical activity, whatever you do is perfect. It can be the same thing every day, or you can do something different every day. It is really up to you and your inner knowing.
The key is doing mental activity, creating new things with your mind, thoughts, and ways of thinking, whether it is art or how to win a legal case.
Physical and Mental activity will help you flourish, be healthy and free.

Calming The Inner Voice

Calming The Inner Voice
 by: Chris Green

Stress. Depression. Anxiety. They're powerful words that conjure up all kinds of images and prejudices in our minds. People who suffer from these illnesses find it hard to cope with life. They can feel deeply unhappy, they can find no joy in anything life has to offer, and of course, their levels of self-esteem, confidence and self-respect plummet.
But how can this happen to someone?
Let's concentrate on how these illnesses affect the way we value the self. Of all of the destructive patterns of behavior these illnesses cause, the way a sufferer talks to the self is the fuel that maintains their illness.
I have experienced depression from two sides. For 5 years, a series of traumatic events triggered a personal nightmare I believed would never end. One of these events came when my lover was diagnosed with depression. At this time, I too had entered into the spiral of anxiety-induced depression. Both of these experiences have given me an insight into how sufferers destroy any value of the self.
Let me give a couple of examples. With my partner, if I'd arranged an evening out with friends, she'd say:
"No, I won't come, you go without me. I never have anything interesting to say. I just bore people. They'll find me an effort to be with. I'll stay here."
If I made a mistake, I'd say to myself:
"I'm useless. I'm no good at anything. Everything I do I get wrong."
This self-deprecation then spreads into other areas of life. You begin to criticize the way you look, the decisions you make or don't make, and you focus solely on the downside of life. Each time a little bit of self-worth, a little bit of self-respect and a little bit of self-confidence are eroded. Eventually, they are lost completely. When I reached my lowest point, having lost everything and everyone I loved, I'd say to myself:
"If I died tomorrow, no one would know and no one would care."
So, what helped me to come out of the fog?
Well, the reason I thought I'd become depressed was because of a series of traumatic events occurring at the same time. I was wrong. The root cause of my depression lay in the ways I reacted to them. One of the ways I'd reacted was to blame myself for events I couldn't control. The more I blamed myself, the more I beat myself up. The more I beat myself up, the more my self-esteem decreased.
The phrases I have used to briefly illustrate self-deprecating phrases we continually use against the self are mild. I'm sure you realize that many people use much stronger phrases than I've given here. The point is that these phrases would be totally unacceptable to say to others. You wouldn't tell a person that they were boring, an effort to be with and that everyone found their company dull and it would be better for everyone else if they kept away from people.
Agreed?
Yet, if I say to people:
"Pay yourself compliments. Accentuate your good in all areas of your life. Write down your good points, your triumphs, your achievements. Remind yourself as often as possible about all the good you have done."
They look at me like I'm an alien and say they'd feel stupid. Or uncomfortable. Or even embarrassed.
Yet they don't feel any of these emotions when they talk to themselves using emotionally charged, self-deprecating phrases! And like rust upon metal, these phrases gradually erode our self-esteem and our confidence.
OK, here's the bottom-line. I'd like you to inscribe what you are about to read into your mind over and over again until it is permanently etched there:
It is NEVER acceptable to talk to myself in a way I know is inappropriate and even offensive if I spoke in the same way to others.
Time for me to sign off, but before I do, here's a phrase I say to myself every single day without fail. Please use it, it is very powerful:
"If you put yourself down, down is where you will stay."

Enemas for Pleasure Pain or Vitality?

Enemas for Pleasure Pain or Vitality?
 by: Gerard Bulger

It's one of the 'in things', Movie Stars, Sportsmen even Politicians are talking about having an Enema, but what is it, is it healthy, is it pleasurable?
One point I must make, this is not a 'how to' guide, before undertaking any such procedure I would advise you consult your local medical adviser first.
Basically it is the cleansing of the colon and large intestine, it involves the injection of a solution into the rectum to soften the feces, distend the colon and rectum, and thereby cause the easy emptying of the bowel.
Although its all the fashion at the moment, its actually one of the oldest medical procedures and has been practiced by most cultures throughout history. In fact its only within the last fifty years that the regular practice of Enema's has decreased, this mainly by the onslaught of chemical enema's and laxatives from the pharmaceutical industry. Everyone from the Greek's and Egyptians to the Kings of France have extolled the virtues and health benefits of Enema's. The use of enema's today can be broadly split into two areas, one for medical and health reasons, the other for pleasure and erotic practices.
Let's deal with the traditional health benefits first, and have a quick look at your colon. Its main function together with your lungs, skin and kidneys is the elimination of toxins in the intestines, blood and lymph systems. Among its most important functions are the colon are the absorption of water and minerals, and the formation and elimination of feces, so if your colon is blocked it cuts down or stops these functions. A recent survey in the United States showed after surgery where the colon was examined, there was on average over a pound of undigested or impacted meat in the colon. Meat that was unable to move and consequently it rotted and released poisons into the blood stream. Not a good idea so by use of diet or other procedures keeping the colon clean helps maintain a healthy body.
The solution that is usually used in enemas is warm water, but surprisingly there are many solutions that can be used, these solutions are often called 'recipes'. They include Coffee, Beer, Epsom Salts, Limon Juice, Ivory Soap. Each recipe can have a slightly different effect and result on your body, so it is always best to do much research before using a new or untried recipe.
The following is just a short paragraph in the use of enemas from a sexual point as this article can be read by minors, if you wish for more information there is plenty available on specialist Internet sites.
Certainly the biggest growth interest in enema's has been for sexual pleasure itself and the use before sexual acts. Willing partners are far more adventurous in performing Anal sexual acts than in previous years and the application of an enema before can aid not only in eliminating health hazards but heightening the pleasure of the act.
There is wide spread agreement by both the traditional and alternative therapy professions that the cleansing of the colon and intestines by enemas can be both beneficial and invigorating, but it is best to be well advised and researched before trying any procedures yourself.

The Big FAT Lie

The Big FAT Lie
 by: Ray Gebauer

Over two thirds of Americans are over weight, and half of them are considered obese. Most of the remaining third of Americans are concerned about becoming overweight! While we are obsessed with avoiding food that is high in fat, America has the dubious distinction of its population having the highest percentage of overweight people of any nation in the world! England is number two!
One of the most common and harmful misunderstandings is the misinformation (lie) that we are fat because we eat too much fat. Though eating excess fat can contribute, the primary culprit for excess body fat and many degenerative diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes is NOT eating foods high in fat, but eating too much carbohydrates and sugar, and especially in combination with fat, such as French Fries and corn or potato chips. People on a high carbohydrate and low fat diet tend to be more unhealthy, carry more excess body fat and don't live as long.
Putting the Brakes to Your Metabolism!
What creates excess body fat, more than anything else, is a high RATIO of the carbohydrates to protein and fat, and especially certain types of carbohydrates that have a high conversion rate to fat. When the percentage of a meal (not just for the day) is higher in sugar or carbohydrates (a long chain of sugar molecules), much more of that food will be converted to fat instead of being burned as energy (calories). The effect of this is putting the brakes on your metabolism, which results in lower energy and greater storage of fat. Obviously, this is NOT what you want!
Plus this sets up a vicious cycle of over eating. Once the carbohydrates are converted to fat, you get a blood sugar drop, which makes you hungry for more carbohydrates. So you eat more to raise your blood sugar, and the whole vicious cycle repeats! Soon, you've gained weight, and feel even more like a failure.
According to the Glycemic Research Institute, many of the "fat-free" foods are much more fattening than they were before the fat was removed, because sugar has been added (and often disguised) to compensate for the low fat!
This is because carbohydrates and sugar, and especially certain carbohydrates, stimulate insulin production. Insulin directs your body to convert the food to fat and store it as fat instead of just burning it as energy. To measure this fat conversion and storage effect, foods are rated by what is called the glycemic index. The higher the index, the higher percentage of that food and the other foods eaten with it, will be converted to fat, regardless of the fat content of the food.
So for an example, eating high glycemic foods like baked potato, rice cakes, corn flakes or cooked oatmeal which are low in fat, is more fattening than eating a juicy beef steak or a bowl of ice cream!
High Fat Conversion Foods
These are some common foods with their glycemic index numbers, that are especially high on this index, and thus stimulate fat storage:
Common sugar (sucrose)—92
Macaroni and cheese—92
Potatoes (mashed—100; French fries—107; baked—121; potato chips—high)
Corn—78; pop corn—79; corn chips—105; corn flakes—119
Pizza—86
White rice—83; brown rice—79
White and wheat bread—101
Cold cereals (most). E.g. Life—94; Grapenuts—96; Cheerios—106; Total—109
Cooked cereals (e.g. Cream of Wheat—100, oatmeal—87 (steel cut is less)
Bananas—77
Most juices and all drink mixes and soft drinks (97)
Desserts (ice cream—87); donuts—108
Fat-free bottled "lite" dressings (due to added corn syrup and maltodextrins).
High fructose corn syrup—89
Maltodextrins—150 (added to many foods, but deceptively not counted as sugar!)
Did you notice that some of these foods are worse than pure sugar? It is wise to eat these foods sparingly. And when you do eat these foods, balance the glycemic index for the whole meal by eating low index foods with them.
Fat Burning Foods
Here are some of the foods that are rated as having a low glycemic index:
Fructose—32
Trutina Dulcem (a fruit sugar fifteen times sweeter than regular sugar)
"Super sugars" (glyconutrients)
Stevia—though not "approved" by the FDA as a sweetener, it is often used as such
High protein foods (e.g. fish, meat and eggs)
Most vegetables including sweet potatoes and yams
Beans—40
Salads—low
Avocado—low
Stone ground bread and sprouted grain—low
Barley—36
Rye—48
Most pastas—varies; spaghetti—59 (but very low nutritional value)
Berries—low
Cherries—32
Apples—54
Oranges—63
Peaches—60
Pears—53
Dairy products; whole milk—39 (there are other concerns mentioned previously)
Soy milk—43
Seeds and nuts—as low as 21 (peanuts)
Butter (in moderation—far superior to margarine)
Olive oil
Soy beans—25
Celery—very very low
There is one other huge advantage to using low glycemic foods besides weight control: longevity! According a study by T. Par entitled "Insulin Exposure and Aging Theory" in the Journal of Gerontology - 1997; 43:182-200, high insulin levels, which result from consuming high glycemic foods, promotes accelerated aging. Both calorie restriction and a low glycemic index diet appear to be important for longevity, BUT a diet of low glycemic foods is even more effective than calorie restriction for longevity.

Is Your Goal Really Weight Loss?

Is Your Goal Really Weight Loss?
 by: Nathan Latvaitis

Are you ashamed of your weight? Do you have a goal weight that you want to reach through weight loss? I'd say so, it's been pushed into our brains many times over and over again that "weight loss" is what we want to accomplish. There are weight loss guides, weight loss supplements, and many other things that push "weight loss". Many people even set their goals to be at a certain weight. Additionally, the medical community has developed an "ideal weight" chart, which can further add to the confusion about weight loss.
Now, let me ask you a question. Is your goal really weight loss? Unless you are trying to make a weight class for wrestling or some other sport with weight classes, you may think that your goal is weight loss, but it really isn't. You are trying to lose that flubbery stuff attached to your body called FAT. Correct?
So then, why do we measure our progress by how much we weigh? Why do we step on the bathroom scale and hope that those numbers will be lower than before? You see, our weight is affected by more than just how much fat is on our body. Some other factors include water, muscle, glycogen, and obviously if we have eaten anything earlier or used the bathroom lately.
Our water weight fluctuates constantly. For instance, when we exhale water vapor comes out. When we sweat, we are sweating out water. There are also many more factors that can affect the amount of water in our body. Water is what usually causes those random gains or losses of a pound or two in weight that can make you happy or sad. It is almost physiologically impossible to lose a pound of fat in one day.
One reason the low-carb or no-carb (also called ketogenic) diets are so attractive is because of the large initial loss of weight. However, this weight is not necessarily fat. When carbohydrates are restricted the body has a backup store of them located in the liver and muscles in the form of something called glycogen. The human body can store approximately 400 grams of glycogen. In larger individuals this number can increase. In addition to this, for each gram of glycogen stored in the human body, 3 grams of water are also stored. If you figure it out, this would equate to about 1600 grams (3.5 pounds) of glycogen and water.
When you stop or limit your consumption of carbohydrates, your body starts using its glycogen stores. After a couple of days that 1600 grams (3.5 pounds) of glycogen and water are gone. Also, as an adaptation to the restriction of carbohydrates, your body produces these things called ketones. Ketones also appear to have a diuretic effect, which would mean an even greater loss of water.
In addition to water, if you have been working out lately to speed along your "weight loss" (you mean fat loss, right?) progress you probably have gained some muscle doing so. This gain in muscle can also affect the numbers you see on the scale. Muscle is also more dense than fat.
You may be wondering how you are going to measure your progress now that the scale doesn't mean as much as it used to. Well, there are several methods to measure your body fat percentage. None of these methods are 100% accurate, but they will be much more useful than the use of a scale.
One of the simplest ways is to use a caliper. You can usually find these at your local sporting goods/fitness shop. If you can't find them locally, you can order them off the internet. Calipers measure the thickness of a skin fold on your triceps. Then there are directions that come with the caliper that show you how to use the number you get to derive your body fat %.
If you don't want to go out and buy some calipers, there is a body fat % calculator on my website. The calculator uses the circumference of several parts of your body and then plugs them into a formula developed by the U.S. Navy to derive an approximation of your body fat %.
You can find this calculator here: http://www.weight-loss-resources.com/calculators/bodyfat.html
There are also much more accurate ways to measure your body fat % like buoyancy testing or the use of special lasers.
If you insist on knowing your progress by weight loss and want to use a scale, try to weigh yourself at the same time everyday. Probably the best time would be right when you wake up in the morning and before you do anything.
So, your new goal should be to shoot for fat loss and not weight loss. Don't necessarily trust the scale all the time as it can be deceiving - your weight is affected by more than just how much fat you have gained or lost. In addition, it is almost physiologically impossible to gain or lose a pound of fat in one day.

Be Nutrition Savvy: Seven Simple Ways to Eat Healthy (with Strawberry Orange Sorbet recipe)

Be Nutrition Savvy: Seven Simple Ways to Eat Healthy (with Strawberry Orange Sorbet recipe)
 by: Monique N. Gilbert, B.Sc.

The key to better health is learning the difference between healthy and unhealthy nutrients. The choices we make greatly affect our health. Making a few simple healthy and nutritious changes in our dietary choices can have a profound and positive impact on our health, well-being, energy levels and life span. For instance . . .
Healthy proteins provide the amino acids our bodies require to build and repair lean body mass (like muscles, skin, hair and nails), and are low in saturated fat, cholesterol and chemicals. Good sources include wild salmon, beans, legumes, soy products (tofu, tempeh, TVP), seeds (sunflower, pumpkin), nuts (walnuts, almonds, peanuts) and nut-butters (peanut, almond, cashew, etc.).
Unhealthy proteins are loaded with saturated fat, cholesterol, hormones, or antibiotics (like beef, lamb, beacon and sausage). While they give your body the needed amino acids, they also clog arteries and compromise your immune system.
Healthy fats are unsaturated fats (mono and poly), omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Good sources of these fats include extra virgin olive oil, canola oil, ground flax seeds and walnuts. They help your body absorb fat-soluble antioxidant micronutrients like vitamins A, E, D, and K, and lycopene.
Unhealthy fats are saturated fats and trans fatty acids (trans fats), like butter and margarine. These fats contribute to heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, hypertension and obesity.
Healthy carbohydrates are high in fiber and are considered complex carbohydrates. Good sources include rolled oats, brown rice, whole wheat, broccoli, squash, green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, beans and whole fruit. These help lower cholesterol, aide digestion, regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, and reduce caloric intake.
Unhealthy carbohydrates are high in sugar and are called simple carbohydrates, like candy, white bread, sodas, ice cream, cake and cookies. These spike blood sugar and insulin levels, and increase caloric intake (they are considered empty calories).
Eating nutrient-dense foods that are high in antioxidants, phytochemicals and fiber help the body function optimally, promote overall well-being and improve digestion. These nutrients also help fight and prevent heart disease, cancer and diabetes, strengthens the immune system, slows the aging process, increases energy and improves cognitive performance.
Additionally, as we age our appetite lessens, making it even more critical to choose foods wisely. When every bit counts, picking foods with the highest nutritional profile is more important than ever.
An easy way to make your nutritional choices is to look for foods that are bright in color, for they usually contain more beneficial vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. For example, red and pink grapefruit have the heart-healthy cancer-fighting antioxidant phytochemical called lycopene while white grapefruit does not. Here are seven more simple ways to start eating healthier.
Switch from iceberg lettuce to romaine lettuce. Romaine lettuce has more vitamins and minerals like vitamins A and C, thiamine, riboflavin, calcium and potassium. It also has more fiber than iceberg lettuce.
Eat brown rice instead of white rice. Brown rice naturally has more fiber and riboflavin, and less sugars than white rice. It is digested slower and is more filling.
Switch from white bread to whole-wheat or whole-grain bread. Whole-wheat and whole-grain breads have more fiber, iron and potassium. Slice per slice, they are more filling and satisfying than white bread.
Drink iced teas (black, green and herbal) instead of sodas. Black, green and herbal teas provide antioxidants and phytochemicals that enhance your health. Unlike sodas, you can control the sugar content when brewing your own iced teas.
Choose whole-grain or whole-wheat cereals with bran instead of sugar-coated cereals. Whole-grain cereals and whole-wheat cereals with bran naturally have more protein, fiber, calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin than sugar frosted cereals. Besides having less sugar, they are metabolized slower and are more filling. So you have more energy during the day and you will not get hungry right away.
Switch from cows milk to fortified soymilk. Soymilk contains no cholesterol or hormones, and is extremely low in saturated fat. It also provides isoflavones and other beneficial phytochemicals that promote good health. Fortified soymilks also contain easy to absorb calcium, vitamins D and B6, and some even add extra antioxidants (like vitamins A, C, and E), folate and omega-3.
For dessert, have frozen fruit sorbet instead of ice cream. Frozen fruit sorbet is fat and cholesterol free and has more fiber. It is also loaded with antioxidant vitamins A and C, and contains beneficial phytochemicals.
To get you started, try Monique N. Gilbert's deliciously nutritious homemade sorbet recipe. It is cholesterol-free, and high in antioxidants and fiber.
Strawberry Orange Sorbet
1-1/2 cups frozen strawberries
1/3 cup orange juice
1/3 cup fortified soymilk
2 tablespoons canned pumpkin
1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
Blend in a food processor or blender for 1-2 minutes, until smooth and creamy. Place in the freezer until ready to serve.
Makes about 2 servings

Menopause Couples

Menopause Couples
 by: Cathy Taylor

Couples going through menopause often have unique struggles when coping with the new changes and challenges it brings to them both as individuals, and as partners. It is an inner battle – mentally and physically – for not just women, but men as well. For women, it may be hard to get a male partner to understand and be able to empathise with her challenges. But both sexes go through a form of menopause, and this transition is disruptive and even scary, and a certain level of understanding and communication is required for any one to have a quality relationship at this stage of life.
Nancy Cetel talks about many of the changes couples experience in her book Double Menopause, and what often happens is that emotions, including past hurts, hopes, dreams, etc., that may have been buried or unexpressed in the past, can no longer hidden. It can't be helped – the truth will not be held back any longer. For some women, that shows up in pent up aggression that is taken out on a male partner by pushing him away and/or making him unable to relate to you on a physical level. Men need to know that the loss of desire for sex may be caused from the hormonal changes, but there might also be an emotional element that needs to be dealt with.
It is advisable that men in menopause couples acquaint themselves with the effects of menopause, in themselves and their partners, in order to better understand the changes their relationship is going through. Men soon realize that hormonal imbalances are causing unwanted emotional symptoms in women that could lead to verbal spats every now and then. Men need to be aware that emotional changes are likely to occur and that they are not to blame for them but that their partner may require extra attention, love and outward expressions of caring more now than ever before.
Men need to understand that their sexual drives could also have changed as they experience a slower loss of testosterone. To keep sexual interest, partners may need to put more time and attention into the quality of their sex lives and 'update' themselves on what things turn them on at this stag of the game.
Men need to know that a decrease in estrogen in their lover's bodies – can significantly alter how she thinks and feels about sex. In addition, vaginal discomfort and thinning of the lining of the vagina can make sex painful so it will not be enjoyable for either of them until they find a solution for this.
More than ever this is a critical time for couples to communicate more about the changes they are both experiencing. Christian Northrup talks about 'reversing roles' as couples go through this transition in her book the Wisdom of Menopause. Men often lose a lot of the aggression that once fueled their younger years and they are happier to stay home and engage in more nuturing activities, that they never paid attention to before, such as cooking. Women, on the other hand, may want to venture out into the world and pursue a long-thought about career. They become more aggressive and passionate about accomplishing things. In this way, the couple almost switch roles in the relationship.
Talking a lot, expressing ideas, and bonding with one another again becomes critical during this transition. Men need to know what is happening to their women on a day-to-day basis, and visa versa. Women want men to cheer them on as they undergo significant changes including dealing with physical discomfort, hormonal imbalances, and possibly venturing out into the career world for the first time!
Men need to know that sex isn't going away totally. Explore sexual alternatives and realize that having less sex is not the end of the world! Experiment with vibrators, and oral sex, if you haven't already as these are fine alternatives and to maintain a healthy sex life. Women love toys as much as guys do. Menopause might mean taking more time for foreplay for some women. Get into a habit of communicating your needs to each other and learn to enjoy the changes instead of fighting against them.
The most important thing is that husbands provide a social network for their menopausal wives to rely on. Realize that menopause is only a phase, albeit the end of the old and the beginning of a new one, and it's possible to adjust to the changes by remaining aware. By staying informed of each other's thoughts and feelings and becoming tolerant and understanding to the emotional pains women can go through, menopause couples can overcome most difficulties. And, who knows, you might like the new person you wake up to better! Think of it as another adventure.
