Cosmetic Surgery . Vanity or Healthy Choice?

Cosmetic Surgery – Vanity or Healthy Choice?
 by: Rex Ryan

Cosmetic and plastic surgery has long been associated with vanity, but mounting evidence suggests that in many cases cosmetic surgery can offer substantial health benefits. Nose jobs can offer real health benefits in addition to improving the symmetry of the face. Face lifts have been shown to increase life expectancy. And eyelid surgery can create significant vision benefits for some people. All of these examples show the lines between aesthetics and real health benefits can blur when examining plastic surgery procedures.
Rhinoplasty, or nose jobs have health benefits beyond the aesthetic appeals of the procedure. In many cases, rhinoplasty can substantially improve breathing difficulties. In cases where people have broken their nose, the cartilage can become constricted, creating breathing problems. Rhinoplasty can alleviate this, along with snoring problems associated with constricted nasal passages. Many people who have persistent sinus problems have remedied the issue with rhinoplasty.
Face lifts have long been considered a purely cosmetic procedure for people to fight the effects of aging. However, evidence shows that face lifts actually can have health benefits. A study performed at the Mayo clinic reviewed data from 250 women who had undergone face lifts in the '70s. The data showed that on average, women who received face lifts outlived their counterparts in the general population by 10 years. The self esteem factors attributed to looking and feeling younger as a result of the face lift are cited as possible reasons why these patients lived longer.
Eyelid surgery known as blepharoplasty is a procedure to remove fat--usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. While the procedure does have cosmetic benefits, it can also provide real health benefits to those who have vision problems caused by excess skin around the eyelids.
Gastric Bypass surgery, while not often considered "cosmetic surgery" can be viewed as a surgery to improve appearances. Like liposuction, it reduces an individual's weight through surgical means. However, the health benefits of losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight are well documented and accepted. Losing weight is a perfect example of how health benefits and aesthetic benefits can both result from the same surgical procedures.
Most who have significant dental problems will view fixing those problems as a mandatory concern. Braces were once considered strange, but now are commonplace. People who lose teeth in accidents don't think twice about the vanity associated with replacing those teeth. Indeed, they argue that replacing broken or lost teeth is necessary for healthy eating function, as well as restoring appearance. Improving speech through dentistry has been long accepted for its benefits, and without the taboos associated with many cosmetic surgery procedures.
Cosmetic surgery is not just for vain people who want to improve their aesthetic appeal. In many cases, the real benefits of cosmetic surgery make the aesthetic improvements just an added bonus when compared to the health benefits the procedures can provide. As cosmetic surgery becomes more common, the lines between purely cosmetic and self esteem benefits and real measurable health benefits will increasingly blur. As the health benefits of cosmetic surgery become more apparent and documented, the acceptance of the procedures by the public at large will continue to climb.

Secrets of Teaching Yoga

Secrets of Teaching Yoga
 by: Paul M. Jerard Jr.

What you are about to read applies to teaching, in general. In fact, we are all teachers, to some degree. You teach your friends, co-workers, strangers and family members on a daily basis.
The example you set teaches someone in some way. Whether you are a positive role model, or not, people, and the world, react to you. Sorry to say, you have more responsibility than you thought possible.
Do you realize that when you hurt one person, it will set a chain of events into motion? Even worse is that, most violent acts were stimulated by smaller, seemingly unimportant events.
When you talk to your students, always show mutual respect. Don't take advantage of your position as a Yoga teacher to temporarily feed your ego.
The first thing a Yoga teacher should instill, in his or her students, is self-motivation. The serious Yoga student must be a self starter. This is a person who practices Yoga at home, as well as in class. They don't depend on their friends to come to class, and they show up like "clockwork."
How can you make your Yoga students become self motivators?
You must show up to class early, enthused, and energized. Encourage all of your students and sincerely praise their achievements. The truth is, Yoga is like music, you can teach a student the basics, but to be a master teacher, you want to stir the creativity from within.
When your students become creators, you can help them refine their Yoga practice and watch them become self motivators.
A truly great teacher will produce teachers, who surpass him or her; and isn't "passing the torch" what it's all about?

How to find the right Yoga teacher?

How to find the right Yoga teacher?
 by: Paul M. Jerard Jr.

I am often asked by beginners about how to evaluate a Yoga Teacher?
The following is the "CALM check list." These factors are basic criteria that your Yoga Instructor should meet before you continue on to a second Yoga class.
CALM gets it name from four main factors: Communication, Assist, Listen, and Modification. For the right Yoga teacher, you should be answering with a "yes" to all questions.
• Communication: Does your Yoga teacher talk to you, and other students, in a manner of mutual respect? Can you ask a question during class time?
Does your teacher show compassion for you and other students? Does your Yoga teacher take the time to lead you through a guided meditation or relaxation? Meditation and relaxation are major aspects of Yoga practice.
There are Yoga teachers who just want to get "their workout" done. Beware of Yoga teachers, who are so important, they don't have time for you.
Some students love this air of superiority and, unfortunately, some people love abuse. If you want to learn Yoga, you need an open line of communication with your Yoga teacher.
• Assist: Does your teacher care about your form? Will your teacher give you a verbal or physical assist during your Yoga class? Are props encouraged in your Yoga classes?
Some students never have major problems with alignment and some do, but if your teacher doesn't give verbal cues, what does that tell you?
• Listen: Does your Yoga teacher take the time to listen to your feedback? Is your teacher "in the moment" with the class?
Once in a while, there is a Yoga instructor who runs, "The-it's-all-about-me-show." You are not going to learn anything from this type of teaching. Beginners will be put at risk, trying to keep up with a seasoned Yoga teacher who doesn't explain anything.
• Modification: Does your Yoga teacher allow modifications and props? If your teacher discourages props, you are in the wrong place.
Some students will need props for life depending upon their range of motion. Just because a teacher can do a posture without props, doesn't mean every student can.
Summary: Stay away from abusive Yoga teachers, and if you are attracted to abuse, there is always professional help. Some students crave "the stern, but loving parent" types. They will push you harder, but how much pushing do you really need?
Respect is a two way street, and you deserve as much respect as your Yoga teacher does. Let common sense be your guide. You should feel good after a Yoga class, and you might even feel muscle soreness days after a vigorous class.
Make sure your Yoga teacher meets the above criteria before making a commitment.

Eating Wisely and Weight Loss

Eating Wisely and Weight Loss
 by: Paul M. Jerard Jr.

Please bear in mind that I am not a dietician, or a physician, and my opinions are those of a Yoga teacher and life-long student of Ayurveda. Always consult your family physician before changing your diet.
It may be generally agreed that eating wisely and weight loss do not often agree. Just look back that the parade of "fad diets" that didn't seem to work over the long term and, in retrospect, were not wise from the onset.
This article will be a "union" of ideas from Ayurvedic principles, modern fitness concepts, and overall strategies for better health.
It goes without saying that a vegetarian diet is healthy. Only a decade ago, there were many reservations, among local physicians in New England, in regard to this concept. How rapidly knowledge, insight, and opinions change.
Marie, my wife, exposed me to the vegetarian diet. Before that, I ate what is now called the "Mediterranean Diet." The diet I eat, to this day, is a combination of the two. The combination of these two, "classic" diets, are easy for me to live with and it is not an effort, at all, for me.
That is the biggest hurdle for most people. Many of us take on a radical dieting change that we cannot live with. Most of us can afford to make a few small changes at a time, instead of changing everything at once - unless you are dieting under the guidance of your doctor or dietician.
Therefore, I propose a few small changes to your eating habits that will make sense. You do not have to change them all at one time.
Sit down and focus on eating your meal.
Avoid television, reading, heated conversations, etc.
Thoroughly chew your food at a slow pace and do not put more food in your mouth until you have swallowed the previous bite.
Be aware of how hungry you are before your meal.
Try to avoid too much time between meals, as this leads to over consumption and your stomach should never be more than three quarters full, after a meal.
Exercise tip: Some of you practice Yoga and understand the many benefits of Sun Salutations, but have you ever tried weight resistance?
Strength training increases energy expenditure during a weight resistance training session. The high intensity of strength training indicates a high utilization of carbohydrates during a training session.
During the post-exercise recovery period, energy expenditure is elevated for a period ranging from two to fifteen hours (1). The increased energy demands are obtained by burning more calories, and a good portion of the calories are coming from fat stores.
Reference (1) - Melby C, Scholl C, Edwards G, Bullough R. Effect of acute resistance exercise on post exercise energy expenditure and resting metabolic rate. Journal of Applied Physiology 75(4): 1847-1853, 1993.
Even if you work every body part just once a week, this method of cross training will effectively burn calories. When you combine this with any aerobic activity, you have a powerful combination. Rowing and bicycling are good substitute forms of resistance too.
Strategies for results: Get help from a qualified Personal Trainer, Dietician, or a Life Coach. You could do it all yourself, but how much time do you have to "spin your wheels." without any progress? These services exist for those who don't want to waste time and want solutions now.

Living with Your Diet

Living with Your Diet
 by: Paul M. Jerard Jr.

Recently, I was reading about a diet plan where you throw everything out of your pantry.
Although this sounds like great news for the supermarkets, over the short-term, this leaves very few choices for you to actually eat.
Can you exist on salad, topped with Flax seed oil dressing, for the rest of your life?
People believe that they must pay penance for their eating sins. Dietary and exercise torture seems to be good for the conscience and the prescription of the day.
How else can we explain "off the wall" diets and "extreme" exercise programs?
Whatever happened to eating in moderation and using common sense? Even if you are eating a "diet cookie," you can't have all you want.
If you travel, or eat in restaurants frequently, you have to eat in moderation, space your meals out, carry healthy snacks, or visit the salad bar at your local supermarket.
There are plenty of good choices, and it won't cost you an "arm and a leg."
When you eat, you shouldn't feel stuffed after a meal.
This slows down your digestive system, similar to the principle of a "log jam," and you may not eat for six hours or more, depending upon the amount of food consumed.
This is a time when your body is crying to go for a walk.
You should feel comfortably full every time you leave the table, and you should eat five or six times a day; three moderately-sized meals and at least two healthy snacks.
Sorry to say, diet cookies are rarely healthy. If they were of nutritional value, I would live on the Chocolate Chip Cookie Diet.
Now back to reality, if you love dessert, you can't give it up for life. Depending on the state your health, you may have to seriously cut back.
Therefore, consult with your family doctor, get a diet that makes sense, and please walk, swim, or exercise regularly.

Eight Amazing Benefits of Teaching Yoga

Eight Amazing Benefits of Teaching Yoga
 by: Paul M. Jerard Jr.

Every challenging occupation yields some sort of satisfaction, but the fitness professionals industry had an amazing 85% job satisfaction rate according to an Idea Health & Fitness survey.
Job Satisfaction
In the same survey, 98% of those interviewed felt that "My work gives me a feeling of personal accomplishment." Lack of personal satisfaction is the most frequent reason why people leave a job. These statistics make it obvious that this is an extremely harmonious atmosphere to work in.
For many of us who worked in the corporate world and shifted into the health and fitness industry, the energy felt in a health club, ashram, or wellness center is similar to being on vacation.
There's always something to do, but the job itself is very gratifying.
Rewards of Helping Family, Friends, Students, and Co-workers
Your self esteem improves as you find solutions for the pain management of others, ailments, fitness, stress management, positive thinking, etc.
The list goes on, as you continue your own journey of self improvement, but the feeling of gratification you get from helping someone find the right path, is beyond words.
You will always remember: That student who reaches their ideal body weight, the physically impaired student who finds that they, too, can live a better quality life, and the student who leaves your class without the headache or backache they came in with.
Your Own Health
As a practitioner of Yoga, you have become more aware of your daily ups and downs. You monitor your breath, posture, moods, diet, and exercise on a daily basis.
As a Yoga teacher, you are setting an example to your students and teaching them to live a quality life. This path will enable you to live longer and live better.
There is no Shortage of Work
When the working world is in the "9 to 5" mode, you have many opportunities with Corporate Accounts, The Fitness Industry, Senior Centers, Medical Centers, Referrals, etc.
This is when you to teach them, with any free time you have.
Once I became totally self-employed, there were more daytime off-site Yoga teaching opportunities than I had time for in a geographic area that has many active Yoga teachers and studios. One of my best students, who became a Yoga teacher through our on-site program, inherited an area that I could no longer service due to time restraints.
The object is to contact them. This is where your post cards come in handy, if you don't have a personal referral.
Continuing Education
Yes, learning new things keeps your mind stimulated and healthy. You will never tire of subjects to study, explore, and investigate. There are so many facets of Yoga, that one life span, is just not enough time to learn it all.
It's not a race, but it is a journey. You will find friends, colleagues, and students who are on the same path.
This makes giving, receiving, and sharing a wonderful thing along the way.
Time
You will have time to stop, think, breathe, relax, or meditate. You can always fill your plate beyond its limits, but you no longer have to.
You can determine whether or not you will be stuck in traffic during rush hour. You decide what hours you will work and what days you have off. You will come to the realization that your time is your own.
Independence
Everyone wants control of their own life, but very few achieve it. Being in business for yourself, can help you control your own destiny and that of your family.
Sure there are limits to what one person can accomplish, but it is better to try than to have never tried.
Success
No matter what you want, if you write down your short-term and long-term goals, you will make great progress toward them.
You should keep these goals in a place where you can see them daily and visualize yourself accomplishing your goals.
You should be specific about time frames and ethical methods used to meet them. You can even use them in meditation.
Review your long-term goals at least once every season and every year. Review your short-term goals daily. You will see yourself make rapid success in this way.
Lastly, goals do not have to be material at all. For example: You may want to start teaching Yoga in a year, and the following year, get a part-time Yoga teaching position.
This type of goal setting is realistic and beneficial to mankind.
That is the key – If you choose a goal that will benefit others, you will surely achieve it.

Natural Hair - Get Creative With Homemade Recipes

Natural Hair - Get Creative With Homemade Recipes
 by: Elle Paris

Do you wear your hair natural? No lye? As many will tell you, once you make a change to go natural your hair regimen must also change. This frequently includes an adjustment to the types of products you use on your coils. A number of your old stand-bys may no longer lend you the same results on your kinks as they did on your straight hair.
Product junkies will agree -- you can spend hundreds of dollars testing out the numerous products available on the market, many of which are supposedly intended for natural hair use. However, breaking the bank is really not necessary for a healthy, strong and shiny natural. You already have key ingredients in your own kitchen and bathroom!
Creating your own hair recipes not only saves money, but allows for a more intimate relationship with your hair -- you can gain a much better insight as to what your hair craves, prefers, or rejects with your at-home experiments.
Get creative! There are a few simple rules to follow to find your perfect concoctions:
Don't mix too many things at once. Start out with simple recipes, say, mixing one main ingredient and adding a small amount of another. It's much easier to determine what worked and what didn't when your ingredients list is limited.
Create two-ingredient mixes and try them until you find a mix that works well on your hair. If it's a "perfect" mix, continue using it! If it's a "pretty good" mix, retry the recipe with the same main ingredient then alter the secondary ingredient until you reach perfection. You may find you need to reverse the amounts used, making the main ingredient the secondary ingredient.
If there is one particular ingredient you find most always works well on your hair, make it a staple for your hair recipes, adding it as a standard part of all your recipes.
Alter the way you apply the mixes to your hair. Try dousing your hair with your Super Yogurt Surprise while your hair is drenching wet in the shower. Does it work well this way? Try another time by making it a bit more liquidy and spritz it on your dried hair with a spray bottle. Perhaps your hair responds better to this application.
For ingredients, a general rule of thumb is if it's ok to ingest, it's probably ok to apply to your hair as well. Pureed fruit, honey, apple cider vinegar and many more items are great additions to homemade hair recipes.
Take note of what works for you and how it worked. Some recipes may be better for clarifying while others make for great deep conditioners.
Search and compare! If you're a little timid about applying egg whites to your hair, make use of resources available to you before doing so. Search the Internet for your particular ingredients. You just may find others who have tried the same type of recipe and enjoyed success or experienced a nightmare.
Go beyond your kitchen! Many cities have well-stocked health food and natural stores with a huge selection of ingredients to boost your hair recipes. Experiment with essential oils (a few drops go a long way!), xanthum gum (a thickener, also known as xanthan), as well as conditioners and leave-ins you won't likely find at department stores and drug stores.
Remember, a recipe failure is a good thing. It lets you know what your hair simply does not respond to well. The worst likely thing that can happen with the use of your homemade products is the need to wash your hair again, so get creative!
Note: Use of homemade mixes for coloring of hair is not recommended.

Restless Legs Syndrome or Growing Pains?

Restless Legs Syndrome or Growing Pains?
 by: Donald Saunders

Restless legs syndrome is a common sleep disorder affecting about 1 in 10 adults. Characterized by an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, itching or prickling in the legs and an uncontrollable desire to move the legs, restless legs syndrome is one of the most common causes of insomnia.
It is normally seen as a problem once you reach the age of about fifty and tends to get worse as you get older. It's also the 'poor relation' of sleeping disorders and unlike insomnia, sleep apnea or narcolepsy, all of which are studied in medical school and reasonably well understood by doctors, restless legs syndrome is given relatively scant attention. One study even goes so far as to suggest that in as many as 3 out of 4 cases the condition goes undiagnosed, even when the patient presents with all the symptoms of the disorder.
This lack of focus on the problem, and general acceptance of it being a problem of the middle aged and elderly, perhaps hides the real extent of the problem and, in particular, masks the fact that restless legs syndrome may well play a major part in the lives of our children.
For many years now children have been complaining of symptoms at night which we have brushed off as simply growing pains. In addition, our children often appear unable to sit still for more than a couple of minutes and we simply put this down to normal childhood hyperactivity. The truth, however, is that a substantial number of our children are in fact suffering from restless legs syndrome.
The cause of restless legs syndrome remains something of a mystery although a good picture of the disorder is now beginning to appear and two elements of this picture should act as a wake up call to the medical profession.
The first element in the picture is that of a genetic basis for restless legs syndrome. It is now accepted that this condition runs in families with one study showing that as many of half of all cases show a family history. This is re-enforced by recent chromosome studies identifying a specific gene that is believed to play an important part in susceptibility to restless legs syndrome. Perhaps most significant of all however is a report published by the Mayo Clinic at the end of last year which showed that in a study of more than 500 children nearly three quarters of those with restless legs syndrome had a family history of the disorder.
The second element in the picture is that of an iron deficiency in sufferers. A number of studies by respected institutions, such as John Hopkins University, have shown that low levels of iron are common in cases of restless legs syndrome. It comes as no surprise therefore that more than eighty percent of the children in the Mayo Clinic study with restless legs syndrome also showed low iron levels.
So just what does all of this mean? Well, it's simple. If your child is having trouble sleeping and complaining of discomfort at night, particularly in the legs, perhaps there is a little more to it that just growing pains. Similarly, if your child is constantly running around or jumping up and down then perhaps discomfort in the legs rather than hyperactivity is the cause.
Growing pains are normal in children, as are periods of excessive activity, and the odd night here and there is certainly nothing to worry about. But, if your child's growing pains appear night after night then there's a good possibility that these aren't growing pains at all, but are the symptoms of restless legs syndrome.

Herbs vs. Synthetic Vitamins and Minerals

Herbs vs. Synthetic Vitamins and Minerals
 by: Bo Jeune-Fille

COMPANIES do not KNOW HOW TO MAKE HERBAL FORMULAS without BULK VITAMINS and MINERALS
There is a trend on the market mixing herbs with different ingredients also called the 'fillers'. Seriously, just look on the label – most Supplements are mixed with herbs...
Why?
To make those products more attractive for you. Extra Vitamins, Minerals and other 'goodies' are purchased as a bulk. So, when you read the label you see a long list... Yes?
THE UGLY TRUTH IS OUT... Minerals are striped of from the sea-salt and from other sea vegetables. Often, man-made synthetic Vitamins and Minerals are added to your supplements and Health Foods. GENERIC/Synthetic Vitamins and Minerals are inexpensive to make, just as generic drugs.
One thing those companies do not understand that HERBS should NEVER be mixed together with isolated Vitamins and Minerals. NEVER!
Bulk products are often not fresh, different product can have a different exp. date and the worse what can happen, when herbs are mixed with them. Herbs are especially sensitive to air exposure so, before the final product is ready herbs are not as potent.
Q: WHY HERBS ARE MIXED WITH OTHER INGREDIENTS?
There is only ONE answer to this question: It is not easy to make herbal supplement that works! So, companies are adding other by-products to increase their effectiveness.
Herbs are smart, they know what to do, and in the right hands they are transformed into the work of ART. Herbs works best in the combination - just as gourmet dish... each ingredient is fine but together they are unforgettable. Now you must wonder if your formula is the work of ART too?
Let me help you to answer this burning question, and to help you to draw your own conclusion. I assume that you like your Supplement(s)...
Q: How long you are taking them? 1 month, 6 months, 1 year or longer?
A: Quite honestly, it makes not difference what Supplement you are taking, if you can't feel or see results after 1 month, it is time to make decision...
Q: Why you are taking them?
A: To correct medical condition or, just to maintain your good health?
Q: Do you see and/or feel the difference between now, and before you started taking them?
A: Good supplement should produce results before month is over - and your blood test should confirm it.
Q: Do you want to feel better than you are feeling now?
Q: Do you believe there is nothing better than what you are taking at this time?
A: So, if you feel so good that you can't imagine feeling any better – the answer is clear, you should stay with your Supplement but... if you are wondering how much better you could feel – your imagination is going to become a reality right now... right here...

Fighting Depression by Restoring Your Routines

Fighting Depression by Restoring Your Routines
 by: Allan Cowley

When we have depression, one of the things we drop from our lives is a routine. Most humans need routine as it adds structure to our lives. During bouts of depression we find it hard to go about our daily lives with a sense of purpose and direction. Restoring your routines will help to counteract this problem.
Even the simplest things can appear to be beyond us and therefore get put aside. When this happens, we are in fact, only moving further away from a "normal" life.
To reclaim a normal life, return to doing normal things.
A major effect of depression is a feeling of losing control over ones life. We start to feel that everything is happening "to us" rather than through the choices we are able to make. By reinstating your routines you can begin to regain more control.
Start by writing a list of the day-to-day activities that you may no longer participate in.
I include a few simple suggestions below and possible remedial action you might take for each.
1) Brushing your teeth. Clean your teeth twice a day and use a mouthwash. There ARE going to be times when you smile, so make sure you are prepared! Even if the smile is accidental, there is no point in having a piece of lettuce between your teeth.
2) Remain well groomed. For men this would include having a shave every day, for women, putting on make-up (I know of some men and women who need both!). Trim your fingernails.
3) Personal cleanliness. Have a shower every day and use a deodorant, after-shave, cologne or perfume.
4) Clean clothes. Put on fresh clothes every day. Make sure your clothes are ironed; even if someone else usually irons on your behalf, taking charge of your own ironing will help in your recovery.
5) Eat sensibly. A loss of ones appetite, especially for sensible foods, is very common. Make the effort to eat as much fresh fruit, vegetables, fibre and nutrients as possible. If you find that your stomach is in a knot and the thought of eating fills you with dread, try taking these things in the form of a drink. Use a food blender, juice extractor or similar. There is a wide variety of these machines on the market. Adding an appropriate multi-vitamin supplement to your daily diet can also help. Don't be afraid to allow yourself a food treat now and again, just be careful not to overdo it. "A little of what you fancy does you good", with the emphasis on "little".
6) Get out as often as you can. Even if, at times, all you think you can manage is going out into the garden, then you are, at least, getting some fresh air and a bit of sun on your face. Exercise is a great way to lift your spirits, so even going out to post a letter will help.
7) Keep in touch with family and friends. Losing touch with our loved ones leaves us feeling more isolated so make the effort to meet up with those people you care about and who care about you. Even if you feel that you can't manage to see anyone face-to-face, phone them, write a letter or use email. If you don't want discuss your life with people you know, you could consider the likes of internet forums as an outlet for expression. Talking to strangers is often easier.
8) Look after your personal environment. Housework not only improves the look of your surroundings but also provides good, low level exercise.
9) Don't get bored. Do ANYTHING to fill in that gap. Do a crossword, read a book or magazine that you find interesting, polish the silver, polish your shoes, shave the cat. Just do SOMETHING. Make it an activity you have to concentrate on so that your thoughts are, at least temporarily, distracted from the depression. Even 5 minutes of concentrating on another subject is a welcome "holiday".
Now turn your list into an action plan. Take the points you have noted down and make a chart with all the various activities you have listed. Each day, tick off each step as you go. Not only will taking positive action improve the way you feel, but by showing to yourself that you ARE taking action to defeat the depression, you will give yourself a well deserved feeling of achievement.

Hidden Dangers From Poison Oak, Ivy & Sumac Plants

Hidden Dangers From Poison Oak, Ivy & Sumac Plants
 by: Wayne McDonald

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, each year 10 to 50 million Americans develop an allergic rash after contact with Poison Oak, Poison Ivy and Poison Sumac Plants. The invisible oily resin called urushiol causes the ill effects of these poisonous plants.
Poison ivy, oak, or sumac is found in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. These plants are important to the eco-systems where they thrive. The small, white or bluish berries found on the ivies feed a number of birds and small animals. The irritants found in urushiol oil do not effect most animals and the tangles from the plants serve as shelter.
This oily resin can stay on pets, shoes, hiking boots, clothes, toys, garden tools, lawn mowers and anything else that has made contact. In fact, the oil stays active on any surface, including dead plants, for up to 5 years.
Symptoms
After making contact, the reaction (called dermatitis) may include a rash followed by bumps and blisters that itch. Scratching does not spread the outbreak but may cause infection because it allows bacteria from dirt on the hands to enter the skin. Symptoms can last ten days to several weeks to heal.
Mild Symptoms Severe redness Signs of infection, such as pus Rash in mouth, eyes, or genital area Rash on a large portion of your body or face Mild symptoms can be treated with simple and natural home remedies. See below.
Severe Symptoms Swelling of the throat, tongue, or lips Difficulty breathing or swallowing Weakness or dizziness Bluish lips and/or mouth Unconsciousness Severe Symptoms need immediate emergency medical care.
Caution
NEVER burn poison ivy. Burning these poisonous plants puts the urushiol resin in the air and can get in your lungs and possibly your neighbor's lungs. If you get poison ivy in your lungs, you will need to go to the hospital.
Pet Alert
The only threat to resin on our pets is if it is rubbed off onto other things or people. If your pet merely has the bumps and is itching, you can not catch it from them.
Treatment
Because urushiol is a oily resin and not a water based fluid, it will not evaporate and it can linger for several years.
Use mild soap and cold or cool water to wash off the resin. Do not use hot water because it opens your skin pores and thus absorb more of the oil.
You may want to apply rubbing alcohol to the affected area(s) with cotton balls, and then rinse again with cold water. You can apply calamine lotion, a zinc oxide ointment, or baking soda paste (3-tsp. soda to 1-tsp. water) to the affected area(s), or soak in an oatmeal bath, to relieve the symptoms somewhat.
Generally, the best treatment is time — the rash and itching should go away on its own in one to two weeks. Try to keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth, and face, and scratch as little as possible, as this will irritate the rash further and may introduce infection.

6 Keys To Getting Maximum Results In Minimum Time With Your Home Exercise Equipment (and save money!)

6 Keys To Getting Maximum Results In Minimum Time With Your Home Exercise Equipment (and save money!)
 by: Tom Storms

I used to love going to the gym. The sounds, the smells, the grunts, the groans. Nothing seemed more inspiring. Then life got in the way. I got busy. Very busy.
Working with my fitness clients and athletes took up a lot of time, and frankly, I wasn't too thrilled about taking the time to drive to the gym anymore. I do have a life, you know. Then there was the fight for parking not to mention the fact that I had to wait to use the equipment while someone else finished up his or her workout. I didn't really like the music they played so loud I had to shout over it so my training partner could hear me, and the sales staff was constantly hounding me for referrals.
But I have to tell you about my new favorite place in the world to workout. My home studio. In fact, I like it so much that I recommend that everyone train at home if a gym membership isn't up your alley. It's got everything in it that I want, and everything that I need to successfully train. AND get this it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.
Training at home has been so successful for me and some of my clients, I've set up an online facility that will allow me to personal train anyone in their home. You can give it a look at www.thebodymatrix.com. The greatest part about it is you don't even need equipment if you don't have any. Bodyweight workouts are phenomenal for conditioning and weight loss. Obviously, if your goals are more specialized, some equipment may be necessary.
Consider this. How much do you have to spend each year for a health club or gym membership? Now add up all the years you've gone to the gym and all the years you will go to the gym for the rest of your life. That's a big chunk of change! When you think about it, it makes total sense to buy your own equipment and do it at home.
There's no drive to the gym. No waiting. No annoying sales people. You can listen to the music that you want to (or put a TV in the gym for cardio training). Oh, and the best part is that it's always open. Want to get in a good workout on Christmas day. You can.
Here's the tricky part. You can't just go out and buy whatever equipment seems popular on TV or in magazines. Do that and you'll be unhappy in less than a month. You need a plan to determine what you need in the way of equipment to successfully achieve your fitness goals.
The following 6 points are MUSTS if you want to save time, money, and maximize your success in a minimum of time.
1. Define your personal fitness goals as specifically as you can. For any fitness-related goal there are a number of methods you can use to be successful, but first you have to know where you're going. Do you want to get stronger? Do you want to build muscles? Lose weight or reduce your body fat? Increase endurance? Reduce stress? Are you preparing for a sport? All the above? Without knowing that you could end up spending more money than you need to on equipment that you'll never fully utilize. Not to mention you may fail in your attempts to achieve your goals.
2. How much space are you willing to devote to your home gym? If you've only got a 5 x 5 space at home, you're really going to have to be efficient. Don't expect to fit large pieces of fitness equipment into such a small space. Be realistic. Maybe it's time to clear out the room you're using for storage or that corner of the garage that is just wasted space. Maybe you've got some space, but you'll need to make your gym a little more portable so you can store it away when it's not in use.
3. Familiarize yourself with your options on types and brands of exercise equipment. Find out what you'll be comfortable with. Would you invest in a house or car without looking at several options or a test drive? Remember, this is an investment in you. There are all types of equipment from treadmills and crosstrainers, to selectorized weight equipment, to barbells and dumbbells. Check out equipment on the Internet or in catalogues. Stop by the exercise equipment retailers and actually see it and even try it out before you even consider buying. Believe me this is time well spent. When the time comes to discuss equipment with the appropriate person, be it a salesperson or a fitness professional, you won't be completely in the dark when it comes to determining your wants and needs and end up buying something you hate or won't use.
4. Consult with a fitness professional. Take advantage of a professionals "in the trenches experience" and educational background when it comes to matching your fitness-related goals with selecting the appropriate equipment for you. Again, this saves you time and money by preventing you from wasting money on useless or poorly designed equipment. You may also find that your fitness professional may have relationships with fitness equipment retailers which will allow you to buy your equipment at a discount.
5. Always buy top quality equipment from a reputable retailer. Yes, it costs more money, but as the saying goes, "You get what you pay for". This is so true when it comes to exercise equipment. Avoid the temptation of trying to save a couple dollars by buying equipment that may not be up to your required standards. Buying top quality equipment will last you a lifetime. If you have any doubt, compare how much you have or could have spent on gym memberships over your lifetime with the cost of your new fitness equipment. I have no doubt that you will always spend less money on your home gym than you ever would by purchasing a lifetime of gym memberships.
6. Utilize local retailers as much as you can. While it may seem logical to save money by purchasing equipment online or via a catalogue, shipping charges on fitness equipment can be outrageous. You end up spending more than if you shopped at your neighborhood retailer. There is also an issue of maintenance. Even the best equipment can experience the occasional breakdown. Try getting a mail-order company to service your equipment. It's not easy. Your local retailer can usually resolve your problems in no time at all.
There you have it. These recommendations will help you tremendously. Please keep in mind that it's just not as easy as it seems, but it is worth the extra time especially when you're making such a serious investment in yourself. That's why I encourage you to seek the help of a fitness professional.
If you're sick, you go to the doctor. If you've got a tax problem, you see an accountant (or an attorney!). Have a toothache? You're off to the dentist. Leaky pipes result in a call to the plumber. So why is it that so many people attempt to solve their health and fitness problems without consulting an expert? I don't know exactly, but I encourage you to make the investment in yourself – in your quality of life – by hiring a qualified professional to educate you and help you get started.
If I can be of any assistance to you, please don't hesitate to call me. I'm happy to speak with you and give you my recommendations without any sales pressure (I hate it when people try to "sell" me, so I wouldn't try that on you).

Can Mexican Pharmacy Purchases Be Trusted?

Can Mexican Pharmacy Purchases Be Trusted?
 by: Stephen Dayton

Purchasing drugs from a Mexican pharmacy is, for the most part, a very safe and inexpensive way of getting the medical supplies that you require. Since the laws in Mexico are very different than in the US, as most drugs are readily available without a prescription (except for some controlled substances and all narcotics), purchasing drugs from a Mexican pharmacy should be a fairly painless process.
However, there are some risks associated with purchasing drugs from a Mexican pharmacy – but they are no more risky than any other purchase you'd make on the Internet today. Awareness is the first step, and this article will help you become a more informed health care consumer so that you make the best drug-related choices for you and your loved ones.
Counterfeits:
Unfortunately, counterfeit drugs are on the rise in the Mexican pharmaceutical world, and it's almost impossible to spot a fake these days without the help of a trained laboratory technician. The best way to avoid this situation is to only purchase your medications from a Mexican pharmacy that requires a prescription. Although by Mexican law a prescription is not required, a pharmacy that asks for one is usually on the up and up.
Expiry Dates:
It's not only the prescriptions that aren't required in Mexico; pharmacists are also not required to be licensed. And without a license, many pharmacists just don't realize (or don't care) that expired or poorly stored drugs can be hurtful. Make sure to ask about your Mexican pharmacy's licensing requirements, if there are any, before filling any prescriptions to alleviate this concern.
Misplaced Replacements:
If your doctor has prescribed a drug, do not accept another generic drug, or replacement drug, from your Mexican pharmacy. Since you aren't a medical doctor yourself, you have no idea what this 'new' drug will do to you, or how it will affect your lifestyle or any other medications you are taking. In short, don't accept replacements, and go elsewhere if you aren't given any other option. If you would rather a generic drug, then ask your doctor to prescribe it you to, first, and then take that prescription with you to the Mexican pharmacy.
Language Barrier:
Many drugs that you order from a Mexican pharmacy will come labeled in Spanish, or in broken English. Alternatively, your medication can be mislabeled, not labeled at all, or do not have the proper information attached. Make sure to ask first how your pills will be labeled before you purchase anything.
Shipping Time:
Check around; most Mexican pharmacies can take anywhere from 7 days to 6 weeks to deliver your much-needed medications, as opposed to the pharmacy down the street who can probably get you exactly what you need within minutes. Sure, the price may be dramatic, but have you checked the shipping costs as well? Is it really that good of a deal?
Although this article may seem a bit harsh, it's not intended to be. An informed consumer is a smart consumer, and many excellent Mexican pharmacies exist that will cater to your every need. Just keep these points in mind when you're surfing the Net for medications, and you'll be sure to find the best Mexican pharmacy for your needs.

Eating Disorders And The Use Of Yoga In Prevention And Treatment

Eating Disorders And The Use Of Yoga In Prevention And Treatment
 by: Roy Thomsitt

It was not so long ago that eating disorders, such as bolimia and anorexia, were thought to be purely the result of mental conditions. More recently, though, some physical factors have been attributed to these conditions. It is now thought that eating disorders can be triggered by a multitude of factors, in combination, including those of a psychological, behavioural, social, or biological nature.
How Can Yoga Help With Eating Disorders
As with many conditions, eating orders can better be dealt with through a calm and focused mind. Depression and low self esteem are problems often associated with eating disorders, and Yoga can help with both.
It has been proven that Yoga can reduce depression, restoring a state of balance and well being in the individual. Also, there are different yoga practices which encourage heightened levels of self esteem, and promote a positive view of your own body. These are crucial factors with eating disorders, and it has been shown that the application of yoga can significantly increase recuperation and healing. Through the elimination of self judgment, yoga establishes a strong connection between mind and body. This, of course, is the natural state of wellness. By re-establishing this strong connection, mind and body will work in harmony to repair the damage.
Regular yoga practice will increase the overall fitness level of the human body, improving the immune system and giving it a good chance of fighting illnesses. This is helpful with Anorexia, for example, because the sufferer's body will experience lower energy levels, and the condition reduces bone density.
In dealing with eating disorders, the yogic system identifies them as a problem related to the first chakra. There are different yoga poses that can be used to balance it: eg. staff, crab, full wind, and pigeon. By using grounding postures (eg mountain, goddess, standing squat and prayer squat) strength and courage can be increased. What these postures do is to re-establish the strong mind-body connections, and through that connection help overcome many physical obstacles. For anorexia sufferers, most of the yoga back bending poses help reduce depression, while forward bends can calm the spirit and reduce anorexia's effects.
Because the mental state has an important role in eating disorders, meditation can be used successfully to reduce negative and harmful thoughts and feelings. An active, well targeted, meditation practice should prove to be very effective. The yoga poses work best when external factors are shut out, and concentration is allowed to focus on your inner self. Giving special attention to breathing, and also to inner sensations, will transport you to a state of greater awareness and calmness. This new state will allow you to go on further to explore new concepts, and hopefully pursue new goals that may have been impossible before.
As with many medical conditions, being aware of the bulimia or anorexia problem, and showing a constant and strong desire to defeat it, is a great method to reduce their effect. It is likely that an early adoption of yoga practices would make the patient more aware of the problem, thus making a positive contribution to an early cure. However, these yoga techniques are more usually used in the recuperative stages of the illness. That is a pity because, as with all illnesses in which it can be beneficial, yoga works best in the prevention stage, when the negative effects are still low and easier to over come.

What Should You Look For In A Massage Therapy School?

What Should You Look For In A Massage Therapy School?
 by: Peter Faber

If you are considering engaging in a great career in massage therapy, let me compliment you on your selection. Massage is one of the few careers which aids individuals in need, allows flexible hrs, and for those who ambitiously pursue it, opens up the door to a lucrative income. Once you have decided on your career, your next big decision should be which school to attend. I have furnished a list of 5 valuable questions to ask yourself when analyzing the huge amount of therapeutic massage schools to choose from.
Question 1: What is the timeframe that it will it choose from beginning to end? Massage schools have a broad variety when it comes how much time must be invested to finish. Massage therapy schools can vary anywhere from 6 - 15 months, or longer. Keeping this in mind, you have to ask yourself two important questions in regards to the amount of time you place in your education. Remember, if you hurry through a program, you have a better chance of missing out on something. On the other side of the coin, you have to also weigh how much money you may lose if you have to spend 6 months to a year longer in school when you could be getting your income rolling.
Question 2: Will it be very expensive? Education tuition might vary anywhere from $6.00 to $17.00 per hour of education! The average usually falls around $9.00 or $10.00 per credit hour. If you are in an unlicensed state and want to join a quick program, you may actually be able to get the necessary 100-hour training for under $1,000. In licensed states, which require 500 hours, tuition usually ranges from $5,000.00 to $9,000.00.. Some schools include the cost of supplies, or even a massage table. Be sure to factor in what is included verses what you are called upon to acquire before you commit. For example, if one school costs $1400 and includes your table, it will end up being cheaper than the school which costs $1000, but requires you to purchase a table. Tables run an average of around $500.
Question 3: Will therapeutic massage school hours work with the rest of my loyalties? Virtually all schools are aware that the individuals who are attending their curriculum have other things to do as well. Most students have to hold down jobs while attending massage school, while others have children at home. Many schools offer programs designed to cater to the working adult. Check to make sure that the school you like offers a variety of schedules to meet your needs.
Question 4: How do I pay for it? When you compare the cost of becoming a licensed massage therapist verses the cost of a bachelors degree, you would save approximately $60,000. Even so, most of us do not have $5,000 - $9,000 lying available to place in an education. Hence, financial aid is important to consider. Keep the following in mind: All federal loans and grants for education can be paid only to students attending federally accredited schools. Look for a reputable accreditation, such as the Integrative Massage

Combat High Blood Pressure And Cholesterol With Soybeans

Combat High Blood Pressure And Cholesterol With Soybeans
 by: Nicholas Webb

You may have heard of the "Portfolio Diet" wherein it has been clinically accepted that increasing the intake of soy based foods can reduce levels of LDL cholesterol as much as some statin drugs.
Well, now it seems that soybeans have another health-giving quality: they also reduce blood pressure.
This latest finding is making quite a bit of noise in medical circles and not without reason. Can you imagine how hard the two largest drug markets (cholesterol and blood pressure) would be hit if the American Heart Association or the American College of Cardiology released a statement saying that soybeans can reduce bad cholesterol and control blood pressure? Just think about it. But that's where it will stop; in your thoughts. With all the lobbying power of the giant pharmaceutical industry, I seriously doubt that such a statement from an internationally recognized source will ever be released.
However, to date more than 40 clinical trials have clearly shown that soya protein can reduce cholesterol in men and women. The effective dose of soy protein per day appears to range between 25 and 50 grams. Now initial studies show that it is also useful in fighting high blood pressure.
Soybean protein lowers blood pressure
In a report from the Annals of Internal Medicine (July 2005), it seems that use of soybean protein dietary supplements may help reduce high blood pressure.
Soybean products have been commonplace in Asian diets for centuries, and soybeans, as well as its derivative products have long been available in our local health stores and supermarkets. Research has shown that food items like tofu and soymilk can reduce cholesterol levels and lower risks for cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. If we add the ability to fight high blood pressure to the list of illness and diseases that soy foods are able to combat, then we might just have a super disease killer on our hands.
In the study covered by the Annals, a group of American and Chinese researchers focused on 300 Chinese patients suffering from hypertension. One group was and given 40gms of soy protein while the second group was given wheat-based carbohydrates.
The objective of the trial was to examine the effect of soybean protein supplementation on blood pressure in persons with pre-hypertension or Stage 1 hypertension. The results showed that Soybean protein supplementation resulted in a reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. As such, increased intake of soybean protein may play an important role in preventing and treating hypertension.
The researchers of Tulane University, New Orleans say it's unclear how soybean products might reduce blood pressure. One theory is that soy proteins widen blood vessels while helping the body do a better job of processing blood sugar.
In a related editorial, Dr. Jeffrey A. Cutler and Dr. Eva Obarzanek of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, state that the new study provides "another important link between blood pressure and dietary macronutrient intake," but add that further studies are needed before soybean supplements can be recommended to patients with high blood pressure.
Soybeans, soymilk, tofu, bean sprouts, meat substitutes, cookies and even soy-based ice cream are all commonly available. Maybe it is better that you don't wait for the big medical institutions to start singing praises about soybeans. If you want an edge, perhaps now is the time to start making some changes to your diet. Throw in 40 minutes exercise four times a week and your high blood pressure will really take a dive.

Attack of the Cancer Fighting Tomatoes

Attack of the Cancer Fighting Tomatoes
 by: Michael Brooks

That's right, the colorful little fruit (yes, it's a fruit) has been shown to pack a powerful punch against several forms of cancer. A variety of studies indicate that a diet rich in tomato based products (tomato paste, sauce, juice, soup and ketchup) can significantly reduce the risk of prostate, lung and colon cancer. Not bad for a fruit that was considered by many to be poisonous and inedible until the 19th century.
What is the Active Ingredient?
The active ingredient that makes tomatoes such a formidable opponent against cancer cells is the carotenoid called Lycopene. Lycopene is the natural red pigment found in tomatoes and tomato based products. The redder the tomato, the more lycopene is present.
How does Lycopene Fight Cancer?
In the body, lycopene is deposited in the liver, lungs, prostate gland, colon and skin. Its concentration in body tissues tends to be higher than all other carotenoids. Some organs, such as the testes and adrenal glands, store higher levels of lycopene than do other organs or tissues. Lycopene acts as a super antioxidant by picking up free radicals in the body. Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction. Their primary danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs.
Is there any Research on the Cancer fighting power of Lycopene?
Although more large-scale studies are needed before any definitive conclusions can be made, current research does suggest that lycopene from various tomato products is indeed associated with the lowered risk of several types of cancers. Several published reports are listed below.
Gann et al. 1999 - Cancer Research
The study examined initial plasma caroteniods (including lycopene) of 1872 men in 1982, and then followed them for 13 years. These men were randomly assigned to a placebo group or a group to receive beta-carotene and aspirin supplementation. Of the men studied, 578 developed prostate cancer versus 1294 control subjects. Lycopene was the only antioxidant with a significantly lower average blood level in those men with cancer as compared to those without cancer. In those men not receiving the aspirin and beta carotene, plasma lycopene levels were very strongly related to a lower risk of developing prostate cancer. This study concluded that increased consumption of tomato products and other lycopene-containing foods may reduce the onset of prostate cancer.
Giovannucci 1999 - Journal of the National Cancer Institute
This journal is a review of research studies available regarding cancer risk (not just prostate cancer) and intake of tomato based foods as well as blood lycopene levels. After identifying 72 studies that fit these criteria, it was found that an inverse relationship between tomato intake or blood lycopene levels and cancer risk was reported in 57 of them. Of these 57, it was found that 35 of these inverse relationships were statistically significant. It was also found that cancer protection from lycopene was strongest for prostate, colon and stomach cancers, but also appeared to have some benefit in the treatment of other cancers.
Rao et al. 1999 - Nutrition and Cancer
This study examined plasma and prostate lycopene levels in cancer patients and a control group free of cancer. Though only 12 patients were in each group, significantly lower serum and prostate lycopene levels were found in those with cancer. Levels of other carotenoid substances did not vary between the groups.
Additional Benefits
In addition to fighting cancer, the lycopene found in tomatoes has been associated with better mental activity in old age and a reduced risk of heart disease. A University of Maryland study found that tomatoes might protect the eyes by hampering macular degeneration, a cause of vision loss in older adults.
How do I get Lycopene into my body?
The best source of lycopene intake is through eating tomato-based products. This is more effective than supplementation. You will get the most lycopene through concentrates and processed products such as tomato paste, sauce, soup and canned tomatoes. Heating helps to release lycopene and adding a little light olive oil will increase absorption. Start packing your diet with more tomato based recipes and begin enjoying the cancer fighting power of the mighty tomato.

 by: Kerry Emrich

Fear of Death
Fear of death is the fear of dying or of dead things. The medical or scientific name for this fear is Necrophobia. This is an astonishingly common phobia with millions of sufferer's world wide. It is an impractical and unreasonable fear, no one wants to die but we can not allow ourselves to be overcome with this fear and not live our lives to the fullest. There is nothing we can do about death, it is inevitable, and as such the fear of death is of no value to us.
There are many kinds of phobia, fears and anxieties, but the fear of death is particularly troublesome so millions of people world wide. Fear of death has been treated successfully in the past and you will be able to overcome your anxieties and fear of death.
The only realistic fear related to death would be to be afraid of dying from things we can avoid, such as lions, tigers, or war. We can prepare and make plans to avoid such things, to increase the time we have left on this planet. We must live out each day free from the fear of death but still plan to avoid the factors that we can control.
This danger avoidance helps us to prepare and make plans so that we are not currently in any danger. This can be achieved by learning how to swim to help avoid drowning (which of course is a cause of death) and to make to further prepare to learn to avoid or minimize other dangers. Another example of this would be to wear our seatbelt while driving to reduce the risk of injury or death if we are involved in an accident.
Death is a natural part of life, and we must remember that all things will die one day. We can prepare ourselves spiritually for death. This can be formal such as going to church, or other religious temple, or as simple as meditation or simply being a good person
It is also quite common to have regrets when we die. We can do many things other than to simply have a fear of death to prepare for it, and to reduce the pain of our friends and family when that day comes. Paying our bills, making sure we have insurance to cover our funeral, planning our funeral, these are all things that will reduce the stress and anxiety of others. Each day we can do good things to make our life more meaningful and give us a sense of purpose.
Life is a journey, we are part of this world, but it is not our home. We are like adventurers simply passing through the world as part of our journey through eternity. Making the most of each day is the best thing you can do to get the most out of your life and to feel at peace with yourself.
Stop worrying and start living! Life is short, and tomorrow is uncertain, so make the most of each day, take time to smell the roses, and have no fear of death.

Essential Tremors

Essential Tremors
 by: Jim Boxley

Have you ever seen people in public whose hand or hands shake?Have you thought to yourself, they must have Parkinson`s or maybe they had to much to drink? Sometimes you may even make fun of them or try not to be around them.
Each day you get up and brush your teeth, button your shirt, tie your laces, and can hold a cup of coffee, but people with advance tremor can only do this with great difficulty. Most people with the disorder don`r even have a social life or go to great lengths to hide the shaking, they avoid holding anything or will use 2 hands, but most avoid doing anything that would draw attention to themselves.
In public or around strangersmost will avoid eating and drinking until they can do it unobserved.
Essential Tremor (ET) is the most common form of tremor. ET was called benign tremor but there is nothing benign about it. It is often mistaken for Parkinson`s, and can affect people of any age. This is being written to enlighten and inform people of the disorder.
The disorder will usually get worse with age. Today there are more than 20 different kinds of tremor, so don`t be misdiagnosed.
ET can be involuntary, oscillating, wobbling, rhythmatic, or a movement or shaking of your head, arm, hand, or torso or a combination of these.
It can occur on one side or both sides of the body. Common types of tremor are: resting, postural, task specific, Essential and Parkinson`s.
A family history will be present but not always. Millions of people are affected by tremor in the US alone. ET is a neurological disorder that is more common with the aging but can be present at any age, with mine it surfaced at the age of 17.
Defining ET: Posturial tremor occurs in the arms and hands during action and noaction or drugs known to cause are present. Head, voice and neck tremor may or may not be present and no other known factors causing this are present.
ET causes uncontrollable shaking of the hands, voice, torso, head, legs and other parts of the body and will increase in severity when trying to perform an action of any kind.
Many different drugs are available to treat ET, such as Propananol, Premadone, Sotalol, Atenolol and various others.
Before much was known about the disorder even valium was prescribed because it was belived to be"just your nerves",some medical people still believe this because they don`t know about tremor.
While the different drugs will help, they will not completly do away with the symptoms but will help manage them and improve the daily lives of those affected. As time goes by the drugs will have less and less effect and dosage will have to be increased, as in my case, years went by and maximum dosage was reached without effect and the new surgery was opted for.
When all else fails to control the disorder you can fall back on surgery with brain stimulators, which will interfere with or block the bad signals the brain sends and therefore helps the tremor to not happen. With deep brain stimulators you can lead a more normal life and even work jobs you were afraid to try before.
The surgery sounds scary but the procedure, while being a little uncomfortable and with the fact you have to be awake during the proceedure, isn`t as bad as it sounds, and when you see the results a couple months later you know it was worth it.
If you have the disorder or know someone who has seek out a neurologist who has traing in this field. In my case a neurosurgon was found who was also teaching the subject in our local medical school.
This type of surgery has less complications than other surgery and is also reversible. The older treatment involves cutting away part of the thalmus.

4 Important Facts You Should Know About Whey Protein

4 Important Facts You Should Know About Whey Protein
 by: Hamoon Arbabi

Are you concerned about taking care of your body before and after strenuous activities or workouts? Do you try to avoid supplements that contain additives and possible side effects?
If you are interested in better health and improved physical fitness you have surely heard that bodybuilders and other athletes are turning to a simple, natural supplement called whey protein.
WHY DO ATHLETES USE WHEY PROTEIN?
Protein levels are depleted through exercise. Muscles require amino acids to prevent deterioration, give endurance and build mass. Proteins supply these amino acids to the muscles which is why athletes use whey protein.
WHAT IS WHEY PROTEIN?
Commercial whey protein comes from cow's milk. Whey is the by-product of making cheese and was usually thrown away as a waste product. Now researchers know that whey protein is high quality, natural protein that is rich with amino acids essential for good health and muscle building. It is naturally found in mother's milk and also used in baby formula. It is being considered for use as a fortifier of grain products because of its considerable health benefits and bland flavor.
Although protein is also found in other foods such as meat, soy and vegetables, whey protein is proven to have the highest absorption (digestion) levels in comparison to all others.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER USING WHEY PROTEIN?
Whey protein has many health benefits including immune support, bone health, sports health, weight management and overall well being.
Because amino acids are 'building blocks' for the human body it is sometimes used by patients to speed up the healing of wounds or burns.
The high quality protein that comes from whey makes it a recommended choice for those who need optimal benefits from restricted diets including diabetics, those on weight management diets and even ill patients not able to consume enough protein in their diet to assist with healing.
CAN WHEY PROTEIN BE DANGEROUS?
Whey protein is a food and so it does not have have the risks associated with other supplements. That said, too much of anything carries risks. Extremely high use of whey protein can overload the liver which can cause serious problems. Moderation is always recommended.
If you are lactose intolerant you might try whey protein isolate which has less than 1% lactose and should be tolerable for most users.
Whey protein is a natural and healthy way to bring protein into your diet and increase well being.
