Help For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Help For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
 by: Dr. Rita Louise

In the past, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was referred to as the "yuppie flue" because when it was first identified, most of its victims were well educated professionals in their 20's – 40's. Today, doctors still argue as to whether the disorder even exists, but those who suffer from it know it does.
Some health experts believe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, bronchitis, mononucleosis or hepatitis that goes "underground" and zaps the body of all its resources. Others say that it starts after a period of intense stress, while others believe chronic fatigue is a disease of lifestyle – were we have mismanaged our personal energy resources. And while there are a number of theories as to the origin of this disorder, to date, there is no clear cut definitive cause.
The classic symptom of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a profound fatigue that doesn't improve with bed rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity. Other symptoms can include: sore throat, swollen glands, low grade fever, headaches, depression, muscle aches, mild weight loss, memory problems, sleep disturbances, confusion, difficulty thinking and inability to concentrate. For some the symptoms they experience are vague and can come and go. For other, their symptoms are so severe that they can't get out of bed much less function in the world.
Currently, it is difficult to diagnose Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This is because many of the symptoms can also be a sign of a more serious disorder. Thus, for a finding of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to be identified, protocol dictates that other health disorder must be ruled out before a diagnosis is given.
Recommendations For Wellness
Get plenty of rest. Try not to allow yourself to become chronically stressed.
Schedule some time for yourself. Go shopping, take a hot bath, get a massage, listen to some relaxing music, meditate, do yoga or tai chi.
Begin a moderate exercise program. Many people report feeling better once they start exercising. Be careful to not overexert yourself. This can worsen symptoms.
Reduce or eliminate foods that stimulate the body such as coffee and ones that are made of white flower and white sugar.
Incorporate herbs such as licorice root (420-6), suma (1088-5), astragalus (40-1), Siberian ginseng (660-9) or Pantothenic acid (1640-2) to help strengthen the adrenal glands and counteract stress.
Herbs such as valerian root (721-1), passion flower (500-3), hops or chamomile (190-7) can help to relax the nervous system, reduce anxiety and calm the body.
Begin taking calcium and magnesium (1671-9). Calcium and magnesium are required to promote healthy energy metabolism in muscle cells.
Malic acid (4061-6) plays a central role in energy production and can help reduce reduction of muscle pain and tiredness.
Some research suggests that an alkaline diet can offer considerable relief from symptoms of Chronic Fatigue. Foods such as vegetables, fruit (except citrus), whole grains, beans, lean poultry and fish will promote an alkaline pH in the body. Products such as coral calcium (1873-7) or Nature's Sunshine's pH GreenZone (1091-5) will also support the body' pH levels. To test your pH levels purchase some test strips (2918-8) that can test pH level of your urine or saliva.
A homeopathic formula for fatigue and exhaustion (8840-0) can assist in alleviating the symptoms.

Exercise
Exercise improves the tone and quality of muscle tissue and stimulates the processes of digestions, absorption, metabolism, and elimination. It strengthens blood vessels, lungs, and heart, resulting in improved transfer of oxygen to the cells and increased circulation.

Combating Obesity

Combating Obesity
 by: David Chandler

So you ask, " How do I determine if I am Obese, Overweight or fat?" Usually 20% or more over recommendations on standard weight charts indicates that you fit into the obese category. Obesity refers specifically to having an abnormally high proportion of body fat.
An estimated 97 million adults in the United States, 55% of the population, are overweight or obese! Similar percentages exist for the United Kingdom, showing that the United Kingdom having the highest percentage in Europe.
Obesity is increasing
Largest increase has occurred in the last 10 to 15 years. Increases were seen in both sexes and all classes, with the greatest increase in 18- to 29-year-olds and in those who have achieved higher education.
Weight gain is dependent on a person's energy intake being greater than energy expenditure. One pound (0.45 kg) is equal to 3,500 calories. Therefore, a person consuming 500 calories more than he or she expends daily will gain 1 lb a week.
Food cravings
Weight alterations in either direction cause changes in energy expenditure that favor a return to the set point. This helps explain the poor problem of recidivism following attempted weight loss. Only by reaching a lower weight for a period of time can the person get used to feeling lighter.
Children
Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. In rare cases, a medical problem, such as an endocrine disorder, may cause a child to become overweight. Your physician can perform a careful physical exam and some blood tests, if necessary, to rule out this type of problem.
TIPS
A sensible diet and some exercise, has shown to be the most effective thing to do.
A key point is not to eat too much junk food and to ensure you get the basic nutrition your body needs. You should eat at least two portions of fruit and vegetables each day. We would highly recommend supplementing your diet with super foods.
Physical activity is a necessary component of every weight loss plan.
Eat three meals a day at about the same time each day sitting at a table.
Eat slowly.
Avoid distractions such as television or magazines.
Cook smaller amounts; use smaller plates.
Avoid second helpings.
Scrape plates directly into the garbage.
By following the steps above you can not only rid yourself of the known dangers of being obese, but also you can increase your energy levels and feel better.

Understanding Diabetes

Understanding Diabetes
 by: David Chandler

To manage diabetes, it helps to understand how it affects your body. In healthy people, the body turns food into glucose (blood sugar) to use for energy. Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is the hormone responsible for shuttling glucose into the body's cells where it is either used right away or stored for later use. With diabetes, however, high levels of glucose build up in the blood because either the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or the body can't use the insulin it produces. Your treatment will depend on which problem you have.
Diabetes is broken down into three categories: type 1 or type 2 or gestational.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, usually leading to a total halt in insulin production. Insulin shots or the use an insulin pump to keep the blood glucose within normal range is a daily activity. Insulin - stimulates the entry of glucose into fat cells. Glucose is a simple sugar that normally enters the cells of liver, fat and muscle to be stored or converted into energy. Because insulin is one of the "major" hormones, it's also impossible for your body to balance its "minor" hormones until your insulin metabolism is balanced first. Without insulin, blood glucose rises to dangerously high levels, if not treated it can lead to a coma or death. Type 1 most often occurs in children or young adults. Type 1 diabetes is usually referred to as insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes often appears suddenly. Knowing the symptoms of diabetes can help you determine what steps to take. Here are some of the symptoms: High levels of sugar in the blood High levels of sugar in the urine Frequent urination Extreme hunger Extreme thirst Extreme weight loss Weakness and fatigue Moodiness and irritability Nausea and vomiting
In type 2, the pancreas produces some insulin, but the body in unable to use it properly. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood. Because people with type 2 diabetes are often overweight, treatment usually includes weight loss. Until recently, type 2 diabetes was called non-insulin dependent or adult-onset diabetes. Often, type 2 diabetes develops slowly, and symptoms are mild: Increased thirst More frequent urination Edginess, fatigue, and nausea Increased appetite accompanied by weight loss Repeated or hard-to-heal infections (for example, skin, gum, vaginal, or bladder) Blurred vision Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet Dry, itchy skin
Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy when blood glucose levels rise above average. After delivery, blood glucose usually returns to normal, though women who have gestational diabetes are at greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes, if left uncontrolled can lead to high blood pressure or a large baby. Most pregnant women are routinely tested for the condition. If you test positive, your doctor and registered dietitian will work closely with you to keep your blood glucose under control.
For anyone with diabetes, it is encouraging to know that the future gets brighter every day for managing the disease. Ongoing research provides people with the most up-to-date information and successful treatment plans possible. Diabetes information along with good diabetes management will help your body to function closer to normal.
To help you feel confident in managing diabetes, you can obtain additional information on what it is, who is at risk, how it's diagnosed, and how it's treated. You can also get information on eating well with diabetes. You can learn the role of food in managing your blood sugar levels. You'll also get the latest nutrition advice; tips for shopping, cooking, and eating out; and the basics of building a meal plan using food exchange tips from the American Diabetes Association and The American Dietetic Association.

Stretch Marks: The Facts!

Stretch Marks: The Facts!
 by: David Chandler

Stretch marks are purplish streaks and scars that normally appear on the buttocks, hips, abdomen, breast, and arms. They are a common side effect of growing too fast. They form when the dermis (the middle elastic layer of your skin) is stretched breaking down the elasticity in your skin. As the elasticity breaks down, the skin tries to reinforce itself with collagen in the over stretched skin, thus causing stretch marks.
Factors that contribute to the formation of stretch marks are:
Heredity - some skin types are just genetically predisposed. If you mother had stretch marks, chances are you will.
Weight - excess rapid weight gain as found in pregnancy and bodybuilding or to the other degree excessive weight loss.
Skin type - Some skin types are dryer than others thus having less elasticity, while well-hydrated skin tends to have more elasticity.
Removal and prevention of stretch marks:
Surgical methods - Dermabrasion, chemical peel, and advancement in laser treatments can be used to treat stretch marks. As with any cosmetic surgery, age, skin type, and even diet will influence the results.
Lotions and Crиmes - Advancements have been made with over the counter crиmes. If you are pregnant or body building, consult with your doctor to begin a preventative treatment for stretch marks.
Diet - Maintain healthy hydrated skin by drinking plenty of water. Hydrated skin keeps your skin soft, supple, and less likely to develop stretch marks. Caffeinated coffee, tea, and soda tend to dehydrate the skin leaving you more vulnerable to stretch marks. Eat foods that promote skin health such as foods high in zinc, vitamins A, C, and D, and protein rich foods.
Remember that not all stretch marks are created equal. They age and heal differently depending on the skin type, heredity, diet, and hydration. In time, they will fade, but the best advice is to maintain healthy skin, which will minimize the effects of stretch marks if they should occur.

My Teeth are Now Zoom! Whitened

My Teeth are Now Zoom! Whitened
 by: Stuart Simpson

Let me tell you about my Zoom Whitening experience. For those of you who are unaware about teeth whitening products, the Zoom product is professional use only. Works rather quickly as opposed to the every night crest whitestrips. But it does cost more.
I went to the dentist's office and was setup with the dental assistant. She went over my teeth to remove and plaque or residue to have a clean tooth surface to apply the zoom gel. They put something on my gums to protect them from the gel. It felt like rubber, but it was a gel that was in a tube. They had an appliance to hold my mouth open so I didn't have to hold a terror scream position the entire time I was there.
Cotton ball rolls were used to hold my lips off my teeth. They basically want your teeth exposed, only your teeth, and to just let them hang there in the air while they apply the gel. She painted on the gel, which is a hydrogen peroxide gel. Then they used a Zoom light to enhance the whitening. It looked like a black light. She told me that it made the peroxide act quicker and faster, and after researching, I found that using the light helps by over 33%.
They did my six front teeth, top and bottom, 12 total. First, they applied the gel, did the zoom lamp, and then they wiped off the gel, and applied more gel. They did this 3 times to the same set of teeth. So, overall, it took about an hour and a half before I was ready to go. I got to catnap in between whitening.
What happened after I left?
The zoom whitening continued to whiten my teeth for 12-18 hours after the procedure. So, I couldn't drink any heavy staining drinks like coffee, cokes, or tea. But wait, I'll miss my caffeine rush. You might need a caffeine pill or take an Excedrin migraine pill. I think they have caffeine.
It was uncomfortable to have my mouth propped open for so long, and the chemical gets into the enamel, dentin or pores of the teeth so they were sensitive to everything. But, about 20 hours later, I was good as new. The whitening had taken effect and my teeth were no longer sensitive. I heard some people it takes up to 3 days to get back to normal, but I was fine.
I wanted to share my experience with you if you were thinking about the zoom whitening in office treatment. They also had a home treatment you could use, but I wanted to take advantage of the 33% more whitening with that zoom lamp they used. I can tell they are whiter. Suppose to get up to 8 shades whiter. I don't know how much I got, but it does look better.
Cost? Mine was about $250 total. I'm sure it varies depending on where you go.

Ten Of The Best Supplements That Men Need For Optimum Nutrition

Ten Of The Best Supplements That Men Need For Optimum Nutrition
 by: Robert Walker

There are many nutrition supplements at your local health food store. So many to choose from so confusing which ones are the right ones. How many should you take? Here you will learn what you need to take for the best health benefits. A word of warning here although these products are convenient getting some of your nutrition in liquid form or capsules is only recommended when you can't eat properly or you feel you are not getting your proper daily nutrients. The companies that make the products themselves mostly fund the studies of meal replacements, and the manufactures usually test their supplements against similar supplements not the benefits of whole foods. BORON WILL AID IN THE DEFENSE OF PROSTATE CANCER A high level of this mineral will help reduce the chances of getting prostate cancer by 65%. US males have a one of the lowest boron levels compared to other countries.
Only 3 milligrams daily help fight cancer and studies show also improve memory and concentration.
Boron is not in stock at all health food stores. It is also naturally found in raisins and almonds.
CALCIUM FOR STRONG BONES AND WEIGHT LOSS Many men are not getting the daily allowance of 1,000 mg. A cup of milk has only 300 mg. It has been found that men with high calcium levels weigh less than men with low levels of calcium.
A dosage of 1,200 mg is preferred. Make sure you have calcium citrate it is the purist form. Take half dose in the morning and half at night. Avoid coral calcium it has some impurities.
If you get your 3 servings of calcium daily you won't need any more. You could exceed your maximum daily intake 2,500 mg.
CHROMIUM HELPS FIGHT THE CAUSES OF DIABETES It is used to assist in muscle-building, but now research has revealed that chromium can help overweight people control insulin levels. Chromium helps the body's response to insulin, this makes it better to keep the levels of blood-sugar in check.
The most effective form of this supplement is chromium picolinate. A 35-microgram dose daily is sufficient. Check with your doctor to see if you need to increase the dosage to 200 mcg, if you have a diabetic condition.
COENZYME Q10 FOR A SURE ENERGY SPIKE Coenzyme Q10 is produced in the body it assists the cells by directing your body's energy supply. As men get older the production levels diminishes. One way to revitalize these levels is by taking this supplement. Current research proves coenzyme Q10 can possibly aid in the fight against cancer, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and could help prevent heart disease by thinning the blood. Q10 also can be used as an antioxidant that helps slow the aging process by fighting free radicals.
A dose of 100mg daily is suggested. If you are taking statin drug for cholesterol or high blood pressure you can increase the dosage to 200mg.
CREATINE FOR THAT MUSCLE AND MEMORY SPIKE Studies from the University of Wisconsin have shown a boost in men's bench press on the average of 15 lbs and also increase in the squat exercise weight by 21 lbs just by taking over a 2-3 month period. Aussie studies have also suggested that tests with memory and intelligence scores increased after 6 weeks of creatine use.
A recommended dosage of 5 mg daily mixed with a whey protein supplement to get highest possible advantage.
It is possible you won't respond to creatine alone. You can mix in a sugar substitute a see if this will help get a response.
FOLIC ACID TO SLASH ALZHEIMER'S DANGERS This supplement will increase blood flow to the brain by preventing clotting of arteries. Folic acid will also lower the levels of an amino acid called (homocysteine) that can cause blood clots. A warning sign of Alzheimer's is high homocysteine levels. Sweden studies have shown low levels of folic acid were found in Alzheimer's patients.
A 500 mg dose if preferred daily. This dose should decrease homocysteine by almost 18% or more. You can get folic acid from these foods citrus fruit, beans, and breads and cereals that are fortified.
GLOUCOSAMINE WILL LUBRACATE THOSE JOINTS As men grow older the cartilage in the joints decreases. You can turn back the hands of time by using gloucosamine to repair and rebuild any harm to the cartilage you may have received over time. Crab and lobster shells are the main ingredients in gloucosamine. Lancet published a 3-year research study that showed 200 people that had joint conditions had reduced stiffness and pain by 25% by using gloucosamine. A12 week treatment program by The British Journal of Sports Medicine reported an 88% reduction of joint related problems by using gloucosamine on patients. A 1,500 dose daily is sufficient for a good response. A combination of gloucosamine with chondroitin will bring that cartilage right back to those early days. A study from Australia showed that spreading a gloucosamine cream of painful joints could relieve some pain.
OMEGA-3S YOUR HEART HEALER This supplement will aid in keeping high blood pressure and low triglycerides in check. Omega-3 fatty acids make the blood flow better, thus lower the chances of blood clots that could block the arteries. A high omega-3 count has shown to lower the some conditions related to heart disease.
If you in good health a dose of 1,000 mg is fine. For those in the high-risk heart disease group you may need 2,000-4,000 mg. A doctor will know what dosage is best. A side effect of to much omega-3 is a greater chance of catching a cold.
A 500 mg gelcap twice daily with meals will keep that ticker beating too the right tune.
SELENIUM YOUR ALL OUT CANCER DEFENDER This could be the your best choice for the fight against cancer. This nutrient has caused most cancer cells to tear down by them selves. Some studies have shown that selenium has lower some risk of cancers related to the colon, lungs, and prostate.
A dose of 200 mg daily is recommended. If you're sick taking more possibly will reduce the length of your sickness. Some research has shown that deceased levels of selenium have made some virus change, making symptoms worse for the flu and for colds.
In nature certain nuts like The Brazil nut, contain as much as 100 mcg per nut.
VITAMIN E TO BRING THE EFFECT OF AGING TO A CRAWL Said to be the best antioxidant around today. This vitamin has been linked to lower cases of heart disease, some eye conditions, and some cancers. Some research has lead nutrition specialists to recommend Vitamin E after exercise because of its ability to lower muscle problems related to exercising. A dose of at least 400 IU is preferred daily. Most people only receive a portion of this dose about 45 IU by way of a multivitamin. To get more Vitamin E in your diet increase your intake of nuts and oils.
Try to get natural Vitamin E called (d-alpha tocopherol) this is easier for the body to absorb.
If you are confused about which type of multivitamin to buy here are some pointers. A multivitamin helps lower heart disease, possible stroke, and reduces risks of diabetes. There are several on the market. Look for multivitamin that has 100% of daily allowances of the 16 core nutrients. With extra dose of illness busters -like lutein, lycopene, and selenium. Try and avoid extra iron this could lead a higher risk of heart conditions.

Eczema: Tips On How To Care For Your Skin

Eczema: Tips On How To Care For Your Skin
 by: Dr. Rita Louise

Eczema can best be described as a non-contagious skin condition, which is characterized by hot dry itchy skin, with symptoms that often fluctuate seasonally and even over the course of the day. Eczema typically begins in early childhood. Research indicates that eczema may be genetically determined and studies show that there is often a family history of allergies, asthma, eczema or hay fever. Children who experience eczema may also suffer from asthma or hay fever as well.
Like an allergy, eczema tends to flair up when exposed to certain triggers, especially mechanical irritants, allergens, emotional stress, heat and sweating. When exposed to an offending situation, inflammation producing cells come to surface of the skin and release chemicals, leaving the skin red, pealing and thickened. Sometimes tiny blisters form, rupture, weep and crust over.
Eczema most often appears in and round the creases of joints of the arms and legs and around trunk of the body. For some, it also emerges on their hands and on the sloes of their feet. Sufferers also experience an intense itching makes them want to scratch it, causing additional damage which can lead to bleeding and infection.
Solvents, chemicals, detergents, bleach, woolen clothing, skin care products that contain alcohol and certain soaps or fragrances are all considered mechanical irritant that can cause burning, itching or redness to the skin and bring about a flair-up. And while allergens, like food, pollens and pets, do not irritate the skin, they can also trigger a flair-up. The same holds true to emotional stress. Intense emotions such as anger and frustration can flair up symptoms. Many individuals with eczema also do not tolerate extremely hot or cold temperatures as well. High humidity can cause increased sweating, while low humidity can dry the skin.
Recommendations For Wellness
The key to controlling eczema is prevention. Avoid or reduce your exposure to things that can irritate your skin such as household cleaners, detergents, certain soaps and wool clothing.
Use a moisturizer on your skin every day to help keep it soft and flexible.
Don't scratch even if it itches! Scratching can further irritate the skin and can even cause the skin to break and crack, opening the door to infection.
Take the time to identify your triggers. This can help you to avoid or limit your exposure to the offending item even better. If you think a food item is causing your problems, talk to your doctor about getting an allergy test or try an elimination diet to help you identify the offending product.
Be sure to dry your hands completely after you wash them.
Wear gloves when your hands will be exposed to anything that can irritate them.
Learn to manage your stress through regular exercise, breathing techniques, biofeedback, meditation and yoga.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) has been shown to help reduce the inflammation, dryness and scaleness often associated with eczema. GLA can be found in evening primrose oil, borage oil and currant seed oil.
If your skin becomes infected, the herb Oregon grape has been used for hundreds of years to treat infections and a variety of skin problems.
Natures Sunshine's Golden Salve is a blend of herbs, oils and beeswax that sooths and moisturizes rough, chafed, chapped skin.
A homeopathic remedy for eczema may help relieve the itching and irritation associated with eczema and dermatitis of the skin and scalp.

How Working Out May Dry You Out

How Working Out May Dry You Out
 by: Dr. Patrick Flanagan

I am Dr Patrick Flanagan, and this is the latest edition of my Dr Health Secrets newsletter. I have worked out regularly for my entire life and from many years of experience, I have put together a little bit of information on working out and keeping hydrated.
Shake What Your Genetics Gave You
Yes, even I get the Victoria Secret catalog and cringe at the bevy of beauties who are strewn across the pages in napkin-sized underoos. And though I usually opt for walking in nature or doing floor exercises, I sometimes feel that need and desire to go to the gym and run myself into the ground for four straight miles on a treadmill, and like a hamster on one of those little metal wheels, I wonder, "Why is it that I am not going anywhere?"
In this fantasy, I peel myself from the machine, step onto the floor, and find myself lightheaded and somewhat disoriented. I wander around, aimlessly hoping that this strange feeling of confusion will soon pass as I stumble into walls and neighboring weight machines.
Sometimes it passes rather quickly, and other times, I am left in this strange fog for what feels like hours. What is this strange sensation that I, as well as many others, experience after working out? Well, it is mostly dehydration.
If I Only Had Some Water...
Consuming water while working out would seem to be a pretty common practice among the gym going type, and while many people can be seen with water bottles in hand, a large majority of those people don't actually drink enough water to maintain proper hydration.
According to Peter Bruno, M.D., who is the team physician for the New York Knicks, and Finish Line Physician for the Boston Marathon, constant sweating for over an hour decreases the total amount of blood volume in the body.
On average, a person can lose up to one liter of water per hour on a hot day. This lack of water causes your blood to thicken, making it harder for the blood to circulate, which in turn causes your blood pressure to drop. This then leads to that fabulous feeling of lightheaded confusion that so many of us have come to know and love.
Bruno says, and I quote, "You are losing blood volume, it is almost as if you are bleeding when you get dehydrated because the amount of blood you have available to deliver oxygen decreases."
Short-term side effects of moderate dehydration include headache, nausea, confusion, disorientation, muscle cramping, and so on and so forth. There are risks in staying within this level of moderate dehydration, such as intense muscle pain, and even muscle tearing.
I think most of us have pulled a groin muscle or two in our day, and I think that all of us can agree that it is not something we hope for on a frequent basis.
What's an Athlete To Do?
The best solution is for you to check in with yourself prior to, during, and after a workout. Ask yourself how your body feels and how it would feel with more fluids. In general, try to drink a bit more than you think and see how your body reacts. If you are tired, sore, or feeling weak, use that as an indication that you need more water...

The Truth About Omega 3

The Truth About Omega 3
 by: Dave Mcevoy

Since Dr Basant Puri, a consultant psychiatrist and senior lecturer at London's Imperial College MRI unit, released his findings on Omega 3 and its effect on brain function and depression, many studies have been performed regarding the beneficial effects of this fatty acid. Studies over the past two years have consistently confirmed that Omega 3, a substance lacking in today's "diet" is a key component in the brain's development and proper functioning.
The notion that Omega 3 was linked to depression and other mental illnesses came about based on studies conducted at Harvard University in 1999 on people with bipolar and a 1996 study by the Journal of the American Medical Association studying the prevalence of depression across ten countries. The Harvard study found that fish oil was an effective treatment for bipolar. The study conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association was expanded upon in 1998 when it was discovered that depression was lower in countries that consumed higher levels of fish.
Omega 3 As Part Of A Healthy Diet
Omega 3 is a substance found most commonly in fatty fish such as fresh salmon, tuna, mackerel, pilchards and sardines. Over the last 100 years the western diet has shifted radically to include far less fish and thus the Omega 3 fatty acid. During the same time depression is estimated to have increased up to 100 fold.
To maintain ideal health, the average person should consume five grams daily of essential fatty acids (divided between Omega 3 and Omega 6). As this is not likely to change at any point in the near future some recommendations have been laid out for those who choose to take Omega 3 supplements. These recommendations will be listed further below in the section titled, "Omega 3 Supplements".
Omega 3 And The Brain
While the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids can be noticed on many levels, the biggest breakthroughs documented have occurred in improved mental functions and health. Omega 3 has been reported to be effective in the treatment of depression. Numerous studies have indicated that during double-blind tests, patients suffering from depression who take Omega 3 over a placebo report significant benefits.
Similar results have been reported in the treatment of bipolar and schizophrenia. There are theories that Omega 3 could be used to treat other mental conditions such as attention deficit disorder, borderline personality disorder, dyslexia and cognitive impairment however at the time of this writing these beliefs are unsubstantiated by anything more than preliminary data.
Omega 3 And The Body
The main reported benefits of Omega 3 for the body occur in the heart. The American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish at least twice per week in order to reduce the likelihood of heart disease.
While research is still ongoing into the effects of these fatty acids on the heart, research to date has shown that they: decrease risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden cardiac death decrease triglyceride levels decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque lower blood pressure (slightly)
Additionally, Omega 3 has been reported effective as an anti-inflammatory. And according to an article by Judith Horstman for Arthritis Today, "There's strong evidence that fish oil supplements with omega-3 fatty acids can ease rheumatoid arthritis (RA) symptoms, help prevent Raynaud's syndrome spasms and possibly relieve some lupus symptoms.
There is some limited evidence that the reduction in Omega 3 in the average western diet can be a contributing factor to the rise in: asthma chronic fatigue syndrome cystic fibrosis osteoporosis prostate cancer
Omega 3 Supplements
Any good doctor or nutritionist will tell you that the best way to get any nutrient is to go right to the source and eat it through the foods they originate. In the case of Omega 3 this would most likely be in the form of fatty fish, flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil and soybean oil. That said, this is not always possible given the average westerner's diet and lifestyle. Additionally, for those suffering from sever depression or using Omega 3 to combat an existing condition, the amount contained in the foods we eat may not provide enough of this fatty acid. If this is the case then it is important to know what you are looking for.
The supplement should be high in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). EPA, along with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) are the two active ingredients in Omega 3. EPA is considered to be the therapeutic element. It is thus important to purchase a supplement higher in EPA than DHA.
Additional Notes
Due to the recent developments and study of Omega 3 and all of its potential health benefits, the majority of studies and information on it are preliminary and based on smaller test groups. Additional research is underway and should provide additional insight into how it works and exactly what its role is in the brain's functioning and development.
Currently additional studies are ongoing into the roll of Omega 3 in brain and nerve regeneration, depression, heart disease, arthritis, cancer, neck and back pain, stress and an assortment of other mental and physical conditions.

Omega 3 EPA: Nature.s Very Own Anti-Depressant

Omega 3 EPA: Nature's Very Own Anti-Depressant
 by: Dave Mcevoy

Since Dr Malcolm Peet, a consultant psychiatrist at Sheffield swallow court hospital released his findings about the effects of Ethyl Epa and its effects on people suffering from depression and low moods, many other studies have been performed using Ethyl Epa to help treat depression and related disorders. The vast majority of the studies that have been performed consistently confirmed that Ethyl Epa, a natural substance found in omega 3 fish oil, helps relieve depression and low moods.
The idea that high grade omega 3 EPA could be used to help combat depression and other related disorders came from the late Dr Horribin, who as early as the 1970s was a pioneer in lipid research involving the brain and central nervous system. Since the findings at Sheffield, studies have been conducted round the world, Harvard university 1999, London Hammersmith hospital 2001 and Israel Ben Gurion University 2002 to name but a few.
EPA As Part Of A Healthy Diet
EPA is part of the Omega 3 chain of ecosanoids and is most commonly found in fatty fish such as fresh salmon, mackerel, pilchards and sardines. Over the past 100 years the diet patterns of most people in the west has shifted dramatically to include far more hydrogenated oils and Trans fatty acids (bad fats) this is largely due to the increased consumption of fast food and ready made meals. Even people who think they eat a healthy diet consume way too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3.
Researchers have recently found that a diet high in Tran's fatty acids could affect the mood stabilizing hormones within the brain, this is thought to be due to the saturated fats slowing down the messaging system within the brain, should this happen then the onset of depression could occur.
How Does EPA Work?
While the benefits of high grade EPA have been well documented, the scientific community still don't know exactly how EPA works on the brain, one theory released by Dr Basant Puri is that it eases the passage of the signals over the tiny gaps in the brain called synapses. Another theory was that the high Grade Epa actually worked similar to lithium and had anti depressant properties of its own.
Until recently it was widely accepted in the medical community that once a human reached maturity that the adult brain could not grow anymore, in a recent paper just released by Dr Puri his findings show other wise. Dr Puri scanned a 21 year patient before treating him with high grade Pure Epa, after the course of treatment he rescanned the young man only to find that the grey matter of the brain had increased in size.
Omega 3 EPA And The Body
As well as EPA being very good for helping to balance mood it has other well documented effects on the body, these included:- Blood thinning properties Decrease risk of heart attack Decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque Slightly lower blood pressure
There is also some limited scientific evidence to show that high grade EPA has helped people suffering from:- Bipolar disorder PMS Chronic fatigue syndrome / ME Huntington's disease Fibromyalgia Obsessive compulsive disorder Schizophrenia ADHD ADD
Although more research needs to be done in these areas, the current evidence looks very promising.
EPA Versus DHA
Omega 3 fish oil contains another omega 3 nutrient called DHA, there is a currently a controversial argument as to which omega 3 nutrient is the more beneficial in dealing with depression and related disorders. This Argument is born from doctors who have used high grade Epa , Horribin, Puri and Peet They claim that the higher the ratio of Epa to Dha the more effective the results have been, just recently Dr Andrew Stoll has also come out in support of this theory.
EPA From Food
Any good doctor or nutritionist will tell you that the best way to get any nutrient is to eat a very balanced diet of the correct amount of carbohydrates , protein and omega essential fatty acids. In the case of Omega 3 epa this would be in the form of fish, unfortunately due to the high concentration levels of epa needed to obtain a therapeutic dose you would have to consume a large amount of oily fish daily and sadly due to the pollution levels found in our oceans today this is not advisable.
Omega 3 Epa can also be found in high doses in certain fish oil supplements, when choosing a fish oil supplement you should choose only the fish oil of the highest quality it should also have as high an EPA to DHA ratio as possible, for maximum therapeutic effect.
Conclusion
The large majority of scientific trails using high grade Omega 3 Ethyl Epa point towards this natural oil being very beneficial for many conditions. The argument about the DHA rages on and probably will until some solid scientific evidence is presented to us .In the mean time a product with a high EPA to DHA ratio is considered more beneficial by some leading UK doctors.

Top Ten Reasons To Supplement Your Diet With EPA Fish Oil

Top Ten Reasons To Supplement Your Diet With EPA Fish Oil
 by: david mcevoy

We are in the grip of an omega 3 fish oil wave, every day more studies are published to show just how important this nutrient is to us. Last week it was children with concentration problems this week it is children with autism. Here are some very good reasons why you should consider supplementing your diet with a high quality EPA fish oil supplement.
1. Most of the modern western diets contain way too much omega 6 in the form of breads and pasta, by supplementing your diet with an omega 3 fish oil supplement it will help to correct this imbalance of omega 6 to omega 3.
2. High grade omega 3 EPA fish oil has been shown to be very beneficial in the fight against depression. If your brain becomes clogged up with Tran's fatty acids (bad fats) it is possible that the whole messaging system within your brain could become sluggish, should this happen then onset of depression may occur
3 .In one recent study performed, people who supplemented there diet with EPA fish oil lost more weight than a placebo controlled group. This is thought to be due the cells releasing the bad fats, and the body then burning them as fuel.
4. High grade EPA fish oil helps with concentration and the ability to think clearly by aiding the passage of signals within the tiny gaps of the brain called synapses.
5. Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid and cannot be produced by the body. It is called an essential fatty acid because it is Essential for correct body balance and function of most vital organs and hormones.
6. Omega 3 high grade EPA fish oil has blood thinning properties similar to aspirin, this is very beneficial for people who are at risk from a heart attack. And other similar cardiac problems. Those with arrhythmia problems and those taking blood thinning medication should consult their GP.
7. The quality of your skin, hair and nails depends on your diet being rich in all the correct essential fatty acids, especially omega 3. The body needs these essential nutrients for optimal grow and rejuvenation.
8. The omega 3 we used to obtain from milk and meat has now been reduced drastically because the cows are mainly grain fed instead of grass fed, this has reduced the omega content in meat and milk to a very low level.
9. During pregnancy the unborn baby takes all the nutrients from the mother, this includes the omega 3 nutrient DHA. If after the birth of the child these correct nutrients are not replaced then the onset of post natal depression could occur.
10.Western diets can be lazy and full of the wrong kind of fats i.e. trans fats. Therefore we are not giving our bodies the correct balance of omega 3 essential fatty acids. The body will then start to show signs of this imbalance:
Dry eyes
Dry skin
Chicken skin on the back of upper arms
Brittle nails
Frequent infections
Poor wound healing
Low moods
Mood swings

Fear and Anxiety: They Are No Match For Hypnosis

Fear and Anxiety: They Are No Match For Hypnosis
 by: Lyta Humphris

Many people struggle each day with fear and anxiety. We're not talking about being afraid that you didn't pass your last test or anxiety over a job interview. Anxiety and fear become deep rooted elements of a person's life and can create havoc in relationships and make it impossible to function on a day to day basis.
Anxiety often creates a snowball effect of emotions that take place when something, even the smallest thing, goes wrong in a person's life. For example, for someone struggling with anxiety, even the minutest intrusion can throw his or her entire day out of line.
Let's say you are getting ready for work and your cat throws up on your carpet. Automatically your mind starts racing. This means you are going to be late for work, which means your boss is going to think you are irresponsible, which means you are never going to get the raise you need to buy your first home which means you are going to be stuck in an apartment forever and your whole financial life is ruined. In an instant cat vomit is equated to a destroyed life for someone dealing with anxiety.
Fear Is Often Related To Anxiety.
Individuals often become afraid of things that have led them to anxiety in the past. The individual in the above example may never look at cats the same way again. Fear leads to the avoidance of things that people fear and can create havoc in their lives such as the example given above. People may become phobic of snakes, spiders, clowns, chickens and many other things.
A New Approach
Perhaps you are someone struggling with fear and anxiety. You may have tried different methods including counseling and anti-anxiety medications to make it go away but nothing has worked. You may have spent hours in the self-help section of your local bookstore with no luck.
You still have one more option available to try and that is hypnosis. No, hypnosis does not mean that you are put into a trance by a freaky man with a pocket watch. The problem with basic therapy is that it simply uses the conscious portion of your brain. The conscious part is the portion that controls and assists you with day-to-day thought processes.
The purpose of hypnotism is to relax the conscious level of the brain and subdue it so that the subconscious portion is allowed to come forward. What is the subconscious? The subconscious mind is that portion of your brain that takes care of your automatic day-to-day business such as riding a bicycle. You have done it so many times that conscious though is no longer required for these tasks.
Once the subconscious is accessible to the hypnotist, he or she will work with you to rewire your subconscious. For example, if you are afraid of spiders, a hypnotist can help you relate spiders to something light and funny instead of something to be afraid of. Over time, you will learn that you are significantly bigger than your fears and can overcome them all through hypnotherapy!

Warming Up Yes! It Is Essential

Warming Up Yes! It Is Essential
 by: Leonard Rogalski

I know what you're thinking. Warming up is for sissies, and wimps. You wouldn't be caught dead on a treadmill or exercise bike. You're here for one reason-- to move big iron and get massive.
Well what if I told you that warming up could help you lift heavier, which in turn could help you get bigger if you are not over training, eating enough protein and getting enough rest. And I'm convinced it will help prevent injuries, provided you don't do something stupid after you warm up like trying to squat 300 when you can barely get ten reps with 100.
How will warming up help me lift heavier?
Lets take barbell curls for example. If you start off with your heaviest weight which let's say is 100 pounds. You, for one thing, will have to spend some of your energy just getting into the groove. I'm sure other people will have different opinions of what that means, but to me it means getting mentally into the lift and deciding what tempo I'm going to use. Am I going to do slower reps emphasizing the negative portion of the lift or am I going to do my reps a little more explosively. (Hint: All this should/could be decided during the warm up based on how strong you're feeling on that particular day or on how mentally you are into your training on that day.)
But if you start out with an empty bar and do say two sets of 10-20 reps and then move up from there in whatever increments you choose you may find that you are feeling strong on that day so you're going to try and do 102.5 pounds for 8 solid reps. You may only get 6, but that's how you build a big, strong body, by slowly, (I can't emphasize SLOWLY enough) increasing the weight and/or reps on the basic exercises.
How does warming up help to prevent injuries?
Ever see a glass blower? When the glass is hot they can bend and shape it into any design they want. Of course we all know what happens to glass when it cools.
Think of your body in the same way. When you lift weights without warming up your muscles and tendons are like cooled glass. However when you warm up before hitting the heavy stuff your muscles and tendons are like the hot glass. Now don't misunderstand me you can still get injured even if you warm up thoroughly, but are a lot less likely too.
THE ROUTINE:
Before I get started on the exercises that comprise the warm-up I would like to explain why you won't find any descriptions of how the exercises are supposed to be done. I've left them out for two reasons. One is because I think that most of the people reading this will have at least a couple of years (if not a lot more) of training under their belts and will already know how to do the exercises.
Secondly, if you are new to bodybuilding I would suggest you hire a competent personal trainer to teach you the basics. Please take your time, ask around, and find a good competent, trainer. Don't be fooled if they tell you they are certified, that doesn't mean they know what they are doing. The best thing you can do for yourself, in my opinion, is to learn how to do the exercises correctly in the beginning. This way you won't have to break an old habit and then learn a new one. Not to mention the fact that you will be a lot less likely to get hurt if you learn the proper way of performing the exercises in the beginning!
After years of working out this is the warm up routine I've found that works for me.
10-15 minutes of some sort of movement, my favorite is the treadmill. The idea here is to get your body to the point where it feels warm. You don't need to be sweating profusely.
Next we move dumbbell laterals. I do them standing, but you can do them seated on a bench. I do two sets, I don't count reps, I just go until I feel I've done enough. Do them slowly and in complete control. Two sets of 10-20 should be enough. Don't be afraid to go really light on these. I've hurt my shoulders a lot over the years, so I use one pound dumbbells.
I can hear a lot of you laughing, saying to yourself I'd never be caught dead using one pound dumbbells. Maybe, not now, but trust me if you ever hurt your shoulders they'll be your best friends-in the gym that is. Remember you can never start too light, but you can always start too heavy.
Next up are shrugs. Yep you guessed it, it's two sets of shrugs, with the 1 pound dumbbells. Again I don't count reps, but two sets of 10-20 reps will probably be sufficient. Remember this is a warm up, so do them slow and in control.
From the shrugs we move to good mornings. I have an old hollow EZ curl bar that I use for these. Again it's two sets, this time shoot for 20 reps on both sets. Do them slow and don't bounce at the bottom.
Next we move on to the abs. I like two sets of swill ball crunches. If you train at home and don't have one, or your gym doesn't, do two sets of 20 reps of whatever you like--sit-ups (if they don't aggravate your lower-back), leg raises, etc.
VARIOUS POINTS:
That's the warm-up. As far as I'm concerned, your abs, shoulders, lower back, and traps, are involved in some degree in everything you do in the gym, so they need to be treated as such. Some of you might be shouting hey what about the hip/glute/leg area. Good point. But I feel that the 10-15 minutes of light jogging or walking or biking that starts this routine is sufficient enough to warm-up that area.
This is just a basic warm-up. If you feel two sets of an exercise isn't enough add another. Everyone is different. As I alluded to in the previous paragraph, for me that's enough warm-up for my lower body, but if it is not enough for you add two sets of bodyweight only squats to the routine.
Even though you went through the routine above, you should still start light and pyramid the weight up on any exercise. Just to give you an example even though they are relatively warm, I still start my dumbbell shoulder presses with the one pound dumbbells and move up from there.
CONCLUSION:
Don't let your ego prevent you from warming-up. Once your hurt a part of your body, it never feels perfect again. So if you're not hurt, warm up so you'll stay that way! And if you are hurt give this routine a try. Don't be afraid to put your own individual spin on it. You won't regret it. Keep Training!

Green Tea And Weight Loss

Green Tea And Weight Loss
 by: Kathryn O'Neill

There's recently been a LOT in the weight loss news concerning green tea.
Green tea's weight loss effects have been causing more and more people to start sipping the ancient Japanese brew.
But just how does green tea help you lose weight? And does it really work or is it all just hype? This article gives you the real facts about drinking green tea to lose weight.
Advantages of Drinking Green Tea for Weight Loss:
1) Green tea revs up your metabolism
A study reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a metabolism 'boost').
The researchers also concluded that that over a 24-hour period, green tea extract increases the metabolic rate by 4%. These effects are probably due to the high concentrations of catechin polyphenols found in green tea. These work to help intensify levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis (the rate at which your body burns calories).
2) Green tea inhibits fat absorption and helps glucose regulation
Experts tell us that the catechins in green tea help to inhibit the movement of glucose into fat cells. Green tea may also act as al glucose regulator. It helps to slow the rise in blood sugar after a meal. This prevents high insulin spikes (lots of insulin promotes fat storage) and the subsequent fat storage.
3) Green tea may help reduce appetite
Scientists at the University of Chicago found that green tea caused rats to lose up to 21 percent of their body weight. Rats injected with a green tea extract lost their appetites and consumed up to 60 percent less food after seven days of daily injections. This may have something to do with the blood sugar regulating effects of green tea.
4) Green tea can help you save calories on your morning brew.
We are a nation hooked on our java. Be it the regular double-cream, double-sugar standard or that mocha, dappa, frappucinno, the calories we ingest just to get our morning caffeine is wreaking havoc on our waistlines.
If you want to save mega-calories in the morning but still get your caffeine fix, try substituting green tea for coffee. Or have a green tea in the afternoon instead of that 700 calorie mocha-chillate dream. You'll definitely notice the difference in your waistline after a few weeks.
So there are 4 ways that green tea can help you with weight loss. But how much do you actually have to drink to get these amazing metabolism boosting effects?
Experts vary but the general consensus seems to be that 3 – 5 cups of green tea per day is optimal. Doing this can help you burn an extra 70 calories per day which amounts to 7 pounds per year. Pretty good for not exercising or cutting calories, right?
However, 3 – 5 cups can be a lot for some people, so you might also want to consider green tea extract, green tea pills or a green tea patch.
Disadvantages of Drinking Green Tea For Weight Loss:
#1) Green tea is not a magic bullet
While some people will tell you that green tea is the be-all-end-all for weight loss success, I think the keyword here is balance. You're not going to eat 5000 calories a day, drink a cup of green tea and make it all go away – it just isn't going to happen. A healthy diet and increased exercise will go a long way in helping you lose weight and keep it off.
#2) Be cautious of the caffeine if you have health problems
For some people that have heart troubles, high blood pressure or stimulant sensitivities, the caffeine in green tea may not be the best idea. If you're worried about the caffeine from green tea, try taking green tea extract. Most green tea extract is made from decaffeinated green tea so you can still get the weight loss benefits without the caffeine.
If you think the caffeine may be a problem, make sure to consult your doctor before starting green tea for weight loss. Also make sure to consult your doctor before starting green tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Bottom Line: Green tea helps you with weight loss by boosting your metabolic rate, regulating your blood sugar, suppressing your appetite and giving you something else besides that high calorie, high sugar coffee beverage to drink in the morning. While it's not the magic bullet, it can definitely give you a boost in weight loss and in your overall health!

Do You Know The History Of Trampolines As Exercise Equipment ?

Do You Know The History Of Trampolines As Exercise Equipment ?
 by: Jeb Taylor

The manufactured trampoline, as we know it today, wascreated by two men, George Nissen and Larry Griswold.Around 1935, Griswold, then the assistant gymnastics coachat the University of Iowa, and Nissen, a tumbler on theUniversity of Iowa gymnastics team, "made regular jaunts toBloomington, Illinois where numerous circus people hadtheir winter homes.
Among them were the "Flying Wards", some of the finesttrapeze performers in the world. Griswold and Nissen workedout with them at the local YMCA, and frequently helped themmake or mend their large trapeze nets. Nissen remembers thehours they spent in the basement of the YMCA, threading thelong cords of the nets, using large javelin-head needles. This experience was one of several that led them to theidea of creating a trampoline.
One day, with the help of the wrestling coach at theUniversity of Iowa, Griswold and Nissen bolted together anangle iron frame. A piece of canvas, in which they hadinserted grommets along each side, was then attached to theframe by using springs. This was the first trampoline.
Since Nissen was still training for tumbling, they decidedto move the trampoline to a YMCA camp where he was aninstructor. There, during his free time, Nissen used it forhis tumbling training. Immediately, he found that thechildren loved it. This was the first realization that thetrampoline could be more than a piece of equipment to usewhen performing, or seriously training. It was somethingthat many others could enjoy.
In 1942, Griswold and Nissen decided to formalize theirsmall operation of making trampolines. They created theGriswold-Nissen Trampoline & Tumbling Company, and historywas made.
But where does the name "Trampoline" come from? "Eltrampolin" means diving board, in Spanish. George Nissen, the co-creator of the competitive style trampoline, heardthe word on a performance tour in Mexico in the late1930's. He liked the sound of it, and decided to Anglicizethe spelling and call his bouncing rig a Trampoline, a termhe later registered as a trademark.

Cialis . The Latest in ED Medicine

Cialis – The Latest in ED Medicine
 by: John M. Davidson

Erectile Dysfunction is defined as the consistent inability to attain and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. ED affects an estimated 189 million men worldwide. Experts believe that 80 percent to 90 percent of ED cases are related to a physical or medical condition, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and prostate cancer treatment, while 10 percent to 20 percent are due to psychological causes. In many cases, however, both psychological and physical factors contribute to the condition.
Lilly ICOS LLC, a joint venture between ICOS Corporation and Eli Lilly and Company, developed Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. ICOS Corporation, a biotechnology company headquartered in Bothell, Washington, is dedicated to bringing innovative therapeutics to patients. ICOS is working to develop treatments for serious unmet medical conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, pulmonary arterial hypertension, cancer and inflammatory diseases.
When an erection goes limp, you have PDE5 to thank . Specialized penis tissue produces a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in response to sexual stimulation. The more cGMP available, the more durable the erection. Cialis inhibits the PDE5 enzyme, preserving cGMP levels, therefore aiding erection viability and durability. Cialis (tadalafil), an oral treatment for erectile dysfunction, is a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). Tadalafil has the empirical formula C 22 H 19 N 3 O 4 representing a molecular weight of 389.41.
We all know that Cialis isn't the first oral treatment medicine for erectile dysfunction. It came after Viagra and Levitra. However both Viagra and Levitra works for up to 5-6 hours, while Cialis gives you 36 hours to enjoy sex. All three drugs should take about 30-40 minutes to take action. No longer does an erection or sexual activity have to be rushed. If you Expect to go to a Bar and meet a girl, you probably wouldn't want to take Viagra or Levitra and get a really hard erection after 40 minutes, because you don't know how things would go, Instead you can take Cialis before you go out, and you should be on the safe side of the erection, even if you decide to spend the night.
To conclude, Viagra and Levitra would probably be better to one certain sexual encounter with your wife, while Cialis is a better choice for a whole weekend of sex, or for a night at some pick-up bars, seeking random sex partners, without the certainty of Sex. The Fountain of Youth & Your Hormones

The Fountain of Youth & Your Hormones
by: Jay Chatterjee & Roshmi Raychaudhuri

Everyone has heard of the mythical "Fountain of Youth", but very few realize that it actually does exist. And even fewer realize that it exists inside every one of us. Yes, it's there right within you, just waiting to be activated !!
Juan Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer sailed around the Florida coast in search of the legendary "Fountain of Youth".....the secret to being young again forever. That was five hundred years ago, more or less. Since then modern day 'explorers', in the form of researchers, have been continuing the quest for the secrets to attain eternal youth These researchers have discovered that at the core of the fountain of youth is the body's hormonal or neuro endocrine system, the collective name assigned to the glands and organs that manufacture hormones within our bodies.
Aging is a process that happens to all of us. Usually around thirty to thirty-five years of age, we begin to notice the first telltale signs of aging, the strands of gray hair, the deepening of expression lines (the pre-cursor to wrinkles), the slight sagging of facial features, the gradual loss of skin elasticity as collagen formation declines. As the years roll by, this aging process continues inexorably - stiffer joints, dimmer vision, loss of taste buds, gray hair, less libido! As we see the same thing happening to our friends and family we accept it as natural and inevitable. We start to accept our declining faculties as being nature's way, and start thinking of ourselves as old.The change in mental perspective further accelerates the process. And, as we look in the mirror, year after year, we gradually begin to look, feel and act progressively older, our mindset reflecting our mirror image.
Today, technology and medical advances have made it possible to live much longer, leading to an aging of the population - there are many more 'seniors' in our society than ever before. In fact, average longevity has gone up all over the world since the beginning of the 20th century. In the U.S longevity has increased by as much as 25 years,
However, regrettably, the factor that has not changed is the number of years one has to live with age-related disability. It is still an average of ten years for most of us. Can we minimize, or eliminate completely this period of decrepitude from our lives? There is no question that each one of us, man and woman, would like to live our sixties, seventies and eighties with looks, health and vitality intact. Nor do we like the idea of losing any of our faculties or senses. The fountain of youth was seen to be the answer, making it a life or death (literally) quest since time immemorial.....Juan Ponce de Leon et al....and it remains as important today. People stop at nothing in their attempts to combat aging, and to drink from the fountain of youth. So much so, that it has become somewhat of a chimera. There are diets designed to combat and reverse aging, cardio-vascular exercises do the same, the brain is kept young by 'challenging' it, viagra promises peak sexual performance, HRT promises relief from pre and post menopausal problems, cosmetic companies produce moisturizers and creams to build collagen,....one can go on and on!!!
In varying degrees, they all work! But think about HOW they work! Diets and cardio-vascular exercises work by regulating the body's consumption of energy. Known as metabolism, it is a complex interaction of chemical conversions that take place continually in order to generate energy and keep the body at optimum level. Control of the entire process lies in the hormonal (neuroendocrine) system.
The challenge element perks up secretions of the hormone adrenaline...the body's age-old response to any form of stress or threat is production of higher doses. The skin is kept hydrated by secretions of oil and sweat-producing hormones, and the entire process of sexuality and reproduction is hormone-induced, and starts from the hormonal (neuroendocrine) system. And so, through course of diets, exercises, creams and supplements you manage to keep your body and mind in peak condition. What happens when you get a bout of the 'flu'? Without the help of the thymus and your immune system your body may just pack it in !!
The hormonal system has a finger in every pie! Does the concept seem rather esoteric? Do you think I am overplaying the role of the endocrine glands?
Consider the facts. Sift through reports on the most current research going on in this field. Much of the anti-aging experimentation being conducted in various laboratories around the world, is connected with ingestion of hormonal supplements. HGH (human growth hormone) and DHEA, both popular experimental therapies being used at present, are nothing but hormones. And without a doubt they produce benefits, even though it is probably too early to determine if they produce any their attendant side effects.
Then again there is much research connected to the use of release factors or 'releasers', whereby, instead of ingesting supplements, one would ingest releasers, which would activate the glands into releasing hormones. Such experiments are still at an early stage, and not much is known about the attendant side effects, if any.
In fact, this very principle of hormonal flow seems to have been known to the Himalayan people in ancient times, and forms the basis of the Tibetan yoga rejuvenation and anti aging technique. They seem to have way ahead of us in their knowledge. They knew, 4000 years ago, how to push the button that would cause the body to produce its own natural releasers, rather than rely on artificial synthetic ones. This, then, is the knowledge made public by the Tibetan rejuvenation yoga technique.
