General Guide to Healthy Ethnic Dining Out
 by: Dr. John Rumberger
The Healthy Way to eat out. The do's and dont's for your next ethnic meal. Covering foods fromm Chinese, French, Mexican, and Greek... Don't leave home without it.
Chinese:
Look for: stir-fry or steamed dishes with lots of vegetables, steamed rice (brown if possible over white), poached fish, and hot and sour soups
Avoid: fatty spareribs, fried wontons, egg rolls, shrimp toast and fried rice
French:
Look for: steamed shellfish, roasted poultry, salad with dressing on the side, and sauces with a wine or tomato base
Avoid: high-fat sauces (bchamel, hollandaise, bйarnaise), croissants, pate, and rich pastries
Greek:
Look for: plaki (fish cooked with tomatoes, onions and garlic) and kabobs (broiled on a spit with vegetables)
Avoid: dishes with large amounts of butter or oil and baklava
Italian:
Look for: marinara, marsala, clam sauce and past primavera with vegetables and a small amount of oil. Simply prepared fish and chicken dishes are also good choices
Avoid: pasta stuffed with cheese or fatty meat and dishes with greasy or butter sauces
Japanese:
Look for: steamed rice, soba or udon noodles, yaki sobra (stir-fried noodles), shumai (steamed dumplings), tofu, sukiyaki, kayaku goban (vegetables and rice)
Avoid: shrimp or vegetable tempura, chicken katsu, tonkatsu (fried pork), shrimp agemono and fried tofu
Mexican:
Look for: fish, shrimp, and chicken with salsa made of tomato, chilies and onion. Order corn or flour tortillas as long as they are not deep fat fried.
Avoid: dishes with large amounts of cheese, sour cream, guacamole and refried beans cooked in lard.
Americans eat out now more than ever and this is likely not to change. Here are some tips in eating out:
Don't skip a meal on the day you are going out to eat
Eat a light snack (e.g. an apple, an orange, or a slice of low fat cheese) an hour or so before the meal thus avoiding overeating
Choose a restaurant that offers a variety of food including low fat options
Order more plant based foods - pick salads and deserts that emphasize fruits or vegetables; look for whole-grain pasta, bread, rice, and cereal
Order baked, not fried; grilled, not greasy
Ask about substitutions of lower fat, lower carbohydrate food as side dishes
Taste your food before adding salt, butter, sauces, or dressings
Order dressings on the side of your salads
Substitute healthier condiments such as mustard for mayonnaise, or pepper or lemon juice instead of salt
Resist the desire to "supersize" your meals
Make the salad your fist course with plenty of veggies and fruit
Eat slowly
Order food that requires work such as crab legs
Order water, sparkling water or mineral water with a twist of lemon - it's filling and has no calories (most diets insist on at least 8 glasses of water per day for a reason!)
Finish the main disk before you think about ordering desert
For dessert consider lower-fat, lower-calorie options such as fresh fruit, angel food cake or sherbet

Stop Taking Blood Pressure Medications with your Doctor's Approval

Stop Taking Blood Pressure Medications with your Doctor's Approval
 by: Doug Grant
I have been swallowing three varieties of blood pressure pills for 10 years. In another month, I expect to be off of them entirely. And that's with my doctor's approval.
Some months ago, I was introduced to a relatively new medical science called glycobiology.
Very briefly...the science centers around eight simple sugars. These are not sugars diabetics must avoid. They are food for our human cells.
Think of these simple sugars as you would oil in your car. The oil doesn't make your car run. However, without it you are headed for a serious breakdown.
Simple sugars function much the same way in your body as oil does in your car. They do not provide healing. They do not make your body run. But without them, you're headed for a serious breakdown. And that's spelled D-I-S-E-A-S-E.
HERE IS WHAT THE SCIENCE IS DOING FOR ME
After reading about a number of people who were able to get off the blood pressure medication when simple sugars were added to their diet, I decided to give it a try. I had been on the simple sugars for several months so it was time for an experiment.
Without asking my doctor, which is probably a no no, I starting cutting my pills in half. This wasn't altogether naughty because I have a BP monitor and kept close watch on what was happening.
I noticed that over a period of several weeks my BP readings gradually kept getting lower. In fact, several times they dipped below normal.
I talked to my doctor and confessed what I had done. I then told him I'd like to wean myself completely off the drugs.
Fortunately, he already knew about the science of simple sugars (glyconutritionals) and was willing to experiment with me. He immediately took me off one of my medications, which was a dollar a pill variety. That alone was worth a small drop in blood pressure.
He will gradually wean me off my other two medications. So within a month or two, I should be rid of them. I don't know about you, but anytime I can avoid taking drugs without compromising my health, I'm among the first to get in line.
WHY DO SIMPLE SUGARS WORK?
Without getting into a lot of technical stuff, the eight simple sugars are absolutely essential to the communication system of your body cells. When this communication system is working properly, cells can communicate their need for resources such as protein, hormones, etc. The result is healthy cells which create healthy tissue create healthy bodies.
You might ask, "Well how does that work in lowering Blood Pressure?"
The best answer I can give you is, "Pretty doggone well, thank you." Other than that, you'll have to dig out the science on your own. A good place to start is http://glycoscience.org. However, be warned that this is a technically oriented web site.
If you would like to continue monitoring my road to drug freedom, click the web site link at the bottom of this article. It will provide more non-technical information about the science and provide you with updates on my progress.
Also, don't hesitate to mention the science of glycobiology to your doctor. He or she may not have heard of it. This isn't hard to understand when you consider the science involves a food, not a drug. And even though the results are often amazing when applied to someone's diet, the fact that it is a food passes below the radar of many doctors.
Just remember, you can take the simple sugars without a prescription. They are non-toxic and do not interact with any drugs. In other words, they are totally safe.
You may even want to start the simple sugars on your own and give your body time to recover from years of simple sugar starvation. Then, after a month or two, ask your doctor if you can lower your dosage with the ultimate goal of becoming drug-free.
And speaking of monitoring your BP, excuse me a moment while I check my own.
Yup...hanging in there. It registered 115/69. Scouts honor.
I think I'm ready for another reduction in my medication. Except my doctor is on vacation.

Drinking Toxins? Good Health Begins With Filtered Water

Drinking Toxins? Good Health Begins With Filtered Water
 by: Dawn Kornels
Enhancing your health with filtered water and lots of it is the foundation of good health. A person may be able to survive a couple of months without food but only a few days without water. Hydrating the body is the primary step towards optimal health. Water is necessary for the digestion and absorption of food. It affects the body's metabolism by moving nutrients, hormones, antibodies and oxygen through the lymphatic system. Since it is calorie free, water is an excellent appetite suppressant and aids the body in metabolizing stored fat. Research has shown that for every 25 pounds overweight, one should drink an additional glass of water.
Water also flushes the body of toxins and other waste material. The SAD (Standard American Diet) is laden from toxins including meat grown with the aid of hormones, steroids and antibiotics, pesticides found on fruits and vegetables and the many chemical additives such as preservatives, artificial flavorings and colorings found in prepackaged and restaurant foods. The liver works hard processing and removing toxins before sending them to the kidneys. Without proper water intake, toxins can not be eliminated thoroughly and try to escape through the skin also being a contributing factor to skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoraisis, liver spots, body growths and warts. Offensive body odor also increases with body toxicity. Research has also shown that drinking at least 5 glasses of water daily reduces colon cancer by 45%.
Dehydration retains toxins which can cause stiffness, pain, adhesions, muscle spasms, and headaches. Much of the body's water is lost daily through the soles of the feet, breathing, perspiration and urine. The average man needs at least 12 cups daily and the average woman needs about 9 cups of water daily. Hot humid weather and extraneous work or exercise require more.
Finding a good source of water is hard these days and requires the use of filtration units. Research has shown that most tap and well waters in the U.S. are not safe because of heavy industrial and environmental pollution. The EPA has identified over 700 contaminants found on a regular basis in both city water supplies or wells and springs. The most common contaminants are abestos, cysts, lead, mercury, trialomethanes, turbidty, endocrine disrupters and volatile organic chemicals.
75% of all U.S. households have chlorinated water . The EPA states that chlorine follows after cigarette smoking in leading causes of cancer. Chlorine kills the good bacteria along with the bad bacteria. It also strips the hair and skin of necessary oils. Chlorine is one of the biggest irritants causing eczema today.
The EPA estimates that 40 million Americans are exposed to lead high above the maximum contaminant allowances. Radon is found in almost all water. 60% of all Americans drink fluoridated water. The underground water reservoirs which supply water for over 60% of the U.S. are contaminated by seepage from underground chemical storage tanks or toxic leaks from landfills.
Not only is drinking pure water important but also showering in pure water is equally important. The skins absorbs through osmosis whatever it comes in contact with be it petroleum based lotions, soaps, or chemical based perfumes. Also, showering in chlorinated or fluoridated water is as dangerous as drinking it. A 15 minute hot steamy shower in contaminated water is equivalent to drinking 8 glasses of contaminated water because of the vapors that are inhaled.
Drinking filtered water is one of the most important factors in good health . Water filter units are also very economical and save a lot of money as compared to buying bottled water. It is very easy to buy your own bottle to take filtered water made conveniently in your home to work with you or wherever you go. Investing in a water filter unit is one of the best investments you can make in your health and the health of your family.
