Health And The Economy

Health And The Economy
 by: Dr Randy Wysong

We normally do not think that health is related to economics other than with regard to the costs of medical care. But there is another more fundamental way money impacts our wellbeing. If you could not pay your bills or had to worry about where the next meal would come from, would you be thinking about health, or survival? When we are trying to stay alive moment-to-moment we don't think about food choices, supplements, organic farming, animal welfare or environmental issues. Those considerations are a "luxury" dependent upon economic capability. But they are a luxury we must have if we are to live a reflective life and survive on planet Earth. Without a robust economy, you can pretty much forget about people being environmental, health conscious, or even civil to one another. In starving nations, war is endemic, disease rampant and the environment is only a raw material to be ravaged to hopefully live to the next day.
The emerging world economy will ultimately place great economic stress on the United States. It already has. Thousands of jobs are being lost to overseas companies employing workers requiring a fraction of the wages demanded here. People in America increasingly try to maintain a standard of living through debt. This is great for all the banks popping up on almost every street corner, but bad for the people. Just in the past year there have been almost two million personal bankruptcies declared.
To compete in the marketplace, companies must keep their costs down. If that means shifting manufacturing elsewhere, that's what will be done. India, China and other Eastern rim countries are the beneficiaries of this shift in manufacturing and labor pool. While American workers are clamoring for things to return to the way they were with high wages and generous benefits, workers in developing countries are happy as can be having a job for five dollars a day.
This trend will not go away with "buy American" banners or political rhetoric about treaties, minimum wages and outsourcing. The global economy is here to stay and that will mean the American standard of living will retract and the developing world's will improve. Expect a decline in the standard of living, falling wages and investment insecurity.
Government is not the solution, since it produces nothing but only takes. Government saps an economy, it does not create it. The more that government is hands off, the better the economic vitality. A robust private sector economy (environmentally responsible), on the other hand, is not the enemy as it is so often portrayed, but is critical to financial vitality. Capitalism is not in itself a demon since it merely provides the mechanism for prosperity and with that the opportunity for a society to focus on matters of health and altruism. It works well if ambition and hard work, not merely greed, are its tools.
The inevitable decline of our standard of living is an inevitable and irreversible trend for the foreseeable future. It should concern us not because we want to see American super abundance continue, but because those who are unaware and get caught as casualties in this economic downturn will suffer in so many ways. The world is no longer business as usual.
Good health is not just about diets, supplements, organic foods and aerobics. It's also about being safe, like driving carefully, not standing on the top of a stepladder, wearing safety glasses when chipping stone...and working hard, keeping our financial house in order and supporting societal choices that do the same.
Life is not surety, and neither is our economy. Nevertheless, hard work and prudent management will never be replaced and is as close to security as we can ever get. It, not entitlements and guarantees, is what ultimately creates the financial footing we need for good health and a sustainable, better and more peaceful world.

Is Vitamin E Lethal?

Is Vitamin E Lethal?
 by: Dr Randy Wysong

Recently the news carried the story that a researcher had discovered that taking vitamin E at a level of 400IU or more increases the risk of death. (Jan 2005, Annals of Internal Medicine http://www.annals.org/content/vol142/issue1/) I was immediately suspicious because I have studied the scientific literature on vitamin E for over two decades and have come to the exact opposite conclusion. Hundreds of studies have shown the beneficial effects of vitamin E on numerous modern diseases including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, claudication, arthritis, fibrocystic breast disease, epilepsy, infertility, intelligence…you name it. This evidence comes from carefully controlled clinical trials and meta-nalyses and is published in peer-reviewed publications. So what gives with this new "scoop?" Why did it receive the headlines while all the other studies aren't?
Actually this new information is not new at all. The researcher merely investigated mortality statistics from existing studies and came to a conclusion that people should not take 400IUs of vitamin E (exactly what I have been taking for years and recommending to others) or they may die. In effect he wrote an editorial on other people's work. That is not science.
Although the writer conceded his conclusions may only apply to those who are already seriously ill and not to healthy people, that is the only balance given in the article. He examined 19 different vitamin E studies performed by others including almost 140,000 people. Surely it would seem statistical meaning would emerge out of that. But as science (and life) always goes, the truth is in the details…details too often left out.
For example in one of the 19 studies, large doses of zinc were also given and this can create a copper deficiency which can lead to heart and other diseases. Although a copper supplement was given, it was in the form of cupric oxide, which is poorly absorbed in the gut.
In another of the studies the group being given the vitamin E were much sicker to begin with, including larger numbers of smokers and higher numbers of those with coronary artery disease and high blood pressure. Of course there will be greater mortality in such a group, but it would have nothing to do with the vitamin E they were taking.
Another study was skewed by the fact that participants were also taking a synthetic form of beta-carotene, which has been linked to increased lung cancer and liver damage. You can't give vitamin E and synthetic beta-carotene to a group and blame mortality on vitamin E!
Finally, not one of the studies used the natural form of vitamin E. Vitamin E is a mixture of tocopherols: alpha, beta, gamma and delta. But only alpha- tocopheral was used. Not only that, but the synthetic isomeric form, D, L-alpha tocopherol was used in many of the studies. Natural vitamin E exists in only the D isomeric form. The synthetic L form is not produced in nature and may even interfere with the benefits of the natural D form.
The gamma-tocopherol has many proven life-lengthening and disease preventing benefits but when high levels of alpha-tocopherol are consumed these benefits may be cancelled by a kind of biochemical interference. Therefore, whatever gamma-tocopherol was being consumed in the diet may have been cancelled out by the supplements in the study.
When one is done looking at the details behind the headlines there remains no basis for suggesting that high levels of natural vitamin E are dangerous, but rather, when considering the entire body of scientific evidence, there is significant reason for believing exactly the opposite! So much for headlines.
Perhaps more important than the misleading nature of the story is the reason why it would receive top billing. News organizations seem to be fiendishly rubbing their hands together just waiting for any little tidbit that could debunk the value of supplements or a natural approach to health. (They receive huge advertising dollars from the pharmaceutical and other medical industries.) Of course the medical community is right there ready to pile on as well. They have a vested interest in maintaining the popular mindset that disease is just one of those things that happen, that people are victims of disease, and doctors are needed for repair. The notion that supplements, food, and lifestyle can prevent or cure disease threatens their grip and profitability.
Never mind that modern health care is the greatest threat to life and health, killing more people than any other cause. (Wysong e-Health Letter: June 19, 2002) That's not worthy of news, but scaring people away from supplements based upon a flawed study is. We do not live in a rational world.
Is vitamin E supplementation necessary? No, not if you are eating a varied diet of raw, organic, natural foods, living out of doors, exercising daily and are not subject to any workplace or other environmental pollutants. If that is not how you are living, then 400IU of a natural vitamin E tocopherol mix is a very good idea. It is logical since it replaces what would be present in a natural raw diet and helps offset modern toxins, pollutants and stresses. It is also supported by a mountain of good scientific research.

X-Rays . What You Don't See & Feel Can Hurt You

X-Rays – What You Don't See & Feel Can Hurt You
 by: Dr Randy Wysong

There is little doubt that x-ray technology (x-rays, CT scans, fluoroscopy) in medicine has done much good and is an invaluable diagnostic tool. Although I seriously question its usefulness as a therapeutic tool (e.g. cancer radiation therapy), that will not be the focus of this article.
X-rays are high-energy nuclear emissions that have the ability to pass right through tissue and leave an image on a film, called a radiograph (the film itself is not an "x-ray"). Less emission gets through denser tissue like bone, and more goes through soft tissue to darken the film. This results in the contrast, the picture of our insides, seen on the films – light areas are dense tissues, darker areas are less dense.
That little lesson in radiology aside, it's what the x-ray does as it passes through the body that should be of concern to all. The high-energy x-ray particles can wreak havoc on their journey through tissue. When they hit electrons they confer upon them high levels of unnatural energy. Like a bull in a china shop, these electrons can cause mutations including deletions and translocations of DNA material. The wreckage is often beyond the capability of DNA repair mechanisms. The resulting instability of the chromosome is a precursor to cancer. Cancer is, in effect, the inability of a cell to any longer know its place and behave within its normal constraints. The control mechanism for cell behavior is the genetic material with which x-rays and their misbehaving electron progeny play havoc.
This sounds like free-radical activity, but is different in that it is far more energetic and potentially damaging. The body has mechanisms in place to scavenge and quench free radicals, but x-ray energy is several orders in magnitude beyond those neutralizing capabilities.
X-ray mutational damage can kill a cell or alter it. If the cell is altered, that change stays with it since the genetic material will replicate the error. If more damage to the genetic material occurs, the results are additive.
Remember that. Radiation damage is cumulative. It never goes away, it is just added to until the cell dies or the genetic aberration results in cancer and resultant organism death.
There is NO safe level of radiation. It is a risk versus benefit game as is all of medicine.
There are those within the medical community who argue (with substantial supporting data) that the 300 million or so x-rays taken each year add up to a very significant factor in cancer mortality and even atherosclerosis. The latter is a result of mutational damage in the endothelium (coronary blood vessel wall) to create a mini tumor nidus from which an atherosclerotic plaque emerges.
Since x-rays always cause damage, and the damage is related to the number and strength of exposures, the obvious solution is to have fewer x-rays and lower dose x-rays. But don't get real comfortable with that either. Recent research has shown that repair of low dose radiation damage to genetic material may be ignored or delayed by cellular repair mechanisms. High doses that kill cells, preventing them from unbridled reproduction (cancer), might be better than the low doses. But high doses create low dose scatter and more widespread potential damage.
How's that for a confusing mess?
The point is that even the experts aren't sure of the degree of damage. But they all are sure of the damage. We should take the hint.
Unfortunately technicians and radiologists do not always critically control x-ray dosing. They are concerned with diagnostic images that are easy to read, not so much with what the x-rays are doing as they are not so gently perambulating through your tissues. Since adverse effects are not immediate and would be impossible to tie to the techniques used, caution can be pretty much thrown to the wind. People do not always behave in your best interests if there are no consequences to them for their actions. I am not saying this always occurs and that medical personnel are not concerned for your safety, just alerting you to the fact the door is wide open for sloppy work.
It is estimated that dose reduction, beam collimation (control), rare-earth screens and filtration, carbon fiber materials, more extensive lead shielding, decrease in contrast resolution and use of a pulsed system in digital radiography and an array of constraining techniques in fluoroscopy could reduce exposure by several fold.
That's what they can do. What you can do is not submit to x-rays unless absolutely necessary. Don't run to the emergency room every time you stub your toe or feel an ache. Don't do everything physicians say without question. Find dentists who will only take x-rays when it can be proven to you it is absolutely necessary. Offer to sign liability waivers if they want. Tell them you have already had too many x-rays and you know the dangers are cumulative.
The bottom line is that the vast majority of x-rays are unnecessary and physicians know it. Any experienced practitioner can usually tell you what's wrong (usually nothing that will not cure itself with a little time) before they even see you, and with a little history taking and palpation (touchy-feely) they can get even closer. But they are hesitant (understandably) to give you their experienced wisdom because they are worried about their liability (rightly so), not your chromosomal damage which will not show up for years and would by then be impossible to relate to their x-rays.
So you must take control over your own body. You make the decision about x-rays, and any other medical intervention for that matter, by getting informed.
Weigh the risk versus the benefit. And remember, any medical intervention is a risk.

Cancer - The Missing Point

Cancer - The Missing Point
 by: Dr Randy Wysong

If one were to judge by television advertising and news reports, it would seem that the "war on cancer" is all but won. What are the weapons being heralded? Drugs, research, tests and exams. They miss the point.
"Prevention" is promoted as meaning catching the disease early. Really. That also misses the point. Is it "prevention" if you call 911 when you come home and see smoke billowing from all your windows? Do we just live with a carpe diem philosophy and wait for the doctor to tell us we have a lump in our breast or a swollen nodular prostate? Is the cause of cancer a lack of one of the new cancer drugs? Is the cause of cancer really unknown, requiring endless research?
First, let me put to rest the propaganda that the war is being won. Since President Nixon declared the war (1971) and after over 200 billion dollars have been spent on research (remember, one billion is a thousand million), more Americans will die of cancer in the next 14 months than have died in all U.S. wars ever fought combined! (Where are the protest marches?) Soon, cancer will overtake heart disease as the number one killer.
Decades ago, early in the war, there were some dramatic successes such as with Hodgkin's disease and some forms of childhood leukemia. There can be little doubt that debunking (surgical removal) of large cancers brings benefits. But the big killers such as colorectal, lung, prostate and breast cancer remain as threatening as ever. Survival gains are measured primarily in additional months (not years) added to life, not in cures. The placebo effect is by and large ignored. (People getting a sugar pill placebo in cancer studies have been known to lose their hair and some actually cure themselves by simply thinking they will be cured.) A percentage of people can experience remissions spontaneously and from simple lifestyle adjustments, but the cancer therapy is always credited with the cure. (Investigations, "Placebo Learning: The Placebo Effect as a Conditioned Response," 1985; 2(1):23. O'Regan B, et al. 1993. Spontaneous Remission: An Annotated Bibliography. Sausalito, CA. Talbot M. 1991. The Holographic Universe. New York. Harper Collins Publishers. Townsend Letter, 2004; 251:32-3.)
Statistics can always be massaged to create the result desired. This practice is rampant in cancer research. Animal models (euphemism for real living and feeling caged creatures being tortured by the millions) do not prove effectiveness across species boundaries to humans. Neither do laboratory cell lines. That's why all the "breakthroughs" based on tumor shrinkage never pan out. For-profit drug companies and National Cancer Institute grant-based research ignore metastases (the spreading cells of cancer through the body) in their positive reports. Instead they highlight and focus on more easily obtained lab results, such as "tumor shrinkage," and on easily manipulated clinical data such as "five-year survival."
Twelve new "improved" drugs introduced in Europe between 1995 and 2000 were no better than the drugs they replaced. But the prices were all higher, in one instance by a factor of 350 times. One new "revolutionary" drug, Erbitux™, found to "shrink" tumors but not extend the lives of patients at all costs $2,400 per week. Avastin™, another costly chemotherapeutic, by the best calculation, extended the lives of 400 colorectal patients by 4.7 months. Tamoxifin™ is proven to be effective in decreasing breast cancer. Risk is decreased by about 15% but what is not equally heralded is the fact that it increased the risk of endometrial uterine cancer by about 15%. (Patient Information: Nolvadex, Zeneca Pharmaceuticals)
Are such results worth the financial devastation and miserable life that chemotherapy, radiation and surgery impose? Is that the way to spend one's remaining days? If such therapy does add a couple of months, are those couple of months really worth the poking, prodding, pain, unrelenting nausea, disfiguring, destruction of the immune system and increased susceptibility to other diseases? "Yes" would be a hard answer to justify.
In the face of a cancer diagnosis most people just throw up their hands in terror and surrender to the conventional cancer therapy death process. The feeling is that something must be done, and, since "doctors know best," one must begin the "fight" by following the advice of the doctor. But fighting does not mean surrendering to the will of another person who has their own personal agenda and narrowed field of view dictated by the club they belong to. That misses the point. You must do something.
Here's the on-point best approach:
1. Prevention means adjusting your life right now so that you are living in tune with your design. Cancer is, quite simply, the reaction of cells subjected long enough to an environment they are not designed for. The genetic apparatus loses its bearings, becomes insane, if you will, and regresses to embryonic infancy and just begins multiplying recklessly. What is the proper environment? It is that food, air, water and lifestyle you are genetically designed for. The proper healthy preventive living context is encapsulated in the Wysong Optimal Health Program™.
2. If you get cancer, don't panic. First thing is follow #1 advice. Learn. Gather as much information as you can from all resources, not just what the medical establishment provides. We try to gather such information for you in The Wysong Directory of Alternative Resources.
3. Think about what has happened in your life that has caused the disease. It is caused, it does not just happen. Correct your life.
4. You take control of your own body and you make the decisions. Determine to set right what is wrong and do it. Taking control is essential to not feeling like a helpless victim and sinking into hopeless despair – a sure mindset to speed the disease along.
5. Think long and hard before submitting to unproven cancer therapies. If the doctor cannot prove effectiveness (at least prove that you will be better off with the therapy than without) and if you are not willing to take the risk of all the contraindications, then don't submit because you think it is "all that can be done." It isn't. See #2 above.
All good things in life are hard. In our modern world, good health takes effort and attention. Preventing and reversing disease also takes effort – your effort. Begin today to take charge of your health and be the best you can be. Most chronic degenerative diseases have long latency periods, the time between when the disease begins and it manifests in overt symptoms. Most everyone reading this has such disease brewing within at this very moment. So take advantage of the window of opportunity and give your body a chance by living the life you were designed to live. That will not only prevent disease from gaining a foothold, but reverse disease that is incubating within.

Huge Advances in Soft Multi-focal Contact Lenses

Huge Advances in Soft Multi-focal Contact Lenses
 by: Steve Cogger

Many of our emerging presbyopes are already accustomed to the comfort of soft contact lenses, switching them to GP multi-focal is far from an ideal solution.
Soft multi-focal contact lenses have been around for a long time, yet the available add power was minimal and the success rate was not at a satisfactory level. Well, those days are over.
Big name contact lens companies like Cooper Vision and Bausch and Lomb have come up with new planned replacement multifocals. These big name manufacturers are only the tip of the iceberg. Unilens, PolyVue, and Blanchard, to name a few, have each created their own successful designs. Varying add powers on many of these lenses allow us to create a truly personalized vision system for our presbyopic patients. There are even successful options for patients with high astigmatism. Westcon and Unilens are just an example of labs that manufacture custom soft toric multi-focals with a high success rate.
As we all know each patient presents a unique case. The most important aspect for any contact lens specialist is to have all these lenses and knowledge of fitting characteristics at their disposal.
Designing a custom vision system for a presbyopic patient takes time and patience on both the practitioner and patients part. As always, patient education and realistic expectations are the most important ingredients for a successful multi-focal fitting.

Are You A One-Dimensional Trainer?

Are You A One-Dimensional Trainer?
 by: Marty Gallagher

Most people are classically biased toward one of the three legs of the fitness triad: progressive resistance training, cardiovascular training or diet/nutrition. How many folks try and lose weight by dieting and dieting alone? A safe bet would be a majority of individuals. Ever wonder why people who lose a lot of bodyweight rapidly still look fat? It's because they are still fat.
When the human organism perceives starvation it reverts to a primordial hardwiring that seeks to preserve body fat (the last line of defense against starvation) at all costs. So dieting alone can results in weight loss but when more muscle than body fat is lost as a result of crash dieting, the end result is not all that impressive.
I had a self-indulgent buddy who balloon up from 200 to 350. He eventually went on some sort of weird diet and lost back down to 200. He looked terrible, loose skin, still fat and to make it all worse he was now a 'diet expert' and told me and anyone else within earshot how stupid they were to follow any diet other than the one he had used. Of course he still couldn't catch a ball or walk up a flight of stairs without getting totally gassed.
At the other extreme I knew a really good long distance runner who was thin as a rail, lived on carbs and eschewed lifting or protein. He became anemic and emaciated the combination of mega-miles and carbs and fruit in meager amounts produced a physique that resembled a famine victim. Lifting weights to his way of thinking would add muscle that he would have to haul around and would have the same impact as wearing a backpack with a 10 or 15-pound plate in it. Needless to say by the time he got to his mid-thirties he started experiencing the usual repetitive motion injuries – knee arthroscopic surgery, ankle ligament damage, eternal shin-splints. He eventually had to give up running altogether.
My third example is a former national level powerlifter

The Poop On Colonics

The Poop On Colonics
 by: Lee Dobbins

Taking care of the colon seems to be a popular trend in health these days. While many in the medical and alternative medicine fields are saying that most disease and illness starts in the colon, there has been a huge demand for information on how to clean and care for this vital organ.
The job of the colon is to absorb water and minerals as well as eliminate the waste or feces that is no longer needed by the body. Some say that a healthy colon will produce 2 or 3 bowel movements a day, shortly after eating. Unfortunately many people do not take proper care of their colons and suffer constipation and illness.
Colon hydrotherapy is becoming a popular way to clean out the colon so that it can function properly. A series of colon cleanses can remove encrusted fecal matter that has been sitting around in your colon for years as well as parasites that can hinder digestion and absorption of minerals.
If you plan to add colonics to your health routine, you should make sure that you see a therapist that is certified and recommended by your doctor. It is important that you follow a course of treatment that is under the supervision of a trained medical person as colon hydrotherapy is serious business. In addition, you will want to make sure you start to eat healthy so that you can keep your colon in tip top shape once your treatment is over.
A colon hydrotherapy session can last up to 45 minutes. During this procedure, a speculum is inserted into the rectum and the colon is filled with water via a tube attached to the speculum. Fecal matter is expelled through a hose leading back to the machine. It is important that you use an experienced hydrotherapist as they will know exactly how much water to use – too much water and it will be painful. The colon hydrotherapy should not hurt at all, although you may experience a bit of gas. Also during the procedure, the therapist may massage your abdomen to help loosen impacted fecal matter.
If you plan on having colon hydrotherapy, be prepared to have several sessions. Depending on how bad your eating habits have been, you could have decades of impacted fecal matter in your colon which may take several sessions to dislodge.

What Disorders Can Acupuncture Treat And How Does It Work?

What Disorders Can Acupuncture Treat And How Does It Work?
 by: Terry Dunn

How did acupuncture start?
The story was met with widespread disbelief.
During a visit to China in 1978, cardiologist Doctor Isadore Rosenfeld witnessed open-heart surgery on a patient, anaesthetised only with acupuncture. A major operation and the patient was awake! Nothing like it had ever been seen before in the west.
But acupuncture is over 5000 years old. There is evidence that it was practiced by the ancient Egyptians. South African tribesmen scratched their bodies to cure disease and the Eskimos used a simple form of acupuncture. In ancient China the Yellow Emperor's bible on internal medicine talks about the importance of acupuncture for curing disease and restoring health.
Today, in China and Taiwan there are over 232,000 traditional Chinese medical doctors practicing acupuncture. In America there are more than 8000 qualified acupuncturists, 16 acupuncture schools and 2 medical schools teaching acupuncture. As a treatment it's accepted and practiced worldwide.
What ailments can acupuncture treat?
Many people assume that acupuncture is used as a simple pain control technique. A technique where needles are inserted to interrupt the nerve pathways that send pain messages to the brain. But acupuncture is much more than this. It's designed to treat any malady and works to balance the energy of your entire body.
Based on clinical experience, it's known that acupuncture can treat a variety of respiratory, eye and mouth, gastro-intestinal, neurological and muscular disorders. It's especially effective on headaches, migraine and back pain.
Acupuncture is also used to stop smoking, lose weight, lower blood pressure, relive constipation, anxiety, insomnia, allergies, asthma and alleviate skin disorders.
How can it treat all these ailments? It works by 'unblocking' and balancing your energy 'circuits'. And unlike conventional drugs, there are only beneficial side-effects such as sleeping better, more energy, deeper breathing and many other bonuses.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture means 'to puncture with a needle'. Fine, flexible needles, about the diameter of a human hair, are inserted into points along the principal meridians of your body.
Your body has a network of energy channels or 'meridians' in which your 'ki' flows. Each meridian is associated with a physiological system and internal organ.
There are 12 principal meridians that run the length of your body and each one has more than 350 acupuncture points. Acupuncture points are specific locations along the meridians. Inserting a needle into a point will 'unblock' or stimulate the energy flow through the meridian in a very predictable and measured way.
What happens during a treatment session?
Acupucture is all part of the philosophy and practice of TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, which uses an intricate system of pulse and tongue diagnosis.
A qualified acupuncturist will also check the 'palpation' of the acupuncture points or meridians, your medical history and any other signs or symptoms of disorder.
The treatment is painless and insertion of the needles can feel like an insect bite or tiny prick. If you are sensitive you will feel warmth or energy flow and is often described as a 'buzz'.
Sometimes moxibustion is used to increase the heat effect at the insertion point. A Chinese herb, 'Moxa', is placed on the needle and lit. This can stimulate the blood flow as well as the 'chi'.
Is acupuncture safe?
Nobody can predict the changes that will occur. Your body will do what it needs to do to heal itself. But the healing process starts with skilful diagnosis and the correct stimulation of precise acupuncture points.
Acupuncture will often compliment traditional western medicine, and in the hands of a trained and properly qualified acupuncturist, you are perfectly safe. And for many people it is enjoyable too.
Although the Chinese may have enjoyed the benefits of acupuncture for many centuries, the legacy of discoveries by men such as Dr Isadore Rosenfeld means we can all benefit from this wonderful treatment.

How Much Time For Fitness? Intensity Trumps Everything

How Much Time For Fitness? Intensity Trumps Everything
 by: Marty Gallagher

What's the minimum weekly time investment you can slide by with and still make gains? I would say six cumulative hours. Six times sixty is 360 minutes and this amount of time would allow for three 60-minute weight training sessions and six 30-minute cardio sessions per week. Assuming you had a serious dietary effort in place, assuming the training was smart, primitive and intense, assuming you were a relatively untrained individual (experienced athletes would find six cumulative hours weekly a plausible maintenance regimen) I could about guarantee that you would make gains with a six hour weekly time investment.
At some point, as with every training program, the gains would cease and you would have to reshuffle the deck BUT the answer to fixing the stagnation might not lie in extending or increasing the amount of time devoted to fitness. Just because gains cease using a six hour regimen does not automatically mean the solution is to train more - the remedy could be to train smarter (change the routine) or harder (generate more intensity) within the allotted six hour timeframe. Folks who train real hard and real intense and don't mess around don't need a lot of gym time. In my opinion, when it comes to triggering progressive resistance gains, intensity trumps everything! By training super hard we don't have to spend hours in the gym.
Home training can reduce the amount of time needed to mount a serious effort even further by eliminating travel time. The commute to and from the commercial fitness establishment takes time and gas. Even when I belonged to clubs and gyms, I always had a flat bench, a set of weights and some adjustable dumbbells lying around at home. Those pressed for time who train at home can slip in sets of curls or overhead presses, shrugs or bent over rows, calf raises or lateral raises, all while discharging household duties. You would be amazed how many sets of presses or curls or tricep presses a person can get in between yard work, dishes, vacuuming, straightening up or watching the news. I used to make myself do a set to failure in a particular exercise while watching football on TV. I might pick the standing overhead press with a set of 70's.
Every time I got up for any reason during the football game I would walk to the laundry room and rep to failure using the solid dumbbells. Walk into the room, clean them to my shoulders and ram them overhead as many times as possible. Then continue on with whatever it was I was doing

Coping Strategies For Back Pain

Coping Strategies For Back Pain
 by: Kim Standerline

One coping strategy becoming more recognised by the medical profession in Back Pain Sufferers are Relaxation Techniques
The importance of relaxation in controlling and treating disease as well as back pain is now starting to be recognized by the general public as well as the medical profession though to be honest the public don't always understand its effectiveness.
Relaxation techniques, especially if they involve meditation, has often been seen as "mumbo jumbo" However within recent years scientists and doctors have discovered immense benefits to meditation in the relief of pain and illness.
Relaxation techniques have a definite place in the healing process of the body, With certain types of back pain the importance of relaxation is increased, since stress and emotional disposition plays a large part in a sufferers life due to their constant pain.
Prayer is a form of relaxation and meditation that works wonders for some people if they have faith. Allowing a minister or someone else to lead you in prayer or formulating your own inspirational prayer can assist you in calling upon the comfort of your God as you see him taking your pain away. Again mental and physical benefits are realized from such a practice.
Hypnosis as another option you can consider. Hypnosis is guided meditation allowing you to access the power of your subconscious mind with the assistance of a qualified hypnotist. The hypnotist can be a qualified psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, or social worker.
Hypnosis for pain management is nothing more than an assisted guided imagery. The only difference here to the relaxation techniques described above is you have someone to help you through the steps of relaxation and meditation on your image.
Relaxation is especially effective for those suffering from fibromyalgia, because this condition is caused by a number of non-physical triggers. Fibromyalgia largely comes from stress, lack of proper sleep, depression, and other emotional duress, and doesn't involve degeneration of the bones or joints. With this in mind, it's easy to see why relaxation techniques help alleviate fibromyalgia so well.
Yoga is very beneficial both for flexibility as well as relaxation. Forms of yoga such as Bhakta are devotional, and Raja is meditation-oriented. They can provide a great deal of healing toward all types of back pain. but specifically fibromyalgia because of the emotional causes of fibromyalgia

Let's Dispel Some Acne Myths

Let's Dispel Some Acne Myths
 by: Jon Davis

It is the bane of a person's existence. Everybody gets it; everybody hates it. And once you have it, prepare to be tormented, embarrassed and humiliated. Such a small bump, so much at stake. So what is this little bundle of horror? What else but the dreaded pimple!
A pimple, or acne as some people calls it, is a dreaded red, swollen bump in the face. Nobody is spared from having it. Male or female, American, Chinese or Puerto Rican, they all have gotten it at some points of their lives and may even still have it. It is like a universal language; it is like a right of passage in a person's life. Acne is a result of the hormones action on the skin's oil glands (the sebaceous gland) which leads to clogged pores and outbreak of lesions like pimples, blemishes or acne. Acne commonly occurs in the neck, face, back, shoulders and chest because the sebaceous glands are most abundant in these locations. But the important question we should be asking to be able to avoid this dreaded "disease" is, "What causes this pain in the neck called acne?"
Unfortunately, the causes of acne cannot really be determined (unless your parents or their parents are acne infested too then there's a big, big chance you'll be called acne face by your peers and classmates) thus the acne myths are born! These myths claim to be the cause of acne. We shall enumerate them here.
Acne Myth Number 1
Acne is caused by not washing your face often and not scrubbing it hard enough. Many believed that acne is caused by dirt and dust in the face and by washing your face two-three even four times a day or even by scrubbing your face hard can prevent acne. Wrong, wrong, wrong! It is true that dirt and dust is unsightly to the face and washing the face is the way to eradicate them but washing often can actually irritate the skin more. Washing should not be done more than twice a day. More than twice is enough to strip the face of its natural oils making it dry. Also, scrubbing can cause inflammations. Washing the face should be done as gently as possible with the gentlest facial scrub.
Acne Myth Number 2
Improper Diet can cause acne. Certain foods that are oily like French fries and junk food can cause acne to erupt in our face. But scientific studies have not discovered any connection between these two. So this means that food does not cause acne. Though a proper and healthy diet is always good for our system, eating like a pig won't make pimples a permanent resident in your face. So feel free to eat your favorite Lay's, French fries and chocolates anytime.
Acne Myth Number 3
When you're stressed acne tends to pop on your face like popcorn pops from a kernel. Not true. Stress is a part of our daily lives and believe it or not it is not a contributing factor to the acne residing in your face. Only severe stress treated by the doctor MAY cause acne to erupt only as a side effect of the drugs a person may be taking. If this is the case, consult your doctor immediately.

Treadmills Prove Health Concerns Are No Longer An Excuse Not To Exercise

Treadmills Prove Health Concerns Are No Longer An Excuse Not To Exercise
 by: Jeff London

Walking has long been praised for its health benefits. It is a simple, easy workout that provides great results. That makes treadmills an ideal piece of exercise equipment. There are no special moves to learn to make it complicated. You already know how to walk, so using the treadmill is no problem. For people with health concerns using a treadmill for exercise is a good option.
Having back or joint problems can shut down an exercise routine fast. Most forms of aerobic exercises involve movements that can put great strain on your body in the places that are already injured. Walking is a low impact, cardiovascular workout that is easy and natural for your body. Using a treadmill allows you to keep up your walking workout all year round, even during less than perfect weather conditions. For someone suffering from pain in their back or joints, using a treadmill is an option they might want to discuss with their doctor.
Another health issue that causes many to abandon exercise is pregnancy. While strenuous exercise is discouraged, light exercise is encouraged. Many woman find that if they exercise during pregnancy they have an easier labor. With treadmill use you are not going to be doing anything that you do not normally do. Even if you didn't exercise much before getting pregnant your doctor probably won't tell you no about using a treadmill. As long as you keep the intensity low and check with your doctor, using a treadmill will help you to be healthier all throughout your pregnancy.
Health problems or concerns have a way of giving people an excuse not to exercise. With walking being one of the most praised exercises by doctors it seems that treadmills may hold the answer to many people's health related excuses. Treadmills allow you to go at your own pace and you never have to stress yourself past a point that feels good for you. Always check with your doctor before starting a treadmill routine.

Orange County Plastic Surgeon Search

Orange County Plastic Surgeon Search
 by: Jeff Lakie

The main problem is that of abundance. Finding an Orange County plastic surgeon is easy, the problem is to find THE Orange County plastic surgeon - the one who will meet your expectations. Start from searching the Internet. There you will probably find about fifty plastic surgeons for a start. When you have the list, start contacting them, one by one. I know this is time consuming, but the plastic surgery is a surgery, not some kind of magic. Narrow your list to those who specialize in the kind of surgery you want to have and visit the clinics.
How can you find the best plastic surgeon available?
Every Orange County plastic surgeon worth choosing will offer you a short walk around the clinic to show you what's going on there. If they ask you to sight tight in an office, it's a big minus. The second checkpoint is the plastic surgery picture. Ask them to show you the "before/after" photos of patients that had similar surgery to yours. Even in Orange County, every plastic surgeon will have to show you the pictures. Check them carefully - if in any of them you will see makeup, resign. All these photos are used for medical purposes and taking photos in makeup means only that there is something to hide. If both the walk and the pictures' check went good, you can get down to business.
Things you should check before the surgery
The prices are quite high in Orange County. Every plastic surgeon living there is a professional, so the prices are "professional" too. Don't worry about the money, though. You are about to have a surgery any saving $300 and risking some surgery complications instead isn't a too bright idea. Remember, it's the professionalism you're looking for, not a discount. Every Orange County plastic surgeon is a professional, but you want to get "the best of the best", don't you? The money you will spend is only a secondary problem then. I say this because we tend to forget about it during any purchases or negotiations and we start thinking only about our money.

Why Use A Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon?

Why Use A Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon?
 by: Jeff Lakie

Beverly Hills is Mecca of all people looking for plastic surgeons, though not many of prospect patients really know why. "Beverly Hills" and "plastic surgeon" are two phrases that are almost inseparable now. Thanks to Extreme Makeover™ and Dr. 90210 TV shows every Beverly Hills plastic surgeon is by definition a good one. And, unlike many other TV-created myths, this one is generally true.
The best specialists are practicing in Beverly Hills.
Almost every plastic surgeon has tried to establish the business there. As the result competition increased and those worse or unable to keep up with competitors were forced to leave. Almost every Beverly Hills plastic surgeon with over three years of practice there is worth their money. Almost every kind of plastic surgery is performed there, and there is virtually no chance of falling into hands of some half-learned doctors who will train their skills on your body. All plastic surgeons from Beverly Hills are top professionals in their industry and there is almost no risk of any complications resulting from the lack of necessary skills.
Looking for Beverly Hills plastic surgeon for you.
Not every Beverly Hills plastic surgeon specializes in film stars. Every year more and more everyday people find there some help in enhancing their personal beauty. The surgeries are becoming more and more popular, easier, quicker and less painful. At the moment you read it, there are tens of people in plastic surgery clinics and hundreds of people who are recovering now after the cosmetic surgeries. Beauty has become one of the mass-produced goods and there is nothing to be afraid of anymore.
Where's the catch?
The catch is still in the surgery price. Beverly Hills is an expensive place and every Beverly Hills plastic surgeon has to send you high bills just to have enough money to rent the house. Unfortunately the top quality means top prices and there is almost no chance that it will change soon. It seems that if you want to avoid risk, you just have to pay them. But don't hesitate - they are surely worth your money.

What Do Plastic Surgery Pictures Look Like?

What Do Plastic Surgery Pictures Look Like?
 by: Jeff Lakie

The plastic surgery pictures usually come in pairs. One shot is taken before the operation, the other - after it. You can see them almost at every plastic surgery website and finding them is not a problem. Trouble begins when you want to use them to make up your mind about the results of the plastic surgery you want to have.
Which plastic surgery pictures are the good ones?
It is very easy to retouch these pictures. And I'm not talking only about using Adobe Photoshop - such plain dishonesty won't work in the long run. But plastic surgery pictures can be taken in such way that they will hide more than they will show. Look only for the pictures that have the qualities described below:
(1) There should be several plastic surgery pictures of one patient. They should be taken from different angles to give you better view of what actually has changed.
(2) The patient should not wear any makeup. It is quite common to take "before" shots when patients don't wear any makeup and "after" shots - when they wear it. Such plastic surgery pictures are almost useless.
(3) The lighting should be similar in both "before" and "after" pictures. Playing with lighting can change things in the plastic surgery pictures just as good as the Acrobat Photoshop.
How can we actually use them?
The first usage is quite obvious: we use plastic surgery pictures to see what we can expect from, for example, breast augmentation. But there is also one more way we can use them. You simply HAVE TO see the plastic surgery pictures of you prospect doctor's patients. Almost all patients in plastic surgery clinics are photographed, so all the photos should be available at the clinic. If they refuse to show them or if they don't match the "good plastic surgery pictures" description (see above), you'd better reconsider your decision. Even if they aren't the effects of doctor's dishonesty, they tell about sloppiness of the clinic's work. If they can't take the proper pictures, how can they perform the serious and delicate surgery?

What Is Cholesterol

What Is Cholesterol
 by: Jan Nicholas

In order to understand why it is important to lower cholesterol, it is necessary to first understand what cholesterol is. Cholesterol is a fatlike waxy substance and is produced by the liver. Although cholesterol has purposes and is important to overall health and body function, too much cholesterol in the body has damaging effects.
Cholesterol forms every cell within the body. When the cholesterol level is appropriate, it plays a life-giving role in many functions of the body. When cholesterol is at a good level it works to build and repair cells, produces hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, and produces bile acids which are proven to aid in the digestion of fat.
With too much cholesterol in the body, though, the levels build up and cause damage by clogging your arteries. This puts you at serious risk for disease such as heart and stroke. In fact, the major cause behind heart attacks and strokes is clogged arteries resulting from high levels of cholesterol.
When you eat saturated foods such as dairy, meat and eggs your cholesterol elevates. On the other hand when you eat foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains you can maintain optimal health as they do not contain cholesterol.
High cholesterol can be avoided! With a nutritious diet, the 50% of all adult Americans with high cholesterol can regain their health and lower their risk of disease by 2%. This is done simply from reducing cholesterol by 1%.
Cholesterol can be managed for life with success! It is recommended that you visit your physician on a regular basis to keep a keen eye on your levels.

Fats & Cholesterol

Fats & Cholesterol
 by: Bruce Reid

For years we heard that a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet would keep us healthy and help us lose weight. And many of us jumped on the bandwagon, eliminating fat and high-cholesterol foods from our diets.
Well, unfortunately, we were doing it all wrong.
Instead of eliminating fat completely, we should have been eliminating the bad fats, the fats associated with obesity and heart disease and eating the good fats, the fats that actually help improve blood cholesterol levels. Before we examine the good fats and bad fats, let's talk about cholesterol.
Cholesterol - It's been ingrained into our brains that cholesterol causes heart disease and that we should limit our intake of foods that contain it, but dietary cholesterol is different than blood cholesterol. Cholesterol comes from two places first, from food such as meat, eggs, and seafood, and second, from our body.
Our liver makes this waxy substance and links it to carrier proteins called lipoproteins. These lipoproteins dissolve the cholesterol in blood and carry it to all parts of your body. Our body needs cholesterol to help form cell membranes, some hormones, and Vitamin D.
You may have heard of good and bad cholesterol.Well,high-density lipoproteins (HDL) carry cholesterol from the blood to the liver. The liver processes the cholesterol for elimination from the body.
If there's HDL in the blood, then less cholesterol will be deposited in the coronary arteries. That's why it's called good cholesterol. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL), carry cholesterol from the liver to the rest of the body. When there is too much in the body, it is deposited in the coronary arteries. This is not good. A build-up of cholesterol in our arteries could prevent blood from getting to parts of our heart. That means that our heart won't get the oxygen and nutrients it needs, which could result in heart attack, stroke, or sudden death.
So, if your LDL is higher than your HDL, you're at a greater risk for developing heart disease. It may come as a surprise, but recent studies have shown that the amount of cholesterol in our food is not strongly linked to our blood cholesterol levels.
It's the types of fats you eat that affect your blood cholesterol levels. Bad Fats - There are two fats that you should limit your intake of.Saturated and trans fats.
Saturated Fats - Saturated fats are mostly animal fats. You find them in meat, whole-milk products, poultry skin, and egg yolks. Coconut oil also has a high amount of saturated fat.
Saturated fats raise both the good and bad blood cholesterol.
Trans Fats - Trans fats are produced through hydrogenation heating oils in the presence of oxygen. Many products contain trans fats because the fats help them maintain a longer shelf life. Margarine also contains a high amount of trans fats.
Trans fats are especially dangerous because they lower the good cholesterol, HDL and raise the bad cholesterol, LDL.Unfortunately, most products do not tell you how much trans fat it contains, but you can find out if it's in a product by looking at the ingredient list. If the ingredients contain hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils, then it contains trans fats.
Fortunately in 2006, manufacturers will be required to list the amount of trans fat in their products on the nutrition labels, so it will be easier for you to find.
Good Fats - Some fats actually improve cholesterol levels. Polyunsaturated Fats - Polyunsaturated fats are found in sunflower, corn, and soybean oils. These oils contain Omega-6, an essential fatty acid. However, most people get enough Omega-6 in their diet and instead need more Omega-3. Omega-3 is a fatty acid found in fish and walnuts.
Monounsaturated Fats - Monounsaturated fats are found in canola, peanut, and olive oils. Both types of unsaturated fats decrease the bad cholesterol, LDL and increase the good cholesterol, HDL.
Now, just because the unsaturated fats improve your blood cholesterol levels, you don't have the go-ahead to eat all of the olive oil, butter and nuts you want.Fat of any kind does contain calories, and if you're trying to lose weight, eat fat in moderation, and stay away from saturated fats.

Finding the RIGHT Diet Pill

Finding the RIGHT Diet Pill
 by: Amy S. Grant

Hundreds of products on the market today claim to be the best weight loss product available. How can you know which one is right for you, or which ones even work?
Of course, the best possible way to lose weight and get in shape is to eat right and exercise. But even when we commit to a diet and exercise program, we often want that extra "boost" to keep us lose some weight quickly and stay motivated.
If you're starting a new fitness plan, and you want to "jump-start" your results by adding a weight loss pill, here are some pointers for sorting through the "fluff" to find what really works.
Step #1: Select an all-natural product.
Modern science and advances in healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry have made a tremendous impact on our society, but not always for the better. Take Fen-Phen, for example. This is a perfect demonstration that the true effects of such "miracle pills" cannot truly be known until the drug has experienced widespread use for several years. Better to be safe than sorry – choose an all-natural supplement for weight loss.
Step #2: Know what you're buying.
If you're buying a product from a store, read the label and ask to read any available package inserts. If you're making your selection online, be sure the web site lists all the active ingredients. Remember, if the product doesn't say "all-natural" it's probably not. Read all the product information so you know exactly what you're buying.
Step #3: Don't get suckered.
With so many people seeking weight loss products, and with so many products that promise results and don't deliver, some companies choose to prey on the feeling of desperation that overweight Americans feel. Before you spend your hard-earned money on an expensive product, ask what kind of guarantee the company offers. Legitimate companies will offer a free sample, to allow you to "try before you buy," and some will even stand behind their product by offering a money-back guarantee. Additionally, if the company is subscription based (in other words, you sign up with your credit card and the product auto-ships to you at regular intervals), ensure that you can cancel the subscription at any time. You wouldn't want to sign a contract for a one-year supply only to find that it didn't work for you, or that it worked so well, you no longer needed it after a few months!
Step #4: Try it for yourself.
Take advantage of free samples, and see results for yourself. Everyone's body chemistry is different, so trying a product will give you an idea of whether a particular pill works for you personally. Actually trying a supplement for yourself is the best way to evaluate whether it's right for you.
Step #5: Track your results.
By tracking your results, you'll know which products are working for you. It's a good idea to record your starting weight, body measurements, body fat percentage and BMI (your gym or your doctor can do all of these for you). Remember that fat weighs more than muscle, so the scale alone may not reflect all the changes your body is experiencing. Keep a journal of your stats and also record how you're physically feeling – this will enable you to determine whether your overall energy level is improving.
Of all the products we reviewed, one stands above the rest in meeting these five guidelines: NiteTrim. The company offers a free 30-day supply, which can be found at http://www.NiteTrimDirect.com.
By following the five steps above, you can ensure that you find the weight loss supplement that's right for you, and you'll be on your way to a healthier, leaner you!

Are There Hormones in Your Whey Protein?

Are There Hormones in Your Whey Protein?
 by: Will Brink

One question that has popped up a few times in my email in box relates to the issue of hormones in whey protein supplements. Are there hormones in your whey? It?s not a simple "yes" or "no" answer I am sorry to say, but the short answer is, people have nothing to fear.
Being an animal based product derived from milk, whey, like any animal based product, could potentially contain some naturally occurring hormone(s). The issue is, which hormone and in what amounts?
Modern testing abilities being as sensitive as they are today, being able to search for things in parts per million (ppm), parts per billion (ppb) or even parts per trillion (ppt) in some cases, some hormone of some kind can be found in virtually anything we humans ingest, especially if it is derived from an animal source (though plants also often contain some naturally occurring hormones or hormone-like compounds).
So what's the scoop on whey? The major concern seems to revolve around: Steroid based sex hormones (e.g., testosterone, etc.) Growth hormones and or growth factors (e.g., IGF-1, bovine growth hormone or bovine somatotropin, etc) Non-hormonal compounds such as anti biotic contamination. I will attempt to address those in particular to clear up any fears or confusion over the matter.
Are there any steroids in your whey?
Steroid hormones being highly lipophilic (soluble in fat) will be found in the lipid (fat) portion of whey, or any milk based product for that matter. Any high grade whey isolate (WPI) is essentially fat free (read my article "The Whey it is" to understand the differences in the types and quality of whey proteins in back issues of Muscular Development or at my web site at: http://www.brinkzone.com/wheyitis.html).
For example, CFM isolate contains less than one tenth of one gram of actual dairy fat per 20 gram (20,000 milligrams) serving, which is approximately one standard scoop found in most products.
The additional fat listed on the can of most whey isolate products generally comes from the addition of small amounts of lecithin, which is not an animal based lipid, and or the flavoring system being employed. An ion exchange whey - though not an optimal whey protein in my opinion as explained in "The Whey it is" - will contain even less fat.
So, the reality is sex hormone levels in the lipid portion of milk fat and or fat in whey is so low as to be either non -testable or virtually non testable. Add to that fact that whey isolates are virtually fat free, and it's easy to see this is a non-issue.
Are there any growth hormones in your whey?
As for growth hormone(s) such as bovine somatotropin (BST) and IGF-1, etc., that's a bit more complicated. Growth factor hormones (e.g., BST, IGF-1, etc.) are protein based hormones (versus steroid based hormones discussed in the previous section) and thus, can be found in the protein fraction of animal based products, such as muscle, milk, etc.
However, we will keep the discussion of these hormones specific to whey as that's what this article is about right? Milk, and thus whey protein, does contain minute amount of BST.
BST is simply the bovine (cow) form of growth hormone cows produce naturally. In humans, it's called Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which is produced in the pituitary gland and is also a popular anti aging drug many people are using to fight the effects of aging.
However, and this is the essential point, BST is not found in higher levels then would be found if the animals were not treated with BST. That is, whether they treat the animals with BST or not, they find the BST levels in milk to be found in minute amounts and in the normal "background" levels.
What are the levels of BST found in milk? It ranges from approximately zero - ten parts per billion (PPB) and typical level found in milk is 3ppb. That translates into approximately 1 mcg (one millionth of a gram) per liter. That ladies and gents is what we call a truly miniscule amount.
To add to the above, protein based hormones such as BST-naturally occurring or otherwise - are quite delicate and digestion of these proteins means they are destroyed when ingested. To sum up, I consider the risk from BST to be again, a non-issue. Don?t forget, the issue has been looked at extensively by the scientific community.
For example:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) looking at this issue stated "The composition and nutritional values of milk from bST-supplemented cows is essentially the same as milk from untreated cows... (M)eat and milk from rbST-treated cows are as safe as that from untreated cows." (NIH Technology Assessment Conference Statement on Bovine somatotropin. JAMA. 1991:265:1423-1425).
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) said on the issue "The FDA has answered all questions and concerns about the safety of milk from bST-supplemented cows..." (JAMA. 1990:264:1003-1005).
The journal Science stated "The data evaluated by the FDA documented the safety of food products from animals treated with rbGH." (Bovine Growth Hormone: Human Food Safety Evaluation. Science. 1990:249:875-884.).
Yes folks, no matter what hysterical issues some people have tried to raise with BST, the data and the facts simply does not support the hysteria. It's a non-issue to human health. However, and it should be noted, that may not be the case for the cows themselves, just as large amounts of HGH can be problematic for humans, and that issue is currently being evaluated.
They may stop giving cows BST due to the health issues it presents to cows, but not due to any health issues to humans. So read my lips here gang, it won't matter if the milk is taken from "organic" non BST treated cows or not, the BST levels appear to remain the same and are (a) found in miniscule amounts and (b) in all probability are destroyed during digestion.
Yes, there can differences in the amounts of some compounds (pesticide for example) between some organic foods (e.g., fruits and vegetables) and non-organic foods, but BST simply is not one of them.
As for Insulin-like growth factor one (IGF-1) that's more interesting and relevant, though it still appears to be a non issue to human health. Different whey product will have varying levels of IGF-1 depending on many variables such as: whether it?s a concentrate (WPC) or an Isolate (WPI), how it's produced, and even what time of the year the milk is taken from the cows, and so on.
So, I can't give the levels for every form and type of whey (see aforementioned article above "The Whey it is" to understand different types of whey).
As an example (cause I have the numbers handy on my desk and it's the form of whey I personally use!), CFM isolates have approximately 35 micrograms (mcg) of IGF per 100g of powder (recall standard scoop is 20g).
Remember, we are not talking gram amounts here but micrograms, which is one millionth of a gram! 35 micrograms could not even be seen by the human eye. Could there be any negative physiological effects to consuming this amount of IGF-1?
Add to the reality how unstable and sensitive to digestion protein based hormones are, it's highly unlikely. Being a well-known anabolic/anti catabolic hormone, I bet most bodybuilders wished the levels of IGF-1 in whey where much higher!
{Side note: there is a whey product known as Bioactive Whey Fraction (BAWF) protein that has bumped up levels of IGF-1 and other growth factors that should be on the market shortly. Read "The Whey it is" for more info on that if interested.}
Recall that IGF-1 was made a bit of a boogieman hormone when a link (correlation) was found between IGF-1 levels and prostate cancer. However, that association was not found in later studies and any cause and effect relationship between the two is fuzzy at best, and even contradictory according to some studies.
For example, some doctors find that PSA levels (used as a predictor of prostate cancer) often drops when giving older men growth hormone (which increase IGF-1 levels) which is not what one would expect to find if IGF-1 was a cause of prostate cancer nor is IGF-1 levels correlated to PSA levels.
Of course being a growth factor, able stimulate cell division and cell differentiation, it has been theorized that like other growth factors (e.g., GH, epidermal, transforming, platelet derived, fibroblast, nerve, and ciliary neurotrophic growth factors and others) IGF-1 could stimulate the growth of some cancers.
This is far from proven however and far far more complicated then it appears on the surface. For example, IGF-1 levels, as well as GH, are intimately connected the immune system, and have a wide range of essential effects on the body, such as keeping bodyfat levels low and muscle mass levels up, bone formation, and 1000 other effects. So, painting IGF-1 as a bad guy hormone is both unscientific and simply incorrect.
Would a person with a hormone dependent liver cancer want to inject (versus eat) large amounts of IGF-1 or GH? Probably not, but even that is unclear at this time.
Let's not forget the incidence of prostate cancer increases with age in men but blood levels of IGF-1 and GH decline significantly with age.
The etiology of prostate cancer is a highly complex, and not fully understood interaction between diet, genetics, an inflammatory process, and hormones such as testosterone, DHT, estradiol, and other physiological variables and hormones both known and yet unknown.
The bottom line here is, microgram amounts of IGF-1 found in whey poses minimal (because no thing on earth we eat poses zero risk!) to a non-existent risk, and may even help us in some ways.
For example, IGF-1 has been shown to improve some gastrointestinal diseases and pathology, reduces muscle loss during certain disease states and other beneficial effects.
It's also essential to remember from the many articles that have been published on whey (written predominantly by yours truly) that whey has been studied extensively for it's effects on cancer specifically, and across the board has been found to prevent various forms of cancer in animals (with human data strongly suggesting the same effects in people), improve immunity, and other positive effects, such as possibly improve performance and treat over training syndrome (OTS) in athletes.
Thus, it's clear any increased risks from ingesting miniscule amounts of IGF-1 found in whey - if there are any at all - are offset by the many positive health effects of this well studied protein.
Are there any anti biotics in whey?
Finally, we can address the possibility of any contamination from the anti-biotics given to the cows that may find it's way into the milk and then the whey.
Several studies have found that in a small number of cases anti-biotic residues could be detected in commercial milk. This has caused some people to use organic non-treated milk.
Having done extensive consulting work in the whey industry, I can tell you all major manufacturers of whey protein powders test constantly for anti biotic residues, as the milk industry in general does.
The major whey manufacturers I have worked with test every single batch of incoming milk for anti-biotic residues and reject any batch that finds any amount, no matter how small. Only milk that gets an ND (non detectable) stamp of approval after testing is used to produce the whey.
Thus, there are no anti biotic residues in your whey supplements. I can?t personally vouch for all whey manufacturers as I have not done consulting work for all whey manufacturers, but the handful I have worked with had an extreme level of quality control over the issue, and I have no reason to suspect other companies are not just as anal about it.
Conclusion
I hope the above clears up any fears or confusion regarding questions people may have had regarding whey. Considering how much research is out there on whey and its many positive effects on such a wide range of things, such as immunity, possibly preventing some cancers, improving performance, etc., I know whey will remain a staple part of my diet for many years to come. It's off to blend up some whey for me!

Natural Supplements - Help Your Body

Natural Supplements - Help Your Body
 by: Martin Smith

Vitamins and mineral supplements are a good way to supply your body with nutrients that you might not be getting from your diet. Go down any vitamin aisle in a drugstore, market, or health food store. The first thing you will see is all the 'natural' supplements and vitamin complex tablets that all claim to provide all kinds of benefits. There are supplements that claim to help you lose weight without exercise. Does it sound too good to be true? It is. You have to burn more calories than you consume and exercise will help you accomplish that but I digress. If you are considering adding supplements to your diet have a discussion with your doctor will help to determine whether or not adding supplements would be beneficial for you or not.
Are vitamins necessary for optimum health? Most people, if they eat a healthy diet, do not need them. Most vitamins are fine and are not harmful. If someone does not eat a healthy diet or because of illness has a limited diet a vitamin supplement could be very helpful. Fruits and vegetables have important vitamins in them and should not be eliminated from a diet unless a doctor orders it. In this case a supplement would almost be necessary. Your body needs vitamins to keep it functioning.
Most people think that vitamins are a source of energy that is not the case. Vitamins help regulate the body's metabolism. Vitamins also help the food we eat to release its energy. It's the food that when absorbed and broken down into the nutrients the body can use that provides our body with energy. The body more easily absorbs calcium if you are also taking Vitamin D. Most calcium supplements are already fortified with vitamin D. There are thirteen vitamins that are all important to achieve optimum health. Vitamins E & C contain antioxidants. Antioxidants help to release free radicals, which are high-energy particles. These high-energy particles damage healthy blood cells. Studies are now coming out that indicate that the consumption of vitamins and supplements may aid in fighting cancer and preventing other chronic diseases. The research is by no means conclusive in this regard. Studies continue to be conducted in an effort to provide us with the ultimate health.
There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. An excess amount of vitamins in your system could cause bleeding, negative interactions with some prescription medications.
Listed below are some vitamins and how overdoses can affect you. Vitamin A - Too much vitamin A can cause neurological problems Vitamin D - Too much vitamin D disrupts the balance of calcium in the body that can lead to calcium deposits in the soft tissues of the body. Vitamin C - Too much vitamin C can lessen the effectiveness of other medications. Vitamin E - Too much vitamin E can cause blood not to clot and can cause other bleeding issues.
Vitamins are just one tool among many that are available to us to help us get healthy and remain healthy. Vitamins alone will not do this. A healthy diet, exercise, and regular health checkups will do this.
No one knows better than I do how important it is to eat properly and take care of my body. Also, like many others I have a tendency to be drawn to the junk food much to my own detriment. You don't have to be an Olympic athlete to get some exercise in. I also take vitamins and other supplements to help my body work better.
There are a variety of opinions about vitamins, supplements, and healthy eating. Vitamins are generally ok unless they are fortified with iron. The effectiveness of vitamins with iron is often hotly debated. Too much iron can cause iron overload and it doesn't get 'washed' out of the blood as efficiently if at all. There is a disease called Hemochromatosis, which is fatal, as it attacks liver function. It can be controlled and there must be liver function tests done among other things. The controversy continues to reign.
You have complete control in this area. Do your research; there are a great number of websites that provides information on supplements and how they work. You should sit down with your physician and discuss your options. S/he may suggest you meet with a nutrition specialist as well. Get smart and be healthy. A little knowledge is a very good thing and in the case of vitamins the more you know how they work and how they could be harmful, the safer and healthier you will be. Trust your instincts, know your body, and get help if you need it. Good eating, good exercise plenty of water and common sense will help you to meet your goal of good health.

Bifocal Contact Lenses - Improving Vision

Bifocal Contact Lenses - Improving Vision
 by: Martin Smith

Thick lenses with a line across them were the only option available to those who had nearsightedness and farsightedness. The frames for glasses in general were heavy and very unattractive. The problem with wearing bifocals was getting used to them. You need to look either up or look down especially going down stairs. Adjusting to wearing bifocals made some people feel dizzy.
People had only one choice if they wore bifocals, eyeglasses. When contacts hit the market bifocals still had to be in eyeglasses. That was then and this is now. Those who wear eyeglasses may have far fewer choices than those who wear contact lenses may. Many people are happy because now contact lenses come in contact lenses. Contact bifocals are available in rigid, soft, and gas permeable materials.
Who needs to wear bifocal contact lenses? People focusing on near objects who have trouble. The name of what they suffer with is Presbyopia. Over the age of 40 is when this usually happens.
Alternating Design and Bifocal Eyeglasses are alike because one half of the lens enables distance vision and the other allows you to see near. Lenses that try to blend both near and distance prescriptions fill in the pupil area and are called Simultaneous Design. Your eyes will learn to interpret the circle power choices depending on how near or far you are looking.
The radial of contact lenses is the concentric design lens. The inner lens will work on either the nearness vision or the distant vision and so can the outer part of the lens.
Translating design contacts are similar to bifocal eyeglasses where the distant correction is above the nearness vision correction. A line makes the lenses separate. The bottom of the lens is flat to keep it from moving around in your eye when you blink.
Both distant and near vision are located at the center of the Asferic Design lenses. The near correction in the center is surrounded by distance correction.
Sometimes they can be reversed in some situations. You and your doctor can decide that.
With mono-vision design lenses you have one power lens in one eye and then the other power lens in the other eye. Usually the distant vision lens is worn in the dominant eye. An examination by your doctor will be able to determine this.
There are also simultaneous vision lenses. Your eyes can focus on things that are both near and far at the same time. Distant and near correction is concentric rings. The near and far parts of the lens are in sight all the time so the light from both distant and near objects can be focused on at the same time.
Simultaneous vision contact lenses have a problem. The light from the near part of the lens will go through the distant part and vice versa when the eye is looking through it. Both in focus and out of focus can be taken in by the eye at the same time.
The brain has to figure out which is the correct image. Whether contact lenses are bifocals or not, you must obtain a prescription. Your eye doctor will do a very thorough exam to decide if you are a candidate for bifocal contacts and what type might be right for you.
Lenses that fit and are comfortable may take time to find, as with any contact lens there is an adjustment. Bifocal lenses may not be for you, at least not in the contact lenses currently available.
There may be contact lenses out there, don't give up.Do your research if you really want contacts and need bifocals and keep informed on the types of lenses available to you. There are resources available online, through your eye care physician, and in some cases right from the manufacturer.
There are discount websites for contact lenses and some manufacturers will give you a coupon for their lenses if you try them. Your budget will affect your decision about bifocal lenses without a doubt.
Check with friends and family who wear contacts and see what their experience was like. Although not everyone has the same experience, the information could help you and your doctor make the decision. Bifocal contact lenses are available now for people with astigmatism.
Toric contact lenses come in both color and disposable lenses. Check with your eye doctor about Toric lenses because some professionals are uncomfortable fitting them.
