Body Building & Age Appropriate Training (Part 1) by Frank Zane


What's the maximum and the minimum amount of workouts needed for progress, how many sets, reps, weights, workout frequency, what kind of training cycle, how much aerobics, stretching, what kind of diet and food supplements are best? These Age 50 questions are what I investigate in my training on a continual basis.

The older I get the less I train. I get more sore, need longer to recuperate from the soreness, and use it as my guide as when to train, it could last as long as 6 days between workouts. Curiously, I notice when I have clients and train with them, the soreness goes away right after the beginning of the workout, I get a pump by doing one set of high reps of each exercise and stretching between sets.

A few hours later soreness erupts, increasing during the night and presents itself full blow the following morning, and depending of the severity of the workout, lasts for as long as 5 or 6 days. Sometimes I'm sore going into a workout but it fades as the workout ensues. It's best to let this soreness resolve itself and heal itself adequately, this is how growth occurs, time must be allowed for recuperation and healing. With this in mind I don't rush from one workout to the next, unless I have to.

When I do rush I pay the price of chronic soreness (especially in the shoulders) and possible injury. True, when one is used to training a lot his whole life and now finds himself with other priorities and with injuries it makes it necessary to slow down a bit. Question is "how do I fill the time gap created by the training vacancy?" The answer is to come up with good time investments that re quire a minimum of energy expenditure.

I've certainly had lots to do lately so a little extra time and energy from not training as hard comes in handy. The time investment best be one that gives you joy in per forming it.

In 1992 I wrote Fabulously Fit For ever. Being 50 years old at the time, I got into my best physical condition since competition days 9 years earlier. In my peak condition preparation I noticed I couldn't do as much as when I competed. Still, I managed to do my best, got into great shape and took some good photos. Now in my mid sixties I've notice a further slowdown in the last few years. The demon reared it's head at age 61. I found out I needed more rest between workouts.

To Young Body Builders. Injuries Could Do You In by Frank Zane


Avoiding injury becomes more important as you age. Younger bodybuilders, who feel they will be young forever, usually pay little attention to this but often pay dearly (in injuries) in their later years. If you are one of these young turks, learn from those of us who had to gain this knowledge the hard way.

Here is some you should know. Once you develop an injury you will likely get the same injury over and over again. It becomes like a 'fault line' on your body that is prone to cracks. I know this from experience. Because of my hunger to win titles I did excessive forced reps with heavy weights and developed lots of injuries. Resist this urge. You can almost always achieve the same effect by using a lighter weight and going slow on the negatives (the part where you lower the weight). This simulates the effect of a heavier weight.

Remembering the I970s, after teaching school September to June, my training was consistent but contingent on my strength and energy reserves. After school let out I was free to pursue workouts full time with Arnold as training partner, who didn't have to do much work for a living.

I dived into heavy poundages like my peers were using and before long my back and neck were hurting. Living in a Santa Monica apartment 2 blocks from Arnold, he'd drive to my place and give me a vigorous neck/shoulder massage, easing my pain to make it through.

Afterwards I developed a simple guideline. If something hurts, don't do it. I know, I know, even the great Arnold has often said 'no pain, no gain' but take it from me, there are certain kinds of pains you do not need. The 'pain' of rigid discipline is good. The 'pain' of skipping desert is good. The 'pain' of not going out drinking with buddies so you can hit the gym early the next morning is good. The pain of your joint grating as you do a forced rep with excessive weight is extremely harmful!

Heeding this advise will make you much more successful long term. It is ok to be sore a day after intense training but it is not ok to continue doing an exercise that feels painful in the moment.

Truly Effective Body Building by Frank Zane


Change only comes through awareness. Before you can change something you must now what it actually looks like in the present. This is actually harder than it seems. A body that is changing as you train is a reflection of progress. To track this progress the following two things are important.

The first is keep a written record of all your workouts, exercises, weights, sets and reps. Also track your diet in writing and look up the calorie values of everything you eat. Sound like a lot of work' It is less work than you think once you get into the habit of doing it and will enable you to effectively compare you past and present look.

In bodybuilding it's important to learn to see yourself as others see your body. Looking in the mirror is not enough, you see what you expect to see. Taking photographs is the best method. I've done this in the past, especially when preparing for competition and even now when I have a distinct goal in mind that I'm training to reach. Every 3 to 4 weeks out comes the camera to give me proof of my progress. Seeing how your body is improving is the best ongoing motivation you can have to sustain your training drive.

With the advent of digital cameras keeping record of progress becomes very easy. You have someone take your photos in relaxed front, side, and back positions and with hands on hips from the front, arms flexed from the front and back. Outdoors is best when the sun is at a 45 to 60 degree angle with the horizon so there are no distinct shadows on the body. I've always preferred 9 am to 11 am depending on the season. Try to duplicate the lighting conditions each time so you can get accurate comparisons.

Most people who train are only incidentally aware of their improvement. Their trousers may become loose around the waist, they may drop a few pounds on the scale, their friends my mention they look younger. But photos don't lie and they should become part of the archives of your progress. Digital photos can be stored on CDs and last forever. You'll be glad you did this later on and these records will become valuable. Mine have.

As you mature in your years and continue to train you will want to be mindful of some of the following issues. How often you train, how many sets, repetitions you perform for a given exercise and most important the kind of diet you follow. Another important question is: Should you use supplements'

As I age I have resorted to training less. Call it the curse of old age but I've noticed that I develop more soreness, and take longer to recover from workouts. I use this as a gauge to determine how often I should train. Sometimes I have to rest up to six days between training sessions! One interesting thing I've observed is when I train with clients, the sore feeling disappears shortly after starting the work out.

I was in the best shape of my life since my competition days but I realized that age was taking its toll on me and I could not do as much as during my competition days. Now that I'm in my mid 60's I've slowed down even more. What follows is a set of general guidelines for how often you should train at a given age.

Age And BodyBuilding Part 2 by Frank Zane


I stated in my book Fabulously Fit Forever that a man in his twenties can train up to 6 days a week. A man in his thirties should train no more than 5 times a week and a man in his 40s no more than 5 times a week. If you are 50 reduce it to 3 days and if you are 60 reduce it even further to 2 days a week and finally only train heavily one day a week in your 70s. This, of course, does not include other forms of recreational exercise such as walking or hobbies.

A man in his seventies could do a full workout once weekly and other forms of non weight training twice a week while a man in his sixties could do an an upper body workout and one lower body work out each week. The sixty something could, in addition, do two recreational exercises.

The fact is, the longer you rest between workouts the better the quality of your next workout, you will be stronger and have more energy. Up to a point that is ... after a certain length of not training you should consider yourself on a layoff. This is counter-productive from a progress standpoint. Layoffs are necessary, especially when injury or overtraining occurs. I find the following two types of layoffs to work best:

1. A three day layoff. This is a good length of time to abstain from training to recuperate from overtraining or heal a minor injury. Applying ice to the injury is a good therapeutic idea throughout this short layoff period.

2. A week layoff: Do this every couple of months to give your body complete rest. If you travel for business or take a vacation this is a good time to do it. If you also sleep a lot during this period when you return to the gym you will feel rejuvenated.

When you take a whole week off you feel rejuvenated and are much stronger the next time you hit the gym. For the first time you workout after the layoff I suggest gradually easing yourself in by doing lighter weights and then gradually increasing each time afterwards.

Workout Routines: How To Grip Part 1 by Frank Zane


The way in which you grip dumbbells and workout bars makes a difference in the effectiveness of each exercise you perform. The most common ways to grip are:

a. Under hand grips: Your palms face away from your body

2. Underhand grip: Where palms are facing away from your body

3. Mixed Grip: Where one hand faces your body and the other hand faces away from your body

d. Neutral grip: Your palms face each other.

The different styles have pluses and minus for specific exercises. Below is a list of some of them and advice on when best to use each one.

Pronation means turning your wrist inward as you move it toward your body, and supination is turning wrist outward as you move it toward your body. Using an overhand grip when gripping a bar keeps your hands in the same position when you do exercises like reverse curls, and this is fine.

When you do exercises like pulldowns, wide grip chin ups, bent over barbell rows, your wrists will pronate when you pull the weight toward your body, particularly if your thumbs are wrapped around the bar.

One serious disadvantage of this is that it can lead to injuries on the elbow�the outer elblow in particular. Unfortunately I had to learn this through experience having sustained injuries for years.

Conversely, with the underhand grip, at the start when you grip the bar and as you pull the weight towards you, your wrists are in a supinated position. This puts a great deal of stress on the inner elbow and lower biceps. Again, I learned this from making the mistake-the resulting injury takes a long time to heal. (I found the way to heal this injury is by doing high reps on barbell wrist curl with a light weight).

You Can Easily Lose Weight If You Want by George Hutton


Many people, actually most people today are overweight, or worse, clinically obese. There are many possible reasons for this, and we could go on and on trying to point the finger at one industry after another, but that wouldn't do us much good. The truth of the matter is that once you take responsibility for the shape and appearance of your body, the easier it will be to get to where you want to go.

If you want to lose weight, and chances are you do, then there are really only two ways to go about it. One is to eat less, or eat healthier, and the other is to exercise. Healthy food intake is a vastly complicated issue, so I won't linger on ideas about avoiding fast food or other popular topics. I'm sure you know all about that.

What I'd like to talk about is a form of exercise that you may have overlooked. One you perhaps may have seen others doing, and inwardly laughed, not knowing the true benefits they were receiving. I'm talking about the age old exercise of walking. Yes, that's right. Putting one foot in front of the other, again and again. It may not seem like much, but walking can do quite a lot for your metabolism, your health and your self esteem.

First of all, walking is incredibly easy. I may even so be so bold as to suggest that you have known how to walk for most of your life. Probably your whole life, when you think about it. Walking uses your largest muscles, the ones in your legs. Walking doesn't require any special equipment, except a pair of shoes, some shorts and a T-shirt. Even the shoes are optional.

Walking is also extremely addictive. Once you get into the habit of walking every day, you'll be amazed how much you'll look forward to doing it. Many people in substance abuse recovery programs use walking as away to reduce stress, and eliminate cravings. Walking can bring incredible peace of mind, and has been known to be a source of massive creativity. Many of the worlds greatest thinkers got many of their ideas and insights while walking.

If you are in need to lose a couple pounds, give walking a try. You'll be amazed how quickly you get the hang of it, and how well it can help reduce the stress. And when you consider that many times we overeat because we are suffering from too much stress, this can have the powerful side effect of reducing your caloric intake. Walking will benefit you in ways you haven't even begun to think about yet.

How to Locate Quality Dentists in Seattle Washington by Ron Warner


If you're new in Seattle or if you can't even remember when you last visited your dentist, you need to take some time researching for the best professional in the area. You cannot just settle for someone whose background you 're not even sure of. You'll always want to make sure that you are leaving the care of your teeth to someone who is a professional, no less.

Believe it or not, there are some out there who care nothing for your teeth or your health as they are simply in the business for the money. Those are the ones that you will want to avoid at any cost. A cheap price is not worth putting your health on the line for.

If you are unable to get a lot of help that way, you might want to try talking with your co-worker or even your boss as they may know someone who would be a great choice for you. Ask everyone about the prices, the practices and the personality of this person. Learning this information will help you out a lot when it comes to finding the right professional for you.

If you are just moving to the area and do not know many people, asking for word of mouth referrals may prove to be a little difficult. You can inquire from your current dentist about any dental practitioner he may know in Seattle, Washington. Usually, if you're just within the State, your dentist could help you find one. When all else fails, you could always visit a local dental college, as they are generally able to provide services at a much cheaper rate. Some would even offer useful free services such as cleanings. To find the dental schools that are closest to you, simply search online or in your local yellow pages.

While you may not be able to tell from an advertisement whether or not the dentist is an outstanding professional, you, can at least, discover who is in your area and maybe get some information on the cost of their services. At the very least, this is a good starting point. You may have to visit a few different clinics before you find the one that you are comfortable enough returning to time and time again. It may take some time and effort on your part, but it will be well worth it finding the right one in Seattle Washington. Once you find the perfect one, you will be able to refer your friends and family to him or her so that they do not have to go through all of the trouble you did.

Be Your Own Herbal Expert - Pt 4 by Susun Weed


Herbal medicine is the medicine of the people. It is simple, safe, effective, and free. Our ancestors used - and our neighbors around the world still use - plant medicines for healing and health maintenance. It's easy. You can do it too.

In your first lessons, you learned how to "listen" to the messages of plant's tastes, how to make effective water-based herbal remedies, and how to distinguish safe nourishing and tonifying herbs from the more dangerous stimulating and sedating herbs.

In this lesson, you will learn how to how make herbal tinctures. You will make tinctures from fresh and dried roots as well as from fresh flowers and leaves.

Then you will collect your tinctures into an Herbal Medicine Chest and begin to use them. Shall we begin?

TINCTURES ACT FAST

Tinctures are alcohol-based plant medicines. Alcohol extracts and concentrates many properties from plants, including their poisons. Alcohol does not extract significant amounts of nutrients, so tinctures are used when we want to stimulate, sedate, or make use of a poison. (Remember that nourishing herbs are best used in water bases such as infusions and vinegars.)

The concentrated nature of tinctures allows them to act quickly. It also makes them perfect for a first-aid kit or herbal medicine chest: a little goes a long way.

I have dozens of tinctures in my cabinet. But these are the ones I carry with me when I travel; they are the ones I don't leave home without. This is my traveling herbal medicine chest.

Echinacea tincture Motherwort tincture Skullcap tincture

Ginseng tincture Dandelion root tincture Wormwood tincture

St Joan's Wort tincture Poke root tincture (danger) Yarrow tincture

MAKING DRIED ROOT TINCTURES

I strongly prefer to make tinctures from fresh plants. But many people have a hard time getting fresh plants. Most books therefore ignore fresh plant tinctures and focus on making tinctures only from dried plants. The only dried plant parts I use to make tinctures are roots and seeds. All other plant parts I use fresh when making a tincture. And I actually prefer to use fresh roots too.

To make a tincture from dried roots:

* Buy an ounce of dried Echinacea augustifolia or Panax ginseng root.

* Put the whole ounce in a pint jar.

* The dried root should fill the jar about a third full. If not, use a smaller jar.

* Fill the jar to the top with the alcohol. Cap tightly and label.

Almost any alcohol can be used to make a tincture. My preference is 100 proof vodka. A lower proof, such as 80 proof, does not work nearly as well. Higher proofs, such as 198 proof or Everclear, can damage the liver and kidneys, so I don't use them to make medicine.

The tincture is ready in six weeks, but gets stronger the longer it sits. I like to wait about six months before using my ginseng tincture and a year before using my echinacea tincture.

MAKING FRESH ROOT TINCTURES

Roots generally hold their properties even when dried. But two of my favorite root tinctures must be made from fresh roots are the dried ones have lost much of their effect.

Making a tincture with a fresh root is similar to making one with a dried root.

* With great respect for the plant, dig up its root.

* Gently rinse mud away. (For more about digging dandelion root, see Healing Wise.)

* Chop root into small pieces and fill a jar to the top with the chopped root.

* Fill jar to the top with alcohol. Cap tightly. Label.

* Fresh root tinctures are ready to use in six weeks.

MAKING FRESH LEAF AND FLOWER TINCTURES

I use only fresh flowers and leaves in my tinctures. These delicate plant parts lose aroma and medicinal qualities when dried.

Tinctures can be made from dried herbs, but I find them inferior in both effect (how well they work) and energetics (how many fairies are in it), not to mention taste (how many volatile substances remain) and somatics (how something makes you "feel").

What if the plants you need to make all the tinctures in your medicine chest don't grow where you live or you can't find them? Try one or more of these solutions.

* Take a vacation to a place where the plant you need does grow. And make sure to go at the best time to gather it.

* Find an herbal pen-pal who lives in the area where the plant you want to tincture grows. Have your pen-pal make a tincture of the fresh plant for you. You could make a tincture of something you have lots of to give to her too.

Even if the plants do grow where you live, it may take a year or longer for you to find them, harvest them and make tinctures. While you are "in limbo," it's fine to buy tinctures to use in your herbal medicine chest.

When you finally find the plants you want, don't be afraid to make several quarts of tincture. Tinctures last for hundreds of years if protected from heat and light.

St. Joan's wort tincture: Eases muscles spasms, anti-viral, pain-relieving.

* Pick yellow Hypericum perforatum flowers in the summer's heat.

* Fill - don't stuff - a jar with the blossoms and leaves.

* Fill jar to the top with alcohol. Cap tightly. Label. (It will turn bright red.)

* Your fresh St. Joan's wort tincture is ready to use in six weeks.

Motherwort tincture: Eases menstrual cramps, mood swings, stress.

* Pick Leonurus cardiaca flowering tops (leaves and flowers) in early fall or late summer.

* Fill - don't stuff - a jar with coarsely chopped blossoms and leaves.

* Fill jar to the top with alcohol. Cap tightly. Label.

* Your fresh motherwort tincture is ready to use in six weeks.

Skullcap tincture: Pain-relief, headache remedy.

* Pick Scutellaria lateriflora flowering tops when there are seeds as well as flowers.

* Fill - don't stuff - a jar with the blossoms and leaves.

* Fill jar to the top with alcohol. Cap tightly. Label.

* Your fresh skullcap tincture is ready to use in six weeks.

Wormwood tincture: Counters food poisoning and parasites.

* Pick Artemisia absinthemum leaves in the late summer or early fall, when mature.

* Fill - don't stuff - a jar, with the coarsely chopped leaves.

* Fill jar to the top with alcohol. Cap tightly. Label.

* Your fresh wormwood tincture is ready to use in six weeks.

Yarrow tincture: Counters all bacteria internally and externally, repels insects.

* Pick Achillea millefolium flowering tops, white ones only, when in bloom.

* Fill - don't stuff - a jar, with the coarsely chopped herb.

* Fill jar to the top with alcohol. Cap tightly. Label.

* Your fresh yarrow tincture is ready to use in six weeks.

DOUBLE AND TRIPLE TINCTURES

An herbalist in Austin Texas shared her special way of preparing a tincture that helps her keep her cool in stressful situations. She tinctures fresh lemon balm, gathered before it flowers, for six weeks, in 100 proof vodka. She pours that tincture over a new jar of fresh lemon balm leaves. After that sits for six more weeks, it's a double tincture. She then pours the double tincture over another new jarful of fresh lemon balm and lets that sit for six weeks. After which she has a triple tincture. She uses: "A dropperful sublingually - works absolute wonders for me when I'm stressed out and ready to scream."

PLANT POISONS

You remember that there are four types of poisons in plants: alkaloids, glycosides, essential oils, and resins. The first three are fairly easy to move from plants to a tincture.

Resins, because they "fear" water (hydrophobic) are difficult to tincture. When I want to tincture a resin I do use high proof alcohol. Some examples would be: pine resin tincture, balsam bud tincture, calendula flower tincture.

TAKING TINCTURES

I see many people put herbal tinctures under their tongues. I prefer to protect my oral tissues from the harsh, possibly cancer-causing, effects of the alcohol.

I dilute my tinctures in a little water or juice or even herbal infusion and drink them.

USING YOUR TINCTURES

Here are a few of the ways I use the tinctures in my herbal medicine chest. For more information on using these tincture, see my books and my website.

Acid indigestion: 5-10 drops of Dandelion root or Wormwood tincture every ten minutes until relieved. I use a dose of Dandelion before meals to prevent heartburn.

Bacterial infections (including boils, carbuncles, insect bites, snake bite, spider bite, staph): 30 50 drops Echinacea or Yarrow tincture up to 5 times daily. For severe infections, add one drop of Poke tincture to each dose.

Colds: to prevent them I use Yarrow tincture 5-10 drops daily; to treat them, I rely on Yarrow, but in larger quantity, say a dropperful every 3-4 hours at the worst of the cold and tapering off.

Cramps during menstruation: 10 drops Motherwort every 20 minutes or as needed. Used also as a tonic, 10 drops daily, for the week before.

Cramps in muscle: 25 drops St Joan's every 25 30 minutes for as long as needed.

Cramps in gut: 5 10 drops Wormwood, once.

Diarrhea: 3 drops Wormwood hourly for up to four hours.

Energy, lack of: 10 drops of Dandelion or Ginseng tincture in the morning.

Fever: 1 drop Echinacea for every 2 pounds of body weight; taken every two hours to begin, decreasing as symptoms remiss. Or a dropperful of Yarrow tincture every four hours.

Headache: 25 drops St Joan's plus 3-5 drops Skullcap every 10 15 minutes for up to two hours. 5 drops of Skullcap may prevent some headaches.

High blood pressure: 25 drops of Motherwort or Ginseng tincture 2-4 times a day.

Hot Flashes: 20 30 drops Motherwort as flash begins and/or 10 20 drops once or twice daily.

Insect: prevent bites from black flies, mosquitoes, and ticks with a spray of Yarrow tincture; treat bites you do get with Yarrow tincture to prevent infection.

Nervousness, hysteria, hyper behavior: 15 drops Motherwort every 15 20 minutes.

Premenstrual distress: 10 drops Motherwort twice a day for 7 10 days preceding menstruation or 10 drops daily all month.

Sore throat: Gargle with Yarrow tincture.

Swollen glands: 1 drop Poke root tincture each 12 hours for 2-5 days.

Viral infections (including colds and the flu): 25 drops of St. Joan's wort tincture every two hours. Add one drop of poke root tincture 2-4 times a day for severe cases.

Wounds: I wash with Yarrow tincture, then wet the dressing with Yarrow tincture, too.

Choose one plant and make several small tinctures of it using different types of alcohol. Taste and smell each tincture every week or so for 6-8 weeks.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER TWO

Buy or make different tinctures of the same plant: dried herb, fresh herb, timed with the moon, in different menstrums, made by different people, harvested in different places. Can you taste differences? Are the effects different? What else do you notice?

EXPERIMENT NUMBER THREE

Make a double or triple tincture of motherwort, skullcap, or lemon balm. See if it relieves anxiety, hyperactivity, emotional distress, headaches. I use a dose of 5-30 drops. Remember skullcap can induce sleepiness.

Tincture four plants that are common to your area. Learn at least three things they can each be used for and if at all possible, use them.

Blackhead Removal: How To Use Steam To Rid Yourselves Of These Unsightly Menaces Of The Skin by George Hutton


Almost everybody will get acne at some point in their life. Acne is one of those things that everybody gets, but nobody wants. Some people get lucky, and only suffer a little bit, while others aren't so lucky and have acne for several years. One of the worst kinds of acne is blackheads. One because they are so obvious, and two because they can be so difficult to remove. But believe it or not, blackhead removal is not impossible.

First of all, it helps to understand what a blackhead actually is. Because they are black, many people assume they are somehow related to dirt. This is a commonly held myth that isn't true. Blacks are black due to the oxidation of the underside of the top portion. In that sense they are most easily removed by the same methods that will get rid of other acne and pimples. Here are some good ideas.

Steam. This will go a great deal to open your pores. If you have access to a steam bath, these can be fantastic. Even if you don't have a steam bath, you can make a small, temporary one. Fill your sink with hot water, and put a big towel over your head, and lean over the sink. Keep the sink full, and the water running. Be very cautious not to splash hot water on your face.

Put your face into the steam until you really start to feel some sweat. This signifies that your pores are happily open, and the skin is hot and flexible. This may take a few minutes, but the longer you can keep you face in the steam, the better. The water will both moisturize your skin as well as open up your pores.

Once you've had enough, then it's time to really clean your face while the pores are still open. Use a gentle soap and water solution, and use a sponge that isn't too rough. It may seem like a paradox, but you can scrub your skin too hard, and it actually may cause more pimples. After you have cleaned your face thoroughly, then apply whatever daily cream you are using to combat acne and blackheads.

Blackheads are one thing that is the most dreaded of all acne, and the good news it that there are plenty of ways to get rid of them. Once you know what they are, you are well on your way to treating them and getting the clean, smooth skin that you deserve.
