Help for Diabetes, Gout and More

Help for Diabetes, Gout and More
 by: Loring Windblad

Overview of Gout
Gout is a systemic disease caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain. This condition can develop for two reasons. The liver may produce more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine, or a diet of rich foods (e.g., red meat, cream sauces, red wine) puts more uric acid into the bloodstream than the kidneys can filter. In both cases, a condition called hyperuricemia results. Over time, the uric acid crystallizes and settles in the joint spaces, most commonly in the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of the big toe or in the ankle joint.
Signs and Symptoms
The most common symptoms of gout are inflammation, swelling, and tenderness in the joint of the first toe. Touching or moving it is intensely painful and patients often say it hurts to have as much as a bedsheet over the toe. Gout develops quickly and typically occurs in only one joint at a time. Symptoms may develop in two or three joints simultaneously, but this is rare. If widespread symptoms occur, the condition is probably not gout.
Diagnosis
The most reliable way to diagnose gout is to examine the joint fluid for uric acid crystals. This is done by drawing fluid from the joint with a needle and examining it under a polarized light microscope. Although the test is invasive, the results are definitive, and a positive result facilitates proper treatment and quick relief.
Treatment
Treatment for gout involves decreasing the amount of uric acid in the joint. If dietary habits are the cause, the patient's lifestyle must be changed to avoid the condition. Gout is readily corrected with patient cooperation, and it is usually not treated unless it occurs frequently. Colchicine is a common medication for treating acute gout attacks. If continuous medication is necessary, the two most common choices are probenecid and allopurinol.
Prevention
Alcohol and rich foods are primary contributors to excessive uric acid levels. Although some patients have a genetic predisposition to excessive uric acid production, most gout patients have normal kidneys and uncontrolled dietary habits. Prevention is the best defense against the disease.
Many patients who suffer from gout continue to indulge, and suffer frequent attacks as a result. Although medication makes it possible to live with gout, the continued accumulation of uric acid in the joints eventually damages them, seriously inhibiting movement.
Overview of Diabetes
New to diabetes? Learn the basics – check with your local diabetes clinic or research it on the internet.
A key to diabetes management is maintaining a regular exercise program. Its never too late to start – see below. Sticking to dietary goals while eating out also can be very challenging – see comments below.
20 million Americans and Canadians have diabetes. Nearly 7 million don't know it. Type 2 diabetes usually develops slowly, and the symptoms often go unnoticed. Our son developed a puffiness to his face which we noticed right away because we saw him only a couple of times a year. He and his wife put it down to simple weight gain. After 2Ѕ years they finally snapped to there being something wrong and when he was finally checked out his diabetes was "off the charts". Fortunately, they caught it in time, but it should have been caught over a year earlier.
Nearly 90 to 95% of all people with diabetes have type 2. Who gets it? Just about any body. Fat, skinny, regular build, it makes no difference; just about everyone can develop diabetes. Most at risk are people regardless of body build who live on a high intake of "junk food". Least at risk are people who eat a regular balanced diet.
What you may not know about diabetes – the truth about insulin resistance. 92% of people with type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance. Get the facts – go to your local diabetes agency or research it on the internet.
Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetes. Obesity is not a guarantee you will develop diabetes and many obese persons never develop it, but persons who are obese
Diabetic meals can be healthy and savory.
A key to diabetes management is maintaining a regular exercise program. Its never too late to start and you can do it with a simple walking program. Just walk 1 kilometer a day and over a period of a month build it up to two miles (3 kilometers) a day.
Sticking to dietary goals while eating out can be very challenging. Many, even most, restaurants cater to people with special dietary needs – just ask. And learn those restaurants which do not and avoid them.
When it comes to diabetic nutrition, not sure what to believe? There are many stories out there, some believable, others not. Research what you need to know from trusted resources – your local diabetes support center, the internet, friends who have diabetes.
The help of friends and family can make all the difference to someone with diabetes.

Atkins Diet Yes or No

Atkins Diet Yes or No
 by: Loring Windblad

As of now, January 2005, more than half of all north Americans are struggling with obesity. The "quick fix" for "fat" for the last 40+ years, becoming ever more popular, has become the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet was first popularized in the U. S. Air Force during the 1960's.
The Atkins Diet is very simple --- restrict your carbohydrate intake. And guess what? It actually works. But Dr. Atkins, after the initial few years of his popularized diet, began to make modifications and refinements to the original basic diet. And several other people have taken the basic Atkins Diet, modified it just a little, and come up with a new and very workable diet.
The first thing you must understand is that, across the entire human spectrum, each of us is very different from one another in the chemical makeup of our body. Thus, each of us, individually, should have our own highly personalized, custom built diet, created by a dietician using a chemical makeup assessment, usually a $200 hair analysis, of our particular body type and individual nutritional needs. So far as I know, this technology and this type dietary assessment is still available only through certain holistic health practitioners and it is becoming more and more expensive. As an example, it typically costs now between $200 and $300, whereas in the mid-1970's it cost between $100 and $150.
There are three major misconceptions to the Atkins diet. The first common myth is many people believe this means don't worry about the amount of calories or fat you eat so long as its not carbs. The second common myth is many people believe all carbohydrates are equally bad. The third common myth is that the Atkins "Lo-Carb" diet is actually a "Hi-Protein" diet. All of these, however, are enormous misconceptions.
The first myth: many dieters who use this program believe that calories and fat do not matter when eating low carb food, but in some cases this has proven to be fatal. Depending upon your particular body chemistry, when eating high fat food your cholesterol could climb and climb, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Also, it has now been proven that the older we become the less our body is able to metabolize the "high fat" portion of the Atkins "lo carb" diet, leading to additional dietary and health problems.
The second myth: The Atkins Diet is actually a "Lo-Carb" diet, not a "No-Carb" diet. What should be cut out are breads, rice and potatoes. Fresh fruits and vegetables should not be cut back and many should be somewhat increased. Finally, after the first month you can "safely" add breads and potatos --- in limited quantities. One friend of mine eats 1 bite of breads/toasts, etc., served with his meals, such as garlic breads. One bite and not a morsel more.
The third myth: Mention the Atkins Diet and most people's reaction is "Oh, yes, the 'high protein' diet." Not true at all --- it's a "Low Carb" diet – protein intake remains unchanged. Some carbs only, not all, are restricted (versus eliminated completely); fats, particularly in older people, need to be restricted; protein should be kept to 4-6 ounce portions per meal, the lower values for breakfast and lunch. What you need to increase is your intake of high-fiber foods such as celery, etc.
The reason why the Atkins Diet works is because your body metabolizes its stored fat (carbohydrates) in order to burn --- digest --- the protein, fiber and fat you are eating. The Atkins Dieters tend to leave out several food groups, including fruit and vegetables, since they are "high carb food", and then tend to grab a steak instead, which has very low carbohydrates.
This is ridiculous. Why? Because the elimination of carbohydrates and the reduction of the fresh fruits and vegetables actually throws your health into a major imbalance. Overloading your unbalanced diet by an excess of protein intake (adding that steak, above) to "increase the volume" to a satisfying level merely exacerbates this imbalance.
The true danger of the Atkins Diet, however, lies in the fact that, for people who already have health challenges, the Atkins Diet actually worsens some conditions and creates other health challenges that did not exist before the Atkins Diet. The worst of these is Gout. If you have a tendency to suffer gout, no matter how well controlled you have it, a strict Atkins Diet will create a severe gout condition and gout attack for you. If you merely had the tendency for gout with no active gout, the Atkins Diet will precipitate an actual condition of gout in your body. A severe case of gout requires medical intervention to correct as well as long-term dietary control and change. The long-term danger of gout is an increased tendency for heart attack and stroke. See Native's Gift for one proven help for gout.
If your body type and chemical makeup is suitable for the Atkins Diet then by all means use it. Remember that there are several similar alternatives out there which may be more suitable than a strict Atkins, to include some of Dr. Atkins own later work and recommendations. If you have health challenges, to include a tendency for gout or actually suffer from gout, or have diabetes or any of several other disorders, the Atkins diet is definitely something you need to avoid.
And not just the Atkins Diet. Any and all diets which highly restrict or eliminate one of the essential food groups we all need to maintain optimal health is equally bad. Stop the insanity and use a REAL diet --- the only proven diet which will work for virtually everyone.
What is it? Its actually two things: A food diet and exercise – yes, simple exercise, like walking a mile a day. A completely balanced, restricted calorie, diet containing a little bit of everything. Eat three meals a day, get your sweets, carbs, veggies, fruits, juices, protein and keep it to 1200 calories a day. Eat your breakfast and go out and walk the dog – if you don't have one, take your neighbor's. Give this diet a year of your life, weigh yourself every Monday and keep track of your weight, see where you are with it…..and make the change for the rest of your life. When you get to your target weight you may increase the diet to 1600 calories a day.

New Sources of Hyaluronic Acid Provide Hope for Increased Availability - Hyaluronic Acid Injection Restylane ° Announces New Rewards Program

New Sources of Hyaluronic Acid Provide Hope for Increased Availability - Hyaluronic Acid Injection Restylane ® Announces New Rewards Program
 by: Jana Willinger

E-Hyaluronicacid.com announced recently that research continues into the purification of Hyaluronic acid from the vitreous humor of fish. This method is highly efficient and easier than derivation from rooster combs and other sources. In other news, Medicis, the maker of the Restylane ® Hyaluronic acid injection, announced a new rewards program, providing benefits to frequent customers.
Scientists have pinpointed a way to derive highly pure Hyaluronic acid from the vitreous humor of fish. This method has the potential to be extremely important for the commercial Hyaluronic acid market as it provides an easy, safe and economical way to synthesize high amounts of Hyaluronic acid. If patent approved, the process could make Hyaluronic acid products even more readily available and could help scientists in the search for uses of Hyaluronic acid other than Hyaluronic acid injections, supplements, beauty products, liquids and serums.
In related news, Medecis, the maker of the Hyaluronic acid injection, Restylane, announced a new consumer incentive program. Consumers will receive an initial reward upon proof of their first visit, and subsequent rewards for Restylane treatments within six-month intervals. For each qualifying treatment, participants will receive rewards ranging from $25 select retailer gift cards to $100 spa gift certificates. The Restylane Hyaluronic acid injection rewards program is the first ever offered for a cosmetic procedure.
Restylane is the first non-animal stabilized Hyaluronic acid ("HA") filler for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. The incentive program was developed to reward loyal Hyaluronic acid injection, Restylane consumers for adhering to a semi-annual treatment schedule, designed to ensure optimal results and maximize patient satisfaction.

Living With A Heart Problem

Living With A Heart Problem
 by: Drew Masters

Living a healthy life is something that everyone wants because a person does not need to worry about his or her condition much. However, this is only possible if one has been looking after him or her self. If not, one is liable to face severe consequences. This means that if one suffers a heart attack because of not being careful with the simplest of things, there is need for him or her to take even greater care.
Life after a heart attack is different; it cannot be the same because of the fact that one has lived through a life-taking condition. A person with a heart problem also has to take care of his or her diet, and if one does not manage to do so, it is obvious that their risks of having worse conditions are worsened. Often these types of people are restricted from most sports, and only brisk walking is allowed at the most.

Is The FDA Really Looking Out For You? Part 2

Is The FDA Really Looking Out For You? Part 2
 by: Lee Cummings

As reported in the Los Angeles Times article on 2/19/05 "Suspect painkillers win fda panel ok", The fda advisory panel "voted Friday, to let Doctors prescribe COX-2 painkillers, including Celebrex and Vioxx, but recommended stronger warnings about the risk of heart attacks and strokes."
Even after Merck removed Vioxx from the shelves last fall, And even after Celebrex and Bextra have also been proven to increase heart attacks, stroke and death, the fda advisory panel now says that it is ok to sell these drugs and other COX-2 inhibitors, and they should only carry the "black box" warning.
To say that this is confusing and dangerous to the public is an understatement.
Because the fact of the matter is there are many people who naively think that if the fda approves something, it must be safe. They don't question this at all. They blindly follow the advice of their doctor and the fda. These are the people who are most at risk.
To quote the article,
"The panel proposed that Celebrex, Vioxx and Bextra, the third COX-2 drug cleared by the fda, carry the "black box" warnings - the strongest admonishment the fda can give to Doctors."
Let's look at the word Admonishment.
Admonishment – as defined in The American Heritage Dictionary –
"To reprove mildly or kindly but seriously" and
"To counsel against something; caution"
Hardly a strongly worded "warning" to give to Doctors. We're talking about heart attacks, stroke And death. This is not a "watch your step" precautionary suggestion.
What the fda is telling the public is that it is ok to take this class of drugs and risk your health or even death. Long term use of COX-2 drugs can also raise your blood pressure.
The article also states – "In the case of Vioxx – which was taken off the market voluntarily in the fall by its maker, Merck, after a company sponsored study confirmed the dangers – panel members voted to approve its use by a margin of two votes."
Does this really seem safe to you?
I'm not sure when you'll be asking yourself, "Is the fda really looking out for my health?"
Are you aware that the COX-2 enzyme is a form of the cyclooxygenase enzyme and is produced by your body and plays an important role by helping to prevent blood clotting?
Why would you suppress this important function of the body with drugs?
Better, safer ways to combat pain and joint pain in particular exist which are less expensive and readily available without a prescription.
You can evaluate them with a Doctor who is knowledge- able about food, supplements and herbs and decide what is right for You.
Foods, supplements and herbs which you can easily incorporate into your diet to help reduce your pain and inflammation:
Ginger
Garlic
Hot Pepper
Turmeric
Rosemary
Oregano
Green Tea – contains 51 inflammation inhibiting Compounds like salicylic acid and polyphenols.
Fresh cold water fish like salmon and sardines, which are highin omega-3 fatty acids which are a natural oil for your joints and help reduce inflammation.
Other foods which are high in omega-3 fats:
Grass fed beef which is also high in omega-3 fats
Nuts - Brazil, walnuts, almonds, pecans and hazelnuts. As well as seeds – like sunflower seeds and flaxseed.
Mother natures supplements to ease joint pain and inflammation:
Glucosamine – an amino sugar and key component of cartilage. Must be combined with the next 2 for best results.
Boswellin – an Indian herb which reduces inflammation causing complex carbs
Msm – Methyl-sulfonylmethane – an organic source of the mineral sulfur.
The above 3 are best used together for optimum results.
Vitamins C and D – both have been clinically proven to reduce osteoarthritis and joint stiffness and inflammation.
Fish oil tablets - also high in omega-3 fats.
You can even swim and exercise in water to go easy on your joints.
Now go out and take action to reduce your pain safely, Naturally and inexpensively.

Healing with Cell Salts, Don't Cell Yourself Short!

Healing with Cell Salts, Don't Cell Yourself Short!
 by: Katherine Sabathie

Doctor W. H. Schuessler an early nineteenth Century physiological chemist and physicist identified 12 "tissue salts" in every human cell.
These tissue salts or "cell salts" are vital mineral constituents of the body. By combining with organic substances in the body they produce and maintain the health of the human tissue cells. Deficiency or imbalances of these cell salts could result in illness.
Dr Schuessler noted that lacking in any of these salts, a loss of health occurred and once the deficiency or imbalance was corrected the body could heal itself.
It is important to note that the "Schuessler's Bio chemic cell salts" are not drugs, but valuable micro dose cell foods prepared homoeopathically. This form ensures rapid and easy assimilation, for the speedy restoration of the natural balance of the body system.
Tissue Salts at a Glance
1. Calc Flour Relaxed conditions, muscular weakness, poor circulation, dental decay, cracks in the skin.
2. Calc Phos. Ill-nourished states, indigestion, chilblains, lowered vitality
3. Calc Sulph. Skin ailments, spots, pimples, and wounds that are slow to heal. Has a cleansing action and works well with Kali Mur. And Nat. Sulph.
4. Ferr. Phos. Respiratory ailments, inflammations and congestions, throbbing headaches, feverishness, sore throats,
5. Kali. Mur. Congested conditions, thick whitish discharges, respiratory ailments, coughs, colds (alternate with Ferr. Phos.)
6. Kali Phos Nervous tension, brain-fag, depression, fretfulness, nervous headaches.
7. Kali Sulph. Skin ailments, disorders of the scalp, hair, nails and mucous membranes. Catarrh with sticky discharge.
8. Mag Phos. Spasmodic, darting pains, cramp, flatulence, neuralgia
9. Nat Mur. Dryness or excessive moisture in any parts of the body, running colds, loss of smell and taste.
10. Nat Phos. Acidity, stomach upsets, heartburn, mal assimilation, and rheumatic ailments.
11. Nat Sulph Biliousness, liver upsets, influenza, water retention, rheumatic ailments.
12. Silica Pus formation, boils, styles, crippled and brittle nails, scalp disorders.
Selecting the Remedy and Directions
The key to success in using the Schuessler therapy is the accurate linking of the symptoms with the appropriate tissue-salt. Symptoms are significant pointers to the tissue-salt needed in any given case. Each of the tissue-salts has its own distinct symptoms 'picture', i.e., the spasm, cramps and neuralgias of Mag Phos., acidity which points to Nat Phos., excess dryness or watery discharges which call for Nat Mur. And so on.
Directions
Definitions: 'Acute' means of sudden onset and short duration.
'Chronic' means of long continuance, lingering.
A 'chronic' ailment may have 'acute' phases and for such phases the directions for acute conditions will apply.
Dose
In general, an adult dose is four tablets, children two tablets. The tablets could be dissolved on the tongue, or in the case of very young children, may be given dissolved in a little warm water.
Frequency of Dose
In chronic cases, three doses daily will suffice, but for acute conditions, a dose should be taken every half hour until relief is obtained; thereafter the frequency of dose should be gradually reduced to three times daily.

Men.s Health - Importance Of Walking

Men's Health - Importance Of Walking
 by: Drew Masters

In an article titled, 'Stride with Pride', written by anonymous author, one may read how important the simple exercise of walking can be for all individuals, in particular today's generation of men as they seem to be in pursuit of a leisurely life as compared to their elder generation.
Some of the most common and perhaps truly fruitful benefits of walking include its utility as an excellent form of transport, totally making the individual independent of all sorts of hassles and worries (such as the rising prices of gas, and public bus fares).
The issues and problems associated with owning and keeping other transport such as a bike or even a car are another set, which is more than eliminated by walking.
Not only is the practice of walking totally free and handy, it is also a convenient means to getting to and returning from a particular destination. (Of course locations at a distance would have to be covered through other means of transport).
Yet another benefit of walking is the relief one gets, such as being stress free, as walking relieves an individual of most if not all the worries. In addition, the movement of limbs and arms certainly takes most of the pressure off the mind and body altogether.
This is aside from the numerous advantages including but not limited to burning extra calories, feeling happier, feeling energetic, and above all the tendency to move about at a faster pace than those who lead a sedentary life style.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

Prevention Is Better Than Cure
 by: Shahana Yasmin

How many of us have heard that statement yet do nothing to make it real. We wait to be told that we have some kind of illness or disease before we start looking after ourselves, I'm sure you would agree that this method of realisation can often come too late (especially for those who are only given narrow options of treatment through conventional medicine).
We live in a society full of information channels yet we just have to open our eyes and take action. It's all good reading the information but if we fail to apply the knowledge what use is it?
Did you know that there are known carcinogens (cancer causing agents) in a lot of personal care products, shampoo's, toothpastes, moisturisers, I was shocked to find this out! With so many toxins in our bodies, and through our eating habits (fruit and veg sprayed with chemicals & pesticides), it's no surprise we have all sorts of illnesses and diseases affecting our lives.
(If you have a car and you keep feeding it fuel that is unsuitable for it's kind, it may get you from A to B a few times but eventually it will clonk out).
We are a society that is so well fed yet the food we eat is so nutritionally depleted. We could sit back and blame and talk about how bad the situation is (and do nothing more) or we can become the change we'd like to see in the world and in our future.
It is said that 1 in 2 people will have developed Cancer at some stage in their lives by 2020.
I choose to be in the percentage without Cancer. I have been fortunate enough to have been touched by beautiful/passionate people who have shared their knowledge with me and enriched my life with food for thought.
You have a choice too........
I would love to hear from those of you who would like to make that transition to good health, disease prevention and personal fulfilments.
Live life with Passion

My Amazing Mom

My Amazing Mom
 by: Susan Graham

My Amazing Mother – "The Arthritis Lady"
From the age of 11 to age 53 my mother avoided holding hands; they were painful to the touch, so puffed up, sore and hot!!!
Raising four children she, of course, had to hold our hands. She tried so hard not to let us know how painful it was but, we knew she was in constant pain.
I always felt bad for my Mom and Dad because holding hands was something they missed. It was hard for her to knit or crochet, which she loved to do.
Walking, bending or standing for any period of time was so painful for her. We learned as small children, my brothers and I, to do what ever we could to help around the house.
She went to over thirteen "Arthritis" specialists, which were of little or no help.
She was prescribed many different drugs and went through all kinds of treatments for her arthritis.
She was in so much pain that she tried anything and everything to find relief.
She was so desperate to find something that would stop her pain that she: Went to over 13 physicians, ("Arthritis Specialists") She took Codeine, Darvon, Sprays and "Gold Treatments" She was placed in traction with a large weight to stretch her body, was tied to the bed and couldn't move for a week! She was put in an upper body cast for 3 months She wore shoe lifts And so much more!!!
In 1980, the last year she suffered from Arthritis, my Mom spent an average of $40.00 month on miscellaneous drugs, $30.00 for a monthly doctor appointment and $30.00 on pain killers. That's a total of $100.00 a month. I wish she could have spent that money on something she liked to do instead.
All the drugs, all the doctors, all the treatments, all the money... ALL the FAILURES!!!
Doctor after doctor told her that there was no cure for arthritis and that she should, "Take this medication, go home and learn to live with it". One doctor predicted that she would be in a wheel chair within 5 years.
We were crushed… My Mom, being the eternal optimist, never gave up… She went on a crusade to find a way to stop her arthritis. And she did!!!
She spent many years researching arthritis, and put together this incredible program, "I Cured My Arthritis You Can Too", that shows you in easy to follow steps how you can do what she did at home, and without drugs.
I know this may sound too good to be true. But she did it... My Mom has gone through what you are going through right now. She has now been living Pain Free from Arthritis for 25 years.
My Mom, Margie Garrison, is known on the World Wide Web (and elsewhere) as "The Arthritis Lady" and is now doing something she "likes" to do. She spends most of her time answering thousands of emails and phone calls from people who suffer with arthritis. She answers questions and helps solve problems.
And I am not the only one singing her praises; here are just a few things other people have said…
"My wife has rheumatoid arthritis and she tried what you wrote in your book and she has been almost totally pain free for a month so far. Thanks for publishing your book.
Roy - Goose Creek, S.C
**********
"I have purchased your book and it is a miracle from God. I really believe in it. It has opened my eyes toward the right foods we should eat to keep our bodies healthy and free from diseases.
Evangeline – Culloden, GA
**********
"Thank the Lord and you. Your book is my companion in my quest for health.
I can't praise it enough. You are a pioneer in the practice of prevention in Medicine.

Testosterone Therapy In XXI Century

Testosterone Therapy In XXI Century
 by: Eugene Shtalman

Nowadays many people are familiar with the appellation of "low testosterone level". What does it mean? It mean that male body produce less amounts of this hormone than necessary.
Testosterone is the major androgenic hormone produced by the cells of the testes. This hormon regulates gonadotropic secretion and wolffian duct differentiation and stimulates skeletal muscle.
There are two different effects of testosterone:
Anabolic effects: promoting growth, muscle building.
Androgenic effects: developing the primary (male sex organs) and secondary sex characteristics (deepening of the voice and growth of facial hair for example).
Testosterone level in the body is analysing thrugh the serum total testosterone test.
This test measures the total of two forms of testosterone – free and bound. Normal test levels of combined bound and free testosterone range anywhere from 300-1100 ng/dl (nanograms per deciliter) depending on age and individual factors. Concentration of testosterone much less than 300-1100 ng/dl is to be considered as low testosterone level.
Low testosterone level is one of the reasons of male cryptorchidism, hypogonadism and the symptoms of the male climacteric.
The quick and effective way to increase level of this hormone in the body is to administer synthetic testosterone.
There are few forms of synthetic testosterone:
Injectable forms:
Testosterone Suspension - is an preparation containing free testosterone in a water.
Testosterone Enanthate, Cypionate and Propionate – esters of testosterone.
Such forms of testosterone are injected in buttocks every one-two weeks.
The big disadvantage is that testosterone injections are quite painfull.
Oral forms:
Testosterone undecanoate - it is considered a safer oral form of testosterone.
One disadvantage of orally administered undecanoate is that it is eliminated from the body very quickly. Thus, frequent administration is necessary.
Transdermal forms (also known as patches):
In this case testosterone deliver through the skin, by the use of a hormone containing patch, gel, or cream. Patch is applied daily to a man's shaved scrotum, the newer patch forms can be applied to the upper arms, back, thighs, or abdomen.

Natural Earth Extracts Detox You Easily - While You Sleep

Natural Earth Extracts Detox You Easily - While You Sleep
 by: Kaye Bewley

Undeniably the people surrounding my life have, at one time or another, had their finger on the pulse of humanity's future. Oddly enough for a nutritionist, over the past 20 years I have been keen to expand my knowledge of the renewable energy field while also being in a position to learn from physicians, doctors and psychologists too. In fact, being able to witness scientists experimenting in natural energy as well as natural nutrition has provided a tremendous opportunity for me to merge this knowledge and arrive at this conclusion: we appear to be creating our own dis-eases through our inability to trust the natural resources our planet offers on a plate.
Over time, as my understanding of this became clearer, aspects of the alternative - rather than conventional - health arena took my attention away from the planet to focus on healing the body. During this path of discovery one prevalent argument, upheld by millions but practiced by few, has continuously come to the fore - that nothing can be taken for granted. That this view and attitude is not generally upheld by society with regard to health issues is distressing. Frequently it tends to be sidelined as a secondary subject, even to the extent of embarrassment, even though everyone I have come into contact with has experienced one or more of the following problems: a pain in the neck, aching joints, a constantly blocked nose, an allergy of some kind, digestive failure, lack of concentration, fatigue and bowel disorders. That's without mentioning ailments arising from psychological damage, such as the ever-increasing statistics of depression and anxiety prevalent in a modern society.
Putting this knowledge aside for a moment, many are aware that our bones, muscles, joints, blood and the sticky membranes that keep it all together, need nutrients and minerals to sustain their very being. And we all know that our planet requires particular atmospheric conditions to keep it in perpetual balance. While examining these facts, it became clear to me that our earth and our bodies have at their core, one common denominator: the energy they need to produce to keep it in tip top condition. Strange then, that it is only when that fragile energy producer fails (i.e. poisons in our food and drink or toxins in our atmosphere), that urgent attention is sought to ease the situation.
Generally, people are more aware now than say, fifty years ago, of what can be done by the individual to prevent 'rather than fix' a problem occurring. Eliminating toxins has become the prime subject on most people's lips. Toxins are inevitably invited into our bodies and can systematically pulverise the most perfect of all creations. These odd sounding substances have received a huge amount of press in recent months, but does anyone truly know what they are, where they originate or how they get into our bodies? Spare yourself a few minutes by answering the following questions. From them you may be able discover if your body is suffering from a toxic overload
Are you tired for no apparent reason?
Are you more immobile than you used to be?
Are you irritable without good reason?
Are you unexcited about special occasions?
Is tea, coffee and sugar a constant in your diet?
Does your life feel pointless?
Does your head feel light or dizzy on occasions?
Does the thought of learning new things trouble you?
Do you express anxiety over the smallest of events?
Do you have a new sofa/chair?
Do you have your clothes dry cleaned regularly?
Do you use a spray air-freshener?
Do you swim in a pool with strong chlorine?
Do you use your mobile telephone often?
Do you have central heating?
Do you drink alcohol regularly?
Do you smoke?
Do you eat mostly convenience or packaged foods?
Do you have mostly white bread or buns in your larder?
Do you lounge around instead of going out for a brisk walk occasionally?
Do you live near a farmer‚s field that is sprayed with pesticides?
Do you use fertilisers on your garden?
Do you use bleach, detergent, household cleaners and disinfectants?
Do you live near an overhead power cable?
Do you cook with the microwave?
Do you work on a computer most days?
Do you use florescent light at any time during the day?
Do you drink tap water?
All of these situations invite unnatural substances into your body - which inevitably lead you to experience toxic overload. From the list of questions, if you answered only eight with a yes‚ inevitably your body will be suffering.
Remember those scientist guys I worked with? At one time or another they all observed a consistent pattern emerging when the body is bombarded by food, energy or chemicals that are not natural. I repeat; saying yes‚ to only eight of the questions above means your body will become clogged up and will find the ability to fight off any ailments, greatly reduced. Added to all these alien substances, you must admit we have gotten into a relatively fast pace of life - compared to, say, in 1905.
So, how do you get out of this toxic cycle? How can you eliminate harmful substances from your blood? In effect, what can you do to de-tox? Well, Carole Vordaman is a good advocate for detoxing substances with her special diet plan while another good option is in undertaking 'The Good Life'! People residing in the UK (and those who have access to satellite TV), will probably be aware of the old 70‚s comedy where two affable folk give up their hectic lives to free them from the 'rat race' and grow their own. What this generally means is going right back to the natural basics. Not literally tilling the earth with the Oxen and plough, on the contrary! You don't have to grow your own to get the good stuff inside you. However, by making a positive decision in this area you will need to be meticulously aware of the products you're putting in your shopping basket. For instance, in order to help your body de-tox itself, you need to go for natural every time. That even means buying locally grown foods, rather than packaged items that are from far flung places you've never heard of and also eating your fruit and veg in season. You need to train yourself to eat as many raw, rather than cooked, veggies as you can get inside you - after all cavemen didn't have cookers and we still don't know how long they lived (hang on, I'll get an Anthropologist/scientist friend of mine onto it right away!). You'll need to drink fresh, natural juices and eliminate the sweetened or condensed kind that line the supermarket shelves in their hundreds. And I really need to say this: go organic. Even drinking bottled water will be preferable to taking the tap. Tap water has an immense list of additives put into it in order to purify and clean it, as it needs to make its way through an endless maze of lead, plastic and copper pipes hundreds of feet below us, not to mention the fact that it's been recycled several times! Incidentally, I've read that the Thames water in London goes through at least seven people before it gets to you - please do correct me if you know I'm wrong!
But doesn't this all this seem like a lot of trouble to go through? Aren't you creating more stress for yourself while wondering what's good and what's bad? None of us wants to give up our central heating, fluorescent lighting nor a comfy new sofa - we shouldn't have to if they make our stressful lives a little less so. However, as with all good things in this modern world of ours, there is another way. It's a way that couldn't be simpler if you tried to hunt it down in caveman-like fashion yourself.
You can de-tox your body by investing in some Eastern complementary therapy pads that you simply stick on your feet. At night, while you sleep, they do all the hard work by drawing out the harmful substances. By the way, those marvellous reflexologists have known for years that different parts of the feet relate to different organs in the body. With the pads on your feet you'll be sucking out the toxins from those specific organs without you even having to try - and you'll even get a refreshing reflexology treatment at the same time! This wonderful little product created by two Japanese scientists (who, by the way, I haven't met yet), contains a neat little bag mixed full of natural extracts derived from our dear old mother earth, namely; Bamboo and Wood Vinegar, Ground Crystal Tourmaline, Agaricus Mushroom to mention a few. Marvellous creation when you think about it. As are our bodies!
So, this is by far an easier way to help your body cope - and with these pads you can prepare it for battle against the onslaught of chemicals and fungicides that are continuously being flung at it through the atmosphere you're breathing every day - not to mention the food you're eating. All while you're indulging in a peaceful dreamland and that's another beneficial side-effect as they do tend to offer a restful night's sleep as well.
I hasten to add; according to those scientists guys (researchers in alternative energy and healing), these pads make a tremendous difference in eliminating those aches and pains, stiffness, soreness and general lethargy. I know, I've been fortunate enough to try them myself and, as a result, I've boosted my own metabolism through using them.
Knowing this, together with all the information I've gathered from both areas of energy production, I've learned that the science of body and earth research has well and truly merged! Besides, while individuals are merely offering themselves as another daunting statistic on the NHS waiting list, what is there to lose by trying them? You can check them out for yourself at BESTherapies3.com under the link: Detox with E-Tox!

What Is A Holistic Practitioner?

What Is A Holistic Practitioner?
 by: Jennifer Shapiro

Holistic Practitioners are holistic healing professionals with a gift in one or more areas of healing. From bodyworkers to homeopaths to hypnotherapists, the term holistic practitioner has become one that is often challenging to describe or understand. Hopefully this article will provide you with some clarity on what a holistic practitioner is and how to find one that meets your individual needs.
Saying holistic practitioner is similar to saying doctor. While there are general practitioners that cross along many paths, most specialize in one or more holistic methods or areas. The main areas of specialization are body-centered therapists, energy-centered therapists, mind-centered therapists, soul and spirit-centered therapists, emotional release therapists, and coaches/counselors. All of these therapists strive to bring a greater quality of life to their clients. That may occur through inner balance, self-empowerment, physical ease, or even emotional confidence.
One thing to realize is that many holistic practitioners work in many areas. In fact, it is usually challenging to limit a practitioner to one area. For example, a hypnotherapist may also be a chakra therapist, a bodyworker could also be a spiritual counselor, etc. Also, since the mind-body-soul connection is just that, connected, wherever you begin, be it in energy work, bodywork, or even the mind, you will find that all of you is affected by the work.
Use this article as a guide to explore the realms of possibilities, rather than limiting your choices to an area.
Body-centered Therapists
Samples of body-centered therapists are bodyworkers, massage therapists, pilates and yoga therapists, rolfing professionals(often termed rolfers), acupressure therapists, myofascial release and sports massage therapists, reflexologists, thai massage therapists, watsu practitioners, feldenkrais and alexander method professionals, and movement therapists (this list is provided to offer an overview as there are at least 50 types of body-centered therapists).
While each body-centered therapist has their own way of working with clients, many use a combination of movement, the breath, and physical pressure (from massage to trigger points) to allow the body to release tension. This release of tension then allows the mind to also find a relaxing state. Sometimes the relaxation state is the goal of the sessions, other times, it is the true starting point.
Energy-centered Therapists
Samples of energy-centered therapists are integrative energy workers, reiki practitioners, healing touch practitioners, breathwork therapists, jin shin do and jin shin jytsu therapists, matrix therapists, applied kinesiologists, orgone therapists, polarity workers, cranial sacral workers, qigong and tai chi masters. Acupuncturists and homeopathy practitioners could also be deemed energy workers.
Energy workers often work with energetic 'maps' of the body. They look at where the energy is stuck, depleted or overtaxed in the body and work with the individual to bring a level of balance to the body's energetic system. This balance also affects the mind and the overall body, enhancing ones state of being on many levels.
Mind-centered Therapists
Samples of mind-centered therapists are hypnotherapists, neuro-linguistic programming practitioners (NLP), integrative release therapists(IRT), regression therapists and metaphysicians.
Mind-centered therapists look at the structures of one's belief systems and how they may be conflicting with and/or not supporting a client's quality of life. Mind-centered therapists often find the original cause of what the stuck states are and work with the unconscious mind to reframe limiting patterns and beliefs which provide greater resources and confidence for the client to live the life they desire.
Soul and Spirit-centered Therapists
Samples of soul and spirit-centered therapists are shamans, angelic masters, psychic mediums, intuitive guides and spiritual counselors(who would also fall into the coaching/counseling category).
Soul and spirit-centered therapists work with clients in a variety of ways. A shaman may work with a client using soul retrieval to regain a part of their soul that has been 'lost' due to trauma. A psychic may offer an individual information on what will happen on their current path if they don't make changes. An intuitive may assist a client in talking with a deceased loved one. As with the other categories, there are many ways soul and spirit-centered therapists work with their clients.
Emotional Release Therapists
Samples of emotional release therapists are integrative release therapists, somato-emotional therapists, psych-k therapists and amanae therapists.
Emotional release therapists work with patterns of emotions that are stuck in the body/mind and assist a client in moving through these blocks into greater joy and emotional freedom. Many other therapies, including neuro-linguistic programming, yoga, shamanic work and energy work employ emotional release methodologies.
Holistic Coaches and Counselors
Samples of coaches and counselors are life coaches, empowerment coaches, spiritual and intuitive counselors, holistic psychologists, and nutritional counselors.
Coaches and counselors assist clients in designing and manifesting the life, career, business and health situations that they truly desire. A holistic coach or counselor often works with a client 1-4x per month setting goals, opening belief systems and partnering with the client to provide the support they need to move forward in their lives.
As you can see, the term holistic practitioner can be used to mean a holistic profession trained in any number of areas. Usually, a holistic practitioner will list their areas of expertise in any of their advertising to assist you in determining if they would be a fit for your unique situation.
For information on locating a holistic practitioner, please see my article on 'Choosing a Holistic Practitioner' or see Holistic Hometown (www.HolisticHometown.com) for holistic resources in your hometown, and beyond.
Blessings on your journey.

Developing Routines, Creating Rituals

Developing Routines, Creating Rituals
 by: Beth Yim

Routines and rituals are important for the well-being and health of every member of a family, especially in light of the high demands placed on both parents. According to a compilation of 50 years of research on families, routines are a method of organizing family life, sharing burdens and reducing stress. The review of the research in the American Psychological Association's (APA) Journal of Family Psychology, found that families with strong routines correlated with marital satisfaction, adolescents' sense of personal identity, children's health, academic achievement and stronger family relationships.
Psychologist Barbara H. Fiese, Ph.D., states that "Routines involve instrumental communication conveying information that 'this is what needs to be done' and involve a momentary time commitment so that once the act is completed, there is little, if any, afterthought."
The key here is the "little, if any, afterthought!" I love to cook, and preparing my family a meal every evening is not difficult. However, not everyone enjoys food preparation or putting the energy into thinking about preparing food. To change cooking from drudgery to an exciting experience routines that require as little thinking energy as possible are needed.
Creating Rituals
Ensuring everyone sits down together for at least five dinners a night is a routine that can provide incredible benefits. Kids can share the events of their day, discussions on current issues can expand everyone's thoughts and the enjoyment of sharing good food together can create harmony and balance. Once a routine becomes a consistent event it has the potential to develop into a ritual and according to Fiesse, "Rituals, … involve symbolic communication and convey 'this is who we are' as a group and provide continuity in meaning across generations. Also, there is often an emotional imprint where once the act is completed, the individual may replay it in memory to recapture some of the positive experience."
Once dinnertime becomes an enjoyable routine the ritual of eating together changes from a chore to an enjoyable experience for everyone, including the cook.
My family has several strategies for encouraging a routine and ritual around dinnertime. Our favourite is the long standing rummy or hearts game. Whenever we eat dinner together we play at least 8 hands, keeping score and adding it to the previous nights wins. We are hoping to go for a Guinness Book of World Records, longest continual game of rummy or hearts! Other activities for enhancing everyone's enjoyment of dinnertime are as follows:
For younger children:
Get the younger children involved in the meal by having them decorate napkin rings. Use empty toilet paper rolls, cut in half and have your child colour or paint them. If they are old enough have them write the individuals names on them.
Right after dinner, before homework or chores, have an older sibling or adult read a short story. It's great motivation for your child to finish dinner!
Have every family member bring a joke to share during dinner.
For older children and teens:
Have each child share a new word. Initially, everyone has to guess at its meaning and this can be quite humourous. The child then shares the definition and everyone uses it in a sentence.
Create your own "Jeopardy!" game. Everyone comes to the table with a answer and people guess the question. For example; "This city is the name of a queen and a city." The answer would be; "What is Victoria?" Games like Brain Quest have questions already prepared if you find it challenging coming up with answers and just want to ask straight questions.
Have a crazy dinner night once a month. Invite grandparents or family friends. Everyone dresses up and dinner is all mixed up. Dessert first, purple pasta, flowers sprinkled on the spaghetti sauce, etc.
On a more academic note have each child or adult bring a current issue to dinner and open a discussion about it. Ask questions and encourage creative thinking.
Play games during dinner. We set a 'Lazy Susan' in the center of the table and twirl it so each person can see the game board properly. Examples of games that stimulate thinking try, Scrabble, Oxford Dilemna, Tribond, Cribbage, Quiddler or Trivial Pursuit.
Creating routines around dinnertime, routines that become rituals, is a way of keeping the family connected. It creates harmony, and balance and encourages openness among family members. With harmony comes a willingness and enjoyment of the whole process of creating healthy meals and the role of cook becomes a significant and integral part of the rituals at dinnertime. The Deal With Feminine Hygiene

The Deal With Feminine Hygiene
 by: Oneil Wilson

With puberty, comes great responsibility.
What with all the changes – including the way your body looks and the way it smells – happening during this exciting phase in your life! There's nothing to worry about. These changes are a normal part of becoming a woman, but sometimes, they can be a real source of anxiety for girls. You may wonder what you can do to feel as clean as possible during your period.
Well, wonder no more. Here we have the low-down on the feminine products you can use during your period:
Pads
Once you begin menstruating, you'll need to use something to soak up the menstrual blood – either a pad or tampon. Pads, also called sanitary pads or sanitary napkins, are made of layers of cotton. Pads come in various thicknesses for heavier or lighter menstrual periods or for day or nighttime use. Some pads have extra cotton on the sides (called "wings") that fold over the edges of your underwear to. Some come with a deodorant or deodorizing substance in them. All pads have a sticky strip on the bottom that helps them adhere to your underwear.
It is best to change pads every 3 or 4 hours, or more often when your period is heavy. This helps prevent the buildup of vaginal bacteria and eliminates odor.
Tampons
Another choice for feminine protection during your menstrual period is the tampon. A tampon is also made of cotton, but it's compressed into a tiny tubular shape. Unlike a pad, which catches menstrual blood after it leaves the body, tampons absorb blood from inside the vagina. Like pads, tampons come in different sizes for heavier and lighter periods, and they can also come in deodorizing scents. Tampons are also available with or without applicators - they can either be inserted into the vagina using a special cardboard or plastic tube-like applicator or with just your fingers.
Like a pad, a tampon needs to be changed every 3 or 4 hours or when it's saturated with blood.
It's very important that you change them every few hours and that you wear the absorbency type that is right for your period. Leaving a tampon in for too long increases the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS is caused by a toxin made by Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria which may occur from certain super absorbent tampons, especially if they are left in longer than is recommended. It can enter the body from inside of your vagina, then invade the bloodstream, releasing toxins that may cause shock and multiple organ dysfunctions.
Panty liners, also called panty shields, are similar to pads but are shorter and thinner. Panty liners are worn on very light days, or as added protection in combination with a tampon.
Cups
Another feminine hygiene option is the cup. It is a soft, little disposable cup you wear inside, out of the way, to hold rather than absorb your monthly flow. It fits over your cervix and softens at body temperature, so that when inserted it conforms to your anatomy to create a personal, comfortable fit and help prevent leakage. You can wear it for about 12 hours (or until it is full), and then empty it out, rinse it, and use it again.
It's really up you which sanitary product you feel most comfortable using. With these products, you can still enjoy doing the things you love even when you have your period.

Flying Killers

Flying Killers
 by: Kendall Fortune

They are not just a nuisance – they can spread serious diseases. They visit the most disgusting places. In the countryside they will seek out animal excrement. In urban areas they love to visit trashcans. Whatever they find will be spread amongst us and could end up in our food if we let them into our kitchens and food stores. They are, of course one of the greatest disease spreaders we have known – houseflies – or Musca domestica.
With modern methods of food production, where an ingredient from one food factory can find its way into thousands of food products distributed far and wide – it only takes one weak link in the chain for thousands to be infected with diseases carried by houseflies.
These days, especially in industrialized economies, we have less and less control over our food. The production processes, the ingredients and, of course, the hygiene standards that surround them are in the hands of others.
There are fly killer machines out there, some cheap and nasty that simply are not up to the job and the more robust machines such as those made by Insect-o-Cutor (buy at www.eeeee.co.uk). Health inspectors are becoming increasingly aware of some of these cheaper alternatives. They realize that there are some skinflint companies out there that will buy the cheapest fly killer machine they can find, hoping that the health inspector will tick the appropriate box. What they are missing is this: protecting the public is not about complying with standards; it's actually about protecting the public! In any case, if the fly killer machine is not fit for purpose then they are probably breaking the law and will not meet even their lowest of standards.
Good production managers, quality assurance staff etc will not skimp on public health. As for the bad ones: just wait for your next visit by an environmental health officer.

Just What Is Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil?

Just What Is Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil?
 by: Dave Woynarowski, M.D.

The answer to that question would depend on who you ask.
If you asked the typical manufacturer of vitamin supplements, using standard food grade material, the answer would be "There is no such thing as pharmaceutical grade fish oil". If you asked a practicing physician like me, I would tell you, "Pharmaceutical grade fish all is the only type of fish oil I would ever put into my body". So just what does the term "pharmaceutical grade" mean?
First, it's important for you to understand that the FDA does not, at this moment, regulate vitamin supplements; therefore, any manufactured vitamin supplement is not evaluated by the FDA, so it's not really a pharmaceutical.
Prescription drugs require very stringent purity and ingredient testing before they are considered safe by the regulatory bodies. In this country, technically speaking, food supplements do not require that high a degree of stringent purity testing.
However, a small band of manufacturers like me have dedicated ourselves to producing only the finest quality nutritional supplements. We therefore, use the term "pharmaceutical grade" to describe our products.
Simply put, what this means is, if the FDA were to make fish oil a prescription drug tomorrow, our product would pass muster. This is because we have stringent purity testing and allow no detectable levels of pollutants in our fish oil or any other of our products, for that matter.
This is a time-consuming and often expensive process, but yields the absolute best product money can buy. For the past couple of years, the debate has raged over pharmaceutical grade terminology. Many companies that do not apply the stringent high-grade procedures to guarantee the quality of their products are literally furious at the term "pharmaceutical grade". They would like to see it banished from use because it puts them at a serious disadvantage. It earmarks their product, especially fish oil, as substandard.
Lets take a look at a recent Consumer Reports article on the purity of fish oil. Several different brands of fish oil were tested in this particular study. The conclusion reached was that all fish oils have about the same amount of pollutant levels, 1 ppm of lead, for example. Therefore the consumer should go out and buy the cheapest brand of fish oil possible since there would be no difference between them other than price.
Well my friend, the devil is in the details. Let's take our product Dr. Dave's Best Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil as an example. Recent independent laboratory testing yielded no mercury, and no lead at any detectable level. What this translates into is a purity of parts per trillion rather than parts per million. Those three zeros make a big difference. This could be the difference between you ingesting mercury at detectable levels in as little as one year's time, versus ingesting no mercury over a lifetime.
Why is this important?
Mercury is the most toxic metal that naturally occurs on planet Earth. It would take only a very small amount of mercury in a water supply to make it undrinkable by the Environmental Protection Agency standards. Mercury can cause brain damage that looks very much like Alzheimer's dementia. You may have heard the term "mad as a hatter" from reading Alice in Wonderland, or simply as a clichй. Many years ago, hat makers used dyes that contained mercury, so they often suffered from severe brain damage as a result. As our population continues to age and brain health becomes a critical issue not just from Alzheimer's disease, but from other forms of dementia, it should become apparent that we should all strive to keeps our brains as healthy and toxin free as possible. This is one way in which my pharmaceutical grade fish oil stands out.
Now let's take a look at lead. Most people know that lead exposure is toxic. In a particular area where I grew up there were battery plants. In these battery plants constant lead testing of the employees was undertaken to prevent permanent damage. Lead toxicity can have many serious consequences, including nerve problems, mental problems, blood problems, and kidney failure.
Sadly, lead and mercury are not the only pollutants found in our water supplies and our fish. Byproducts of the petroleum industry, including polyvinyl chlorides and biphenyl compounds are also found throughout the world. Some manufactures of fish oil note that all their fish sources come from above the Arctic Circle. This is the case with our fish oil also; however, we still subject it to very stringent purification methods using a proprietary process called molecular distillation. We do this because we recognize that even fish caught above the Arctic Circle are exposed to pollution. Therefore, where you catch your fish really doesn't matter all that much. What matters the most is what you do with your fish oil after you get it. Please do not be misled by anyone claiming that they have found a pure source of fish that requires no processing.
Some of the physical health problems associated with these types of petroleum pollutants include breathing problems, kidney failure, weakness and fatigue.
Taken as a whole, it is very important, that whatever you put into your body maintains the highest purity standards you can get, because you don't want to load up any of your organ systems, especially your brain and your heart with toxic pollutants.
There is yet another pollutant and a problem, which as far as I know, we are the only manufacturer who addresses. This is the problem of radiation.
Again, depending on where you catch your fish, you will see high levels of pollutants, among them radiation. For example, Pacific caught salmon have a higher underlying level of pollutants, including radiation.
You may have heard the term, Pacific Rim of Fire. The Pacific Rim of Fire stretches from the coast of California, up to Alaska, all the way down through Japan, and some of the islands of the Far East. This term basically refers to volcanic activity in the area where the bowels of the earth churn. They release extra radiation. Sadly, radiation pollution is a problem in this area of the world. No one is sure why there is extra metallic pollutants in Pacific salmon. It is simply a fact of life. At this time therefore, we use only Atlantic caught salmon, herring and other such oily fish from above the Arctic Circle.
It is amazing that some of this pollution can actually come from sunken Soviet nuclear submarines. This is in addition to background radiation. The chemical that is tested for in radiation testing is cesium. We maintain an extremely low level of background radiation in all of our products. Again, as far as I know, no one else even bothers to test for.
Is this stringent testing, that makes our product superior to all the rest on the market. Now let's look at some human examples. Let's say you wanted your mother or father to experience the benefits of my pharmaceutical grade fish oil. You could rest assured that you would not be in any way, causing harm to the fragile brain of an elderly person. Studies have shown that fish oil may indeed improve memory behavior and performance in the demented patient. Now let's look at the opposite end of the spectrum, a pregnant mother or newborn baby. There are many studies that show improved hand eye coordination and increased fetal development before birth. Fewer diseases of childhood and adult especially allergic diseases and in some cases, even a higher IQ in children who are adequately supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. For the teenager, there may be some serious benefits to acne, attention deficit disorder and concentration levels from taking fish oil as well. In each case, we cannot use the term treatment, because the FDA will not allow it, however in my own clinical practice, this is exactly the term I use. I do essentially use fish oil as a medicine. Therefore, I insist on only the highest quality for my products. Once again, if you were to take this and make it a prescription drug tomorrow, it would pass all the stringent testing the FDA would subject to. For this reason, we proudly use the term pharmaceutical grade fish oil.
There is another thing you should know about Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil. Because of its absolute purity, the most common side effect, "Fish Burp" is a rare occurrence indeed.
Dr. Dave's Best Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil, physician used, physician tested, my best to you and your family.

New Hope for Alzheimer.s Treatment

New Hope for Alzheimer's Treatment
 by: Boris Predovich

There is now widespread agreement among research scientists and medical professionals that Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a problem quickly growing to vast proportions. As the life expectancy of Americans continues to rise, increasing the percentage of the population over 65 years of age, so does the number of Alzheimer's cases.
It is currently estimated that people over 65 years of age have a 10% chance of developing Alzheimer's, while those over 85 have a 50% likelihood of developing AD, making it the leading cause of dementia among older people. Though the disease is associated primarily with memory loss, its effects also comprise a number of other severe disabilities, including changes in personality, disorientation, difficulty with speech and comprehension, and a lack of ability to move normally.
Consequently, most Alzheimer's patients require a great deal of care, costing society close to $100 billion annually. According to Christian Fritze, Ph.D., Director of the Antibody Products Division at Covance Research Products, "The impact of Alzheimer's Disease on our society will only increase as our population ages. The prevalence of the disease and disabling effects on the patient are significant by themselves. In addition we are becoming increasingly aware of the far-reaching effects on families, care-giver networks and the economics of our health care system. The drive for progress towards effective treatments by the research and drug development community is growing stronger every day."
A New Consensus
But recent developments in the medical research community do provide some hope. During the last two years, there has been a growing consensus among Alzheimer researchers about the cause of Alzheimer's disease, providing focus for scientists exploring the new treatment options.
The focus is on amyloid beta oligomers, a new wrinkle on an older hypothesis called the "amyloid cascade hypothesis". Widespread acceptance of this new conclusion is something of a milestone in the history of Alzheimer's research. As Dr. Fritze says, "The decades old quest for the causative agent in Alzheimer's Disease has recently focused on the precursors of amyloid plaques. These precursors are part of a bewildering array of processed (APP) Amyloid Precursor Protein) variants, Tau isoforms and secretase components that play a role in neuronal cytotoxicity and subsequent brain dysfunction."
Amyloid plaques are sticky protein deposits in the brain containing amyloid beta peptide. Researchers have associated the buildup of this plaque with Alzheimer's disease since its discovery in 1907. But despite the clear correlation, scientists were not sure what, exactly, spurred the onset of Alzheimer's Disease.
The hypothesis that amyloid beta accumulation in the brain is the major cause of Alzheimer's Disease1 has been the focus of much attention over the past decade. Although this hypothesis was the leading explanation for the cause of AD, it had several weaknesses. The most obvious problem with the theory was the fact that the buildup of amyloid beta peptides did not necessarily correspond with the severity of Alzheimer's symptoms.
However, in 19982 and in 20023, researchers proposed that it was not the amyloid beta plaques themselves that were neurotoxic – and therefore the cause of Alzheimer's – but rather precursors to amyloid beta plaques formed by smaller aggregates of amyloid beta. These new ideas are gaining widespread acceptance among the Alzheimer's research community, creating a consensus that had not existed before.
This new focus provides one more spur to action for Alzheimer's researchers, and underscores the need for further advancement. "The AD field demands sophisticated, highly-sensitive research tools to track these components and quantitate the existence of monomeric, oligomeric and fibrillar amyloid forms present in the progression of Alzheimer's disease," says Dr. Fritze.
Antibody Treatment
Two new studies, both released in October 20044, suggest that new treatment options may be on the horizon. The studies are the modification of one of two previous attempts using amyloid beta (Aβ) antibodies in the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. The previous attempts, though not successful, did at least suggest new courses of action in Alzheimer's research and provided invaluable information for researchers.
In the first of the two previous attempts, researchers injected the antigen itself – pieces of the beta amyloid protein that makes up amyloid plaque – into mice, in the hopes that the injections would generate an immune (antibody) response against amyloid. Results were initially positive. The injected antigen produced Aβ antibodies and slowed the onset of the disease by decreasing Aβ levels. However, when tried on humans, the procedure led to meningoencephalitis (an inflammation of tissue around the brain) in some patients, and was therefore halted.
In the second attempt, a passive immunity therapy was tried in which antibodies to amyloid beta (not amyloid protein) were injected into mice, but hemorrhaging and inflammation ensued due to the high antibody doses required to be effective.
New Hope
But now there appears to be new hope for the use of antibodies as therapeutic agents for the treatment of Alzheimer's patients. In the first of the two new studies that appeared in October conducted by the National Institute for Longevity Sciences, NCGG, and the Center for Neurological Diseases, Brigham & Women's College, Harvard Institute of Medicine, researchers modified the first procedure. Concluding that the meningoenchaphalitis which occurred in some patients was caused by autoimmune T-cell activation, the researchers hoped to develop a vaccine that could minimize this T-cell activation while retaining the production of AЯ antibodies. To accomplish this they created an oral vaccine that attached AЯ DNA to an adeno-associated virus vector, which served to mitigate T-cell activation. Thus they were able to decrease AЯ levels in the brains of the mice and yet not activate T-cells to the degree they had before, greatly reducing the risk of meningoencephalitis.
In the other new study, conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago, researchers succeeded in making the passive immunity protocol much safer. This they accomplished by changing the point of entry for the AЯ antibodies. Rather than injecting the antibodies into the body of the mice, as was done previously, antibody was injected directly into the brain of the mice. Because the antibodies were injected directly into the brain, smaller doses were needed, and side effects were minimized.
The results of the above studies, and the potential for further optimized immunization strategies may prove to be watershed events in the history of Alzheimer's treatment.

Just How Dangerous Is OxyContin, Anyway?

Just How Dangerous Is OxyContin, Anyway?
 by: Albert Frantz

OxyContin belongs to a family of drugs called opioids, which are derived from the opium poppy and are among the most common drugs used to address both chronic and acute pain. Due their abuse and addictive potential, they are nearly always prescribed with caution.
Opioids suppress the body's response to pain by acting on what is called the mu receptor, which is a molecule that bonds with the body's natural pain killers. The mu receptor is thus the body's most significant pain gateway. It also bonds with opiate drugs such as heroin and morphine. This receptor affects not only the experience of pain but also of euphoria, which contributes to the addictive potential of these drugs.
Unfortunately, medical textbooks inform us that all opioids have been abused, and there is no way around their high abuse potential.
To control distribution of addictive drugs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency classifies drugs for regulatory purpose into schedules, of which there are five. Schedule 1 drugs, like raw opium and LSD, are as close to completely prohibited as is possible (they're permitted, for instance, in special laboratory research circumstances), while schedule 5 drugs are common over-the-counter medications that pose extremely little risk of addiction or abuse.
Where do opioids fit into the picture? Oh, they're in with their schedule 2 neighbors heroin, cocaine, morphine, amphetamine and the like. All except oxycodone (the active ingredient in OxyContin), which despite an addictive potential comparable to heroin is in the more "harmless" schedule 3!
OxyContin has been popping up in the news quite a lot lately. It's become the drug of choice among new addicts. In fact, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency, between 50 and 90 percent of new patients admitted to drug rehabilitation programs in the states most severely affected by OxyContin abuse (West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Virginia) list OxyContin as their drug of choice.
To be fair, chronic pain sufferers are seeking relief from their pain, rather than a dangerous high, and medication certainly plays a useful role in pain management in many circumstances. Further, OxyContin becomes most addictive when its long-acting time-release safeguard is circumvented, usually by chewing the pill, thus releasing the active drug oxycodone all at once. Patients using the drug legally, for its intended purpose and under their doctor's supervision are clearly at less risk.
Still, the risk is definite and grows over time, as all opioids are known to diminish in effectiveness over time, mandating either higher doses or opioid rotation (temporarily switching to a new opioid) or both. Further, withdrawal symptoms can be experienced when patients stop taking opioids, making them crave more drugs. In fact, many patients report that their sensation of pain is worse after ceasing treatment than it was before they started! (In some cases, such as cancer, this effect could be attributed to the progression of the disease.) Surely it's best never to get started along this vicious cycle.
Let us understand that even dangerously addictive drugs have their legitimate medical uses, one of which may indeed be to relieve chronic pain sufferers of their plight. Still, regardless of whether or not you and your doctor choose drugs as one means of treatment, never forget that pain is a message that you're doing the wrong thing or you're doing things wrong. Listen to your body. Don't shoot the messenger.
