How Does Propecia (Finasteride) Help In The Treatment Of Hair Loss?

How Does Propecia (Finasteride) Help In The Treatment Of Hair Loss?
 by: Richard Mitchell

Finasteride was initially marketed to treat prostate conditions under the name Proscar in 5mg pills. It was known to inhibit the formation of DHT, a major contributor to both prostate cancer and male pattern hair loss.
Subsequent research showed that a 1mg daily dose of the same drug was sufficient to control hair loss for 83% of men after two years of treatment. Since 1998 this version has been marketed under the brand name Propecia and it remains the only prescription drug approved by the FDA specifically to treat hair loss. This approval extends only to men's hair loss because of the dangers finasteride presents to unborn male fetuses. Women of child bearing age should therefore consult with their physician before considering the use of this drug.
The main purpose of Propecia is to halt hair loss and maintain what hair coverage is left. It is therefore popular with younger men who want to control hair loss at an early stage. Men of all ages use it in combination with minoxidil to achieve a hair loss strategy that both halts hair loss and encourages new growth.
Propecia works by interfering with the process of androgenetic hair loss which usually follows this process:
High levels of an enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase occur in cells of the hair follicle.
This enzyme converts testosterone into DHT.
DHT causes miniaturization of robust terminal hairs.
This results in fine, soft vellus hairs that provide limited scalp coverage.
The growth phase gradually shortens until these hairs are lost permanently.
Propecia inhibits the formation of DHT and over a period of several months reduces levels of DHT sufficiently to minimize its effects on the hair follicle.
As with any drug, finasteride can cause side effects to a minority of users. The FDA trials reported a 2% incidence of varying side effects but these tended to lessen as the body adjusted to the drug over a period of months. Although Propecia or cheaper generic versions are easily obtained on the internet it is strongly recommended that you seek the advice of your doctor, at least in the first instance.

Do Natural Hair Loss Remedies Have Any Real Relevance?

Do Natural Hair Loss Remedies Have Any Real Relevance?
 by: Richard Mitchell

The effectiveness of modern hair loss treatments is clear for all to see, but many people simply prefer not to use strong chemicals or non-natural substances.
If you fall into this category, does this mean you'll just have to accept an ever-decreasing head of hair? The answer to this is an unequivocal NO!
Many natural hair loss remedies, both traditional and contemporary, have shown their worth in reducing and reversing hair loss. They are also perceived as being free from side effects and even deliver additional health benefits.
Why then, don't we hear a lot more about these natural hair loss remedies? Simply because claims of cures cannot be made without FDA approval, and obtaining the FDA seal of approval involves lengthy and expensive scientific research that only major companies can afford. Even the biggest companies could not recoup the costs of such a process as no-one can control the rights to common natural substances such as basic foods and vitamins.
The big question however is, do natural hair loss remedies work? Firstly, hair growth at root level is a living part of the body that depends on sound nutrition, just like any other part of the body. The importance of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional elements in maintaining healthy hair cannot be disputed.
Secondly, the role of herbs and plants in treating numerous ailments is receiving increased recognition after years of neglect, and hair loss is no exception. Many herbal remedies for both internal and external use are offering new hope to people suffering from premature hair loss.
Thirdly, traditional hair loss remedies may still have something to offer. Ancient literature and folklore reveal that our ancestors went to great lengths to treat thinning hair. Some of the more acceptable traditional approaches are now being incorporated into many potential treatment regimes.
Other articles in this series tackle each of these areas in much more detail but you can find out more now by visiting the site listed below.

Until You've Walked the Path!

Until You've Walked the Path!
 by: Paul Shearstone

From the depths of despair to the heights of hope. That is the inspiring journey traveled by author Paul Shearstone in his new book Until You've Walked The Path.
Shearstone, a successful businessman, author and international keynote speaker, fought desperately to find balance and understanding as his life collapsed around him in the early '90s. Stricken suddenly with a mysterious ailment known then as the Yuppie Flu, Shearstone battled to keep him and his family functioning even as he endured the physical pain and depression of an illness that has since been diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome [CFIDS].
In the end, it was Shearstone's enduring optimism and strikingly positive attitude that helped him and his family, overcome the debilitating disease. Shearstone has written this book in hope that other sufferers or caregivers will benefit from his experiences.
Recent AMA and CMA studies purport, one in four North Americans are suffering from some form of chronic fatigue or depression. Many will never be properly diagnosed and sadly, many of them will never recover.
Until You've Walked The Path is a no-nonsense, real-life account of one man's recovery from an insidious disease. It is also a courageous book, a very personal tale of suffering, despair and, ultimately, enlightenment. This book, by Paul Shearstone, stands as a beacon of hope, lighting the path to recovery, triumph and happiness.

Is Citrus Aurantium really bad for your health?

Is Citrus Aurantium really bad for your health?
 by: Lee Cummings

Once again the "wisdom" of the FDA and the supplement hating Academia and the out of control trial lawyers - have gotten it wrong. And are doing everything they can to take away your right to take control of your own health.
Here's the problem –
They are brewing up several false angles to make you believe that Citrus Aurantium is somehow dangerous to your health.
Really? Are you aware that the Chinese have only been using this safely to improve their digestive health for over 2000 years?
The Chinese and other Asian cultures have used this safe, natural Herb for over 2000 years for good digestive health.
I am talking about the safe, natural herb Citrus Aurantium.
Let's give the Chinese people credit where credit is due. Do you really think they would be using this safe, natural herb for over 2000 years if it was not good for their health?
Nothing which is bad for your health gets used for very long.
This absolute arrogance on the part of the FDA, academia and trial lawyers which is costing you your health and your freedom.
Anyone can look up the fully documented facts about this herb and how it has been used for thousands of years.
The following story and I do mean story, as in this is not fact, has been run all over the media, the internet "news" sites and supposed "health watch" type sites which proclaim to be watching out for your health while pushing dangerous prescription drugs.
http://gumc.georgetown.edu/communications/releases/release.cfm?ObjectID=3341
This article contains absolutely no scientific proof.
Where are the lawyers as people are now dying and suffering? Adverse health effects from prescription drugs? Will the pharmaceutical companies ever be held accountable for? the deaths and the adverse health consequences they and the doctors who prescribe these drugs cause?
Here is a more accurate article on this health giving herb.
http://www.foodqualitynews.com/news/news-NG.asp?id=54469
Where are all the stories and hand wringing over the adverse effects on your health from dangerous prescription drugs?
Fact: Each year there are currently over 100,000 deaths which are caused By properly prescribed drugs of all types in hospitals.-1
Here is the next myth widely distributed in the media –
That some foods have adverse reactions with drugs.
Food interacting badly with drugs?
Wrong, drugs interact with grapefruit juice and other safe, natural healthy foods.
Once again the media have it backwards.
Drugs are not a normal part of a person's diet.
They would have you believe that you should not eat healthy grapefruit and should instead ingest their liver and kidney killing drugs which inhibit your body in its ability to absorb the nutrition in your food.
Fact: unwanted interactions between supplements and drugs were not serious In 94 percent of the cases -2.
Never mind that drugs interacting with other drugs are proven to be dangerous and deadly to people.
One only has to look at the recent recall of the arthritis and Acute pain drug Vioxx™ as yet another example of the real health danger to consumers.
This drug has proven to cause an increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Read on …
http://www.thewbalchannel.com/health/3772349/detail.html
Where are the articles warning you of this?
Are you going to avoid safe, natural, healthy foods and load up on drugs?
Your health is in your hands. It is your right to believe the drug companies, lawyers and self proclaimed academics with no scientific proof.
Where are their thousands of years of providing real healthy solutions to real health problems?
What they offer are decades of harming your health. Guaranteed. Just listen to or read their list of side effects. You know them well don't you.
Will you stand up for your freedom and write your Senators and Congressmen?
Or will you sit idly by as your freedoms are taken away one by One and you no longer have a choice to control your own health.
What is next? Will they decide to ban food because it contains many of these same nutrients?
Demand accountability from the FDA, urge your legislators to uphold your freedoms and stop the banning of supplements, Vitamins, minerals and herbs which have a track record proven to be safe for thousands of years.

How Would YOU React To Tragedy Like This?

How Would YOU React To Tragedy Like This?
 by: Kevin Thompson

The true story I'm about to share will have a profound impact on you, just as it did on me.
One day a mother was in her kitchen doing the dishes, when through the window, out of the corner of her eye, she saw an alligator moving across the lake behind the family's Florida home.
Knowing that her son was swimming in the lake, she immediately went racing to the back yard, yelling for him.
She ran through the back yard toward the lake, waving her hands in the air, screaming at the top of her lungs for her son.
The young boy, while startled, knew that something was wrong and began swimming toward the dock.
Meanwhile, the alligator was moving across the lake at a very fast pace and was just a few feet away from the boy.
Just as the mother got to the end of the dock and began reaching for her son, the alligator grabbed hold of his legs.
The fight that ensued was vicious.
Mom had a hold of her son's arms and was trying to pull him out of the water. Meanwhile the alligator wasn't about to release his grip on the boy's legs.
Knowing that her son was going to face certain death if she didn't get him out of the water, the mother gave every ounce of energy she had and tore her son away from the alligator.
As you can imagine, the young boy's legs were in bad shape. He needed medical attention, and fast!
Mom dialed 911 and frantically told the dispatcher what had happened.
Help arrived for the badly injured boy, but as you can imagine, his fight was far from over.
He underwent major surgery to repair the damage that was done to his legs.
While it was a painful and agonizing time for the boy, after many hours of surgery, the doctors were able to save his legs.
It would takes months of recovery, but the boy would be able to walk again. The bad news was that he'd be left with permanent scarring that would be a constant reminder of the tragic event.
After hearing of the boy's amazing recovery, a local reporter went to the hospital to interview the child.
The reporter was deeply moved by the young boy's story, and just before he was about to leave, he asked if he could see the scars on his legs.
The young boy then pulled back the blanket to reveal the massive scarring to the reporter.
After seeing his seriously damaged legs, the reporter broke down in tears.
The boy then said, "Those are nothing, you wanna see my other scars?"
"Other scars?", the reporter inquired, "What other scars?"
The boy then lifted the sleeves of his hospital gown to reveal the large black and blue bruises that covered both of his upper arms.
The reporter was amazed and asked, "Where did you get those bruises?"
"These are from my mom", he said with pride as a huge smile came across his face.
= = =
Wow!
I told you this story was going to move you.
It sure does make you think, doesn't it.
I don't even have a child of my own yet, but since being with Lisa I've formed an incredible bond with her four children, and I can tell you this…
I'd do anything for those kids.
I know you feel the same way about your children.
You know, it's funny. A lot of changes have been going on in my life over the last year. But one of the biggest changes for me was when I made the decision to consciously carry an attitude of gratefulness each and every day.
What a difference it's made.
Since making these changes in my life, amazing things have been happening.
And the thing is, I want the same for you!
As I continue to share with you in the coming weeks and month's, I look forward to letting you in on many of the secrets I've learned.
And when I do, your life is going to improve as well.
What would you like?
Better health.
A better job.
More time freedom.
More money.
I can show you how to get it, and I will.

One Woman.s Story of How Her Smile Increased Her Confidence

One Woman's Story of How Her Smile Increased Her Confidence
 by: Kathleen Gage

For one who takes pride in being involved with different community organizations, possessing a high level of confidence is essential. Especially when that involvement includes speaking to large and small groups requesting donations for numerous non-profit organizations.
Such is the case with Teresa Bock, Assistant Vice President of Wells Fargo Bank's Olympus Hills Office in Salt Lake City. Not only is confidence a key to her success with all the community work she does, it is vital in her professional position.
When one first meets Teresa, they encounter a woman who is constantly smiling. This wasn't always the case. Before marrying media personality Tom Bock, Teresa overcame numerous obstacles in her life.
At age seven, Teresa became completely deaf in her right ear due to Scarlet Fever. During that same period she lost most of the hearing in her left ear. Teresa has so beautifully conquered the command of her ability to communicate, most people would have no idea she is a master lip reader unless she tells them.
Another obstacle Teresa overcame was her struggle to make ends meet with two small children from a previous marriage. With food and shelter as a priority there were many things that were put on the back burner until they became absolutely necessary. Things like visits to a dentist. During those trying times dental visits were strictly for emergency and maintenance purposes. Although Teresa secretly desired a smile that would turn heads, with the incredible financial pressures that come with being a single mom, she wondered if obtaining a beautiful smile would ever be within reach.
With a strong drive to succeed, Teresa began her career in banking in 1987 as a teller. Taking on her career challenges with the same zest that she took on her physical challenges, Teresa found opportunities to move up in the banking industry as well as continue her involvement with non-profit organizations. During her employment, she learned that Wells Fargo has an ongoing commitment to giving back to the community. Seeing an opportunity to develop a career and contribute to her community, Teresa knew she had found a great match for her life's passions.
It was during this time she met Tom Bock. What started out as two single parents enjoying each other's company blossomed into love and marriage. In 2000, they married, bringing together a combined family of five children eight grandchildren. A strong tie for their marriage is love and respect for their individual interests and the fact both Tom and Teresa are actively involved in giving back to the community.
Not being one to settle for giving her energy to one organization, Teresa has been involved with Ballet West, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, Living Planet Aquarium, Audiologist Association, NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) and various Chamber of Commerce organizations. She is absolutely convinced that being able to communicate both in one-on-one and public situations is critical to achieving the greatest outcome when it relates to raising money for an organization.
Not one to let go of her dreams, Teresa was also convinced that an improved smile would directly impact her confidence level. Although she had the desire to have her smile cosmetically improved, the cost was still a huge consideration.
What first sparked Teresa's interest in a smile makeover were pictures of people who didn't have obvious black lines near their gum lines. She also had a distinct taste of aluminum in her mouth. Having been to countless dentists over the years not one of them ever took time to explain what this was about. That is until she was introduced to Dr. Scott Kiser.
Teresa was referred to Dr. Kiser by a friend. She was so confident in his recommendations she didn't bother with a second opinion even though he recommended she do so. She knew he was fair and would do the right thing.
When Teresa decided to invest in her smile makeover, Dr. Kiser showed her how to make it possible. He helped her to figure out the best way to move forward and help her fulfill her dream. Not only did Dr. Kiser address all of Teresa's questions and concerns about her dental care, he showed her that with a good plan, her dream of a beautiful smile was well within reach.
As with many accomplishments in Teresa's life, she had to develop a plan of action to determine how to afford what she wanted. One of the first things she did was to prioritize. First, she determined where she could cut spending. Secondly, she participated in the Wells Fargo Healthcare Spending Account. The program allows for having a portion of one's paycheck put aside for various healthcare costs. Depending on the program, the monies can be used for vision, medical and/or dental fees. These programs allow you to set aside a specific pretax dollar amount to be used for unreimbursed healthcare expenses. Many employers now offer healthcare spending programs in their employee benefit packages.
"If someone thinks they can't afford it they need to ask themselves if they really can afford not to do it. It can change someone's life in ways they never dreamed possible," beams Teresa. "There are always ways to figure out how to afford something if it becomes a great enough priority."
Teresa will be the first to tell you that once she made the decision to move forward, things seemed to magically fall into place. She will also tell anyone who wants to know that her Smile Makeover is one of the best investments she ever made.
As she suspected, once she had an improved smile, her confidence rose incredibly. She found she was more willing to smile when talking to people and any insecurity she had about what people thought of her smile completely disappeared. She also found her confidence when speaking to groups greatly increased.
Teresa has been so pleased with her results she always refers people to Dr. Kiser. Many of Teresa and Tom Bock's friends are patients of Dr. Kiser.
Although she didn't always realize the importance of a great dental care provider, today she will be the first to admit you have to find someone you can trust. Someone who really cares about their patients and won't rush through an appointment.
"When I visit Dr. Kiser I feel like I am the only person that matters. And when it comes to my dental care, that's the way it should be. I didn't always believe that but today I know I deserve that kind of treatment."
Teresa also appreciates the commitment and care of the Smiles Dentistry staff. Teresa knows their staff is the best around. With state of the art equipment and dйcor that is extremely pleasing, she knows the investment Dr. Kiser has made to create an atmosphere that will be appreciated by even the most discriminating tastes.
"They really care about each patient. The first encounter one has is with Vicki. Whether they meet Vicki over the phone or in the front office, it is an incredibly positive experience. Complimented by Vicki's "can do" attitude is an overall atmosphere that is beyond compare."
"There are people in my life who never knew me before I had my smile makeover. Shock is often the response I get when they look at before and after pictures. Just to see their reaction makes me realize how great an investment Dr. Kiser's work has been. Without a doubt, it is one of the best investments I have ever made. I will reap the benefits for years to come. It is such a great feeling when someone will comment on what a beautiful smile I have. I cannot begin to tell you what it has done to improve the quality of my life."
"To Dr. Kiser and his entire team, I thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Global Dumbing?

Global Dumbing?
 by: Gary Whittaker

I am beginning to wonder if scientists have been getting it all wrong. All this time, people have been worried about the Ozone, or a giant asteroid, or some breakout of a bio-hazardous agent by a terrorist organization being the doom of mankind. We have spent all this time looking outward instead of inward towards ourselves.
The latest studies have identified two startling facts: 1 - that the whole in the Ozone layer is getter smaller, and 2 – that the brightness levels on the earth our getting dimmer. Does this all mean that Global Warming is all just a sham? Does it mean that the corporations who continue to abuse our earth with reckless abandon have been right all along? That tree-hugging hippies have had their brains melted from too much LSD?
Scientists seem to be getting dumber in direct proportion to the grants given to them by governments, which are lobbied. of course, by corporate interests. They have looked at the new Global Dimming phenomenon and said, "It can't be getting warming with less sunlight!" And no doubt that as this new story makes it rounds about the Ozone getting smaller, they will point to the great job done by their benefactors at reducing Green House emissions and say that the Ozone must be replenishing itself.
Statements like those should be judged as criminal, just as tobacco companies should be held accountable for the deaths of all their consumers. The population must be made aware of the truth behind their corporate agenda. We, the working class, are the ones that can control our future, and dictate to those Ozone depleting companies our new terms. We demand clean air. We demand that pollutants stop being poured into our waters. We demand our forests not be cut down faster than we can replant. We demand alternate, safer energy sources to heat our homes, and power our vehicles. We demand all this because our Earth is dying before our own eyes.
The whole in the Ozone layer has gotten smaller, but at the cost of thinner protection worldwide. We are not just talking about a gap over Antarctica. We are talking about more harmful radiation being let in on a yearly, monthly, daily basis. We used to be able to send out our children to play outside all day. No one needed any sunscreen with special UV protection. Now, one has to only go outside for 20 minutes before feeling the sting of the sun, while sunscreen industry has become big business. No one will react until research tells us 15 to 30 years from now that cancer has reach epidemic proportions. The warning signs are there already, we are just choosing not to listen.
Global Dimming is the best example yet. Scientists have started to look at how it has become increasing dimmer on the planet. Sunlight is not getting through as it once used to. It is only normal to think that whatever is keeping the sunlight out, must be keeping the heat in. And whatever is keeping the sunlight out is not necessarily providing us with a layer of protection. More likely, it is beginning to coat our planet with more harmful cancer causing radiation.
While I do not profess to hold a degree in science, I do profess to hold common sense. All science has done is identify several situations, but has done nothing to confirm how we got there, and what we need to do to get back to where we were. My belief is that there may be too much corporate interference for any decisive action to be taken. And for the companies who will continue to pollute our environment, that is equal to victory. The worst thing that we can do as a population, is to add Global Dumbing to the list. Get smart, take action. You may not be able to make a difference individually, but together, you can effect change. We may always live in a world that separates the rich from the poor, but that does not mean that we have to accept how those in power secure their wealth. Take public transit Buy hybrid cars. Create the market and force companies to move away from their alliances with Oil Companies, and forge new ones with alternate energy sources. Get more active, in physically, with your family, and in your community Read labels and ask questions Write to your representative
We have the power as consumers to change our purchasing habits. Force companies to hear our plea by talking the only language they understand: net profit. If we take away their profits, they will hear us in volume!

Holistic Is Not A Four-Lettered Word

Holistic Is Not A Four-Lettered Word
 by: Edgar Cisneros

If you*re anything like me, then you*ve got a certain picture in your mind of what *holistic* is supposed to be. For me, it*s conjured up pictures of holy men, or shaman, doing a ritual dance while chanting mantras, and rubbing *energy crystals* in an effort to remove evil spirits from your life. It wasn*t until I started doing research for my new book, *5 Keys To Health: A Holistic Approach* when I realized that my preconceptions couldn*t have been more further from the truth.
I had originally planned to write a book on fitness. I know that*s a pretty general term, but I intended it to be about how one can achieve health through physical fitness. It wasn*t going to be anything fancy. It was going to be a guide for the busy person, and how they can get fit, and stay that way while still being able to live a busy lifestyle.
I've always been interested in health and fitness. As a matter of fact, I think I'm in pretty good shape. I work out with weights at least 3 days per week, and I engage in some sort of cardio- vascular activity at least 2 days per week. I eat right; I stretch after every work out. I don't smoke or drink excessively. I thought I was doing pretty well.
That is, until through the course of my research I came to realize that there's a lot more to being healthy than being physically fit, and eating right. That's when I ran into the word *holistic.* In the past, it's always had a negative connotation for me. I've always thought of it as something used by metaphysical crackpots trying to sell snake-oil. As it turns out, holistic is not what I thought it was.
The real meaning of holistic is looking at the whole system rather than just concentrating on individual components. So, when it comes to being healthy, it looks at every aspect of health instead of just the physical. Do you realize that when we consider health, we usually look to see if our diet is right, or how often we exercise? There's so much more to consider.
I found out that there are several aspects you must work on in order to consider yourself truly healthy. Among them are the obvious physical, but there's also the mental and the spiritual to consider. If any of these is deficient, it could have serious repercussions in your life.
Ask yourself this, *Am I really healthy?*
Yes, you work out religiously. Yes, you eat chicken breasts, and egg whites, and you take your vitamins, and do everything else a *healthy* person is supposed to. But is there anything you're missing?
Let me ask you this: how often do work on relieving stress from your life? How often do you work on building positive relationships? How often do you seek to build spirituality in your life?
These are just some of the aspects you must work on if you're searching for true, and total health. Holistic doesn't have to have a negative meaning. It can simply mean a philosophy of well- being that considers the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life as being closely interconnected and balanced. I cover all of these points, and several more in my book, *5 Keys To Health: A Holistic Approach.*
I show you how to apply the holistic approach to health without any of the metaphysical mumbo jumbo. You can check it out at http://5keystohealth.com .
Take it from me, a one-time skeptic. *Holistic* doesn't have to be a four-lettered word. It can be something positive that will help you create a fuller, healthier life.
