Buying a Wheelchair for a Kid

Buying a Wheelchair for a Kid
 by: Paul Hood

Why do people end up in wheelchairs? And what can be done to help them? Thousands of Americans are involved with spinal cord injuries each year which relegate them to a "chair bound' life. A small percentage of these "riders" have been born with conditions that led to this situation. While many of varying ages may be "chaired" who suffer a temporary loss of mobility. A common concern here is how to provide them with the right wheelchair – particularly children.
There are several factors to be considered when looking for the best suited wheelchair but a basic principle to be kept in mind is that a wheelchair is designed to enhance a patient's mobility. If the case is otherwise, then something is terribly wrong.
A fact to be taken into account also is the chair's dimensions. It should provide enough seating space for the occupant making him comfortably seated. It is not good to sit on something that feels like it's giving you a bear hug. Only it is sideways. I'd definitely get pressure sores all over if I were to sit on that thing.
The selection of your kid's wheelchair involves factors such as transportation. A fundamental issue that has to be resolved here is how to move the chair to and fro a school or maybe a church. Decide which type of wheelchair is best suited for your situation. A mobile child will have to make use of a lightweight chair that is best suited for its young occupant. Then there also is the lifestyle and environment factor. You may opt for a chair that is most aligned for your child's interest. If he is into sports, then take one that is built for the rugged requirements of the event he is in. The environment will also dictate what type of chair you are to choose.
The conglomeration of these factors and other possible ones will be of great help when you finally take into consideration the financial aspect of acquiring a wheelchair. If you can make a good mix out of all these, then well and good. Making the right decision is greatly enhanced by making a sound plan of all factors that are involved.
Many people suffer from injuries and inborn deficiencies that put them to a life in wheelchairs. Their body is broken as well as their spirit and giving them the best equipment for recuperation will certainly help in their overall well-being.

30% Of All People Suffer From Sinus Infections

30% Of All People Suffer From Sinus Infections
 by: Paul Hood

Have you ever felt like your head is going to explode? Felt intense pressure behind your eyes making it next to impossible to concentrate. Had headaches, pain in the upper jaws, fever, coughs and runny nose? If your answer is yes, then you could be suffering from Sinus infection.
According to Mark Cichocki, our sinuses are air pockets located inside the bones in the skull. They are located to either side of the nose (maxillary), behind and in between the eyes (ethmoid), in the forehead (frontal), and there is one much further back in the head (sphenoid). These spaces contain mucus that drains by way of small pin holes in the sinuses. When these sinuses grow swollen and prevents the proper drain of mucus, sinusitis is the result. Sinusitis attacks may last until 12 weeks or more depending on the gravity of the infection. Unlike colds which is viral, sinusitis may sometimes be caused by bacteria. The accumulated mucus from the plugged sinuses serves as the breeding ground for these microorganisms. At least 30% of the population suffers from sinusitis each year.
Sinusitis can be treated with the right dose of antibiotics usually from fourteen to twenty-one days of continued medication. After that, another week is devoted to continued intake of the antibiotics even after the symptoms have disappeared. However, immediate measures have to taken if the medication causes negative effects. A change in medicine can be done. Sinusitis that have come to the chronic stage may sometimes be caused not by bacteria but by fungus making it prudent to have a sample of the infected material to determine the real culprit and be able to decide which antibiotic is best suited for the condition.
Preventing the occurrence of sinus infections require the appropriate amounts of rest, a well-balanced diet, and exercise can help the body function at its most efficient level and maintain a general resistance to infections. Eliminating environmental factors, such as climate and pollutants, is not always possible, but they can often be controlled. As always, it is good to have preventive measures undertaken to decrease your chances of contracting this disease. Like what they say, "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."
Having a strong constitution and immune system is our best defense against diseases like this and it is of outmost importance to know the factors that can weaken it.

Natural Treatment for Sinus Infections

Natural Treatment for Sinus Infections
 by: Paul Hood

Bothered by your sinuses? You are not alone. An estimated 15% of people in America suffer from sinus infections. Treating this disorder should be a priority as it has been found out to have a significant effect on worker productivity and school performance on an individual level.
Our sinuses are hollow spaces in our facial bones designed to help moisturize the air we breathe. Each of these is connected with an opening to the nose that serves as a catalyst for the exchange of air and mucus. Problem arises when these sinuses get plugged trapping mucus inside with these serving as possible breeding grounds for harmful microorganisms particularly viruses, fungi and bacteria which are considered as main culprits of this disorder. Sinus infections may also be triggered by the common cold.
The symptoms of sinusitis may include fever, weakness, tiredness, coughing that is more severe at night and runny nose or nasal congestion. It may also include bad breathe, green nasal discharge and pressure or a headache in the eyes, nose or cheek area.
To remedy this aggravating infection, we can turn to natural alternatives to healing to give us our very much needed relief. Aside from being cheap and safe, it also is an effective way to counter sinus infections.
Many ways have been devised to seek relief from this menace. For one, you can inhale steam to unclog your sinuses. Add a drop of lavender or eucalyptus oil in a pot of water to help make the release of trapped mucus faster. I myself have had an episode like this but thanks to steam, I'm now breathing fine. You can also resort to massaging particular spots in your face to stimulate quick relief from facial pains. Eating spicy foods is a surefire way to get those trapped mucus down the drain. There still are a numerous ways to combat sinus infections. A consultation with your naturopath (trained specialists in a separate and distinct healing art which uses non-invasive natural medicine) will provide you a diagnosis of your ailment and give you a custom-made mode of treatment that is most appropriate for you.
More and more treatments may be devised but nothing beats a strong immune system. A well-maintained body is a natural fortress that will shield you from any disorder. Keep your body healthy by having adequate amounts of sleep and a good diet to keep your immune system at an optimal state. Keep your surroundings clean and free from possible allergens that can cause sinus infections and other diseases.

Wheelchair Travel Tips

Wheelchair Travel Tips
 by: Nash Ville

Traveling on Holidays has always been fun. Actually, it has become one of our itineraries during this most anticipated season of the year. But you know what guys; even disabled persons love to travel. They love to stay out of the confines of their wheelchairs, enjoy their lives to the fullest, and realize that there's still a wonderful world that's waiting for them out there. However, there are certain considerations for wheelchair users to make in preparing and planning for a travel.
According to the article "The Disabled Wheelchair Traveler – Holiday Tips" at www.apparelyzed.com, the author has put together some travel tips which will hopefully help in planning a holiday for a wheelchair user. Most of the tips are common sense but there may be a few you hadn't thought of! To sum up, traveling tips where presented in this article for these people in terms of locations and hotels, flights and travel, and medication and mobility.
In choosing where to go and stay, if you book your hotel directly by telephone, email the hotel and ask them to confirm your booking by sending you a booking confirmation reference code. This will be an evidence of your booking when you get there, just in case for some reason the hotel denies a booking was made. This truly happens! In choosing the plane for your trip, remember that not all airline companies are equal when it comes to the disabled traveler. Regarding your medication and mobility, some airlines will require a "fit to travel certificate" from your doctor and a letter to say you are taking specific drugs. The letter from your doctor may come in handy if you are stopped by customs as well if you are on powerful medication.
Honestly, it was through this article when I finally realized how really hard it is to have a disability. I thought having a wheelchair is just enough for someone to continue to live normally but then, it's certainly not! Instead of being given due concern by "more normal" people while traveling, there is still a bit of discrimination among them. Let's face it; we can never do away with our being rude to these people sometimes.
After all, everybody deserves to enjoy everything this world can offer. Whether you are disabled or not, you must always take extra effort in taking care of yourself from unexpected incidents especially during travel. It's better to set certain bounds on your activities to avoid unwanted things to happen. As for persons having disabilities, take your time to enjoy but always remember that your actions are a bit limited already compared to others.
There you have it, you can now pack your things and have a good time!

Sports Assists?

Sports Assists?
 by: Nash Ville

Persons who have become disabled since birth and/or even due to accidents are more open-minded nowadays. They think of their situation as something that doesn't tell them that it's already the end of the world. Otherwise, it gives them the chance to ponder on the other things that they can do now. They do engage in various activities that can help them overcome their condition and become more confident about themselves. In fact, some of them already established integrity and a good reputation in various fields including sports. Along this fact is their need to have something – I'm talking about wheelchairs – that can "support" them in carrying out these activities.
According to the article "Wheelchair Seat Angle" by Gary Karp which was posted at www.spinlife.com, your chair seat does not necessarily need to be parallel to the ground. Seats can slope down toward the back. The angle of the seat compared to the ground is known as "seat dump" or "rake". Having some degree of seat dump makes those persons with disabilities more stable in their seat. People with higher level spinal disabilities gain security and safety with the use of seat dump. Manual riders are able to exert more push with less effort through their arms and shoulders.
This so-called seat angle in wheelchairs helps keep your weight in place, preventing you from sliding forward because it controls stability and safety for the rider. Seat angle or "squeeze" is when the seat has permanent slopes from high in the front to low in the back. However, the disadvantage is that seat angle increases pressure and shear forces increasing the risk of skin breakdown, and too much angle can cause scoliosis, disk problems, curvature of the spine, and sacral pressure sores. A more pronounced seat dump might also make it more difficult for you to transfer in and out of your chair. Doesn't sound fun, right?
I believe the wheelchair was primarily invented to make disabled persons feel comfortable all the time. We all know that these people indulge in sport activities, too. In fact, I've heard about this Paralympics for persons with disabilities. There are also some athletics events for them using their wheelchairs to win the race. What a great way to honor them and make them realize that they're still fortunate for the opportunity to have a beautiful life they can spend in this wonderful world!
Above all these, we can still never deny the fact that wheelchairs have become a big part of the lives of disabled persons and it will continue to be such. And indeed, these people also have a place in the wonderful world of sports after all!

Wheelchair Safety

Wheelchair Safety
 by: Paul Hood

Safety on the wheels is a concern for everyone. The question is how.
Keeping a safe environment for wheelchair users is easier said than done. There are a diverse set of factors that are involved which make ensuring safety on wheels quite difficult. However numerous these may be, a general set of tips is helpful to decrease the occurrence of wheelchair-related accidents if not totally eradicate it.
We are working on a premise that the rider is able enough to carry himself using the wheelchair. Cases when the patient needs assistance for mobility are another case and won't be hold much weight here though there are some advice that will be applicable to them as well.
A very sensible thing to follow is to keep your wheelchair in a good working condition. Much like other things say a car, the wheelchair requires ample amounts of maintenance to keep it in a tip-top working condition. A well maintained wheelchair significantly reduces the risk of mishaps happening. Just imagine yourself cruising with your wheelchair on the expressway negotiating a 100 mile/hour run when suddenly your wheel just runs off. The result won't be pretty. Of course it's an overstatement but from the example you can see the possible outcome of this negligence. A sudden breakdown of your wheelchair will most likely result to a broken hip or a twisted ankle to name a few. The condition of you wheel is very important to your well-being and safety.
Never put things in your chair that are likely to cause you to tip over like heavy books at the back part as this may cause you to tip over. It is intended to be used as a seat and not as a shelf. Also, avoid staying in areas where you are most likely to be hit like the back of doors. You'll be sent flying if someone suddenly opens the door. Do not let children play with your chair. They might end up riding one as well.
Like all normal activities, you must exercise enough caution when riding you wheelchair. For instance, if you need to cross a street take the customary stop, look and listen routine. Be extra conscious in mounting your chair as your mobility is significantly reduced.
It still is best to take every precautionary step to make sure no accident happen. Though we can never totally prevent these from taking place, at least the chances of it happening is greatly reduced. Be aware of your surroundings and be aware of yourself. It is always better safe than sorry.

Sinus Headache

Sinus Headache
 by: Carla Ballatan

I never remember a year in my life wherein I'm free of colds and asthma attacks – whenever these occur, I get very short-tempered, I gasp for breath, even eating and lying down is terribly tiresome, my nose is full of mucus…ugh! Luckily, though I'm always having colds and allergic of certain allergens, I never suffered worse sinus infections.
My mom is different. She is a terrible allergic – very sensitive to almost all types of allergens. Whenever she has cold, it lasts too long and she frequently complains of tender cheekbones that are painful to touch and sinus headaches, too. This infection or inflammation of the sinuses affects about 31 million Americans each year.
Sinuses are hollow spaces within the bones around our nose. They are connected to the nasal cavities by small openings. Our sinuses drain mucus into our noses. Did you know that a person's nose and sinuses are supposed to produce up to a quart of mucus and secretions every day? Amazing, huh? This travels through the nose clearing out bacteria and pollutants, then it goes backward and down the throat. Our bodies does do wonders without us realizing some things going on… However, problem starts when an excessive amount of mucus is produced.
Common colds and allergies are the usual causes of sinus infections. The infection can be bacterial, viral or fungal. Now I know that when my mother has a cold or allergy, nasal membranes swell and can actually close off the opening of her sinuses. This blockage prevents the mucus from draining and creates the perfect environment within the sinuses for any trapped bacteria or virus to grow.
Mom's sinus headaches? It is said that this is a sharp pain that often comes with sinus infections. Or caused either by the inflammation of the sinus linings or the pressure created by trapped air and the buildup of mucus in the sinuses. Sinus headache is a severe pain that encompasses more than just the cheekbones. However, there are many who claim that sinus headaches are not just caused by sinus infection. While some say that sinus headaches occur when the sinus infection is already chronic.
If you are one of the many suffering sinus infections and sinus headache, I'd advice to stop supporting your local pharmacy by purchasing decongestants and other pain relievers. My mom have tried them, was relieved for a while but the problem is that it sets her up for rebound headaches.
We were afraid that her attacks of sinus headaches may become chronic already so we did the next best thing on cases like this – we had a doctor listen and assess her condition. A headache specialist would also be guaranteed to take this problem seriously. They can be found by asking your doctor, the American Medical Association, a hospital or other reputable referral service. When you go for a check-up, be prepared with a headache diary.
The truth regarding your sinus headache and its cause can be truly known only after a medical assessment of an expert. You will also know what steps to take to stop the pain altogether and prevent it from coming back. In having diagnosis and treatment on this approach … I'd say you did the most intelligent thing, like we did for Mother

You Can Avoid Sinusitis!

You Can Avoid Sinusitis!
 by: Carla Ballatan

Imagine yourself not being able to appreciate the beauty of a new day…and being cranky enough not to get on well with your workmates' good-natured conversations…or not being able to join a special friend in a date --- All because of sinusitis!
But, it may only take proper understanding of what sinusitis is and how it is caused to chart up the right nourishment and other healthy exercises for you to end your misery.
There are different degrees of sinusitis, with different causes – acute sinusitis is often caused by viral or bacterial infections of the nose, throat, and upper respiratory tract, or from an underlying dental infection. Chronic sinusitis may be caused by growth inside the nose, injuries to nasal bones, smoking and other irritating fumes and smells. Meanwhile, allergic sinusitis can be caused by hay fever, food allergies or poor eating habits.
By knowing this types of sinusitis, we would also know what medicines we need to take, watch out our food intake and other activities that we could do in order to avoid getting sinusitis.
First and foremost, we need to remember what foods may cause or aggravate our sinus problems. Milk and other dairy products, sugars, fatty foods, lack of green vegetables are mucus-forming foods. You must learn to control intake of these food groups if you are already at the onset of serious sinus infections. Common food allergies like wheat, eggs, citrus, corn, and peanut butter may also cause sinus problems.
Natural nutritional approaches are also entailed. It's about time to drink plenty of liquids, especially water. A glass of lemon juice and water first thing in the morning may also help thin mucus.
Try Linda Rector Page's 3-day mucus cleansing liquid diet in Healthy Living. A short water fast or a very light diet – involving fruit and vegetable broth may also apply to you, as per recommendation of Burton Golberg Group in Alternative Medicine.
If you are more used on vitamin/mineral supplements, here are several recommendations for immune system support: Vitamin C: 500 mg every two hours; Bioflavonoids: 1000 mg per day ; Vitamin A: 5,000 IU per day; Beta-carotene: 25,000 IU per day; Vitamin E: 400 IU per day ; Zinc: 30-50mg per day.
Botanical medicines for sinus problems may also be taken like bromelain (250-500mg between meals). Effective herbs to clear sinuses include: comfrey/fenugreek compresses; fenugreek/thyme tea; ephedra tea as bronchodilator; lobelia extract, and horseradish. You may also try purple coneflower, elder flowers and poke root.
For overall immune function Echinacea, goldenseal, germanium and garlic can be helpful, Check out some health food stores that sell these pre-made herbal sinus preparations.
There are other enjoyable ways on relieving sinus problems, like taking a hot sauna for 20 minutes a day. Hot liquids and steaming face and head with eucalyptus may relieve congestion and sinus pressure.

Do Magnetic Bracelets Ease Arthritis Pain?: Five Things You Must Know Before Trying Magnetic Therapy

Do Magnetic Bracelets Ease Arthritis Pain?: Five Things You Must Know Before Trying Magnetic Therapy
 by: Tom Frost

Although the idea of magnetic therapy has been around for centuries, the use of magnetic bracelets to ease pain is a hot topic in medical news today.
According to the December 2004 issue of the British Medical Journal, one study concluded that wearing magnetic bracelets can significantly reduce the pain of arthritis. With Celebrex and Vioxx recently called into question as treatments for arthritis, the study is good news to the over 70 million Americans suffering from the disease.
Arthritis affects one in three adults in the United States, and over half of those feel that there is nothing that can be done to ease their pain. Many of those who used to take Vioxx or Celebrex are currently choosing to suffer in silence, confused about the best medication to take.
This is a crying shame. There are a number of alternative pain management techniques-- including massage, acupuncture, ice/heat treatments, mindfulness training, and magnetic therapy—and now is a perfect time to test them.
In the study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers acknowledged the need for more research regarding the placebo effect. We know that believing in any particular remedy is more likely to create a positive subjective report of improvement. It's also true that taking any kind of action to alleviate pain results in some sense of ease.
Does the placebo effect play a role in magnetic therapy? Of course it does—just as it plays a role in the effectiveness of medication. Does this mean the therapy isn't useful? No. If it works, it works—and isn't that what you really care about?
If you're considering wearing magnetic bracelets to test the idea of magnetic therapy, here are five points to keep in mind:
Trying something is better than trying nothing.
Trying something inexpensive is better than investing in a costly remedy that may not work for you.
Trying something natural and noninvasive is preferable to beginning a new medication.
It is easier to tell if a natural therapy is helping if you are not taking any pain medication that might interfere with the results.
Trying something and finding that it works for you is extremely valuable even if you are unable to find documentation to support your results.
If you're suffering from the pain of arthritis, you might as well test magnetic therapy. It can't hurt, and it might really help.
And that's what matters.

Therapeutic Massage Research Findings

Therapeutic Massage Research Findings
 by: P. Sidney Parker

Research on massage therapy, and its benefits, continues to show that it reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases endorphins, and the circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Research has also shown that therapeutic massage relaxes muscles, and improves range of motion (ROI).
While massage does not increase muscle strength, massage can increase muscle tone. Therapeutic massage also helps the body's homostatic functions thereby decreasing the amount of time needed to recover after exercise or injury which is often caused by muscle stiffness (inflexibility). Massage helps in keeping the proper amount of fluid circulating between muscle fibers, and in rehydrating dehydrated fibers.

Joan Borysenko (www.joanborysenko.com), a medical scientist, licensed clinical psychologist, and cofounder of the Mind/Body Clinic at Harvard Medical School, had this to say when interviewed by the Massage Journal, in 1999:
"Often times people are stressed in our culture. Stress-related disorders make up between 80-and-90 percent of the ailments that bring people to family-practice physicians. What they require is someone to listen, someone to touch them, someone to care. That does not exist in modern medicine.
One of the complaints heard frequently is that physicians don't touch their patients any more. Touch just isn't there. Years ago massage was a big part of nursing. There was so much care, so much touch, so much goodness conveyed through massage. Now nurses for the most part are as busy as physicians. They're writing charts, dealing with insurance notes, they're doing procedures and often there is no room for massage any more.
I believe massage therapy is absolutely key in the healing process not only in the hospital environment but because it relieves stress, it is obviously foundational in the healing process any time and anywhere."

In the past century research on the benefits massage therapy has yeilded some very encouraging findings.
There is research showing that Office workers felt less stress, experienced heightened alertness and increased performance, when getting regular massage sessions. Some of the other findings from research on the benefits of massage therapy are:
University students, in New Jersey, massaged before an exam showed a significant decrease in anxiety and respiration rates. It was also found they had a measurable increase their white blood cell count and in the production of T-cells so important to the immune system.
After receiving therapeutic massage a group of cancer patients experienced reduced pain and anxiety.
An university study found that mothers who had recently suffered the death of a child, experienced reduced levels of depression after receiving therapeutic massage.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) conducted studies that found therapeutic massage was beneficial in improving weight gain in HIV infants.
Reseachers at the Touch Research Institute (University of Miami) found therapeutic massage helpful in reducing blood pressure. The same research has found that therapeutic massage helps in reducing pain in migraine sufferers.
Some of the other benefits of therapeutic massage are:
The skin Improves tone and elasticity Improves skin nourishment Aids in normalizing glandular functions
Skeletal system (Myofascial) Relieves stiff joints Assists in proper body alignment
Muscular system Reduces fibrosis and adhesions in fibers Assists in maintaining flexibity Can relax or stimulate fibers Relieves tension, and stiffness
Circulatory system Improves cell nutrition Improves cell oxygen supply Decreases blood pressure
Nervous system Stimulates nerves Relieves insomnia Promotes a state of well-being
Lymphatic system Increases circulation Flushes out toxins and metabolic wastes
Athletes Improves flexibility and ROI Relieves tight and sore muscles Decreases recovery time after exercise or injury

Taking The Pimples Out Of PMS

Taking The Pimples Out Of PMS
 by: Naweko San-Joyz

"Noooo!" shrieks Shelly. Gazing into the morning mirror, Shelly sizing up the latest addition to her face, an anticipated, though uninvited pimple loitering on her chin. "It's like freaking clockwork."
Ironically, these pimples do arrive like clockwork according to dermatologist Alan R. Shalita, MD. During PMS, some women- like Shelly- release more androgens (male hormones) from their adrenal glands. This hormone release alters the skin pH and increases facial oil secretion, a combination that encourages an onslaught of acne eruptions.
Dr. Shalita's research of how the menstrual cycle affects acne confirmed that premenstrual acne flare-ups are a reality for millions of women. However, Dr. Shalita offers a means for forecasting PMS pimples by pointing out that a previous investigation has demonstrated a link between the skin's pore size and the menstrual cycle.
For example, the study showed that the skin's pores are smallest in days 15 to 20 of a 28-day menstrual cycle. Facial oil secretion increased in days 21 to 26 of the cycle and decreased again two days before menstruation. The worst premenstrual acne flares occurred on day 22 of the average 28-day cycle.
It appears that Mother Nature, a procreative mastermind, designed the skin of women to look most radiant and alluring when fair-game maidens most likely have an egg in utero- awaiting a sperm bath.
If you are fantasizing that Mrs. Nature will ease up and that you will grow out of acne, dermatologist Alan R. Shalita, MD omens, "Acne that worsens during a women's monthly cycle isn't something that women will grow out of as they get older".
"That's some consolation doc," snorts Shelly. Nevertheless, lay your worries aside ladies. You can derail PMS pimples with preparation.
Counteract the excess oil secretion during your PMS days by using clay masks to extract excess oils. Additionally, ensure that you are eating foods containing Omega 3 such as olive oil, salmon, spinach, mustard greens and rainbow trout. The essential fatty acid found in these foods helps the body eliminate pro-inflammatory substances that can trigger acne. Also, during PMS, give yourself permission to relax. Rest removes stress from your adrenal glands and helps reduce the amount of androgens circulating in your system.
In a word, you take the "pimples" out of PMS with preparation. And preparation is futile without practice. Unlike party planning, you can decide what shows up on your face.

Depression: Escape Your Mental Prison

Depression: Escape Your Mental Prison
 by: Jesse S. Somer

Depression: The way out could be in changing the way you perceive the world around you.
There is an illness all around me in modern society that seems to be spreading like the Black Plague once did in Europe so long ago. It's called depression, have you heard of it? Has it affected you? The more I look, the more I see it in so many people in my life, including myself. Depression sucks. It's a real drag, and I mean real drag. It is different from the feelings of unhappiness that all humans have to deal with in their lives. It is being in a solitary prison where you are the only one who can see the walls; you are the jailor, the guard, and the prisoner all rolled into one. Sounds like fun huh? Well, we better become more aware of it because there are certain aspects of contemporary life that are causing more and more souls to lock themselves up, some believing that they have no hope of ever finding the key out.
If you look up depression on the Internet through a Google search query you will find a lot of different ways and means to manage or treat the problem. There are Eastern and Western approaches, psychological and spiritual; today there are 15,400,000 links about the subject. It seems to be on everybody's mind and yet we don't give it the general social awareness that we do for other illnesses. This is probably because there are so many stigmas around faults with the human mind. Broken bones and cancer we can understand or at least think we do; but we touch on a soft spot when we find a problem with that infinitely complex, helpful, magical device we call the brain.
Recently I went to a public talk by a world famous Psychologist named Dorothy Rowe who was selling her new book, 'Depression: The way out of your prison". I'm not going to tell you that she has all the answers, but I did like the different approach that she took to the illness. She's not against modern medication, but she feels that it can be only part of the solution. Of course there are types of intense clinical depression that need certain chemicals to rebalance the brain to a 'normal' working order, but for all depression she feels that the focus could be shifted from a management to a prevention paradigm.
Dr Rowe focuses on the assertion that depression comes when one's structure of interpreting the world around you has been affected by some deeply negative occurrences (usually in one's youth). Her theory suggests that if a certain event happens to one hundred people, they will all probably interpret the experience in an individual, different way; the perceived 'reality' having been a resulting construct from one's life experiences. For example: Let's say you get fired from your job. Just about everyone is going to feel a general unhappiness and grieve over the subsequent period. However, many people have built positive, optimistic ways of seeing life and will just go on and feel as though the layoff was another necessary step or a momentary setback on the way to their life's goals and dreams. "Whatever doesn't kill me, makes me stronger." is a common sentiment from this type of personality.
However, a person who is prone to perceiving the world around them as threatening and dangerous (maybe their parents never gave them positive affirmations as a child, or even put them down emotionally) may believe that the loss of this job is a relative 'destruction' of their world, their safety, their confidence. This is where the illness of depression can dig its sharp teeth in. This is a pretty mellow analogy; in reality some people have gone through hellish childhoods filled with abuse, neglect and addiction. When this type of person then has to deal with the loss of a loved one or relationship break-up, you can imagine that they would be much more prone to perceiving the experience as deeply negative. Dr. Rowe believes that these constructed structures of perceiving what happens to you can be altered, thus giving rise to a new way of seeing reality. The main idea is based around the idea that we must learn to change the ways in which we see ourselves.
If we can learn to accept ourselves with all our faults and imperfections, and realize that if we are doing our best to be a loving and giving person everyday, then we can see ourselves as being worthy, and that all is well. Then if someone else treats us badly, ignores us, or says we aren't good enough, we can know and acknowledge that they are the person with the problem and that we don't necessarily need their affirmation or acceptance. We can then wait for positive people to come into our lives, as like attracts like. Soon enough we will find that there is a group of people that will stand by our side and support us when things get bad because we do the same for ourselves and for them.
One of the most powerful insights I had from this experience was the sheer number of people in the room for Dr. Rowe's speech. Each and every one had been or known someone close who had been depressed at one time in their life, thinking that they were completely alone in the world. When you see a big group of people together whom have all felt alone, you might just see into the true paradox of reality? If everyone who got depressed realized that it is a common occurrence, and connected to others in similar cases, it definitely could be a step towards healing. Could the Internet take a leading role in this process?

Find a Doctor

Find a Doctor
 by: Hugo Gallegos

This is usually a simple task. Open up your phone book (Yellow Pages) and look for one in your area; or ask your primary care physician for a referral to see a specialist. Better still, go online – there is an abundance of free directories listing doctors.
How to find a doctor?
There's no magical route to finding the right doctor. If you have a primary care physician just call him or her and make an appointment. If you don't have a primary care physician, try the route suggested above. Or, if you feel you need specialist care, you can save time and money by going directly to a specialist with your particular medical problem. In the old days most patients would ask their primary care physician for a referral. While this is still done, more and more patients are going directly to a specialist for their medical needs.
Tips on how to look for a doctor
Find out the history of medical symptoms or diseases that run in your family, or ones you or your family members may currently have.
Once you have identified the problem, let's say a history of asthma, you may want to find a primary care provider who is (double) Board Certified in "Pulmonary Disease" and "Internal Medicine."
Depending on how far you are willing to travel, and what type of doctor you are searching for, look for three hospitals near your home. Then go to Google and type in their names. Most hospitals have websites which feature a physician directory.
If you are looking for a specialist, such as a plastic surgeon, or a dermatologist, for example, use (example) your three favorite search engines and type: "Florida Dermatologist," or "Florida Miami Dermatologist." You may want to switch the wording around and try a few different methods.
Make sure your doctor is Board Certified, and that his or her respective field of specialization is listed, by consulting the American Board of Medical Specialists official directory of specialists, published by Marquis Who's Who. The ABMS directory is available at most public libraries, as well as hospital, university and medical libraries.
Next, visit the Federation of State Medical Boards (online) to see if any serious disciplinary action has been taken against the doctor you've chosen.
Where can I research my doctor?
Once you have selected a doctor, you have several options. Most patients like to run a background check on the doctor they have chosen. The best place to do this research is the Federation of State Medical Boards.
What makes a good doctor?
Based on my extensive research over the past five years, my recommended criteria for finding a good doctor are:
The number of years since the doctor received his/her MD or DO.
Whether the doctor is Board Certified or double Board Certified in his/her respective specialty field.
In the case of a surgeon, a high volume of surgical procedures he/she has completed
Doctors who have had one or no malpractice lawsuits, with no disciplinary action taken against them.
Doctors who are affiliated to at least one medical society related to their specialty.
Bottom line
We all know there are no guarantees when it comes to receiving the highest quality health care. We all know there are shady doctors, and good doctors; and then there are those who are renowned for their expertise, who rank amongst the highest in their field. It's up to you to do your homework.

Genital Warts Natural and Alternative Treatment Remedies

Genital Warts Natural and Alternative Treatment Remedies
 by: S.A. Smith

Have you been diagnosed with genital warts caused by the HPV virus? If so, your physician has probably advised you of the more conventional treatments available such as pharmaceutical ointments, cryosurgery (freezing), electrocautery (burning) or laser treatment. While many people undergo these types of treatments, some opt for a less invasive natural solution by visiting a Naturopathic doctor. While there is no cure for the hpv virus, there are specific natural treatments that may help reduce and eliminate the warts over time.
TOPICAL TREATMENTS
Before resorting to medically invasive treatments many people are choosing to try alternative treatments that may naturally help reduce or eliminate genital warts. Many holistic treatment resources advise that different remedies will work for different individuals so it may take a little trial and error to find one suited to your needs. Experiment with applying the following directly to the infected wart areas:
Goldenseal: considered to have natural antibiotic properties and may destroy many types of viral infections.
Tea Tree Oil: strong anti-viral and anti-bacterial aromatherapy essential oil.
Aloe Vera: healing and soothing properties.
Garlic Oil: or even raw garlic is believed to promote white blood cells ability to fight infection.
Sour Apple Juice: it is believed the beneficial effect is from the magnesium in the apple
Most of these topical treatments have not been clinically proven as an effective treatment for genital warts, but have shown to have positive benefits is related studies or in fighting other types of viral infections. Other notable mentions for natural topical remedies also include; cabbage juice, banana skin, chickweed, dandelion juice, rubber plant, and pineapple juice.
HERBAL IMMUNE BOOSTING SUPPLEMENTS
Antiviral herbal remedies taken internally to boost the body's natural ability to fight viral infections include the following supplements:
Echinacea: known for its ability to boost the immune system, is important in the treatment of genital warts.
Astragalus: used in Chinese herbal medicine for over 2000 years, Astragalus is known to improve the body's ability to fight off viral and bacterial infections, such as the Human Papilloma Virus, by boosting the body's immune system. Astragalus has been taken as a supplement by people undergoing chemotherapy to help restore their tired immune systems.
Garlic powder tablets: Once used in 1550 BC by Egyptians as an external treatment for tumors, garlic has long since been recognized for it's medicinal values. Of the many benefits garlic has on the human body, it promotes the ability of white blood cells to fight infection. A natural antibiotic, garlic is effective in countering bacteria, fungus and viral conditions.
Vitamins: Supplementation with high doses of vitamin A, B complex, vitamin C, E, zinc, lactobacillus acidophilus and the amino acid L-cysteine have shown to have immune boosting benefits.
In addition, other noted antiviral herbal supplements include dandelion, greater celandine (cheilidonium), mullein, thuja, houseleek, goldenseal, calendula, lomatium, pau d'arco and wintergreen.
DIET AND LIFESTYLE
It is also suggested that you take a proactive approach in improving your health through lifestyle. By reducing sugars and refined foods, reducing red meat, increasing vegetables and fruit, taking the necessary vitamins and minerals, drinking plenty of water, regular exercise and getting proper rest, you will boost your immune system which will help in fighting off the virus.
EMOTIONAL STRESS
Because genital warts are considered a sexually transmitted disease, diagnosis will often have an emotional impact on the sufferer. Many people will experience a whole gamut of feelings including guilt, fear, rage, isolation and helplessness. HPV is one of the most common viruses in the world with an estimated 20 million sufferers, so as you can see you are not alone. It is believed that emotional health has a direct impact on your physical health. Therefore it is important to work through these feelings. Contact your local STD clinic for a list of support groups available in your area, or there are countless support groups and message boards available on the internet. Through seeing other people's experiences, you will see HPV is a very manageable virus.
Since most of these natural remedies are considered reasonably safe, they may be worth investigating before turning to invasive and costly medical treatments. Ensure to discuss any alternative treatment strategies with your health care practitioner before starting them. Create Your Own Effective Acne Treatment

Create Your Own Effective Acne Treatment
 by: Naweko San-Joyz

Since 1982 Accutane has been a reliable, if not controversial, drug for treating severe acne. Now with FDA representative David J. Graham's statement that Accutane should be taken off the market, and pharmaceutical manufacturer La Roche's defense of Accutane's safety in a Florida courtroom, access to Accutane faces mounting restrictions.
Author of Acne Messages: Crack the code of your zits and say goodbye to acne, Naweko San-Joyz, understands the concerns facing acne sufferer's who desire Accutane-like results. San-Joyz conducted research to inexpensively mimic the effects of Accutane. " Accutane provokes five acne-fighting actions that anyone can replicate using nutrition and self-care", explains San-Joyz.
Reduce excess oil secretion:
Accutane is a derivative of vitamin A and reduces the secretion of oil by the oil glands.
Foods that supply the body with Vitamin A and beta-carotene (which is converted to vitamin A by the body) include: Liver, oily fish, whole eggs, carrots, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.
Encourage extreme shedding of the skin:
Using a peel is the easiest method to promote shedding of the skin. Exfoliation releases the build-up of dead skin cells, oils and bacteria trapped in the pores, which could lead to the formation of blemishes.
Extreme peels
Peels come in varying degrees, from mild to harsh. The trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel is an extreme peel that can cost from $100 to $1000 depending on the degree of the treatment. It is only performed in a doctor's office. The TCA is not a save all however. The peel can make the skin sensitive to the sun cause hyper-pigmentation.
Home use peels:
Several over-the-counter peels contain papaya enzymes or glycolic acid. These peels lightly exfoliate the skin and are safe for weekly use.
Reduce the spread of bacterial infection:
Using an astringent such as witch hazel or apple cider vinegar to disinfect the skin significantly reduces the presence of bacteria on the face. This reduction limits skin inflammation and the likelihood of a pimple developing.
Enhance Fat Metabolism:
Free fatty acids can irritate the skin and provoke acne eruptions. Reducing intake of foods containing hydrolyzed fats will improve fat metabolism. However, do consume essential fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6, which are found in foods such as salmon and olive oil. These essential fats aid the gastrointestinal tract eliminate pro-inflammatory substances, which reduces the possibility of experiencing acne lesions.
Reduce inflammation:
A strong immune system serves as a buffer against inflammation. Stress reducing activities such as exercising, eating a well-balanced diet and sleeping well boosts the immune system. A diet supplemented with B-Complex, zinc and vitamins C and E likewise enhances the effectiveness of the immune system.
Like Accutane, these five steps will not work overnight. Accutane works via creating a bodily environment that is not conducive to acne. By adhering to the nutritional and aesthetic steps above, anyone can attain clear skin while simultaneously augmenting their health. Fighting Burn-out: Natural Help For Stress, Fatigue and Adrenal Insufficiency

Fighting Burn-out: Natural Help For Stress, Fatigue and Adrenal Insufficiency
 by: Dr. Rita Louise

The adrenal or "stress glands" are small, triangular shaped glands located on the top of the kidneys. Their function is to prepare the body's resources to run or fight through the releasing of specific hormones. When this primitive, instinctive response is activated, blood is diverted from digestive system while our blood pressure, pulse, blood sugar levels increase. At the same time, our pupils dilate and the speed of reflexes increases. All of this happens as a way to ensure our survival.
In modern times, we don't' have to worry about becoming dinner for a hungry tiger or being trampled by a herd of buffalo. Our bodies, however, automatically respond the same way when we are under physical, emotional or mental stress. Many of us live in a state of constant stress that strains our bodies to the point of exhaustion. Over time, and through repetition, this can impact the way the adrenal glands function, causing us to experience adrenal insufficiency or "burn-out".
If you think about it, our adrenal glands can be likened to the batteries in a flashlight. They are filled with a charge that is used to run the body and give us that extra edge in times of need. Each time we use our flashlight, we drain some of the charge from our batteries. Fortunately for us, our batteries are automatically recharged when we eat healthy and get lots of rest. If, on the other hand, we use our flashlight all of the time, and don't recharge our batteries regularly, it is only a matter of time before the light starts to dim and eventually goes out all together.
Technically speaking, adrenal insufficiency refers to the inability of adrenal glands to produce the proper quantity of hormones needed to run the body. It should not to be confused with Addison's disease, which is when the adrenal glands fail to produce hormones or shutdown completely. The most common symptom of adrenal insufficiency is fatigue. Other symptoms include: not feeling rested after sleep, inability to deal with life stressors, poor memory, a low sex drive, frequent infections due to a suppressed immune system, inability to concentrate, depression, mood swings, irritability, weight gain, weakness and hormonal imbalances.
There are a number of reasons why people experience adrenal insufficiency. It can be from a genetic or congenital abnormality, but the most common one is stress. Some of us force our bodies to run or fight all the time. Life challenges, financial pressures, relationship issues and unresolved emotional concerns will eventually deplete your adrenal glands. Internal stressors such as allergies, physical disease, nutritional deficiencies, food and environmental toxins can also put pressure on the body's natural reserves. In addition, stimulants, such as sugar, white flower, caffeine, as well as constant exposure to loud music, loud noise or EM radiation can take a toll on our adrenal glands.
Recommendations For Wellness
First and foremost, stop forcing yourself to keep going and start listening to your body. It will tell you what it needs. If it is tired, try closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. Taking a break, even a short one is a great way to let your body rest.
Just let it go. Allow your body to let go of any resentment, blame, guilt, worries or fears that can paralyze the adrenal glands.
Learning relaxation techniques such as biofeedback, meditation guided imagery can help you cope with stress better.
Try taking a hot bath with lavender or neroli oil at night. These oils can help to calm frazzled nerves, promote a feeling of calmness and bring about a restful nights sleep.
Siberian ginseng is an adaptogenic herb that supports the adrenal glands making it a great tonic to help the body deal with stress.
Found in the rainforest of South America, the herb suma has been reported to help increase energy levels and rejuvenate the spirit. It has been found to be useful in restoring glandular function and balancing the endocrine system.
Licorice Root has traditionally been used to support the adrenals. This herb is very sweet and is not recommended if you are diabetic.
Pantothenic Acid, vitamin B5, is vital for adrenal hormone production and is recommended in supporting the adrenal glands.
Nature's Sunshine's Energy-V Capsules and Nervous Fatigue Formula are a collection of stimulating & adaptogenic herbs which can help the body adapt to stress.
DHEA is a hormone precursor produced by the adrenal glands. Leading health experts to believe that after the age of 25, the body's ability to produce DHEA declines and supplementation can help increase energy and counteract the effects of stress.
Supplements made from bovine adrenal glands provide nutritional support for proper adrenal gland function. Only use this supplement for short periods of time as to not disrupt the normal function of the adrenal glands.

Holistics?

Holistics?
 by: P. Sidney Parker

"Holistic" is the health industry's new buzzword, most often associated with Alternative medicine, the new buzz phrase. The status of the word "holistic" has made it victim to advertisers and marketers, who are attaching it to everything under the sun. They know holistic is one of those words that instantly "validates" a product or service. I remember at the height of the no fat craze, going into the supermarket and seeing pretzels packaged with No Fat boldly printed on the labels. Pretzels have always been one of the least fat filled foods you could find. "Organic" began popping up on packaging during the height of the natural foods craze. The problem was and in some ways still is, each company had its own definition of organic. And now I see the same thing happening with the word "Holistic". A consumer sees "Holistic" in the product name or description and buy it thinking the product is somehow better. When asked what "holistic" is, very few can answer correctly.
Synergistic - when parts work together for the benefit of the whole
In simplest terms holistic is the synergistic relationship of parts of a whole. So the term can be applied to any system, whether it be mechanical, electronic, a business, or health. Since I am in the health business I will speak about "holistic" in health terms. Be aware I am simplifying for the sake of time and space.
Holistic is as much a concept, as it is a practice.
Our overall wellness is determined by the state of our Spiritual (emotional) being, along with the state of our Mental being and our Physical being. If the Spirit, Mind, or Body is not well then our overall wellness is not at ease (dis-ease). In order to relieve the dis-ease of our wellness, we must receive holistic treatments. These treatments are actually a system or group of treatments that seek to affect the three elements of being, Spirit, Mind, and Body. A good example of this is (can be) aromatherapy, which through the application of essential oils effects the physical being. At the same time the aroma "can" be soothing to the soul. A good therapist will take the time to speak with the ailing person, asking pertinent questions about their health and explaining what the treatment is expected to do. A caring nature is important for any therapist to have.
Sometimes the holistic treatment can not be provided in one location or by one therapist. In that case in order for the treatment to be considered holistic, each therapist working with a client must be aware of what the other therapist(s) is/are doing. The therapies must be carried out synergistically.
Holistic, in terms of health, means taking into consideration the three elements of the being, Spirit, Mind and Body, when attempting to regain or maintain an optimal state of Well-being. Any meditation or mind set training, by itself is not holistic. Any food by itself is not holistic, any exercise by itself is not holistic.
A holistic state is only achieved when all three elements of the being are being addressed.

Your Health Is Your Yours!

Your Health Is Your Yours!
 by: P. Sidney Parker

Your health and wellness are your business and yours to manage! You are, or at least you should be, your own primary health provider!
Not only do I believe whole heartedly in these two statements, they are the basis of my philosophy of personal being. I encourage my clients to think in these terms while embracing the concepts of Alternative medicine and holistic health. No one is more affected by your health than you are! This is one of those "no brainers" that get overlooked when dealing with a complex issue. Sort of a reversal of "not being able to see the forest because the trees are in the way". In this case we can not see some of the solutions because the problems seem to be so overwhelming.
Today's society encourages us to expect instant automatic solutions to our problems. The "press this button", or "take this pill approach" to life! We have come to expect that regardless of what we "allow" to happen to ourselves, there is some wonder miracle drug that will cure it.
Part of the problem is we are no longer expected to be responsible for the consequences of our actions! Several years ago McDonald's was sued for causing people to get fat. Think about that for a moment. I consumed more calories than I burn, so I gain weight. But it is not my fault, its yours because you provided me with the food! Maybe it's just me (I don't think so), but this sounds too much like not accepting the consequence of own action. The "McDonald's made me fat" suit is just a highlighted example of what is becoming more and more prevalent in our society. I think we should get a class action suit going against the medical industry for not finding a cure for the cold or cancer. They know there's a problem but haven't given us a solution yet! Okay I admit that is a bit far fetched, but maybe not far off in the future!
The bottom line is we must take more responsibility for what happens to us. More responsibility for what goes into our bodies. Gain more understanding of what it is our bodies need. Take more notice of what our body is doing, or is not doing. Your personal physician or healthcare provider can not provide you with all of the answers. Most of the answers come from your body, learn to listen to it and understand it! Let your doctor become your health care assistant!

Mindfulness and Pain: Just Say Ouch

Mindfulness and Pain: Just Say Ouch
 by: Maya Talisman Frost

What's the best way to manage pain?
Just say ouch.
That's a simplified description of the role of mindfulness in reducing the experience of pain. The secret isn't in focusing on the painful sensation itself. No, the power is in recognizing our tendency to say way more than ouch.
Here's the basic math: Suffering = Pain + Resistance. Can mindfulness reduce the sensation of pain? Not exactly, but it can markedly reduce the total suffering we experience by illuminating--and even eliminating--our resistance.
Pain is a warning. It informs and motivates us. If you're resting your hand on a hot stovetop, it's important to feel that pain in order to remove your hand quickly and avoid burns. We need the sensation of pain to protect our bodies from further injury.
Pain also teaches us new ways to move. If you are consistently hurting your back on the weekend, your pain is letting you know that 1) you need to rest and 2) you need to learn a healthier way to work or play.
Chronic pain is more difficult. It is hard to find any redeeming value in long-term pain. We've learned our lessons already, but it persists, and there's not much that can be done about it.
Mindfulness is extremely valuable in alleviating the experience of all kinds of pain but it is especially effective for those likely to hurt on a daily basis.
We feel pain. We say ouch--mentally or verbally. Then what happens? We get wrapped up in ways to resist the pain. We start a mental dialogue about how we're going to deal with it (medication, ice, heat, rest, acupuncture, massage, magnetic therapy, etc.). Then, we get caught in thoughts and emotions: Disappointment ("Now I can't go hiking.") Worry ("I hope it's nothing serious.") Fear ("What if it gets worse?") Anger ("Why is it hurting now? I already had surgery!") Depression ("What if I have to stop playing tennis?") Excitement ("I'm going into labor!")
Our resistance stirs up a lot more tension, resulting in a much more pronounced experience of the pain. Worrying about pain really does make it worse.
This is where mindfulness comes in. By paying attention to the thoughts and emotions that accompany pain, you can learn to separate these from the sensation. Once you've done that, you can actually eliminate the tension and see the pain for what it is--and no more.
By seeing the internal dialogue that comes with pain, you can learn to handle it skillfully and reduce your suffering.
The next time you feel pain, take a moment to focus on it. Watch your thoughts and emotions as they come up. Breathe. And go back to ouch.
Simple pain never felt so good.

Exercise for a Healthy Heart

Exercise for a Healthy Heart
 by: Louise Roach

Do you exercise every day? If you want to live a long, healthy life, maybe you should.
A recent study by Timothy Wessel, a physician at the University of Florida, indicates one of the strongest risk factors for developing heart disease is inactivity – even more so than being overweight. During the four-year study of 906 women, Dr. Wessel documented those who were moderately active were less likely to develop heart disease than sedentary women, no matter how much they weighed. The study concluded: "These results suggest that fitness may be more important than overweight or obesity for cardiovascular risk in women."
In January, the updated U.S. Dietary Guidelines strongly urged that everyone should take part in "at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity" on most days, above whatever activities they do at home or work. To loose weight or to avoid gaining weight as we age, 60 minutes of daily moderate to vigorous exercise is recommended. And those who have already lost weight and are attempting to keep weight off need 60 to 90 minutes of daily exercise.
A study of 9,611 adults by the University of Michigan Health System, found that people in their 50s and 60s who participated in daily exercise were 35 percent less likely to die within the next eight years than their inactive couch potato counter parts.
Convinced that it's time to add exercise to your day?
The Basics - Making Exercise a Life Priority:
If you're not use to exercising, check with your doctor before beginning any strenuous fitness routine.
Start slow. If 30 minutes of exercise is too much, start with 15 minutes and add a few minutes each day.
If you don't have time for 60 minutes of exercise, break it up into two 30-minute sessions throughout the day.
Schedule a specific time to exercise everyday – then keep to your schedule!
Take part in more intense activities that can improve your heart health, such as: running, dancing, swimming, cycling, and climbing stairs.
Find exercise that you enjoy. You will be more likely to continue and improve your daily performance if you look forward to a favorite activity.
Wear proper clothing and footwear. This has two functions. Clothing and shoes that are suited to your activity will enhance performance and offer the right kind of support for your body and feet. They will also place you in a better frame of mind for exercise. When you wear your favorite running outfit and slide into your special running shoes, your mind says "it's time to get out the door and put my feet in motion!"
Add everyday activities to increase your overall fitness level, such as gardening, housework, walking to the store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and raking leaves.
Always drink lots of water.
If you feel discomfort or pain after an activity, use ice therapy immediately to reduce swelling and numb pain. Always have a cold pack in your freezer, ready and waiting. Most aches and pains attributed to exercise respond well to icing and will melt away within 24 hours after applying ice for several 20-minute sessions. Using cold therapy reduces down time, getting you back on schedule fast. (If the pain does not lessen within 48 hours after using ice therapy, is intense or becomes worse, see your doctor.)
Exercise every day…take care of your heart…live long!

Is the FDA really looking out for you?

Is the FDA really looking out for you?
 by: Lee Cummings

The FDA mission statement reads in part:
"The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products …, our Nations food supply …"
"The FDA is also responsible for … helping the public get the accurate, science based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health."
With that mission statement in mind, let's take a look at this tragic situation:
As reported by the Associated Press on February 14th, 2005 –
Canada has ordered the removal of a drug for ADHD – Adderall XR, Because of links to 20 sudden deaths and 12 strokes from people taking this drug. 14 of these deaths were children and 2 of the 12 strokes were children who were taking the drug.
None of these deaths or strokes took place in Canada and none of the reactions were from misuse or abuse of the drug. The reactions were from normal consumption of the drug.
Canada is also asking makers of similar drugs for treating this condition, "to provide a thorough review of their worldwide safety data."
In stark contrast to the Canadian reaction, here is the statement from the United States FDA –
"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, said it had evaluated the same reports on Adderall XR and doesn't think the data warrants similar action in the United States."
Let's get this straight – Canada has ordered the drug to be pulled off the market in their country.
And the FDA says it is alright that 2 children have suffered strokes and 14 children have died from using this drug.
Canada cares about the health of its children and does not want any deaths to happen in their country.
However, the FDA has a very different view.
This is the FDA statement posted on their website last week:
The FDA says it "does not feel that any immediate changes are warranted in the FDA labeling or approved use of this drug based upon its preliminary understanding of Health Canada's analysis of adverse event reports and FDA's own knowledge of the reports received by the agency."
When will the FDA care about America's children?
When will the FDA care about the people of America?
Let's review the FDA mission statement one more time.
"The FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products …, our Nations food supply …"
"The FDA is also responsible for … helping the public get the accurate, science based information they need to use medicines and foods to improve their health."
I'm not sure when you'll be asking yourself, "Is the FDA really looking out for my health?"

Can You Fight The Common Cold With A Natural Remedy?

Can You Fight The Common Cold With A Natural Remedy?
 by: Kevin Sheldon

Colds appear superficially similar to the 'flu, but are generally less severe. Common in the colder seasons, respiratory passage inflammation, irritation of the nose and throat, runny eyes, and of course fevers, chills and muscle aches are typical symptoms of the common cold. In extreme cases, a bad cold may even cause sinusitis or congestion of the chest, which can be particularly distressing for the very young and very old. The differences between a cold and flu are fairly easy to spot - flu usually causes a headache, fever, heavy fatigue and general aches - these are rare in true colds. On the other hand, a cold usually involves a runny nose and a sore throat - both rare in flu. Whatever you do, the symptoms will last between 7 and 14 days (including an incubation period of between 1 and 3 days). Men tend to say they have the flu, rather than a 'cold', because it sounds so much more serious! Common colds, however, are far more 'common' if you will excuse the pun.
The common cold is caused by a fast mutating virus, which tends to strike when one's immune system is depressed. Extreme coldness, tiredness, stress brought on by overwork, or overindulgence - all of these can 'bring on' a cold. The symptoms of the common cold are actually your body attempting to kill the virus and re-establish normal conditions - a raised body temperature kills the virus eventually. Unfortunately, the fast mutation characteristics of the common cold make it impossible to produce a vaccine, leaving only natural remedies in the arsenal of anti-cold techniques.
At the first signs of a cold (sore throat, runny nose) go to bed - don't wait for the virus to 'kick in'. Remember that the first line of attack against the cold virus will be plenty of fluids, and especially vitamin C drinks, such as hot lemon. In fact, you can take large amounts of vitamin C in many forms - tablets, drinks etc. Garlic will also help - both of these are good germ fighters. Other vitamins that will help include vitamin A, B6, vitamin E, and vitamin F. It is also reported that a little extra zinc can help shorten the duration of colds.
While the cold is in full swing, try drinking potato peeling broth. The peelings should be half an inch thick, boiled it for about half an hour then strained and cooled, taken twice a day. After the fever goes, a low calorie raw fruit and vegetable diet can be attempted, although you may not feel much like eating at this point. Raw juices and herb teas will also help. The best herb teas for fighting the common cold are:- Rose hips Camomile Peppermint Ginger
There are many products that help with runny noses and congestions - most are based on eucalyptus oil, and indeed, this is most helpful. Try putting a few drops in a cup of boiling water, then inhaling the vapors with a towel over your head. For a sore throat - gargling with crushed aspirin in warm water is also useful, although be careful you don't swallow it, and don't do it to frequently.
The most popular water treatments include hot mustard foot baths (to reduce sinus congestion), Epsom salt baths while drinking sweating teas, hot ginger chest compresses and salt water nasal douches to open the sinuses. Some people swear by steam inhalation (with eucalyptus, pine needles, cloves, or thyme).
And of course, you could always try prevention - stay warm, keep your immune system strong by eating sensibly and exercising regularly!
