Weight Loss Surgery: Benefits and Risks

Weight Loss Surgery: Benefits and Risks
 by: Jay Romano

You may be considering weight loss surgery if you are overweight or obese. For many people, surgical weight reduction is one of the only viable ways to lose a significant amount of weight and enjoy better health. However, it's important to realize that this is a very serious undertaking. You should definitely spend time researching the topic and, if possible, talking with people who have already had a weight reduction procedure performed. Understanding the benefits and risks involved with weight loss surgery is absolutely vital to making an informed decision. To help you get started, here is a brief guide...
Benefits:
Fast Weight Loss: Obviously this is the biggest benefit of weight loss surgery. Immediately following the surgery most people begin to lose weight quickly. This rapid weight loss usually continues for at least a year and a half, leading to a very significant reduction in body weight. It's important to note however that many people begin to regain weight within 2 years, especially if they have not made any healthy lifestyle/diet changes!
Improvement of Obesity-Related Health Conditions: For many people, the improvement in their overall health, following weight loss surgery, is just as important as the weight loss itself. And for good reason: people who have suffered from debilitating obesity-related conditions (such as diabetes) for years often experience tremendous improvements within a short period of time.
Risk and Side-Effects:
Death: A small percentage of weight loss surgery patients die during the operation or from complications in the days and weeks following the surgery.
Post-surgery complications: Some patients must have follow-up procedures to correct complications, which can include infections and hernias.
Nutritional deficiencies: Some types of weight loss surgeries reduce the body's ability to absorb important vitamins and minerals. Many patients must take diet supplements on a daily basis or risk developing anemia, osteoporosis, metabolic bone disease, etc.
Gallstones: More than a third of gastric surgery patients develop gallstones due to the rapid weight loss that occurs in the months following a weight reduction procedure.
Side-effects: Some of the most common side-effects experienced by weight loss surgery patients include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, excessive sweating, increased gas, and dizziness.
As you can see, weight loss surgery carries some huge benefits along with some very significant risks. If you are severely obese, it is definitely an option for reducing your body weight and improving - or even eliminating - many of your obesity-related health conditions. Just understand the risk and be prepared to make some relatively extensive lifestyle changes after the procedure. If you are not severely obese you should definitely consider diet and exercise options before you think about weight loss surgery.

Workstation Health and Fitness for RSI

Workstation Health and Fitness for RSI
 by: Gerard Bulger

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is now a major industrial disease affecting millions of people around the world. RSI includes conditions such as carpel tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis and tendinitis - often collectively referred to as upper limb disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, occupational overuse syndrome (OOS), computer related injuries or cumulative trauma disorders, or CTD. Often the posotion of workstations and the design of the pc and accessories can affect how our health and safety.
1. Workstation Ergonomics
A well designed workstation is essential to maintaining good posture and reducing the risk of lower back pain and other computer related injuries.
2. Ergonomic Keyboards and Mice
There are quite a few ergonomically designed keyboards and mice available. The Microsoft Natural Keyboard is one example. This keyboard splits the keys into two panels - one for each hand, and angles each panel so that the hands sit naturally on the keyboard, rather than requiring them to be twisted into an unnatural position which is the case with normal keyboards. Many mice are now designed to fit neatly into either hand, and can often have a scrolling wheel, which can make scrolling through documents easier and less stressful than using scroll bars.
These ergonomic devices are generally more expensive than standard designs, but can be well worth the investment.
3. Ergonomic Use of Keyboards and Mice
The computer mouse was originally designed to make using a computer easier - it is much easier to point at a picture and click than to learn a relatively complicated series of keystrokes. However, research has shown that using a mouse is a significant cause of repetitive strain injury. Especially if the mouse is located at the same level and to the side of the keyboard - it's usual location. This requires extending your arm which introduces significant tensions and stresses in your arm, shoulder and neck.
The best position for your mouse is on a raised platform slightly above the numeric keypad on your computer. Also, if you reduce the speed of the mouse and the number of clicks you have to make you can greatly reduce the muscle tension in your arm and hand. Additionally, you can swap the primary and secondary mouse buttons (the left and right buttons), to change the mouse from being right handed to left handed. Using your left hand - or right hand if you are left handed - can take some getting used to, but can be very helpful if you are suffering from any aches and pains in one hand. Regularly alternating between left and right hands can also give your arms and hands a rest, thus minimizing the risk of developing any RSI condition. You can swap the mouse buttons using the Mouse applet in the Windows Control Panel - or directly from the Stress Buster context menu - with fewer mouse clicks and/or key strokes.
To reduce the mouse speed, open the Mouse applet in the Windows Control Panel, select the tab Pointer Options and move the pointer speed slider to the left to slow. Click OK.
To reduce the number of clicks you have to make, open the My Computer icon, then select Tools, Folder Options, and then under Click Items As Follows, choose Single-click to open an item.
If you can you should avoid using the mouse as much as possible. Most actions and commands can be carried out using keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse. For example, to reduce the number of clicks you have to make with your mouse - as described above, you could use the following keyboard shortcuts:
Press the button on your keyboard to open the Windows Start Menu.
Use the arrow keys to select My Computer (or the alternative name you may have given to your computer), and then press Enter or Return. This will open an explorer window for your computer.
Hold down the Alt key and press "T" to open the Tools menu, then press "O" to open Folder Options.
In Folder Options, hold down the Alt key, and press "S". This will select the option Single-click to open an item.
Press Enter or Return to close the Folder Options dialog.
Windows Help provides extensive help on using keyboard shortcuts with Windows. Individual applications such as Microsoft Office also have their own keyboard shortcuts - with the appropriate help. Learning keyboard shortcuts can take some time, but once learnt, using them tends to be faster than using the mouse, and avoids much of the discomfort associated with the mouse.
4. Rest Breaks
All ergonomic experts agree that taking frequent rest breaks is essential to avoid the risk of computer related injuries.
You should take frequent "eye breaks" - staring at a computer monitor for long periods causes you to blink less often - resulting in dryer eyes. Every 10 to 15 minutes you should look away from your monitor and blink your eyes rapidly for a few seconds. This will refresh the tear film and clear any dust from the surface of the eyes. Additionally you should focus on something at a distance - preferably 20 feet or more away - look out of the window if you can - this will relax the muscles inside the eye.
You should take frequent short pauses or "micro pauses" - for 10 seconds or so up to a minute - every 10 minutes or thereabouts. You should take regular short breaks - for 5 minutes or more - every hour or so - maybe go for a coffee or a short walk around the office, and you should take a long break every two or three hours - for at least 15 minutes, or preferably 30 minutes to an hour. Exactly how long and how frequent your breaks are depends on your own personal preferences and working environment.
5. Stretching Exercises
Regular stretching is an essential part of RSI prevention and recovery, remember that your body is not designed to be sat at a desk for 8 hours a day clicking a mouse. Respect your body and give it the movement and range of motion it normally expects.
6. Posture
Good posture is essential to avoid repetitive strain injury and other computer related injuries. Well designed workstation ergonomics can help in maintaining a good posture.
Make sure that you can reach the keyboard with your wrists as flat as possible (not twisted up or down) and straight (not twisted left or right). An ergonomic keyboard can help to keep your wrists straight.
Make sure that your elbow angle is 90 degrees or more to avoid nerve compression at the elbow.
Make sure that your upper arm and elbow are as close to the body and as relaxed as possible for mouse use - avoid overreaching. Also make sure that your wrist is as straight as possible when the mouse is being used.
Make sure that you sit back in the chair and that you have good back support - especially lumber support.
Make sure that your feet are flat on the floor. Use a foot rest if necessary.
Make sure that your head and neck are as straight as possible .
Make sure that you are relaxed. Forcing yourself to sit up straight can sometimes introduce unhealthy tensions in the back muscles.
7. Alternative Input Devices
There are a number of alternative input devices you can use, instead of the mouse and keyboard, which you might find helpful. Examples are the trackball, a graphics table and pen, a touchpad, and even voice control.
RSI is a very serious health risk, especially with the young people who are coming to any industry sector that has continuous use of a PC. You need to take all the actions and preventions necessary to help minimize that risk.

The Strife of Gym Life

The Strife of Gym Life
 by: Ed Williams

Each season has its own rites of passage, and winter is no different than spring, summer, or fall in that regard. With spring, we have the blooming of flowers and warmer weather. With summer, we have vacations, cook-outs, and baseball. Fall brings us football and Halloween. And the winter - well, the winter, specifically the wintertime right after the first of the year brings its own special rite of passage - hordes of new people joining health clubs and gyms.
I'm seeing it happen right here in Macon. I'm a member of the Wellness Center, and I walked in there early this past week, ready for yet another workout. I knew something was amiss when I first pulled up and noticed that there was not an empty parking space in the whole Wellness Center lot - I drove around and found nothing, until I lucked out and saw a true blue haired lady get into her car and drive off. I whipped on into her parking space faster than Britney got married, and then went on into the main building.
Once inside, I sauntered over to an elliptical track machine that I've faithfully worked out on for the past year. Occupying it was a young woman clad in bright pink leotards who was sipping on a bottle of Gatorade. That's nothing out of the ordinary, but it just so happened that she wasn't working out at all, but instead was jaw jacking with two of her friends who were standing right next to the machine. Seeing that I might qualify for Medicare before their conversation ended, I decided to go over to another elliptical track machine in order to begin my work out.
The second machine was thankfully empty, so I got on it and started chugging out my minutes. Since I usually work out on it for an hour, I had lots of time to scope out the room. There were people all over the place - in one corner I witnessed a couple of middle aged guys trying to chat up a young woman that was young enough to be their daughter, and in another four women blocked off a bathroom door while pointing at various people working out on the machines. I was getting a tad teed off, as it makes me mad to be up there working like a yard mule and then watch people who do nothing but gab. In a few seconds I went from being teed off to being amazed as I watched yet another person, this one a guy on an exercise bicycle - he was huge, in fact, his heiny was so big that it literally swallowed up the entire bicycle seat, so much so that it looked the seat was growing out of his rear end. I swung my eyes around elsewhere, and then finished up my workout on the bike.
Next, I usually do arm stuff, which normally doesn't take much time. And it shouldn't have this time, except for the fact that the whole place was littered with "sitters." "Sitters" are people who dress up for the gym, and then spend their entire time sitting on the various machines. They don't do anything from an exercise standpoint, they just sit around for pretty lengthy periods of time. To be honest, it boils my soul like a peanut to need to get on a machine and find that it is occupied by a "sitter." On this particular day, I worked up the nerve to go up to this guy who'd had his heiny married to my machine for a good twenty minutes. He was clad in a brand new florescent orange jogging suit, so I walked up and politely asked, "Lookin' or liftin'?" Then, before he could answer, I told him that I was writing an article on people who come to gyms not to work out, but to ogle pretty women. Amazingly, he got on up off my machine and left. Go figure.
In the end, the one good thing about seasonal rites of passage is that they have their time and place, and then they go away. Such is the case with these new exercise buffs, as most of them will soon decide that relaxing on their sofas is decidedly preferable to slogging it out on a treadmill. As a result, the gym will slowly thin out and return to normal. When that happens, I can return to my normal work out routine, which consists of quietly cussing out people who are exercising harder than I am, and also appreciating the fact that there are no more canary yellow sweat suits with Tweety Bird logos on them in the building...

Dandelions! This Common Weed is a Wonderful Spring Tonic

Dandelions! This Common Weed is a Wonderful Spring Tonic
 by: Cori Young

Those Glorious Dandelions!
Dandelions Taraxacum officinale (composite family)
Spring is coming! Starting about this time every year I find myself craving bitter flavors. My body is longing to cleanse itself of toxins accumulated over a long winter of holiday indulgence, rich foods and various colds & flus. I am aware of an overall stagnation of energy in the digestion, kidneys and liver.
I am always so amazed at how much better I feel when I start using dandelion in the spring! All that stagnated liver/kidney/stomach energy lifts and I feel renewed!
This craving for bitter flavors always has me out searching for those young green dandelion leaves popping up everywhere about now. I eat them fresh in salads or just munch on them throughout the day. I also strain and bottle the dandelion root tincture that I put up in the late fall.
This common "weed" of the composite family is a powerful restorative to the liver. It's also rich in minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, selenium and zinc, as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3,and C. Ounce for ounce, dandelion contains more carotene than carrots.
Dandelion leaves act as a diuretic to help cleanse the bladder and urinary tract. They help relieve water retention associated with PMS.
Dandelion also cleanses the blood and liver, and increases bile production. It reduces serum cholesterol and uric acid levels and improves the functioning of the kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and stomach.
Toning the kidneys and liver is one of the best things we can do for our overall health. Especially women! A strong, healthy liver will allow us to process and excrete hormones. It's also vital for a healthy immune system.
All parts of the dandelion plants are usable, but they have different properties and should be harvested at the appropriate times.
Young Leaves have tonic properties and are picked in the spring and eaten raw in salads. If you find the taste too bitter try chopping them as fine as possible and mixing them with other raw greens.
Mature Leaves have powerful diuretiv properties. They are picked in early summer before the plant blooms. These are the leaves I harvest and dry for tea. They can also be made into tinctures. These gorgeous, dark green leaves are loaded with minerals and vitamins!
When picking dandelion leaves, look for dark green, smoothe leaves (dandelion leaves are not fuzzy.) Try to avoid picking under powerlines or close to roads.
Here's my favorite thing to do with the summer dandelion leaves:
Dandelion Juice!
Pick a colander full of dandelion leaves and rinse them really well under cool water. Run them through the juicer with 1/2 an apple. This will make a nice shot glass full of delicious, nutritious juice. You will feel a nice little zing with this lovely tonic!
Dandelion Roots Dandelion roots act as a blood purifier that helps the kidneys and liver to remove toxins and poisons from the blood. They act as a mild laxative and help improve digestion. The roots are also beneficial for skin conditions such as boils, abscesses and eczema. They have been used for centuries to improve jaundice. Ideally, you want to use the roots of 2 year old plants. In the late fall the roots will contain the highest concentration of inulin. Dig the whole plant up and hang upside down to dry in a cool, dark place. The roots grow quite long, so dig deep! The dried or fresh roots can be used to make tinctures. Dried roots can be powdered for capsules or used in infusions.
Dandelion Flowers
For a tasty, easy-to-make tonic wine try this:
Pick dandelion flowers on a warm, dry day.
Macerate 1 cup (60 g) flowers and steep in 4 cups (1 liter) white wine for 1 month in an airtight container. Strain out the flowers and sweeten to taste with a little bit of honey if desired.
This a nice tonic for the gallbladder.

The Truth About Adult ADD and Follow-through

The Truth About Adult ADD and Follow-through
 by: ADD Coach Jennifer Koretsky

If you are an adult with ADD, chances are that at some point in your life, you've felt that you are not "living up to your potential." This judgment often manifests itself when you take stock of all the great ideas you've had that have never gone anywhere, and all the unfinished projects that you have started but never completed.
The overwhelming number of these things that have not been "followed through" can lead you to believe that you are not living up to your potential.
This is simply not true.
By nature, ADDers are visionaries and idea generators. If only someone would pay us to think up great ideas all day long - we'd all be rich! But we get so many great ideas all the time that it would be absolutely impossible to follow through on every one of them.
Think about it. If you tried to implement every good idea you ever had, would you have time to eat, sleep, or even breathe right now? Probably not. But this is not an indication that you're lazy, unable to follow through, or not living up to your potential.
Successful ADDers know that they are always going to have great ideas that never come to fruition. It's just our nature to be constantly thinking, creating and innovating. We can't shut off this part of ourselves even when we try. But we simply don't have the physical or mental capability to follow through on every great idea we get.
Embrace this concept as truth. Realize that some ideas are worth following through on, and some are not. Let go of the guilt. Refuse to listen to the internal dialogue that tells you you're lazy and not living up to your potential, simply because you have too many good ideas to keep up with!
Instead, ask yourself what's practical to follow through on in the present, instead of putting pressure on yourself to do it all. Keep a notebook in which you write down your great ideas so that you can come back to them if you want to. Focus on a few great ideas that you actually did follow through with, and let these be your motivation moving forward.
And don't forget to acknowledge this special talent that you have. The ability to generate many great ideas makes you a visionary!

Relaxing Dentistry. It.s Not An Oxymoron!

Relaxing Dentistry. It's Not An Oxymoron!
 by: Dr. Pirjo Friedman D.D.S.

As dentists, we all meet patients everyday who are scared stiff of what they are about to experience in the dentist chair. Well, I'm proud to say, "I make a specialty of helping patients who are afraid of dentists!" Believe it or not, many patients find a dental appointment with me can be a relaxing experience …even enjoyable!
I'm a great believer in alternative therapies and I use Reikн in my practice to calm patients' fears and help them relax. You may not be familiar with Reikн, so let me explain—it's not voodoo.
Reikн is a technique that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve health and enhance the quality of life. The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected directly to the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The existence of this energy has been verified by scientific experiments, and many doctors and dentists now consider the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process to be of great value.
Reikн is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. Reikн treatments feel like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through you. Reikн treats the whole person including: body, emotions, mind and spirit, and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation. When used in dentistry, Reikн naturally relaxes the body and calms feelings of anxiety. As a Reikн Master, I can transfer this beneficial energy to a patient before or during their dental treatment to relieve anxiety. Patients tell me they feel a sense of peace, security, and well being making their dental visit a more pleasant experience than they ever expected.
Reikн affects different people in different ways. As well as relaxation, it can be beneficial for insomnia, stress, headaches, neck stiffness, depression and pain. Use of Reikн releases the numbness associated with freezing after treatment is completed—patients can actually articulate!
Here are a few cases where the use of Reikн made a real difference: An 11-year-old girl suffering emotional and dental trauma after a car accident needed a root canal and a broken tooth repaired. On her first visit, she could not be treated because of severe stress. On her second visit, I applied "hands-on" Reikн treatment before proceeding and was able to complete the work with no problems.
On several occasions I have treated adults who had suffered childhood traumas. In each case the front teeth were involved. With application of Reikн, the original trauma was visualized and then released, allowing successful treatment and healing. Healing is promoted in a state of silence as the body begins to heal itself. Reikн boosts the body's energy into balance so the healing can take place.
Reikн cannot be "switched off", the energy continues to flow from my hands while I work on the patient—some actually fall asleep! I've had an occasion where three patients in a row fell asleep. This is because Reikн creates a feeling of harmony in the environment where it's practiced. Relaxed patients develop a natural feeling of trust.
Recently, while traveling, a companion complained of a severe toothache for which she had been taking painkillers for two months. After 15 minutes of Reikн, the pain went away for five days without painkillers. A root canal was performed immediately upon return to Canada.
It's natural to be skeptical when hearing about treatments that seem to defy medical reasoning. In the very beginning, I was skeptical myself! But after trying Reikн on a few patients, I noticed something—the patient's mood would change. One, who had arrived in a bad mood, said she felt like laughing and dancing after the treatment. We were both amazed and I've been using Reikн ever since.

Using Reiki for Relaxing Dentistry

Using Reiki for Relaxing Dentistry
 by: Dr. Pirjo Friedman D.D.S.

The reason that many people are afraid to see a dentist probably arises from the vision they have of dentistry as it was practiced a century ago, when equipment was basic and anesthetic was scarce. Let's face it, dentistry hurt!
Today, everything about dentistry has changed for the better. But the best improvement is our use of Reiki to relax patients who are uneasy in the dental chair!
Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that lets you tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy. Since ancient times, the knowledge that an unseen energy, connected directly to the quality of health, flows through all living things has been part of the wisdom of many cultures. The existence of this energy has now been verified by scientific experiments.
As a Reiki Master, I use Reiki as a natural way to relax my patients and calm their feelings of anxiety.
Patients tell me that Reiki gives them a sense of peace and well-being that makes their dental visit a more pleasant experience than they ever expected. Some say they actually feel much better after the dental treatment than they did before they came in!
Once, I treated an eleven-year-old girl who had been in a car accident and was severely traumatized. She had gone through a lot of painful medical treatments and among other injuries, she had a broken front tooth and needed a root canal but I could not do anything as she was totally overcome by fear. After doing a Reiki treatment and relaxing the girl, I was able to finish the root canal in one session! The calming effect of Reiki allowed her to receive the treatment she needed.
With another patient, I happened to be thinking of laughter while I was doing Reiki on her. The patient, who had been nervous about having dental work done, said, "It's weird. I've been in a bad mood all day and now I feel like dancing."
I do Reiki for some of the other practitioners in my building who do extractions or surgeries. Sometimes their patients come to me before their appointment just to get relaxed. In general, Reiki not only gets them through the appointment, it also promotes healing. Because the stress of surgery or an extraction is detrimental to healing, your body does not have sufficient energy left to heal itself. Reiki makes a difference!
Now all of my staff and associates have studied Reiki and my hygienist has become a Reiki Master herself! I urge anyone who is afraid of the dentist to call me—you'll see, I'm not frightening at all!

Dieters have long searched for secret paths to easy weight loss. Soon enough, anyone trying to lose weight will discover a mind-boggling variety of weight loss plans, even some that appear to contradict others. The reason for this may be that that every person has a different set of factors to consider when starting a weight loss diet.
Individual differences in knowledge about food as well as differences in individual preferences make certain diets more appealing than others to each individual. Motivation and past experiences with dieting may make some people look for weight loss plans that are very scripted, while others will opt for more general information to apply to daily life.
One thing to remember when deciding how to go about losing weight is that there is no single best way to lose weight. There are, however, some basics common to all successful weight loss plans.
The basics of weight loss are simple.
To lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn. Calories are burned through exercise or products that boost metabolism. Eating less, as well as choosing low calorie or low fat foods limits the number of excess calories that must be burned in order to lose weight. The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to become educated about what foods and behaviors to choose.
Once you know the basics of good nutrition and exercise, you can develop a successful weight loss plan. The most successful weight loss efforts do not fall into place overnight. You will have to do some experimenting and careful research to find the method of weight loss that works best for you.

Omega 3's... Fish Oil, and DHA...

Omega 3's... Fish Oil, and DHA...
 by: Warren Matthews

Over the last year there has been considerable publicity about the benefits of Omega 3's. Most of which is true and some of which is not.
There is no doubt that Omega 3's can not only help your heart and joints but it will also help your brain. Most people are aware of this, but do the benefits of Omega 3's apply across the board for all types of Omega 3's? There are now many Companies in the world market today trying to capitalize on the Omega 3 'boom' with such a wide range of products and so many claims that it is hard for the consumer to sift out fact from fiction.
The purpose of today's newsletter is to try and concisely as possible give you the facts about Omega 3.
I will try to explain the most important ones by dealing with each of them individually.
Important Point # 1
Your prime objective for consuming Omega 3 should be to get DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) into your body. The scientific evidence supporting the benefits of DHA is now overwhelming. It is much more important than EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) which is the major Omega 3 component of most fish oils.
Important Point # 2
Not all Omega 3's will provide you with DHA and EPA. This is because these essential fatty acids are not present in a lot of Omega 3 products. For example, ground flax seed is an excellent oil for certain uses and contains Omega 3's but does not actually contain any DHA or EPA at all. Instead it contains alpha linolenic acid which your body has to convert to DHA and EPA.
In many people, particularly the elderly this conversion process is very inefficient. To give you an idea, it is estimated that most adults would have to consume 10 - 40 grams of flaxseed oil to produce just 0.2 grams of DHA.
So, if you want to get the proven benefits of DHA don't rely on getting your Omega 3's from vegetable oils such as flaxseed. Note: There is however now some products being produced from algae which contain good levels of DHA and do not require the body to convert the ALA to the DHA. But, they are still not readily available and they are expensive.
Important Point # 3
The best source of DHA is from fish oil. However, there are some drawbacks with many fish oils:
The amount of DHA is low in most fish oils. A typical level is 12% DHA and 18% EPA. The popular 'salmon' oils (which are not really salmon) are usually of the 12/18 type.
Many oils on the market today are from questionable sources and some have high levels of heavy metals or other contaminants such as PCB's. To ensure that you don't ingest these contaminants, either use oils which have been molecularly distilled, or are from impeccable sources with a reliable certificate of analysis. This basically rules out any oil which is processed from fish caught in the Northern Hemisphere.
Most fish oils are of the triglyceride form which does not easily pass through the cell membranes. (More on this later)
Important Point # 4
Some suppliers of fish oil claim that it does not matter that the EPA is higher than the DPA because the body will convert part of the EPA to DPA. This is indeed true but like the conversion of ALA to DHA the percentage of conversion is very low. This is due in part to the high consumption of Omega 6 in the typical Western diet.
Enzymes needed for the conversion are in 'short supply' in the bodies of those people who have a reasonably high level of Omega 6 intake (via vegetable oils). This is because the enzymes needed are 'used up' in having to deal with the processing of Omega 6 oils.
As a result, the conversion in most people is quite negligible which further supports ingesting the DHA directly.
Important Point # 5
As I indicated earlier most fish oils are in the triglyceride forms. A triglyceride consists of 3 fatty acids attached to a glycerol backbone. It does not pass easily through the cell membrane as it is changed. It also requires two enzyme steps to 'release' its fatty acids. Sometimes because of the structure of the triglycerides the fatty acids are not released but rather stay attached to the glycerol backbone.
In contrast, if the oil is esterified during the concentration and purification processes the resulting substance can easily enter the body's cell membranes. The esterified molecule has no charge and only requires one enterase enzyme to release the fatty acid. (DHA). This enables the body to use it as an immediate energy source, or store it for later use.
In Summary:
To receive the many benefits of DHA you have to consider ensuring that you do as follows:
Find a source of fish oil that is high in DHA or alternatively be prepared to take much higher doses of conventional fish oil.
Ensure that the fish oil you use is molecularly distilled.
Try to find the oil in the Ester form for better bio-availability.
In conclusion, try to find a quality fish oil supplement that meets these three criteria and your benefits will far outweigh the cost.

Toxic Chemicals, Are Your Children Being Exposed?

Toxic Chemicals, Are Your Children Being Exposed?
 by: Shelly Platt

You do what you can to keep your little ones safe and healthy in this world we live in. You put your household cleaners out of reach and make sure the front door is securely locked. You tuck them in at night with a story and a kiss, wishing them sweet dreams. Unfortunately, your children are not safe! While they sleep, they are being exposed to toxic chemicals found in that crib or bed you so lovingly tucked them into.
Liver poisoning, thyroid problems and altered learning, memory and behavior may be caused by Polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs. These chemicals are used as fire retardants and are found in mattresses and other furniture. PBDE levels in people and the environment have been rising rapidly in recent years, particularly in North America, where the use of PBDEs is highest. In Europe, foods, especially fish, are thought to be a major source of exposure. But in North America PBDEs are much more prevalent in consumer products than they are in Europe. In Sweden, PBDEs have been banned.
You might be thinking that if these PBDEs were so dangerous, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) would know about them and do something. The fact is, they do know. Last year the EPA announced no new manufacture or import of these chemicals can occur without first being subject to EPA evaluation. No systematic monitoring of PBDEs in the bodies of US residents is underway, and no plans have been made to assess the risk posed by the millions of pounds of PBDEs that are already found in furniture and other consumer products in people's homes. To be fair, the EPA has stated that they have not concluded that PBDEs pose an unreasonable risk to human health or the environment. Of course, they have also acknowledged there is evidence that these chemicals may cause liver toxicity, thyroid toxicity, and neurodevelopmental toxicity.
What can we do to protect ourselves and our children from these chemicals? Get as much information as you can about how your household furniture is made and what chemicals are used in the process. You might consider using organic products that are naturally made with no harmful chemicals. We can never be completely safe from the many chemicals we're exposed to on a daily basis, but we can reduce them significantly. We can look into the faces of our children and know that we are doing our part to keep them safe in an unsafe world.

The 5 Hidden Dangers In Toothpaste

The 5 Hidden Dangers In Toothpaste
 by: Scott Baker

A Must Read if You Have Children
Would you allow your family to brush their teeth with engine degreaser or rat poison? The fact is, they probably are and you don't even know it. See http://toothpastewarning.here.ws for specific list.
Dental hygiene products that you and your children use every day may contain toxins that have been linked to cancer, blindness, and even death. Have you checked out the ingredients in your toothpaste or mouthwash lately?
Many name-brand toothpastes and mouthwashes contain potentially harmful ingredients, which are made up of very small molecules that may penetrate through the tissue of your mouth, enter the blood stream, and build up in the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, and tissues.
Did you ever wonder why manufacturers are required to put the following warning label on toothpastes?
Just read the label on any major brand toothpaste or mouthwash. You'll see they are loaded with dangerous toxins and chemicals such as sodium fluoride, triclosan, FD&C Blue Dye #1 and 2, sodium lauryl sulfate, and hydrated silica. All of these common ingredients have been found to be harmful to humans. (From the Safe Shoppers Bible)
Sodium Fluoride: One of the main ingredients in rat poison and toothpaste
Many people are probably aware that most toothpaste and many mouth rinses contain fluoride because that's what dentists have recommended for years to prevent cavities. But did you know that most popular toothpastes contain enough fluoride in four ounces to kill a small child within 2 to 4 hours? (From "Fluoride Retained From Mouth Rinses and Dentifrices in Preschool Children."
In children and youth, minimal ingestion of sodium fluoride causes salivation, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, and diarrhea. Large doses of the carcinogen may cause paralysis, muscular weakness and clonic convulsions, followed by respiratory and cardiac failure. (From "Commercial Toothpaste - Natural or Poison?")
It's no wonder that fluoride can cause death in humans! In addition to being one of the main ingredients in toothpaste as well as rat and cockroach poisons, sodium fluoride is also a key component in anesthetic, hypnotic, and psychiatric drugs and SARIN NERVE GAS! (From "Neurotoxicity of Sodium Fluoride in Rats" & "Dental Conditions in Workers Chronically Exposed to Dilute and Anhydrous Hydrofluoric Acid")
Fluorides have been used throughout history to alter the behavior and mood of human beings. It is a little known fact that fluoride compounds were added to the drinking water of prisoners to keep them quiet and to hamper noncompliance with authority, both in Nazi prison camps during World War II and in the Soviet gulags in Siberia. (From The Cold War and the University)
Surprisingly, fluoride has NEVER been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Additionally, a 1990 study stated that fluoride has been shown to NOT reduce cavities and scientists are now linking fluoride to dental deformity, arthritis, allergic reactions and about 10,000 unnecessary deaths each year from cancer. (From "Fluoride an equivocal carcinogen. National Cancer Institute)
FD&C Blue Dye # 1 & 2: Are you eating crude oil for breakfast?
These dyes are artificial colorings often found in familiar toothpaste brands and a wide variety of other products. Recent studies indicate that FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 can trigger a wide number of behavioral, learning, and health problems. FD&C color dyes may also cause potentially severe allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, nausea, fatigue, nervousness, lack of concentration, and cancer. (From "Formation of carcinogenic aromatic amine from an azo dye by human skin bacteria in vitro" & "Skin discoloration with blue food coloring")
Using FD & C Blue Dyes 1 & 2 is just like ingesting crude oil as it too, is synthesized from petroleum. These dyes were originally made from coal tar oil, which is a black, sticky tar by-product of steel making and petroleum distillation, and is a source of numerous complex chemicals. Through repeated human exposure, some of these isolated coal tar components were classified as active carcinogens, ultimately leading to government regulations and restrictions.
Nowadays, coal tar dyes are synthetically engineered rather than extracted from actual coal tar, thereby greatly reducing the possibility of being contaminated with carcinogenic residuals from the coal itself. However, the dyes still contain carcinogenic properties. Over several decades of use, some of these synthetic dyes have come under greater scientific and government scrutiny due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic activity. Because of this, they are still referred to in the industry as "coal tar dyes," according to the FDA. (From U.S. Food & Drug Administration. "Color Additives Fact Sheet.")
Even if toothpaste is never swallowed, these dyes can be absorbed within seconds through the skin on the lips, or through the mucous membrane in the mouth. According to the Physician's Desk Reference, the mucosal lining inside of the mouth has an absorption efficiency of over 90 percent. Because of this, these carcinogens get into your blood, your brain, and your cells in no time at all – especially when you consider most people use dental care products 2 to 3 times a day. (From U.S. Food & Drug Administration. "Color Additives Fact Sheet.")
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): Used clinically to irritate skin
Perhaps the most dangerous ingredient in personal-care products is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Because SLS has a foaming property, it is added to toothpastes in order to generate foam and give the impression that the toothpaste is working. However, SLS has been found to be quite corrosive and harmful to skin tissue says a report by the American College of Toxicity.
In the cleaning industry, SLS is used in products such as garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Elsewhere, SLS is used for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin.
The journal of the American College of Toxicology reports that SLS can penetrate and be retained in the eye, brain, heart, and liver with potentially harmful long-term effects. Also found in most shampoos including "no tears" baby shampoos, SLS can keep children's eyes from developing properly, can cause cataracts in adults, can retard healing, and can impair hair growth.
Triclosan: A pesticide found in many types of toothpaste
Triclosan, a chemical used for its antibacterial properties, is an ingredient found in many detergents and toothpastes. However, the formulation and structure of this ingredient are similar to some of the most toxic chemicals on earth. Because of this fact, triclosan has been scrutinized in regards to human health and safety, according to Tufts University School of Medicine.
While the companies that manufacture products containing triclosan claim that it is safe, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered it as a dangerous pesticide. The EPA gives triclosan high scores both as a human health risk and as an environmental risk.
Triclosan is a chlorophenol, which is a class of chemicals that is suspected of causing cancer in humans. Externally, phenol can cause a variety of skin irritations, but since it can temporarily deactivate sensory nerve endings, contact with it may cause little or no pain. Taken internally, even in small amounts, phenol can lead to cold sweats, circulatory collapse, convulsions, coma, and death.
Additionally, chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides can be stored in body fat, sometimes accumulating to toxic levels. Long term exposure to repeated use of many pesticide products can damage the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, suppress the immune system, and cause hormonal disruption, paralysis, sterility and brain hemorrhages. (From . "Recognition and Management of Pesticide Poisonings." Environmental Protection Agency)
Hydrated Silica: A whitener that damages tooth enamel
Hydrated silica, which is primarily used as an abrasive in toothpaste, is made from a crystallized compound found in quartz, sand, and flint. (From "The Safe Shopper's Bible")
Tooth enamel re-mineralizes daily from the supply of ionic calcium and phosphorus in the saliva. Scratching the surface of the tooth with an abrasive such as hydrated silica harms the enamel and prevents re-mineralization, much like using sand to clean glass. Severe wear could eventually occur.
"The public is cautioned against excessive use of products containing 'dioforms,' which are abrasive substances that can cause the breakdown of tooth enamel. Products containing the ingredients silica and cellulose, in particular, should be avoided when gum disease, tooth decay, sensitivity and receding gums are present.
While these ingredients can remove tartar and make teeth whiter in appearance, they also may do harm to dental health by altering the acidic balance of the mouth, gums and tongue," said Dr. Warren Scherer, New York University College of Dentistry, as reported by The Naples Daily News.

Treadmill: Learn How To Make Optimum Use of a Treadmill
 by: Jasdeep Singh

Treadmills serve your purpose 24/7 and 12 months a day despite of snow, sun or rain. Without any doubt, treadmills have great utility. Half an hour walking on treadmill keep your body firm and fit. Sometimes it even helps you in loosing weight too. Probably the easiest exercise for sedentary people is walking,(recommended speed is 2 miles per hour.) Treadmills come real handy when external reasons like unsuitable weather, icy roads or your tight schedule do not allow you to go on walk outdoors.
Make your treadmill your friend! : Treadmill Guide
Initially you might feel uncomfortable while running on treadmill and feel as it is not meant for you. But this feeling generally gets on to many people. Slowly get accustomed to it. After all, it is for your great health.
Start by walking on treadmill. Set speed to say, at 5 mph to start off. You can take support from handrails but don't make it a habit. It is supposed to be used only in beginning.
Do not use hand rails once you have started running.
While running, stay in the center of the belt. Don't try too hard and try to push against the belt. Let belt do its work on its own and you just keep floating above it.
Turn on some good music so that you don't feel lonely or bored.
Keep varying the elevation at regular intervals. By raising elevation, you make up for the wind resistance which you encounter while running on roads.
Make sure you don't swing your arms outwards. Treadmills help you correcting your running posture too.
Focusing is the key. Look straight and not downwards.
Now, since you are equipped with all the knowledge to venture into buying a treadmill for yourself, I recommend you a treadmill outlet which offers immense varieties on treadmills with their work out plans at the lowest prices. Catch up their sales! Compare them before buying. Buy Treadmills. Shop for Treadmills - Factory Direct

Supplements: Know More About Supplements

Supplements: Know More About Supplements
 by: Jasdeep Singh

At times, due to your busy and fast life, we tend to miss out on the essential nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals which are responsible for our good health. Good nutrition is the most important factor in achieving optimal health. If we face some type of challenges in life which doesn't allow us to have a balanced diet all the time, then supplementing out daily diet with food supplements is quick, easy and effective way to fill nutrient gaps.
Supplements are basically substitute of the essential nutrients which we don't eat in our busy daily routine. Since these Supplements provides us with the required nutrients, it helps us get extra energy and helps us build muscles.
Who needs supplementation?
Anyone not having a balanced diet needs supplements. Importance of balanced diet has been mentioned time and again and to fill in the nutrient gaps, we do need supplements.
Body builders, muscle builders and athletes who are suppose to take extra intake of recommended nutrients must take supplements. Normal diet normally doesn't provide you with extra amount of nutrients.
Pregnant women need supplements such as iron, folic acid and calcium.
Teenagers generally do not consume adequate iron.
Since vegetarians do not consume animal products, they fell short of protein, iron, vitamin B12, zinc and calcium.
Children need supplements for their growing body and for developing bones. They can be given tasty chewable multivitamin and mineral supplements along with protein and vitamin drinks and shakes.
You have to be extra careful when it comes to supplements because most of the so called supplements do not work in Building Muscles. But no doubt, good supplements gives you an extra edge when it comes to Building Muscles.
One of the most popular and well known Supplement is CREATINE .
CREATINE: Creatine when combined with proper balanced diet gives you extra energy during Muscle Building . It allows you to put more effort during workouts. It also speeds up your muscle gain and you will see the results comparatively faster than without Creatine.

Fight Bad Breath : Halitosis

Fight Bad Breath : Halitosis
 by: Jasdeep Singh

Ever being kept at an arm's length by your friend? If yes, then there is high possibility that you are suffering from chronic Halitosis. Millions of us suffer from the same. Suffering from Halitosis is like giving nightmares to your girlfriend. and the worst part is you don't even have a clue about it until a very close friend comes up to and tells you about it. Embarrassing? yeah it can really make you feel like an alien in a group.
The root cause of Halitosis ( Bad Breath)
Generally, bad breath originates from gums and tongue. It can also take birth from stomach but its very unlikely. The bacteria from the decay of food particles is mainly responsible for the abhorrent smell. Other reasons can be poor oral hygiene or the debris left in the mouth. This decay process produces a sulphur compound which produces the unpleasant odour.
How to keep a check on bad breath?
If in some dilemma or confusion about bad breath, ask a close friend of yours.
Keep rinsing your mouth after your meals. This a temporary solution and works at times.
Cut down spicy food. Spicy food also adds to the cause and increase the unpleasant odour.
Brush your teeth when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed in night. Brushing should include tongue and cheeks too.
Drinking fluids is also a smart solution.
Don't eat tobacco products at any cost. Tobacco smoke produces substances like nicotine, tar etc which accumulates on a person's teeth which not only produces unpleasant odour but also a very ugly look. Drink less alcohol too.
Use good toothpaste which neutralize sulphur compounds and have anti-bacterial properties.
Do not skip your breakfast. Missing your breakfast may allow bacteria to re-appear.
Visit your dentist if the problem still remains. Get your mouth cleaned by getting rid of plaque and bacteria that grows on your teeth very frequently.
What are the factors causing bad breath?
Chewing of tobacco and excessive smoking. As explained above, tar and nicotine produces bad odour.
Food which you eat can also produce bad breath. Spicy and protein rich food in particular account for it.
Poor oral hygiene
Several health conditions like diabetes, sinusitis, kidney failure etc can also lead to bad breath.
Use of dentures, braces which are not cleaned properly.
Xerostomia can also bring bad breath along with it. Saliva in our mouth helps to cleanse bacteria. Xerostomia makes mouth dry as the amount of saliva reduces. This encourages bad breath.
Even hormonal changes can have a bad effect on your breath. So can dieting and age.
A self test for bad breath
Lick your wrist and wait for five seconds to allow the wrist to dry up. Now smell it. Is it foul? If no, then you don't suffer from bad breath.

Cholesterol, An Insight: Good Cholesterol and Bad Cholesterol

Cholesterol, An Insight: Good Cholesterol and Bad Cholesterol
 by: Jasdeep Singh

What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is an important part of cell membranes and is important to the structure and function of all of your body's cells. Liver makes about 80% of the cholesterol for your body. Animal products are the source for the rest of the 20% of cholesterol of the body.
First let get familiar with some widely used scientific terms. Cholesterol can either be good or cholesterol or bad cholesterol depending upon its usage and effects. Now, cholesterol is transferred in the body along with a protein. This cholesterol-protein package is called Lipoprotein. Good cholesterol is basically high-density lipoprotein(HDL) cholesterol which cleans up low density lipoprotein (LDL) from blood vessels. LDL is referred to as bad cholesterol as it combines with other substances to form plaques in blood vessels which are responsible for blockage in the blood vessels.
High amount of Cholesterol in your blood vessels shoots up your risk of cardiovascular disease. When the level of this waxy, fatty substance and triglycerides(blood fat) increases considerable, you get more likely to develop plaques in your blood vessels which furthers narrows the arteries slowly and gradually. Hence you are at larger risk to various heart-related diseases.
Do's And Dont's
. Go in for fibrous foods such as salads, fruits, soya milk, oats, soya flour etc
. Eat Omega-3 fatty acids mainly in fish such as salmon, mackerel etc
. Choose best fats for yourself such as olive oil.
. Don't take too much of flour, rice , lard, nuts etc
. Also avoid animal products like red meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products, butter, cheese etc
. Avoid oils like coconut, palm or any other tropical oils.
. Keep date with your gym or exercise schedule and do visit a doctor for perfect guidance.

Carrots : The Master Key For Healthy Living!

Carrots : The Master Key For Healthy Living!
 by: Jasdeep Singh

It slows ageing, promotes healthy vision, has anti-cancer properties, increases immunity towards various chronic diseases. Yes, carrot does it all for you. This natural health booster enhances your health on various grounds and fills in the essential vitamins to your body like pro-vitamin A, B3, C and E. Other important advantages of carrot besides those mentioned above includes preventing various gastrointestinal complaints like colic and ulcers and it also prevents heart attacks and cancer by reduces cholestrol levels as it has high soluble fibre levels.

See how Carrot works?
Beta-carotene, the main content of carrots, is maily responsible for improving your vision. The vitamin A forms a purple pigment called rhodopsin the eye needs to see in dim light. Hence, if we dont get adequate vitamin A, it can lead to night blindedness.
Beta-carotene also acts as an anti-oxidant which prevents free radicals responsible for cancer and heart attacks. A study at Texas and Chicago states that men with higher content of Beta-carotene are 37% less prone to heart related diseases. Carrot has one more anti-oxidant called alpha-carotene which reduces the risk of lung cancer.
. Tip: Cut off the leafy tops of the carrot before storing them. The leafy tops suck the vitamins from the main body robbing its nutritions. You can make best use of carrots by adding it to your favourite juices.
Wow, see the magic of carrot which is so easily available and cheap too. So start having atleast 50 gm of Carrot daily to fill in the required amount.

14 Signs That You Need to Improve Your Body Image

14 Signs That You Need to Improve Your Body Image
 by: Julie Gabriel

Whether it's making promises to lose weight or to exercise more, resolutions have long been a traditional aspect of ringing in the New Year.
For most, health and appearance can be at the top of the list in a relentless pursuit of thinness - a quest that all too often results in low self-esteem, body-image disturbances or an eating disorder.
"Many women obsess over body size and weight and develop distorted body images partly as a reflection of low self-esteem," says Adrienne Ressler, national training director for The Renfrew Centers. Body-image problems range from mild dissatisfaction to severe body-hatred.
Some of the common warning signs that indicate that a person may be suffering from body-image problems include:
Is unable to accept a compliment.
Lets mood be affected by how she thinks she looks.
Constantly compares herself to others.
Calls herself disparaging names - "fat," "gross," "ugly," "flabby."
Attempts to create a "perfect" image.
Seeks constant reassurance from others that her looks are acceptable.
Consistently overestimates the size of her body or body parts.
Believes if she could attain her goal weight or size, she would accept herself.
Allows her drive for thinness to supersede all of life's pleasures or goals.
Equates thinness with beauty, success, perfection, happiness, confidence, and self-control.
Compartmentalizes the body into parts - (thighs, stomach, buttocks, hips, etc.) rather than feeling connected to the whole body.
Has an ever-present fear of being fat - even if she is slim.
Has an overriding sense of shame about her self and her body.
Focus on the day-to-day decisions to get good, tasty fuel and fun physical activity, have friends, express yourself. These are key elements of physical and emotional well-being!

About Attention Deficit Disorder ( ADD ) & its Symptoms
 by: Balaji .B

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a condition that is usually characterized by behavioral and learning disorders. ADD generally diagnosed in children, mostly affects the boys than the girls. ADD not only occurs in childhood but also continues till adulthood in some cases.
Some of the characteristics that are commonly cited among the children with ADD are hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity. ADD results in children finding it difficult to perform a task assigned to them and focus on some of the important aspects of conversations.
ADD is a neurobiologically-based developmental disability that usually affects children. The actual cause of ADD is unknown till date. Research has shown that ADD is caused due to the genetic transmission of the condition from the parents to the children and also can be due to the result of a chemical imbalance or deficiency of certain neurotransmitters.
The neurotransmitters are chemicals that help the brain regulate the behavior of an individual. A recent study has shown that the rate at which the brain uses glucose, its main energy source, is lower in individuals suffering from ADD than in individuals without ADD.
The important features associated with ADD are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Some of the symptoms due to inattention include making careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities, facing difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, not listening when spoken to directly, facing difficulty in organizing tasks and activities, and mostly forgetful in daily activities.
Some of the symptoms due to hyperactivity include fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat, running about or climbing excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate, facing difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly, and talking excessively. Some of the symptoms due to impulsivity include blurting out answers before questions have been completed, facing difficulty in awaiting their turn, and interrupting in a conversation.

All About Acne, its Symtoms & Types

All About Acne, its Symtoms & Types
 by: Balaji .B

What is Acne?
Acne is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Some of the characteristics of acne include black heads, pimples, cysts, infected abscesses, and rarely scarring. Acne usually occurs during adolescence in both men and women. To be more specific, acne starts during puberty and tends to get worse for people with oily skin.
Types of acne
Acne starts in a similar way for all but can take different forms and can react in a unique way according to the body conditions of the individual. A basic lesion called the comedo is the begining of acne. The comedo is an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil and bacteria residing under the surface of your skin, that waits for the right conditions to grow into an inflamed lesion. Two main types of acne include non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne.
Non-inflammatory acne
Closed comedo:
If the plugged follicle stays below the surface of the skin, the lesion is called a closed comedo. This usually appears on the skin as small, whitish bumps. This condition is otherwise called as whitehead.
Open comedo :
If the plug enlarges and pushes through the surface of the skin, the lesion is called an open comedo. The dark appearance of the plug is not due to dirt, but due to the buildup of melanin, the pigmentation element of the skin. This condition is otherwise called as blackhead.
Inflammatory acne
Papule:
This appears on the skin as a small, firm pink bump. The papules are tender in nature and are often considered an intermediary step between non-inflammatory and clearly inflammatory lesions.
Pustule:
These are small round lesions that are inflamed and contain visible pus, which appear red at the base with a yellowish or whitish center. Pustules do not contain a large amount of bacteria. The inflammation is caused by chemical irritation from sebum components such as fatty free acids.
Cyst:
These are large pus-filled lesions that are usually present deep within the skin. The cysts are very painful lesions, as they are inflamed. Cysts form as a result of the contents of a comedo spilling over the surrounding skin and due to the response of the local immune system in producing pus. The cysts often leave deep scars.
Acne conglobata:
This is a rare but serious form of inflammatory acne that develops primarily on the back, buttocks, and chest. In addition, to the presence of pustules and cysts, there may be severe bacterial infection.
Symptoms
The common symptoms of acne include persistent, recurrent red spots or swellings on the skin known as pimples. Some of the other symptoms include dark spots with open pores at the center, which are known as blackheads, bulged spots under the skin without openings, which are known as whiteheads, and red swellings or lumps filled with pus, which are known as pustules. Inflamed fluid-filled lumps under the skin known as cysts are also a symptom of acne. These cysts can become as large as an inch across.

Cross Training

Cross Training
 by: Aaron M. Potts

One of the biggest misconceptions about exercise is that there is "one" program that works for someone all the time. People think that they need to get on a particular workout program and just keeping doing that program over and over again. Although getting on a good program IS a necessary first step, ensuring that your body doesn't adapt to that program is critical to ensuring that your results don't slow down or stop!
In order to maintain the effectiveness of your workouts over the long term, you have to employ a concept known as cross training. Although there is no hard and fast definition of cross training, the basic idea is that you continually change your exercise program to work both your muscular and your cardiovascular systems in a variety of ways, forcing your body to adapt to a new stimulus. Remember that the whole idea behind exercise is to make your body do things that it is not used to doing. In response to that effort, your body naturally adapts in order to meet the changing energy demands of the activities that you engage in. This process happens with your muscles, as well as with your heart, lungs, and circulatory system - collectively known as the cardiovascular system. To ensure you get the most out of your cross training efforts, you should make changes to the activities that challenge your muscles as well as your cardiovascular system.
Challenging Your Muscles
When you are putting together the muscular training part of your exercise program, remember that the primary mission of the activities is to challenge your muscles and connective tissues - tendons and ligaments - beyond their normal boundaries. For example, if you were to pick up a suitcase that only weighed 5 pounds, it would probably not be very difficult for you. However, if that same suitcase had 50 pounds worth of items inside, it would be significantly more difficult to pick up and carry. In response to that increased demand, your body would recruit additional muscle fibers to assist with the work, and in some cases would even recruit a different type of muscle fiber. Although we won't get into the details about the different types of muscle fibers in the human body, you do want to take away the fact that the number and type of muscle fibers recruited for any given task is proportionate directly to the difficulty of the task.
Let's apply this concept to weight training - or resistance training, as it is often called. If you were going to do a basic bicep curl with 5 pounds, your body would engage a certain number and type of muscle fibers. Doing exactly the same exercise with a more challenging weight would cause your body to need additional resources in order to handle the increased demand. However, is that only true of picking up a heavier weight? What would happen if you used the same weight, but did a higher number of repetitions? The same basic concept applies - your body will recruit additional resources in order to accomplish the task. What can be determined from that fact is that in order to change the stimulus on your body, two easy ways to do so are are to increase the weight and/or increase the number of repetitions.
However, there are other ways to challenge a particular muscle group in addition to simply adding weight or repetitions. What about changing the position of your body when you do the exercise? Using the same example as above - the bicep curl - most people do the basic version of that exercise standing up, with their arms extended, elbows at the side, and palms facing forward. What if you were to do the same exact movement, only this time, you turn your palms to face the center of your body throughout the entire exercise? Do you see how that would change the stimulus? You would still be engaging the biceps of your upper arm, but you would also engage the muscles of your forearms in a different way, just because of the position of your palms.
Further, what if you were to change the speed at which you did the exercise? Most resistance exercises should be done as a basic count of 2 seconds during the initial phase (also known as the concentric phase), and then a count of 3 to 4 seconds during the second phase of the movement (known as the eccentric phase). What if you were to reverse that process? Count to 4 during phase one, and only count to 2 during phase two. Do you think your body would need to react differently to handle the different stress? Of course!
There are many, many different kinds of exercises for the biceps. If you normally do bicep curls, hammer curls, and cable curls, what would happen if you started using 2 or 3 of the bicep curl machines instead? Your body would have to adapt to the new stimulus! By sitting down in a bicep curl machine, you are no longer using your leg, back, and abdominal muscles to stabilize yourself like you were when you were standing up doing a bicep curl. However, by locking your body into a certain position on the machine, you are isolating the biceps, allowing you to focus more on the contraction of the bicep muscles during the movement. Does that mean that the machines are better than the dumbbells? No. It also does not mean that the dumbbells are better than the machines - it just depends on what your goal is. What you need to take away from this section is not that one exercise is better than another - just that they are different, and that is cross training.
To summarize, here are but a few of the ways that you can cross train your muscles: Heavier Weights Higher Number of Repetitions Change the Position of Your Body Modify the Speed of the Exercise Use Machines as well as Free Weights
Challenging Your Cardiovascular System
Just like the muscular system, your body will find ways to adapt to the cardiovascular training that you do, and before long you will stop seeing a high degree of results. Let's try to use some of the same concepts that we applied to resistance training, and see if they also apply to cardiovascular training!
Heavier Weights
How can you make yourself heavier? Most people are trying to make themselves LIGHTER when they exercise! However, if you are able to find a safe way to increase the total amount of weight that your body is moving during cardiovascular training, don't you think that the activity would be more difficult, and force your body to adapt? Sure it would!
A common method that people use to do this is one that you should NOT do, and that is strap on wrist weights or ankle weights, or to carry dumbbells while you are doing cardio. Although this does increase the total amount of weight being moved by your body, it also puts a stress on your joints that is not natural, and therefore, not a good idea. However, alternatives that DO work include putting on an adjustable weighted vest, or even just strapping on a backpack with some weights or books in it! The idea is to keep the additional weight as close to your body as possible, away from easily damaged joints.
Higher Number of Repetitions
Although you don't normally count repetitions when you are doing cardio, you DO take a certain number of steps, have a certain number of revolutions per minute on the elliptical or the bike, or you take a certain number of steps on the stair master. Do you think that increasing those numbers would help? You bet! Whether it be by staying on the equipment for longer, or just working out harder to get a higher number of steps or revolutions in the same amount of time, either way you have changed the stimulus on your cardiovascular system (not to mention your legs!), and by reacting to that new stress, your cardiovascular system will burn more calories while adapting to the new program.
Change the Position of Your Body
You may be asking yourself at this point just how many positions can the body be in when you are walking on the treadmill? The answer is PLENTY! Changing the incline of the equipment is an obvious way to change the position of your body, provided you continue to STAND UP STRAIGHT. If you hunch over, or grab the machine for support, you are defeating the purpose. What about leaning backwards or forwards when riding a bike, or peddling an elliptical? By changing the angle at which your legs are pushing on the machine, you are most certainly changing the stimulus, forcing your body to adapt!
Modify the Speed of the Exercise
This one pretty much goes without saying! Go faster, and you'll burn more calories, and elicit a new adaptive response from your body. However, what about going slower? What if you are used to the Cycling class where your instructor seems to be made of steel, and can spin his/her legs around 80,000 times a minute for 30 minutes straight? Can slowing down be as effective as that? Sure it can! Trying reaching down to tighten up the resistance knob on that bike past your normal comfort level, and it's guaranteed that your body and your legs will have to find a new way to provide energy, even though you are actually going slower than you were a few minutes ago.
Use Machines as well as Free Weights
Other than what we discussed above with weight vests/backpacks vs. ankle/wrist weights, you really don't use free weights during cardio. However, you DO ride a treadmill or an exercise bike or a stair master on a regular basis, right? Trade those machines in for the real thing! Go outside and go for a brisk walk or a jog. Use a REAL bike and get out for some fresh air and an invigorating ride around your area. Find a tall building in your area and walk up and down the stairs. It's a safe bet that after a few flights you'll be wishing you were back on the stair master with it's motorized movement assistance!
The examples above have been just a few ways that you can cross train your body. There are many different training protocols, and literally thousands of different exercises that the human body is capable of. You should research as many different training protocols as possible, and even enlist the aid of a personal trainer if you need help setting up a program for yourself, or to change the program that you are already on. Remember, the key is to make your body ADAPT to new stimulus as often as possible!
Now get out there and get some exercise!
