Natural Skin Care

Natural Skin Care
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

You work hard to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. You know that organic foods can help you avoid ingesting nasty hormones and chemicals but did you know that these toxins are creeping into your system in other ways? Your moisturizers, eye creams, and make up may seem harmless, but check out the labels and you'll find a laundry list of tongue-twisting ingredients, many of which could be hazardous to your health. In a recent survey, conducted by Health, eighty three percent of responding consumers indicated that they would rather use all natural body products. The skin care industry is responding to this demand. The natural and organic skin care product sector has seen a growth of thirty nine percent over the last year. Some of these products may claim to be all-natural, while still containing a slew of chemicals and toxins. Here's what you need to know about natural skin care and how to determine if the product you are using is free of harmful chemicals.
Why Choose Natural Skin Care Products?
There is approximately six pounds of skin on your body which provides a porous membrane into your system. Dirt, dust, pollutants, and other environmental pollutants enter the body through the skin, providing a more significant gateway to your system than food. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that 884 chemicals used in personal care products and cosmetics are known to be toxic. And a recent Canadian study in Pediatric Drugs found cosmetic and personal care products as the most common cause of unintentional poisonings of kids under six.
The chemicals and toxins found in most commercial skin care products also have a detrimental effect on the environment, although this effect is just beginning to be understood. In March, a team of US Geological Survey scientists showed that a variety of chemicals from personal care products were among 95 wastewater contaminants found in US waterways.
Why poison yourself and the environment with toxic chemicals and pollutants? Natural skin care products are healthier for you, for your skin, and for the environment. But many products may claim to be all-natural while still containing a number of harmful ingredients. Make sure you read and understand the product label to ensure that the product your using is as natural as it claims to be.
Reading the Ingredients Label
Organic personal care manufacturing needs strict standards and enforcement in order to be effective. Currently, some manufacturers claim their products are organic merely as a marketing gimmick. One look at their products ingredients clearly suggests otherwise. Only by tying organic beauty care closely to the National Organic Program standards can the "lifestyle" marketed by the manufacturers represent the values at the core of organic agriculture.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies cosmetics into 13 categories, but it does not regulate them. According to the FDA, "A cosmetic manufacturer may use any ingredient or raw material and market the final product without government approval." Seven toxins are banned, but many more known toxins and carcinogens are allowed in cosmetic formulations. Less than one percent of the FDA's budget is for the evaluation of skin care products.
Many commercial skin care products have been regularly found to contain toxic chemicals. Surprisingly, most personal care products are not tested for health and safety. And because the FDA does not regulate skin care manufacturers, questionable ingredients often make their way into their formulas. These ingredients may seem harmless in the short-term, but their chemical components are stored in the fatty tissues of the body where they accumulate and magnify over time.
Cosmetics and personal care products are marketed based on the quality and content of their formulas. Many products claim to be filled with expensive vitamins, oils, and perfumes. Others claim to utilize an all-natural formula. But how can you be sure that the products you buy actually contain the ingredients they claim to have? Read the label, right? But unless you happen to be a scientist or chemist, the ingredient list on most cosmetics and personal care products will look like a long list of mind-numbing, tongue-twisting names.
This is where natural and organic skin care products should stand out. If a product claims to be all natural, its ingredients should be easily recognizable as natural components. Also, the ingredients should be listed in descending order with the most prominent factors listed first. Scrutinize the first several listings in the product to be sure that they are the natural ingredients you are looking for. If a skin care product contains an ingredient that you are unsure about, write down it's name and do a little research. A quick online search should reveal it's true nature. As a consumer, you need to be on the look out for chemicals and toxic ingredients that can be harmful to your skin and your body. You would not even think about eating a food that contained chemicals or cancer causing agents. Don't let these toxins enter your system through your beauty product either!

Natural Skin Care Products – Toxic Chemicals
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

How can you tell when a product that claims to be natural, really is? You might try reading the label, but unless you are a chemist, this may get a little confusing. Ingredients in skin care and beauty products are listed by the chemical names. An all-natural product should stand out from the rest because it should contain more easily recognizable ingredients. But if you want to be sure, you should carefully scrutinize the label and research any ingredients that you are unsure about. Here are a few in particular to avoid:
1,4-dioxane: This carcinogen is found in many cosmetics as a by-product of other chemical combinations. Products that use Ethoxylated surfactants as foaming agents or emulsifiers often produce 1,4-doixane in the manufacturing process. This chemical is considered toxic if it is inhaled, absorbed through the skin or ingested.
Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): This drying agent is a common ingredient in many cosmetic products. When used directly on the skin, it strips off the outer most protective layer, exposing the body to bacteria, fungus, molds, and other toxins. It is derived from petroleum and may promote brown spots or premature aging.
Anionic Surfactants: surfactants are used in about 90% of foaming personal care products. They are also used in car washes, garage floor cleaners, and as engine degreasers. Common anionic surfactants include: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS), Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES), Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Sodium Cocoyl Sarcosinate, Potassium Coco Hydrolysed Collagen, TEA (Triethanolamine) Lauryl Sulfate, TEA (Triethanolamine) Laureth Sulfate, Lauryl or Cocoyl Sarcosine, Disodium Oleamide Sulfosuccinate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, and Disodium Dioctyl Sulfosuccinate. Avoid all of these ingredients if they are on the label.
Cationic Surfactants: These surfactants are commonly used in hair conditioning products as they have anti-static properties. However, they are synthetic, irritating to hair follicles, and toxic. Long-term use can cause hair to become dry and brittle. Common cationic surfactants include Stearalkonium chloride, Benzalkonium chloride, Cetrimonium chloride, Cetalkonium chloride, and Lauryl dimonium hydrolysed collagen.
Chloromethylisothiazolinone and Isothiazolinone: these two harmful chemicals can be corrosive to the eyes and skin. Long term exposure can cause permanent eye damage and third degree burns to skin. They can be fatal if ingested and they can cause damage to the mucous membranes of the lungs if inhaled.
DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (triethanolamine): These chemicals are often used in personal care cleansers to adjust the pH of the formula. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation, dryness, and toxicity if used over long periods. These known carcinogens are already restricted in Europe but they may still be found in the formulas of American and Asian cosmetics.
Diazolidinyl urea and DMDM Hydantoin: These chemicals contain formaldehyde, a toxic carcinogen, and it can cause dermatitis, burning, irritation of the mucous membranes, inflammation, and watering of the eyes.
Ethoxylated surfactants: These surfactants are commonly used in cosmetic formulas as foaming agents, emulsifiers, and humectants. They may be listed on the ingredient label as "PEG", "polyethylene", "polyethylene glycol", "polyoxyethylene", "-eth-", or "-oxynol." These chemicals form 1,4-dioxane (a known carcinogen) as a byproduct in the manufacturing process.
FD&C Color Pigments: These synthetic color pigments are made from coal tar. They contain heavy metal salts that leave toxic byproducts on the skin. These chemicals have been tested on animals and found to cause cancer.
Formaldehyde: This is another cancer causing agent that is commonly found in commercial make-up products. It can cause allergic reactions, headaches, and chronic fatigue.
Imidazolidinyl urea: This chemical releases another harmful chemical, formaldehyde, as a byproduct in the manufacturing process. It may be listed under the trade name Germall 115.
Lanolin: Lanolin is used in many commercial cosmetic formulas, and it is often considered harmless. However, it is obtained from the wool of sheep and is therefore contaminated with the pesticide DDT unless it is obtained from organic sources.
Mineral Oil: Also called liquid parrafinum, mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum that coats the skin like plastic. It disrupts the skin's natural ability to purge itself of toxins, slows down cell function and can cause premature aging. Mineral oil can also be found in paraffin wax, paraffin oil and petrolatum.
Nitrosating Agents: Chemicals that cause nitrosamine contamination have been found in laboratory tests to cause cancer. Nitrosamines can be found in the following chemical ingredients: 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol, Cocoyl Sarcosine, DEA compounds, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Formaldehyde, Hydrolysed Animal Protein, Lauryl Sarcosine, MEA compounds, Quaternium-7, 15, 31, 60, etc, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, and TEA compounds.
Paraben preservatives (methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl): These chemicals are often used in cosmetic formulas to inhibit microbial formation and extend the shelf life of the make-up products. They are commonly used in commercial applications even though they are known to be highly toxic and to cause allergic reactions and skin rashes.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) compounds: This petroleum product is used in commercial cleaners to break up grease and in spray on oven cleaners. Over time, this chemical can cause premature aging when used in personal care products.
Propylene/Butylene Glycol: This chemical compound is considered so toxic by the EPA that it mandates that its workers wear protective equipment when handling it. It is a petroleum product that penetrates the skin easily and can cause brain, liver, and kidney malfunctions. This ingredient is often found in stick deodorants where it can cause acute and chronic health hazards.
Rancid Natural Emollients: Creams and other commercial cosmetics made from refined vegetable oils contain harmful transfatty acids. Polyunsaturated oils can also oxidize quickly, causing free-radical damage to the skin and premature aging. They are also missing the essential nutrients, fatty acids, and vitamins that help protect and moisturize the skin.
Silicone derived emollients: Like other emollients, these products coat the skin like plastic wrap, and disrupt the skin's ability to breathe and release toxins. They can accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes and promote the development of tumors. Common silicone derived emollients include Dimethicone, Dimethicone Copolyol, and Cyclomethicone.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES): When combined with other ingredients, these chemicals form nitrosating agents and have a carcinogenic effect on the body. Be especially wary of semi-natural products that claim to be derived from coconut oil.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS): These chemicals can alter the immune system and cause damage to the eyes, digestive system, nervous system, lungs, and skin. They are commonly found in foaming personal care products. And may be listed as ingredients on semi-natural products that claim to come from coconut oil.
Stearalkonium Chloride: Originally developed as a fabric softener, this chemical is often found in hair conditioners and creams. They are toxic chemicals that can cause allergic reactions on contact.
Toluene: This chemical can be particularly dangerous if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Aspiration can cause chemical pneumonitis, a fatal disorder. It is highly flammable in both liquid and vapor form and it may affect the liver, kidneys, nervous system, and blood. Overexposure can cause fatigue, confusion, headache, dizziness, or numbness. Severe overexposure can cause coma and death. Exposure to toulene can also affect the proper development of a growing fetus.

Acne Scars

Acne Scars
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

Acne is an inflammation of the skin that affects people from every country and every culture around the world. In the US, acne is predominantly thought of as a teenage dilemma, as more than eighty percent of teens and preteens will develop some form of acne. However, the condition certainly affects a large number of adults and even infants. The scientific name for the condition is acne vulgaris because acne usually strikes in plainly visible locations such as the face, neck, chest and back. There are various types of acne that range in annoyance, severity, and healing time. The most severe type of acne may even lead scars that if not treated properly, may be visible for a lifetime. If you or a loved one is troubled by severe acne, here's what you need to know about acne scars and what you need to do to avoid and care for them.
How Does Acne Form?
Contact with an oily substance such as mineral oil, vegetable oil, or petroleum is a potential cause of acne, as is the use of certain medication and steroids. However, acne is most often cause by the secretion of androgens. Acne is also aggravated by milk or dairy products, red meat and fast food. Androgens are sex hormones that are initially secreted at the onset of puberty. They are male hormones but they are secreted by females as well. Androgens stimulate the production of oil from the skin's oil glands. Acne occurs when these overactive oil glands become blocked, causing the oil to build up in the gland and swell. A bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes normally colonizes this swollen gland causing the development of inflammation and pus. In particularly severe cases, the glands may burst into the skin and produce cysts.
Types Of Acne
Acne blemishes are categorized into four grades, ranging from mild to very severe.
Grade I: Mild acne falls into this category. People with grade I acne generally have blackheads and whiteheads but pimples are not present.
Grade II: The condition is considered moderate acne when blackheads, whiteheads, and small pimples are present, but they are confined to the face and the inflammation they cause is minimal.
Grade III: Severe acne includes blackheads, whiteheads, and deeper pimples with more pronounced swelling.
Grade IV: acne is considered very severe when it occurs on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, and back. Pustules and deeper cysts occur with very severe acne and scarring may result if the condition is not cared for properly.
Preventing Acne Scars
The most important rule for acne sufferers to remember is that you should never pick or squeeze acne blemishes. This can lead to the spread of acne and the development of acne scars. Instead, there are a number of herbal, homeopathic, and traditional formulas that can be used to treat acne and prevent the development of acne scars. Herbs work naturally with the body to reduce acne blemishes and prevent the development of acne scars. Echinacea and poke root are often used for their anti-inflammatory properties and red clover may be beneficial for its estrogenic action. Witch hazel has excellent astringent properties and may be very effective on acne.
Relieving Acne Scars
Acupuncture: Stagnant of Chi in the channels of the face is said to be the cause of acne. Acupuncture performed on these points of the face may help relieve acne, and prevent the development of acne scars.
Surgery: In moderate to severe cases of acne, doctors may use surgery to open up the blemishes and remove blackheads and whiteheads. Unlike medication treatments, the effects of acne surgery are usually more immediate. And surgery is also effective in reducing the development and visibility of acne scars.
Cleaning the intestinal Tract: Acne can be a by-product of a filthy intestinal tract and colon. In most cases when the colon is clean the acne will go away. I recommend the intestinal cleanser Oxy-Powder.
Other remedies include the skin rejuvenation program including 3 products: Oxy-Skin, Oxy-Zap and a strong Aloe Vera concentrate available at www.acne-answers.org. These products should help prevent acne scarring.

Acne Medications

Acne Medications
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

Acne is an annoying skin condition that affects people of every age, gender, and race. Few skin conditions are as bothersome and disturbing as acne. The scientific name for the condition is acne vulgaris because acne usually strikes in plainly visible locations such as the face, neck, chest and back. Acne is an age-old problem that has likely been plaguing people for centuries. But there are numerous treatment methods available for this bothersome condition. Read on to learn more about acne, and the herbal, homeopathic, and traditional medications used to treat it.
What is Acne?
Acne is an inflammation of the skin that can be caused by a number of factors. Contact with an oily substance such as mineral oil, vegetable oil, or petroleum is a common cause of acne, as is the use of certain medication, steroids, on the contraceptive pill. However, acne is most often cause by the secretion of androgens. Androgens are sex hormones that are initially secreted at the onset of puberty. They are male hormones but they are secreted by females as well. Androgens stimulate the production of oil from the skin's oil glands. Acne occurs when these oil glands become overactive and the exit from the gland is blocked, causing the oil to build up in the gland and swell. A bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes normally colonizes this swollen gland causing the development of inflammation and pus. In particularly severe cases, the glands may burst into the skin and produce cysts.
Over ninety percent of acne patients respond to acne medication, although the treatment may need to be continued for months or even years. Here are a few of the common herbal, homeopathic, and traditional medications that can be used to treat acne.
Acne Medications
Herbal Medications: Herbs such as chamomile, lavender, juniper, bergamot, dandelion root, and burdock root can be used to reduce toxicity and improve the overall condition of the skin. Echinacea and poke root are often used for their anti-inflammatory properties and red clover may be beneficial for its estrogenic action. Witch hazel has excellent astringent properties and may be very effective on acne. I recommend the skin rejuvenation program at the www-acne-answers.org website.
Homeopathic Remedies: For patients with pustules and blind boils, especially on the face, neck, and back, may be helped by Kali brom. Taking selenium internally is often used for acne sufferers with oily skin, blackheads, and pustules. And hepar sulph. is typically used for patients who suffer from pustules that are painful and filled with yellow pus.
Nonprescription Medications can be toxic to the skin over a period of time. (Not Recommended for Use).
Benzoyl peroxide is a common acne treatment. It is an exfoliant and therefore helps to remove dead skin cells from the skin's surface. It also prevents bacteria from multiplying on the skin. It may come in gel, cream, or lotion form. And it may also be found in combination with sulphur which is another exfoliation agent. Benzoyl peroxide helps to prevent the development of new blemishes and clear up ones that are already present. It needs to be used on a daily basis and may initially cause itching, redness, and dryness. Skin will slowly show improvement over time with continued usage.
Salicyclic Acid: The chemical is very effective in the treatment of blackheads. It can loosen and soften thick, clogged pores. However, it does little to prevent the development of new blemishes.
Retinoic Acid: This medication may be used alone or in combination with a benzoyl peroxide preparation. Retinoic acid is derived from vitamin A, which is an important nutrient in the maintenance of healthy skin. Vitamin A reduces the blockage of oil glands and is therefore very useful in the treatment of whiteheads and blackheads. It can cause itchiness and redness, especially if the skin is exposed to strong amounts of sunlight. As with benzoyl peroxide, retinoic acid needs to be used for an extended period of time (at least six months) and it may be several weeks before any initial improvement is noticed.
Prescription Medications can be toxic to the skin over a period of time. (Not Recommended for Use).
Tetracycline: This antibiotic is the most popular conventional treatment for acne. It may be used alone or in combination with benzoyl peroxide. Food, antacids, iron supplements, and milk can interfere with the absorption of this antibiotic, so it is important to remember to take it alone. This medication must be taken for a minimum of three months, and it often needs to be continued for even longer. It will take at least two months before any improvement is noticed. Other antibiotics may also be prescribed if tetracycline is not effective. These include: trimetoprim-sulfamethoxazole, minocycline, doxycycline, and erythromycin. Antibiotics also kill the good bacteria in your bowel and can cause your teeth to turn gray.
Oral contraceptives: For women with acne who also need birth control, some doctors will prescribe an oral contraceptive that contains either mestranol or ethinylestradiol. These drugs interfere with the androgen hormone that causes acne.
Therapeutic Injections: In severe cases of acne where cysts form, doctors have had some success with injecting steroids directly into the cyst to resolve them.
Isotretinoin: Like the topical retinoic acid, this medication is a derivative of vitamin A and it works to prevent the blockage of oil glands. Blocking the glands does not fix the problem.

Adult Acne

Adult Acne
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

Acne is bad enough when it strikes with puberty. But when it continues or strikes again in adulthood, it can be a real nuisance. Acne is a skin condition that usually begins around the time of puberty. More than eighty percent of teenagers and preteens will develop acne to some extent. But it can affect people of every age, gender, and race. It affects both males and females, but boys are more likely to have severe acne and to have acne that continues into adult acne.
The scientific name for the condition is acne vulgaris because acne usually strikes in plainly visible locations such as the face, neck, chest and back. Acne is an age old problem that has likely been plaguing people of all ages for centuries.
What Causes Adult Acne?
Acne is an inflammation of the skin that can form in adulthood just as easily as it forms in pubescence. Acne is caused by a number of factors. Contact with an oily substance such as mineral oil, vegetable oil, or petroleum is a common cause of acne, as is the use of certain medications and steroids. However, acne is most often cause by the secretion of androgens. Acne occurs most often to teens and preteens because these androgens are initially secreted at the onset of puberty. But these sex hormones are secreted into adulthood as well and can continue to cause problems with acne. Poor dietary habits and lack of exercise also contribute to adult acne.
Androgens are male sex hormones but they are secreted by females as well. Androgens stimulate the production of oil from the skin's oil glands. Acne occurs when these oil glands become overactive and the exit from the gland is blocked, causing the oil to build up in the gland and swell. A bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes normally colonizes this swollen gland causing the development of inflammation and pus. In particularly severe cases, the glands may burst into the skin and produce cysts.
How Do I Treat Adult Acne?
Over ninety percent of acne patients, both teens and adults, respond to treatment, although the treatment may need to be continued for months or even years. Here are a few of the most common herbal, homeopathic, and traditional methods that can be used to treat adult acne.
Adult Acne Products
Home Therapy: Organic Apple Cider Vinegar swabs and other astringent cleansers work to remove the oil buildup that may become blocked in the skin's glands. These products may cause dryness, itching, and redness, so be sure to use them only on problem areas.
Herbs: Herbs such as chamomile, lavender, juniper, bergamot, dandelion root, and burdock root can be used to reduce toxicity and improve the overall condition of the skin. Echinacea and poke root are often used for their anti-inflammatory properties and red clover may be beneficial for its estrogenic action. Unlike medication treatments, the effects of acne surgery are usually more immediate. And surgery is also effective in reducing the development and visibility of adult acne scars.
Cleaning the intestinal Tract: Acne can be a by-product of a filthy intestinal tract and colon. In most cases when the colon is clean the acne will go away. I recommend the intestinal cleanser Oxy-Powder.

Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety Symptoms
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

Anxiety can cause a variety of physical and mental symptoms. Seek the advice of your health care professional if these symptoms are affecting your daily life. Here are a few of the most common anxiety symptoms.
Chest Pain
Chest pains are a frightening symptom of anxiety, and one that should not be taken lightly. If you are at all unsure about the cause of your chest pains, seek medical attention immediately. However, it is sometimes possible to tell the difference between the chest pains associated with anxiety and those of a heart attack. The chest pain of a heart attack is a knifelike pain that usually does not start in the chest. It may be possible to diminish the chest pain from anxiety with deep breathing exercises or a massage.
Neck, Face, and Shoulder Pain
Muscle tension and contraction can cause intense pain in the neck and shoulder area. This pain can often be relieved by relaxation exercises or massage.
Difficulty Swallowing
Sometimes, anxiety causes the muscles in the throat to contract making it feel as though you cannot breathe or swallow. It is important to remember that this is merely a reaction to anxiety and not a symptom that will cause you any real harm. It may feel unpleasant, but if you can calm down and practice taking slow breaths through your nose, this symptom will soon dissipate.
Indigestion and Digestive Disorders
With the release of adrenaline that accompanies anxiety, the blood races through the system and is diverted away from certain areas of the body, such as the digestive tract. This slows the digestion and causes the muscles around the stomach to tense up. This can cause indigestion, heartburn and diarrhea or constipation.
Sweating
Sweating is your body's way of reducing an increase in body temperature. When adrenaline is released into the system, the heart begins beating faster and the body heats up (similar to exercising.) This symptom will soon pass as the anxiety subsides and the body's other physical responses return to normal.
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth often goes along with the other physical symptoms that are caused by anxiety. This symptom can be alleviated by taking a drink of purified water.
Shaking
Shaking is a normal reaction to fear or a decrease in body temperature. When the muscles are tense, they may spasmodically contract and cause friction between the muscles and other body tissues.
Shortness of Breath
Anxiety can often make you feel as though you simply cannot get enough oxygen to your lungs. Your chest may feel tight and unable to expand to accommodate the air your body needs. It may even feel as though you are being smothered. Try to relax and remember that this is only a sensation caused by anxiety, you are actually getting plenty of air to your lungs. Sit down and concentrate on taking slow, deep, and regular breaths.
Weakness or Tingling in Extremities
When a stressful situation occurs, the body responds with a number of physical symptoms. Anxiety causes changes in the circulation, blood oxygen and blood carbon dioxide levels, and muscle tension. This combination of physical changes can cause a feeling of weakness in the extremities. When blood carbon dioxide levels are altered, it may accumulate in the extremities, causing a tingling sensation. Light exercise may help to alleviate these anxiety symptoms.
Sleep Disorders
Insomnia, difficulty staying asleep, and recurrent nightmares are common yet distressing symptoms of anxiety. It is important to try to maintain a regular sleeping schedule and to practice relaxation and breathing techniques to attain a better night's sleep.
Heart Palpitations
When the body is faced with a stressful situation, adrenaline is released to prepare for a physical response. This chemical causes the heart to race and feel as if it is missing beats (heart palpitations.) Again, this is a common symptom and it is unlikely to lead to any actual cardiovascular distress.
Pale Complexion
Anxiety causes the blood to be diverted to the muscles and away from other areas of the body, such as the face. When the blood vessels in the face receive a reduced blood flow, the skin appears to lose some of its color, or rosy glow. This symptom of anxiety is not dangerous and will usually dissipate as the body's other physical reactions return to normal.
Depression
Depression is a common symptom for people who experience anxiety disorders. People who are clinically depressed have a chemical imbalance that may cause or be a side effect of anxiety. You should seek help from a qualified medical professional if you feel a persistent feeling of anxiety.
Headaches
Spasmodic muscle contractions and muscle tension can cause discomfort, headaches or even migraines. Tension in the muscles that surround the skull may make you feel as though you have a tight band wrapped around your head. Also, the reduced blood flow to the head and brain can cause pain in the eyes, face, and jaw.

Anxiety

Anxiety
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

Some degree of anxiety is perfectly normal. We all experience situations where we may feel fear and apprehension. However, there are some people who feel anxious even when there is no discernible cause. In these cases, the anxiety usually becomes overwhelming and may interfere with the normal functioning of one's life. People who suffer from a debilitating level of anxiety are suffering from an anxiety disorder. Negative emotional patterns, anger, fear, stress and anxiety all contribute to degenerative illness such as cancer, heart disease etc..
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a normal physical reaction to an internal or external demand that is placed on your system. The human body reacts to most stressful situations with the "fight or flight" response where it is flooded with stress hormones. These hormones make the heart pump faster, the breathing rate increase, and the muscles tense up. This is the body's way of gearing up for imminent physical activity. However, a person who suffers from an anxiety disorder may experience chronic and recurrent episodes of anxiety that have no discernible cause. These episodes can last for days, weeks, or even months. Sometimes, an anxiety disorder may stem from a definite trigger such as childhood abuse or witnessing the event of war. But in other situations, hormonal or chemical changes in the brain or environmental factors cause an anxiety disorder to develop.
What Causes Anxiety?
There are several parts of the brain that are involved in the development of anxiety. Scientists have performed research using brain imaging technologies and neurochemical techniques to discover the network of interacting events that are responsible for anxiety. Most of the activity appears to be centered around the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure deep within the brain. Many researchers feel that the amygdala acts as a sort of central "hub" that processes and interprets different signals to and within the brain. The amygdala controls the storage of emotional memories, therefore, it may play a central role in the development of anxiety disorders such as phobias, and post traumatic stress disorder.
The hiccocampus is another area of the brain that is likely to be involved in anxiety disorders. This part of the brain is responsible for processing threatening or traumatic stimuli. It helps to encode information into memories. People who have undergone severe stress, such as military combat or childhood abuse, have a smaller hiccocampus than people who have not experienced such a traumatic event. The smaller size may explain the fragmented memory, flashbacks, and memory deficits of those who develop post traumatic stress disorder.
Scientists are using this information to understand more about anxiety disorders and how they develop. In studies of twins and family members, researchers have determined that genetics does play some role in the development of an anxiety disorder. But life experience is also certainly a factor. Researchers are hoping to discover how genetics and experience interact in each of the anxiety disorders. They can then use this information to develop appropriate methods of prevention and treatment.
The Costs of Anxiety
According to a recent study by the Anxiety Disorder Association of America, anxiety disorders cost the U.S. more than $42 billion a year. And more than $22.84 billion is associated with the repeated use of healthcare services, as those with anxiety disorders seek relief for symptoms that mimic physical illnesses.
Do I Have An Anxiety Disorder? The Anxiety Self-Test
Do you experience unexpected panic attacks, during which you are overcome with fear for no apparent reason?
Are you preoccupied with thoughts or images that you can't get out of your mind (such as burning down the house, or being contaminated by germs)?
Do you become terrified in public settings and social settings involving unfamiliar people?
Do you experience shortness of breath or heart palpitations for no apparent physical reason?
Do you spend an excessive amount of time each day doing things over and over again (for example, hand washing, checking things, or counting)?
Are you terrified at an inappropriate level of a particular object or situation (such as spiders, heights, water, or dogs)?
Do you feel restless, easily distracted, tense, irritable, and exhausted?
Does your level of anxiety interfere with your daily life?
Are you plagued by the memory of a traumatic event such as a car accident, childhood abuse, or a natural disaster?
Have you experienced changes in sleeping or eating habits?
Getting Help For Anxiety
After reading this information, you may feel that you are suffering from an anxiety disorder. A visit to your natural health care professional is the best way to begin treating your anxiety. A physician can evaluate your medical history and your symptoms to determine whether the symptoms are due to an anxiety disorder, some other medical condition, or both.

Acne Treatment

Acne Treatment
by: Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

Acne is an annoying skin condition that affects people of every age, gender, and race. The scientific name for the condition is acne vulgaris because acne usually strikes in plainly visible locations such as the face, neck, chest and back. Acne is an age old problem that has likely been plaguing people for centuries. But there are numerous treatment methods available for this bothersome condition. Read on to learn more about acne, and what you can do to treat it.
Who Gets Acne?
Acne usually begins around the time of puberty. More than eighty percent of teenagers and preteens will develop acne to some extent. It affects both males and females, but boys are more likely to have severe acne and to have acne that continues into adulthood.
What Causes Acne?
Acne can be caused by a number of factors. Acne is also caused by ingesting a lot of red meat, milk, sugar and white flour. They are male hormones but they are secreted by females as well. Androgens stimulate the production of oil from the skin's oil glands. Acne occurs when these oil glands become overactive and the exit from the gland is blocked, causing the oil to build up in the gland and swell. A bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes normally colonizes this swollen gland causing the development of inflammation and pus. In particularly severe cases, the glands may burst into the skin and produce cysts.
How Should I Treat My Acne?
Over ninety percent of acne patients respond to treatment, although the treatment may need to be continued for months or even years. Here are a few common treatment methods that can be used for acne.
Remedies: Herbs such as chamomile, lavender, juniper, bergamot, dandelion root, and burdock root can be used to reduce toxicity and improve the overall condition of the skin. Echinacea and poke root are often used for their anti-inflammatory properties and red clover may be beneficial for its estrogenic action.
Complementary Treatment
Acupuncture: Stagnant of Chi in the channels of the face is said to be the cause of acne. Acupuncture performed on these points of the face may help relieve acne.
Homeopathy: For patients with pustules and blind boils, especially on the face, neck, and back, may be helped by Kali brom. Selenium is often used for acne sufferers with oily skin, blackheads, and pustules. And hepar sulph. Is typically used for patients who suffer from pustules that are painful and filled with yellow pus.
Conventional Treatment
Medication: Conventional acne medications may be topical- applied directly to the skin-, or they may be systemic- taken internally.

Overweight? - 5 Tips To Enhance Your Sex Drive

Overweight? - 5 Tips To Enhance Your Sex Drive
 by: JLee Davis

You could try one of the many sexual enhancement drugs available today. You could sign up for very expensive workshops and retreats. You could even strip down and pole dance for your partner.
My guess is that these things just aren't your style. I believe that you're seeking natural and balanced healing for your sexdrive and your overweight body.
You're tired, your energy is low and you aren't feeling quite like you think you should. You don't have unrealistic expectations. You do have some dreams you've hung onto despite your physical size. You've clung to them, knowing that some day those dreams would take you to a place inside you where you were finally ready to take control.
Welcome to your life. A life that will continue to grow more healthy, from here on. Once you embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, you can never plead ignorance again. You can never say..."I didn't know".
Your sex drive does not need to take a complete dive while you're in the process of losing weight. That extra weight does not have to be like carrying heavy sacks of spuds around. It doesn't have to tire you out.
Simple things you can do to help energize you and lighten the load include the following suggestions.
You can make sure your daily food intake contains the highest possible raw content you can achieve up to about 80%. For now, to go much higher is a path you can move into. Keep the raw fruits and veggies separate and your energy level will steadily climb. Your body WILL respond to what you feed it. It has no choice, chemically speaking.
Step in place for ten minutes. Hardly a spit in the ocean of time in your day. Get up and do this for yourself. I promise your Self will love you for it. Walk around the block or walk in place. Preferably outside and breathing with a full inhale/exhale. The more you move, the more you'll be able to move both in your live and in your love life. You don't want your partner to have to do all the work do you? Keep your eye on the prize. It's your dream. You CAN make it happen!
Make the choice to work at your sex life. Most especially if you and your partner have been together a long time. Sometimes things just need sprucing up. If you feel too overweight to feel sexy, try splitting a bottle of pleasant red wine. Put on something nice and enhance the mood of your room. Work at it. Overweight, underweight or just perfect, people have to make the effort to keep the sexual tension alive.
Tend to your physical appearance. Sometimes in our daily lives, we forget to take a moment to add the little touches that we used to do daily. Trim those stray hairs or apply that bit of lipstick. Small things can enhance your appearance and the way you walk, adding confidence to your style. When we take care of ourselves, we stand taller and feel better about ourselves.
Don't let life get in the way of preserving the passion and fire you and your partner once had. Don't let the pounds you're in the process of losing, discourage you from feeling just as sexy as you did. You'll get there again and when you do, you'll still have your mate. The one you fell in love with. Don't let anything get in the way. Schedule dates with your mate and make the effort.
We have all sorts of obstacles in life and each one can seem insurmountable at the time. Later, we can see each in perspective and sometimes even with humor. Don't let tomorrow's comic relief get you down today. Do something about your sex life and the drive will take care of itself.

Urinary Tract Infection ( UTI ) Symptoms

Urinary Tract Infection ( UTI ) Symptoms
 by: Balaji .B

Urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria in one of the tracts through which urine passes. The infection can occur in the urethra, ureters, or the urinary bladder. Women are mostly affected due to UTI than men, but no specific reason has been found out till date. Men can also be affected by UTI with the infection causing greater level of discomfort.
The urinary tract infection symptoms should be treated properly; else it could damage the kidneys. Plenty of medications are available in the market to cure the urinary tract infection symptoms. Proper diagnosis is vital, as these symptoms can also be caused by other problems such as infections of the vagina or vulva.
In some cases, the urinary tract infection symptoms can resemble those of sexually transmitted diseases. Only a physician can make the distinction and make a correct diagnosis. This is important, because the right medications need to be prescribed to cure UTI symptoms. A strong urge to urinate without being able to delay is one of the urinary tract infection symptoms. A sharp pain or burning sensation in the urethra when the urine is released, is one of the other UTI symptoms.
Releasing very little urine with a tinge of blood is one of the other symptoms. The urge to urinate recurring frequently is one of the other urinary tract infection symptoms. Experiencing soreness in the lower abdomen, back, or sides, the sensation of needing to pass urine but being unable to do so and nature of urine being cloudy and foul smelling are various kinds of urinary tract infection symptoms.
Some of the urinary tract infection symptoms in newborns include fever or hypothermia (low temperature), poor feeding, and jaundice, and includes vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and poor feeding. Also the most common UTI symptoms are irritability, eating poorly, unexplained fever that doesn't go away, loss of bowel control, loose bowels, and a change in urination pattern.

Thousands of Anxiety and Panic Attack Sufferers Missing Out On UK Disability Benefits

Thousands of Anxiety and Panic Attack Sufferers Missing Out On UK Disability Benefits
 by: Ali Sinclair

Thousands of Anxiety and Panic Attack sufferers miss out on Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance in the United Kingdom every year. Why? Because many are not aware that they are eligible and so simply do not apply.
Disability Benefits are not means tested and are not affected by savings. Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance are awarded based on the applicants need.
Anxiety and Panic Attack sufferers aged 16 to 65 should claim Disability Living Allowance if their condition is such that they require help from another person with personal care and/or getting around.
Disability Living Allowance comprises two components, the care component and the mobility component, the applicant must have needed the support for a minimum of three months.
If Anxiety or Panic Attacks inhibit a persons mobility to the extent where they are unable to go out without the support of another person, because they may Panic, run off into the Road, or need support and encouragement, then they may be eligible for the Lower Rate of the Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance.
To qualify, the applicant must satisfy the disability condition for the lower rate mobility, the applicant must be 'so severely disabled physically or mentally', that they cannot walk outdoors 'without guidance or supervision from another person most of the time'.
If the sufferer needs support and encouragement from another person to manage their personal care, such as reminding to have a wash, help washing and bathing, reminding to take medication, help choosing clothes and getting dressed, support when having an Anxiety or Panic Attack, then they may be eligible for the care component of Disability Living Allowance.
The lower rate care component may be awarded if 'you are so severely disabled physically or mentally that you cannot prepare a meal for yourself if you have the ingredients' or 'you are so severely disabled physically or mentally that you require in connection with your bodily functions, attention from another person for a significant portion of the day, whether during a single period or a number of periods'.
To qualify for the middle rate care component, the sufferer must require 'continual supervision throughout the day in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others', or require similar supervision throughout the night. The higher rate may be awarded if the sufferer requires supervision both day and night.
Anxiety or Panic Attack sufferers aged 65 or over, should apply for Attendance Allowance, and should have needed support from another person for a minimum of six months. There is no mobility component for Attendance Allowance, and only two rates of the care component. To qualify for the lower rate care component, the claimant must require 'continual supervision throughout the day or night in order to avoid substantial danger to yourself or others', to qualify for the higher rate, the claimant must require this supervision both day and night.
If Anxiety or Panic Attack suffers are not sure if they are eligible, the Disability Benefits helpline can advise. If in doubt, claim! It is advisable to seek the help of a Welfare Rights organization when completing the claim form, as they will be familiar with the qualifying rules, and can gather the right information for a successful claim.
Millions of pounds of Disability Benefits go unclaimed every year in the UK, if you meet the qualifying rules, its your right, claim it for the help you need to manage Anxiety and Panic Attacks.

Spring Cleaning with a Fresh Start

Spring Cleaning with a Fresh Start
 by: David Zielski

Spring is here, birds are singing, the sun is getting warmer, the air even feels and smells fresher. So we get caught up in the spirit of spring. We are happier, feel healthier and are more active. Soon, we will all start the yearly ritual of opening the windows to let all that sweet smelling spring fresh air in, and break out the toxic cleaning products.
This year, why not try using all natural, biodegradable and non-toxic cleaning products. There are a wide variety of cleaners and manufacturers for you to choose from. We manufacture and sell Simple. Pure. Clean. all natural cleaning products. People love our stuff, they have been buying it on the web for over two years. Now, for the first time, it is going to be available in retail locations in the North East. No matter what you may choose to buy, Simple. Pure. Clean., another brand or just look on the web to find a recipe for an all natural cleaner you can make yourself, please try these all natural cleaners. They are safe for you and your family, safe for your pets and the environment.
In 1989, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined the toxic chemicals found in common household cleaners, often dispersed in fumes, are three times more likely to cause cancer than are other air pollutants. Thus, in 1993, The General Services Administration (GSA) initiated the Cleaning Products Pilot Project to identify specific cleaning products with reduced human health and safety concerns for use in cleaning the more than 7,700 buildings overseen by GSA's Public Building Service. On average, Americans spend about 90 percent of their days indoors. EPA studies indicate that human exposure to air pollutants indoors can be 2-5 times, and occasionally up to 100 times, higher than outdoor levels.
You may ask yourselves, "How can these common household cleaners be bad for me and my family? I read the label and it does not tell me of the harmful ingredients." Cleaning products are exempt from the full ingredient disclosure on product labels required for food and personal care products due to how the trade secret laws work. According to a survey, 88% of Americans believe that household cleaning products must be tested for safety before they can be sold to the public, and 87% think manufacturers are required to list their products' ingredients on labels. I would be weary of any product that does not fully disclose their ingredients.
Also included in our Simple. Pure. Clean natural cleaning products are pure essential oils to add to the overall "experience" of cleaning. We have a number of cleaning companies and customers who write to us telling of such experiences. Here is one such testimonial.
"I don't write to companies ever, but I had to make an exception this time. My friend recommended that I purchase your products. I did only because she insisted so much. I was skeptical that non-toxic products could clean as well as my favorite products. To my surprise, your products worked better then my old favorites. Now I can't imagine using anything but Simple. Pure. Clean. to clean with. Each of the products I bought smelled so good they make me WANT to clean!!!"
The purpose of this article is not to lecture to you or scare you. It is just to inform you that there are other awesome all natural products out there made by a lot of great companies. Please do your own research either on the web or in your local library. We use many different products in our home, but we always make sure to use only all natural products. Switching to all natural non-toxic cleaning products is one way we can all easily get rid of toxins in our home and have a "Fresh Start" this spring.

Menopause and Anxiety

Menopause and Anxiety
 by: Cathy Taylor

The mid-life phenomenon known as menopause and the stresses of anxiety go hand in hand. Panic attacks, rushes of energy, burning in the chest, unusual vibrations throughout the body, and warm sensations are some of the physical effects you may feel under this condition.
When menopause hits, there is a greater chance women will go through anxiety and depression. Christian Northrop talks about this phenomenon in her book, Wisdom of Menopause, where if a woman has repressed something in her life, she won't be able to get past menopause employing the same tactics. For example, unexpressed anger will find its way out and sometimes in unusual or uncomfortable ways.
In what is often referred to as a Ёmidlife crisis,Ё this time of life forces women to re-evaluate themselves and the role(s) they play as they are getting older. And, often times we are not comfortable with what we find. A little voice in the back of our head is saying, "If you don't make changes now … you never will!" Our hormonal imbalances (due to decreased estrogen levels) can contribute to feelings of depression or make us feel plain 'indifference.' Even if menopause isn't actually causing these conditions, it can heighten underlying anxiety and bring it to the surface.
Anxiety is an individual's prolonged feeling of dread and worry with no particular reason behind it. It's uncomfortable and causes stress particularly on the body. It can be triggered by problems in everyday life like paying the bills and work. Although worrying about these things for a normal person has its ceiling of severity, menopausal women suffering from anxiety tend to think about their problems excessively.
When anxiety finally hits its highest peak, it is often called a panic attack. Panic attacks are debilitating episodes of fright and fear that include chest pains, fear of death, and shaking. In what is called being ЁpsychosociallyЁ depressed, women have negative beliefs and attitudes in regards to getting older, assuming unwanted roles such as caretaker, and responding negatively to impatient husbands who might demand sex.
Being depressed during the duration of this condition has a lot to do with their overall psychological well-being prior to menopause. Women who have continuous anxiety and depression beforehand are more likely to suffer worse cases of anxiety during this latter phase of life. If life-long imbalances have not been healed, menopause may exacerbate the situation. We might feel unable to perform Ёfemale dutiesЁ, contributing to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. Research has found that consistent regular physical activity (i.e. exercise) before menopause has been scientifically proven to lessen the possibility of anxiety symptoms during this transition. It's also helpful to avoid drinking caffeine-loaded liquids, sleep deprivation, and stimulant use.
Psychiatric consultations are highly recommended for anxiety sufferers under menopause. An experienced counsellor and/or therapist can help us recover and evaluate our lives including healing emotional imbalances. It is a great time to refocus our attention toward new activities and roles. As is common with anxiety, feelings of worthlessness, fright, and even suicidal tendencies can occur. In this case, antidepressants may be prescribed. Coping with all of the physical changes, assuming new roles, possibly facing many of our fears for the first time, and generally waking up to the fact that Ёlife just isn't what it used to beЁ are all realizations that contribute to anxiety in older women. In these times, it is important to maintain focus and concentrate on the positive things in life. Although it can be hard, it can be done.
Having a plethora of life responsibilities and obligations during menopause can create stress, and having an ґexcessґ of this stress can cause adrenal fatigue. Anxiety in menopause sufferers results from hormonal imbalances. In the menstrual cycle, ovulation causes progesterone (which has soothing effects on the mind and body) to be released. Irregular cycles are grounds for anxiety build-up, as a result of the lack of this Ёhappy hormone.Ё All of these conditions can be treated with alternative therapies such as natural progesterone cream.
But why do some women go through menopause and barely notice a difference? One consensus among medical doctors theorizes that it has a lot to do with women's self-esteem and self-confidence. One thing is for sure, if you are having trouble with either of these, you'll get a chance to deal with them now. One thing menopause is great at, and that is bringing out our unresolved issues. And we all know how anxious that can make us.

Canine Bloat

Canine Bloat
 by: Ron Swerdfiger

What is Canine Bloat?
Bloat refers to the bloating of the stomach. Essentially it is a build up of gas in the stomach which is unable to be released. Bloat with Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) occurs when the stomach fills with gas and twists 180 to 360 degrees on it's axis between the esophagus and duodenum or the entrance and exit parts of the stomach. Bloat is a very serious problem in large breed dogs. When combined with the complications of GDV, bloat is a leading cause of death of dogs, second only to cancer.
The exact cause of bloat is still unknown. Generally, it is believed that excessive eating and drinking of water followed by exercise can cause bloat. It is thought that exercise causes food or fluid in the stomach to cause a build up of gas. The severity of the conditions is more serious when the stomach twists upon itself within the abdomen in a clockwise rotation causing the inlet and outlet of the stomach as well as blood vessels which supply the stomach to become constricted at both ends. As a result, the constriction will cause the stomach tissue to die. In a very short time, the stomach becomes restricted of nutrients and oxygen. If not treated, the dog can die.
What Are the Symptoms of Canine Bloat? Anxious, restless Distended abdomen Attempting to vomit Excessive drooling Whining Pale gums Increase in heart rate. Difficult breathing
What Causes Bloat?
The stomach becomes filled with gas and because of several possible factors; the dog is unable to relieve the pressure. Bloat, with GDV, is when the stomach goes in to a Atwist.@ This closes both the esophagus and pylorus, preventing the dog from relieving the gas pressure which can quickly build up after a large meal. This condition is extremely fatal, causing shock, coma and eventually death. Like many other conditions which affect our dogs, the actual cause of bloat is still unknown. Several factor seem to contribute to a dogs chances of getting bloat Stress Eating or drinking too fast. Exercise before and immediately after eating Having a large deep chest Elevated food bowls Hereditary Disposition
Are All Dogs At Risk Cannine Bloat?
Canine bloat and GDV usually only effects large breed dogs, but smaller dogs are still susceptible.. It is thought that some lines of breeds are genetically at a higher risk. Though bloat can occur in puppies, it is a condition which usually occurs in adult dogs. Furthermore, male dogs are more likely to suffer from bloat than female dogs. Here is a list of some breeds that have a higher chance of being effected by bloat and GDV. German Shepherd Great Dane Standard Poodle Rottweiler Akita Bloodhound Great Pyrenees Irish Setter Old English Sheepdog Boxer Golden Retriever Irish Wolfhound St. Bernards Labrador Retriever Newfoundland Doberman
What Is the Treatment of Dog Bloat?
Canine bloat is a very serious problem. If you suspect your dog of having bloat, contact your vet immediately. Every second counts! If caught and diagnosed quick enough, initial treatment will involve inserting a tube or tochar in to the stomach wall to remove the gas. If necessary, the vet will then operate, attempting to untwist the stomach. Secondary treatment will involve treating shock, dehydration, fatigue, and other complications resulting from the distension of the stomach.
Is There Any Way To Prevent Dog Bloat?
Prevention of bloat can be difficult. Because there are so many possible causes for this condition, prevention must be examined on an individual basis. If you have a dog that is at risk there are a couple of things that you can do to decrease the chances of this fatal condition. Since bloat is believed to be connected with genetics and hereditary, these preventive measures can only decrease the chances of bloat. Do not overfeed. Feed 2-3 small meals a day. Do not use elevated food bowls Do not allow your dog to drink large amounts of water after eating. Add an enzyme product to your dogs food Keep emergency veterinary contact handy Gastropexy surgery

Tips on How to Stop Smoking

Tips on How to Stop Smoking
 by: Marilyn Pokorney

Once you have decided that you really want to stop smoking it can be a real challenge. Here are some tips to help you break the habit quicker.
Before you begin, decide what you are going to do when you have a craving. Keep a diary for a week or so and learn what times and situations tempt you to want to have a cigarette. Decide what you are going to do instead of reaching for a cigarette.
Ask your doctor for advice if you have other health problems or are worried about gaining weight.
The day you begin immediately get rid of ashtrays, lighters and all cigarettes.
Consider finding yourself a friend, relative or co-worker who wants to quit too and support each other.
If stress is a factor then find an exercise program. Joining a nearby health club will be less expensive than the cigarettes.
Your home will smell fresh and clean. You'll spend less time, energy and money cleaning your house.
You will reduce the risk of fire. As a result your homeowner's insurance rates may be reduced.
Your food will taste better.
Remind yourself of everything nice that you could be buying for yourself or your home with the money that you are spending on cigarettes.
As a last resort remind yourself of the health benefits. You'll reduce your chances of lung, throat and mouth cancer. Reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease.
Stop smoking and the body will begin to repair the damage done almost immediately.

How to Do Low-Cost Mold Sample Collection and Mold Laboratory Identification of Mold Species

How to Do Low-Cost Mold Sample Collection and Mold Laboratory Identification of Mold Species
 by: Phillip Fry

Although any mold in elevated levels indoors can cause severe health problems for mold-sensitive occupants, several toxic molds such as Stachybotrys, Aspergillus, and Penicillium pose far greater health risks than others, according to Phillip Fry, Certified Mold Inspector and author of the book Mold Health Guide.
Thus, many homeowners, rental property owners, tenants, employers, and employees in Canada, the USA, and worldwide want to know, and need to know, the precise identities of the various mold species infesting their moldy home, apartment, or workplace.
The accurate identification of mold species requires two steps: (1) physical collection of mold samples from the moldy building; and (2) mold laboratory analysis of the collected mold samples.
For the first step, a property owner, manager, tenant, or employee usually hires a certified mold inspector, an industrial hygienist, or an environmental hygienist for mold inspection and collection of mold testing samples, at a typical cost of US $500 to $2,000 for a 2,000 square foot (186 square meters) home.
This inspection and testing fee usually includes mold laboratory analysis and mold species identification for a small number (3 to 10) of collected mold samples.
Alternatively, if the available funds for mold testing and mold lab analysis are low, it is possible to achieve the same accurate mold testing results for just $60 to $200 by using---
(1) inexpensive, transparent, sticky, adhesive tape ("lift tape sampling"), such as Scotch® brand tape, to collect the mold samples; and
(2) a low-cost Asian mold analysis laboratory (e.g., $20 per sample for mold species identification and quantification, compared to the usual $50 to $150 per sample in North America or Europe).
Lift tape sampling and testing is an easy, practically-free (except for the cost of the tape), and an effective way to collect mold test samples when you---
(1) Can see mold growing on a wall, ceiling, floor, carpeting, furniture, heating/cooling duct register, or other surface;
(2) Want to know whether a particular stain, discoloration, or mystery substance on the wall or another surface is actually mold growth; and/or
(3) Smell mold (the digestive gas emitted by mold eating the home or building) and want to test a number of surfaces upon which elevated levels of airborne mold spores may have landed or been deposited, such as on walls, window sills, window and door trim, refrigerator top, kitchen cabinet tops, undusted furniture, heating/cooling duct registers, and the return air filter in the heating/cooling system.
The easy steps involved in tape lift sampling are---
1. Cut a three-inch (3") long strip of one-inch (1") wide, transparent sticky tape.
2. While wearing rubber gloves and a breathing respirator mask (with organic vapor filters) from the local hardware or home improvement store, press the tape strip firmly (sticky side down) onto the visible mold growth or onto the surface being tested.
3. Remove (peel back) the tape from the surface.
4. Open up a small ziplock bag (a transparent, easily sealable plastic storage bag), and press lightly the lift tape sample sticky side onto the inside sidewall of the ziplock bag.
5. Close [zip shut] the ziplock bag completely. Tape it shut if necessary to make sure no airborne mold spores can escape.
6. Attach to the outside of the ziplock bag a large adhesive label with the tester's name, date of sampling, property address, the precise testing location at that address (e.g., "air conditioning duct register in living room"), testing method ("lift tape sampling"), and the name, postal address, email address, phone number, and fax number (if any} of the person submitting the sample to the mold laboratory.
7. Mail or express the collected lift tape samples (including payment of the lab's analysis fee} to the mold analysis laboratory for mold species identification and quantification.

Surprising Health Benefits for Pet Owners

Surprising Health Benefits for Pet Owners
 by: Patricia Wagner

Did you know that there are key health benefits that can result from owning a pet? Having one can enhance your physical, mental and social wellbeing.
1. How can a pet help your physical health?
Owning a dog, for instance, will encourage you to get more exercise. With your faithful friend at your side, you're much more likely to go for a walk. Walking is one of the best health activities you can do. While walking you're also more likely to socially interact with your neighbors because your special pal often acts as an ice-breaker.
Research led by Dr. Karen Allen at the State University of New York at Buffalo shows that pets can help lower blood pressure. Stockbrokers with high blood pressure were studied to see what happened when they adopted a pet dog or cat. Researchers concluded that having a pet nearby helps control increases in blood pressure due to stress.
In his studies Alan Beck, ScD (Professor of Animal Ecology, Purdue University) found that the simple act of petting your dog slows your heart rate and causes your blood pressure to drop.
An added health advantage from pet ownership is that patients may live longer after heart attacks. Some doctors recommend that a heart attack survivor adopt a dog because research has shown that a faithful canine companion can help prolong an owner's life.
2. How Can A Pet Improve Your Mental Health?
Sharing your life with a cat may help your mental health. A study conducted at Australia's University of New England found that people who own feline friends may experience fewer psychiatric disturbances than those without cats.
Pets can help their owners overcome depression through their companionship and unconditional love. They seem to possess the natural ability to help you relax and enjoy life more.
Pets can also help when you experience times of loneliness. English poet, Alexander Pope, has stated that histories are more full of examples of the fidelity of dogs than of friends. According to a Chinese proverb, dogs have so many friends because they wag their tails, not their tongues.
When you take care of a pet you have to develop a routine of getting out, buying food and providing exercise. This can help fight off depression and loneliness. The simple responsiblity of pet care can help you get your mind off yourself and your problems.
3. How can a pet enhance your wellbeing in the area of relationships?
American Animal Hospital Association President, Link Wellborn, believes that pets are more than just a member of the family - they're central to a healthy lifestyle.
Pets help lessen tension between family members and add a lot of fun and unconditional love to the homes where they live. When pets do cute and funny things - which they often do - family members react by laughing and being more relaxed.

If you don't have a pet yet, consider making one part of your family, but make sure you have the time and resources necessary to provide a stable loving home for your new friend.
If you choose a dog as your new pal, remember this wise old saying. "A dog is man's best friend." That's true in more ways than one. You'll get unconditional love, companionship, loyalty and relaxation in return for your investment of time and material resources.
What a bargain!
