Well, like a lot of people, winter really does me in. My hair is very static, my sky dry and of course, cold sores. I have a pretty painful cold sore a little bit inside my nose. You can see it when you look in the mirror. I take care of my skin very well, but I can't seem to find a way to get rid of this. How do you get rid of a cold sore ? Any tips and tricks would be perfect. Thank you!

I hate cold sores. I just skipped a week of school because I had one. Abreva works well, but it’s in your nose? So I have no idea. I also read that nail polish remover is absolutely amazing. The acrylic acid or whatever in it dries it out.

If you want to get rid of your cold sore , I would first of all say that you stop touching, Itching, or anything like that try putting on a scarf while you to school? Use chapstick. LOTS of it and its bound to get smaller if all fails, where a nice mask to school OR use some makeup to cover it up.

You cannot use meds on a cold sore in your mouth. It is not a cold sore you are describing, but a chancre sore. It may look like a blister or inflamed red bump. You should raise your mouth with warm salt water to help dry it out three times a day. Also make sure you are brushing your teeth and using mouth wash to avoid infection in case it pops or you bite it. Stay away from acidic foods such as fresh pineapple, tomatoes, orange juice, etc. anything that contains ascorbic acid. Time will heal it, but the salt water will help.

Do not swallow the salt water! Spit it out! Just swish and rinse your mouth with it. She is nuts. Salt water does not taste good to anyone. You don't want to swallow it. It is not good for a person to drink salt water, so why would you swallow it? It will not help you to swallow it. It will only help if you rinse your mouth with it. I don't know what that woman is thinking, and she is an RN!

This may sound real weird but my mom use to always say if you rub your finger behind your ear and then rub it on your cold sore it will go away quick.Something about the oil behind your ear kind of odd but I guess it would be worth a try.

Asthma can be a deadly disease. That's why we should be aware of and vigilant about what causes asthma attacks so that we can steer away from them. No one accurately knows exactly what causes it; but thanks to the many studies and research, distinct triggers are already identified.

The cause is said to be certain interaction of environmental and genetic factors that researchers do not fully grasp and understand up to now. Studies are ongoing and hopefully we will have more answers one day soon.

A Medical Home Vision and Some Lessons Learned from the Front Line by Matt Adamson


If you read our blog with any regularity, it has probably become readily apparent that we at MEDecision are very excited about the prospects and potential of the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH). We believe very strongly in its ability to enable better patient care at a lower cost and, over the past year, have devoted significant resources to developing technologies that will enable it to succeed. Our vision for the medical home takes into account the following considerations:

1. While some aspects of care management will remain with health plans, their role will change as that responsibility begins to shift toward the medical home team.

2. All patients are unique with individual sets of circumstances. That will require many different approaches toward the delivery of care.

3. With different approaches comes the need for care coordination to steer all of the moving parts and manage tasks according to the patient’s needs.

4. Maintaining different technical systems and organizations for managing silos of case, disease, utilization and behavioral health management will become less prevalent within the health plan. Instead, care management efforts will take a more holistic approach through technologies and teams that are centered on the patient rather than the process.

5. Health plans will expect care management platforms to support the extension of their patient-centered processes to physician practices.

6. Health plans will also look to help create and support Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) around high performing medical homes.

As these factors emerge, it will mean that, in order to be effective, care management platforms can no longer simply be payer-based or exist only within the walls of a single entity. These solutions must be re-imagined and extended so that care coordinators in the medical home and the various other team members involved in a patient’s care (including the patient) can take ownership of tasks within the overall care plan and see the results in a timely manner. This creates a virtual medical home team that can be customized or shifted to account for the diversity of patient needs. The concept of a transparent care plan could then lend transparency to reimbursement models for physicians. Enablement of the medical home is also viewed as a methodology to address issues of the looming primary care physician shortage and increase the level of trust and communication between patients, payers and providers.

To date, MEDecision has been involved in a few PCMH initiatives with its customers, including an important medical home pilot project with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma (BCBSOK). While the initiative remains in its earliest stages, we have compiled some critical intelligence points that offer health plans valuable insight when considering similar endeavors:

1. Identify the right provider practice. An effective medical home pilot requires the involvement of a provider practice large enough to generate outcome metrics that are significant and worthwhile. At least one third of the practice’s provider panel should be health plan members, and the practice itself should be a trusted partner with a genuine interest in pursuing the medical home model. It is also beneficial if the practice currently uses an electronic medical record.

2. Develop an effective reimbursement strategy. It’s important for health plans to work with the physician practice to determine the optimal mix of care coordination fees, fee-for-service, and shared savings reimbursement methodologies.

3. Consider technology as a critical component. The technology solution partner selected to help enable the PCMH should:

• Include proven analytics tools to identify gaps in care, delineate populations and support quality reporting.

• Enable the health plan’s nursing staff to drive care management processes closer to the patient through the medical home practice.

• Offer electronic medical records, such as MEDecision’s Patient Clinical Summaries, for use at the point of care.

• Improve provider communication and administrative efficiencies.

• Facilitate a medical home-centric health information exchange.

4. Devise a care management plan. Working collaboratively, medical home participants can determine the answers to a series of important questions in advance that will help smooth progress once the pilot project has been launched, such as:

• How are gaps in care being identified, and who is responsible for closure?

• How will case and disease management programs be managed? Will the health plan support the practice, or will it maintain responsibility—but with better communication?

• How can better collaboration with the pilot site be established to facilitate faster notification of referrals into programs?

5. Create legal and marketing strategies at the beginning of the process. Legal considerations should encompass changes in provider contracting and agreements on the specific responsibilities of and expectations for each participating entity. It is also beneficial to promote the medical home pilot through press releases and other appropriate marketing channels. Participants should come to an agreement beforehand on what the messaging should convey.

Medical Home a Hot Topic at AHIP Institute by Matt Adamson


On Thursday at AHIP Institute I had the pleasure of presenting a medical home case study with my colleague Elaine Olzawski, senior director of health care management at BlueCross BlueShield of Oklahoma. We were incredibly impressed with the turnout (standing room only!!) and the discussion and interaction that ensued. I think it was a clear indication of the way interest in the medical home has just exploded in recent months and a sign that the concept is and will continue to impact the future of healthcare in the United States.

My approach to the session was to provide something of an overview of the medical home model, while Elaine shared some real-life experiences from the pilot program our organizations are working on in Oklahoma. That really resonated with our attendees and prompted some interesting discussion about the differences between commercial versus government-run medical homes and the role that pharmacy plays in the execution of the concept. Elaine and I emphasized the importance of IT as the backbone of a successful medical home and how it can enable the communication, decision support, and outcomes tracking and reporting requirements necessary for success.

Interestingly, it wasn’t just at our presentation that I encountered so much interest in the medical home. There was a distinct buzz about it throughout the conference in general as healthcare organizations gear up to meet the medical home mandates in the recently passed reform law. I got the sense, however, that the concept would be just as popular on its own because of its promise for improving care and controlling costs. Either way, it’s apparent the medical home boom is already beginning and, as we at MEDecision tried to make clear at AHIP, there’s no need for organizations to wait. Those that partner with a well-positioned, forward-thinking technology provider can begin implementing the concept now and be well ahead of the game by the time the reform-driven changes take effect.

I left AHIP with a strong sense that healthcare is definitely on the verge of change and that the medical home, mandated or not, is going to be a key part of it. The coming months may be some of the most transformative healthcare has ever seen. I know I’ll be keeping a close eye on things as they unfold.

Conscious Immunity: Tapping Your Way to a Happier, Healthier YOU by Zach Miller


What comes to mind when you think about your immune system? Do you think about an army of special cells, proteins, tissues, and organs ready to go to battle to defend you from organisms and substances that invade your system and cause disease? Do you visualize little Pac-Men like creatures gobbling up all the little buggies?

How about cancer? Did just reading the word flame the fire of fear? Say these words out loud right now: "I have cancer."

How did your body react? Did your heart race? Face flush? Shoulders tense? Stomach tighten?

Though medical science has made some breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, many of us still think "DEATH" when the word is mentioned. An unfortunate fact that supports this thought is that many of us have had someone we love die of cancer. My nephew died of cancer just one month shy of his 14th birthday. It was indeed a tragic and traumatic loss for my family.

Sadly, one thing our health care system does not address adequately is the emotional factors of cancer and other dis-eases. I had one client who was in the doctors examining room, wearing nothing but a paper sheet, when she was given the diagnosis. No family in the room, feeling vulnerable and alone, with no one to physically, emotionally or spiritually support her. While driving home, reeling with thoughts of how she was going to tell her three children, she rear-ended a car at a stop light and severely injured her neck.

It just makes intuitive sense that a body experiencing fear, trauma, stress, and guilt is not in the best shape to heal anything. And though the medical community is well aware that emotional dis-ease set us up for physical dis-ease, traditional medicine does not address the emotional house as a part of the treatment plan.

Mother Teresa once said she wouldn't march on a war against anything. Nothing is cured by war. But we often speak of "fighting cancer". I truly believe a body that is at peace with itself and infuses all its cells with love has a better chance of freeing itself of any dis-ease than a body at war with itself.

Though I am not a doctor, I consider myself a healer. In my experience, it matters not what symptoms or disease the body is presenting. Be it back pain, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, low energy, chronic sinus infections, Parkinson's Disease, depression, and even cancer, the body cannot effectively heal itself until the underlying toxic emotions that are trapped in the body's subtle energy system is released. It's also important to know that these low frequency emotions are mostly driven by limiting beliefs and fears of the subconscious mind.

The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is the most effective and efficient way I have found to free these toxic emotions and reprogram the subconscious.

They code for, amongst other things, markers of our levels of immunity from disease. So unhappy people had weakened immune systems and were more susceptible to illness.в€

The book also chronicles how a patient altered the degree of clumping of her red blood cells (RBC) by using EFT. The patient's doctor examined the live red blood cells using darkfield microscopy before and after the patient used EFT. Here's what Dr. Church writes:

в€œOur dominant medical model does not believe that physiological processes such as red blood cell clumping are under the control of a patient's conscious mind. [This] usually takes months of treatment, if it can be accomplished at all. Yet in just two rounds of EFT, lasting just a few minutes, were enough to produce an immediate and visible change in the degree of cell clumping.в€ (The pictures showing the change in the RBC was nothing short of miraculous!)

I am not suggesting that EFT should replace medical care. However, the research is illuminating that our psychology plays a definitive role in our physiology, and supports the theory that bodies free of toxic emotions and energy disruptions have enhanced immune function.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common gastrointestinal disease in the United States. But as common as it is, not a lot of people know so much about the disease and those who are familiar with the disease seem to have little knowledge about it.

This presents a problem to a lot of people. They may already be suffering the symptoms yet they do not know that it could be IBS already. Or for those who already have irritable bowel syndrome, they do not know what precautions to take to avoid irritable bowel syndrome flare-ups.

For you to be able to avoid these kinds of situations, you need to know more about this condition.

IBS is a functional disorder of the GI tract or gastrointestinal tract.

When you say functional disorder, this means that there is a problem with the function of the organ but not the structure of the organ. The physical structure of the organ is perfectly normal but there is just something wrong with the way it is functioning.

The problem sometimes with IBS is that its symptoms are very general and that it is the reason why people have a tendency to take it lightly. The common symptoms of this syndrome can be abdominal pain, abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and constipation. In the early 90s, another research about this syndrome theorized that the immune system of the human body also plays a big role in the development of IBS. And recently, there are researches on this disease that try to establish that this syndrome is caused by infectious agents.

IBS flare-ups can be caused by something that you do or it could be set off with the condition you are in. These are some risk factors that could be the reasons that set off irritable bowel syndrome flare-ups.

It has, throughout the years, been believed that emotions are a strong trigger to set off IBS flare-ups. Some even believe that these emotions are also the cause of irritable bowel syndrome itself.

The wall of the intestines is lined with nerve cells that are connected to the brain. Strong emotions or stress can cause the muscle of the intestines to spasm. This can lead to either constipation or diarrhea that are two of the symptoms of it.

Another risk factor that may set off IBS flare ups is the kind of food that you eat. It has been believed that there are certain foods that can cause IBS or worsen the condition. A GI diet is one way to refer to a diet where the glycemic index is observed This type of index is a chart that numbers all of the different foods in the index with a number. Each one of the foods has a number that can give you a good idea of the type of food that you are eating and how it rates in the index. Foods that are higher than 65 in the glycemic index are considered to be high in the index. Foods that are low are better for you and should be consumed over the high indexed foods.

It can be very confusing to try to go on a GI diet without having a list of the glycemic index. You should not be under the impression that you must avoid all carbohydrates, either. While some carbohydrates are high, this is not the case with all of them. And the vitamins and minerals that are absorbed into the system are something that should not be avoided by anyone. Anyone who wants to lose weight will need to consume three hundred to five hundred less calories per day than their body burns. The amount of calories that you burn ultimately depends on your current weight and the amount of physical activity you participate in during the day. The more active you are the more calories you will burn.

For example, if you weigh 160 pounds and are not very active - in other words you spend most of the day sitting down and do very little exercise - then your body will burn just over 2100 calories a day. So, if you want to lose inches and weight you will need to cut your caloric consumption down to between 1600 and 1800 calories a day.

In order to do that you may want to have three meals of approximately 450 calories each and enjoy two snacks during the day of roughly 125 to 175 calories each. The easiest way to figure out how many calories of prepared food you are eating is to look at the labels that your food is packaged in.

Just compare the number of calories per serving with the size of each serving and take it from there.

If you prefer to make your meals from scratch you might want to try one of the following low calorie suggestions.

You can enjoy an omelet made of six scrambled egg whites, mushrooms, and low fat cheese. Accompany it with a slice of whole wheat toast and a baked apple with cinnamon and, believe it or not, you will have eaten only 321 calories.

To put things in perspective, on the other end of the spectrum is a breakfast that consists of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, a side of fries and a soda.

If this is the normal way you start your day you are putting close to 1,000 calories into your body each and every morning. That's way more than half of what your target is for the day. Eat like this and you've got to know that you're going to have a tough time taking off those unwanted extra pounds.

Because anesthetic is given, the patient, although awake during the procedure, cannot feel a thing. Patients can often find themselves back at work just a day or two after treatment. Even if you're a very out of shape senior citizen, there are simple exercises you can do that will make you feel better and enjoy your life. I know that one of the things I do for balance is walking down the rail road tracks just outside the YMCA where I do my senior exercise, along with many other seniors. I have gotten much better in the year or so that I have practiced. I do not walk them when they are wet or slippery and my kids love to join me. Remember a lot of balance receptors are in the bottom of your feet. Exercise is a key piece of the brain fitness puzzle too. Remember, this is not an olympic training that we are doing, just strenuous enough to get the breathing deep. That gets the neurogenesis and neuroplasticity going so that we have replacement parts popping online everyday. So not a sore muscle routine, but definitely regular. Daily is best.

There are a large number of conditions of the eye that can cause a person serious problems if not dealt with. In the past there was not always a lot a person could do if they had poor sight. Glasses were often given to people as their eye sight worsened but this did nothing to rectify the problem. Laser eye surgery is now available and with decreasing prices over the years, anyone and everyone can benefit from this type of surgery. Laser eye surgery is also known as laser vision correction - the vision of the eyes is corrected using lasers.

The surgery itself is extremely quick and in most cases totally painless. There may be a period of time following the surgery where the patient has to keep patches over their eyes to prevent the glare of the sun from affecting them, but otherwise there is little recovery period. For a day or two the patient is required to rest their eyes following surgery. This means avoiding television, bright sunlight or reading. Sometimes people are back at work just a day or two later.

The two most common types of surgery are Lasik surgery and Lasek surgery. Lasik is often used for conditions that aren't very serious. Examples of non-serious conditions are Pterygium where a small amount of tissue grows over the surface of the cornea, or Blepharospasm which is the involuntary twitching of the eye. Neither of these conditions threaten a person's eyesight, however they can both be rectified with laser surgery. Lasek surgery is more often used for the more serious eye problems and on people who have corneas too thin for Lasik surgery. Both surgeries involve the reshaping of the cornea to correct any problems with sight.

Before the surgery starts an anesthetic is given to the patient in the form of an eye drop. Although the patient is awake throughout the procedure they cannot feel any pain. An anti-biotic is also given to ensure the eye or eyes don't become infected post-surgery. Regular checks are made following the surgery by the eye doctor to check on healing and ensure the surgery was successful too. There is nothing a patient has to do before surgery. It may be a requirement that food and drink are avoided for a number of hours before the surgery but this will depend on what is being done and where it is being carried out.

There are a range of problems and afflictions that can cause blindness. Without laser vision correction the unavoidable result will be losing your sight altogether however laser surgery now means it can't go that far. Cataracts are often present in the eyes of the elderly. These occur when the lens of the eye becomes hard and slightly cloudy. With laser surgery the damaged lens can be replaced with a new, artificial one and instantly the sight is back to normal. Glaucoma is another common condition that can be treated successfully with laser surgery. Other serious conditions that can be rectified are wet and dry age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. There are plenty of less serious but equally frustrating conditions that can be fixed including myopia which is short sightedness and dry eye syndrome which is when the tear duct of the eye doesn't work correctly.
