Diet Is A Four Letter Word!!!

Diet Is A Four Letter Word!!!
 by: D.S. Epperson

Good health is decided largely by personal habits and lifestyles. Choices that influence health negatively can be the use of tobacco products, alcohol, illicit drug use and the stress of a high paced life. The most important factor in establishing and maintaining good health is good nutrition. The 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and health states: ?For the two out of three adult Americans who do not smoke and do not drink excessively, one personal choice seems to influence longterm health prospects more than any other: What we eat.? This was confirmed in the 1989 National Research counsel Report ?Diet and health? and in the 1990 International Life Sciences Institute ? Nutrition Foundation Book, ?Present Knowledge in Nutrition.?
Establishing what is an acceptable diet is highly unsettled in today's debate between the extreme and the conservative. On one side of the argument there are those that only accept the natural or organic as allowable foods. Animal tissue and products are completely unacceptable in the diet, and any food that has been processed at all is less than desirable. Some call this a ?Caveman? diet or ?Grazing?, a menu that keeps the individual as close to nature as possible. Vitamins, Minerals, Proteins and other supplements are often taken to boost the nutritional needs of the individual for optimal health, so long as they are easily assimilated in the system and come from food sources. For those who are recovering from chronic or acute illnesses, these diets can be most challenging but are most times the only choice for correcting bad health.
The more conservative groups say that eating correctly from the USDA Eating Right Pyramid will give you everything that the body needs for proper nutrition and health. The latter claim does not however, take in to consideration, the depletion of natural vitamins and minerals from the soil due to modern farming methods, depletion due to storage and the depletion of nutrients when foods are processed to keep them from spoiling.
Moderation and sensibility seem to be the best approach to good health. Eat healthy foods in a satisfying amount. Avoid foods that have been processed, for example, white flour, white sugar (Including artificial substitutes), white salt and white rice. Substitute those with things that are palatable like FlourBlend, which is all natural, whole grain and enriched with a blend of herbs and supplements designed to increase the health of the human body, SugarBlend, which is an all natural blend of sugars, herbs and fiber to increase immunity and decrease blood sugar spikes, sea salt, brown rice and the natural sweetness in fruits. Try to keep the consumption of stockyard meats to about 3-12 ounces per week. Substitute fresh fish, organic turkey and lamb in the diet when more protein is wanted. When the desire for sweets overcomes the soul and fruit doesn't cut it...make it a real treat, not a habit. Then savor it, let it melt in the mouth, don't devour it so fast that you lose the ability to taste what it was that you were craving in the first place. Try to eat out of a garden, be it container or the back 40 acres. It can be satisfying to raise you own food, and relaxing at the same time. Remember that supplementation is important in these modern times since diets, conservative or extreme, lack the nutrition that our bodies need today to fight disease.
Be sensible, if you've got good health, then adjust your diet a little at a time, try new vegetables and fruits in new recipes, but consume better foods and then learn how to use them with a partner. Pay attention to what it is that you are eating; make sure that you can taste what you are putting into your mouth. Listen to your body, it will usually tell you that it wants. Drink good water, drink good water, drink good water! You'll need to consume 100ounces per day to take the toxins out of your body successfully. Exercise is also very important. You don't need to spend a lot of money on health spa's or equipment. Gallon milk jugs filled with water is a good weight to start lifting, dancing with your partner or kids is good aerobics, just as long as your muscles get a good work out three times a week for 45 minutes, dancing for 20 minutes a day and doing flexibility or stretching for 10 minutes a day. you can play with your kids, lifting, pushing, pulling for 45 minutes, dance with them for 20 and let them help stretch you out of 10, then sit down to a healthy variety of foods that the family has prepared together. You will accomplish a better relationship with your family, establish a lifetime pattern for family interaction, and improve your health and the health of your loved ones in a short period of time during your busy day.

.Low Carb Diets. on the way out...Taste is Back!!!

"Low Carb Diets" on the way out...Taste is Back!!!
 by: D.S. Epperson

To see the "low carb" diets on the way out is a somewhat reflective process, not that I was an advocate of ketogenic diets at all unless you have Adolescent Epilepsy, but bringing the "low carb or ketogenic diet" into the forefront of our American Society meant that more people were being educated about obesity, food and eating.
This acknowledgment about food was astounding and became overwhelming , causing restaurant chains and some farmers to really suffer from these trendy diets, people have lost farms that have been in their families for years , businesses that lend job and economic stability to an area, have gone out of business or lost business, all on a dietary whim, with no research done on the side-effects of "not eating" what these diets restrict.
"What side effects?" you ask. Okay, so you've lost a bunch of weight by eating tons of meat and fat, maybe your cholesterol numbers aren't out of reach, but, have you had your bowels checked lately? You know, eating that much meat and fat can only do one thing to your intestines and colon, and that's putrefying products in the bowels. Pretty disgusting, huh?
As you grow older, you lose the ability to digest food like you use to when you were young and had lots of enzymes . Sometimes, that comes from just age, but sometimes it comes from disease and antibiotic use, the point being that, the low carb diet's started you out on food that you may not be able to absorb anyway so you haven't been absorbing the vitamins and minerals that your body needs to start, process or finish some important tasks.
"So what's the harm in that", you may say, "I've lost weight and feel great, and I don't feel sick". You probably wouldn't. There are illnesses that you never see coming until it's to late. One of the leading causes of Colon Cancer, is eating an over abundance of meat and fat, and not having the ability to digest that protein and fat in the system. When enough damage is done, you don't absorb minerals and vitamins like you are suppose to, and you start to develop other problems, more serious problems, like cancers.
I will have to admit, that the "Atkins" type diets do advocate not eating the processed and manufactured foods that break down so fast into sugars you can almost hear run into the veins! And that is still true, the human body was designed to do the work of breaking down complex carbohydrates into a more simple usable energy. The break down of a whole grain, fresh vegetable or fruit product also take a certain amount of energy, so not only does your body use energy to break this healthy food down, you also have the benefit of a lot of fiber, which will keep the intestines and colon clean and functioning well.
So, what's the next trend, I think the next trend is going to be the "old fashion" weight loss plan. This is a tried and true method of weight loss that anyone can do and it tastes great. This would involve healthy, low or slow absorbing carbohydrates, counting and burning calories, and exercise! A balanced diet, along with knowing how many calories you need to eat per day, to either maintain your weight, or lose weight, and an exercise program to give your bones and muscles a reason to stay strong, not a trendy type diet, but a healthy lifestyle that you can live with for the rest of your life, that still has room for an occasional treat now and then. "Low carb" is out, the new trend is "healthy and better tasting proportions".

Eating for Health, Happiness and Successful Weight Control

Eating for Health, Happiness and Successful Weight Control
 by: Dr. William Parsons

Don't diet, just eat and lose weight!
First, the following "diet" is really not a diet, in the conventional sense, but a natural way of eating. It allows one to eat essentially anything one wishes, while attaining weight loss or weight control goals and consuming the necessary nutrients for a long and healthful life. The term "diet" implies restrictions by either eliminating or radically reducing the intake of certain foods or food groups. Most diets are inappropriate, unhealthful (some are even dangerous) and ultimately doomed to fail.
The most important objective of eating any food is to provide the body with all the essential nutrients for a long and healthful life. Almost every food provides some element needed by your body. If you do not care about being healthy, avoiding sickness and disease and living a long life, then this natural way of eating is not for you. The second most important reason for eating any food is because you enjoy it and it makes you happy. It is highly unlikely that you will consistently, and for long term, eat foods that you do not enjoy. Similarly, it is extremely unlikely that you will be able to completely eliminate foods that you do enjoy from your diet.
Many diets and dieticians expect a person to continually keep count of every calorie, carbohydrate and/or gram of fat that enters your mouth! Again, what is likelihood of being able to maintain this tedious ritual for any meaningful length of time? Nothing could be more depressing and stress-inducing as the constant monitoring of calories, carbs or fat. Therefore, if enjoying your meals is not important to you, then this natural way of eating is probably not for you.
Finally, you should eat food to maintain an appropriate weight for your height and frame. Being over-weight or under-weight is not conducive to a long, healthful life nor does it promote a positive self image. If being too heavy or too thin is not important to you, than this natural way of eating may not be for you.
Tips for Successful Weight Control
Lose or gain weight because you want to and not to please others.Otherwise, you will not be sufficiently motivated to change your bad eating habits. In fact, when the inevitable happens and you fail to achieve you goal, it will reinforce and, most probably, escalate the inappropriate behavior (i.e. over-eating, exclusively eating junk food, bulimia, etc.)
You must begin this natural way of eating with a positive outlook and the belief that you can achieve your goals with a minimal amount of effort. If you lack the self-confidence and motivation, or you do not believe that you can lose or gain weight, you will not!
It is extremely important for you to learn about the nutrients contained in the foods you eat. This is the only part of this natural way of eating that requires some effort on your part. The only way to accomplish this is to read. The internet is probably the best and easiest venue for obtaining this type of information. The following are excellent sources of health and nutrition-related information:
Medline Plus - http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/foodnutritionandmetabolism.html
Food and Nutrition Information Center - http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/
McKinley Health Center - http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/
USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory - http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/
Remember, the key to weight control is to be healthy, happy and fit. You must understand which foods will provide these three, all-important elements. Believe it or not, there are foods which you enjoy that are actually good for you!
Incredibly, many overweight people actually do not eat enough! Listen to your body, not your mind. Your body knows when it has had the appropriate amount of food and, more importantly, the appropriate amount of nutrition. Because many people do not understand nutrition, they eat food that does not supply sufficient nutrients to the body. They will feel hungry even after a large meal because theirs bodies are "starving" for proper nutrition. For this reason, most diets do not work or the individual cannot stay with the diet because it is an unnatural way of eating. Your body literally believes it is starving; therefore, it will take actions to survive the famine. It is a self-preservation mechanism, if you will. The body begins drawing off your muscles and stores the fat for later use in the event that it does not receive the necessary nourishment for an extended period of time. When a person finally falls off the diet (which is inevitable), they gain back all the lost weight and, in many cases, even more! The reason is because it takes the body sometime to adjust from its self-preservation mode, so all the food that is consumed is stored as fat while your body continues to draw from muscle.
There is no such thing as losing weight fast. It will take 3 to 6 months (or more depending on the amount of weight loss needed),to lose a significant amount of weight. The good news is that once you have lost the weight, you should not gain it back because you will have learned about the food you eat.
Yes, you have heard it before and you are now going to hear it again - exercise! Even a small amount of exercise (1/2 hour per day, 3 days per week) will greatly accelerate weight control.
If you feel like having a snack or something sweet, have it. Your body is telling you it needs something. Of coarse, it would be better to eat a piece of fruit rather than a candy bar. However, either is preferable to over-eating at your next meal or agonizing over the decision to indulge the urge.

The Highway to Health - Bumped Heads

The Highway to Health - Bumped Heads
 by: Tony Howarth

I recently had a reader send me this comment:
"As a full-time dad I have to deal with just about every minor illness my two children pickup, everything from a bump on the head to chicken pox. I found the Highway to Health ebook very useful and it's one of the first things I reach for when something goes wrong!"
Mr John Bradbury
United Kingdom
It got me thinking - although the Highway to Health does cover headaches, perhaps going into a little more detail about 'bumps on the head' would be useful. So here we go...
There are two main types of head injury - concussion and compression.
*Concussion* is the commonest: It's when your brain gets 'shaken' inside your head. Like anything, it gets a little bruising. Like any bruise it heals with time. It can be caused by all sorts of things: Kids banging heads, perhaps playing sport. A child recently ran in to a coffee table and got concussion. Falling off things, running into things, tripping over... It's common and not too serious. You might feel a bit shaken up at first, might even pass out for a few moments, but not for long. You could feel dizzy or confused as well. You'll have a headache - but you knew that, right? You'll probably get a bruise or bump on the outside too. You might feel or be sick, but this will pass. Your vision might get blurred, but this passes.
> Sit down and take it easy.
> Put a cold compress (e.g. wet sponge) on the bump.
> Try not to worry - or if it's a child, try to reassure and comfort them.
> Five to ten minutes later, you should be feeling a whole lot better. The headache won't have gone yet, but it will settle. You might still feel sick, but everything else should have cleared.
> Now you can take whatever pain relief you'd usually have for the headache (and see http://www.thehighwaytohealth.com/ for a whole chapter on relieving headaches).
> Take it easy for the next three days.
> Keep a watch out for the signs & symptoms below (and have someone else watch out for you too).
> You'll soon be wondering what the fuss was about!
*Compression* is the other type of head injury: Just like anything that gets injured, your brain can swell. This is bad news - it's trapped inside your skull and has nowhere to swell to. So you get a build-up of pressure on your brain, which causes problems. It is usually caused by something a bit more severe than a bump on the head more like a bat over the head, or a bigger fall, or a traffic accident. This often starts out like concussion, but doesn't get better in a few minutes. That feeling of sickness gets worse, and you start to be sick a lot more often. The headache just gets worse, even when you've treated it. The dizziness or confusion will get worse, and you might pass out for a lot longer. You might have a fit or convulsion. Your vision might blur and keep getting worse.
>> You need the hospital - and quickly!
>> Anyone who has these symptoms goes straight to hospital.
>> Even if it started out as concussion, this can take up to 72 hours to develop. (It's commonest within the first four hours.)

Relieving Stress with Exercise... and Losing Body Fat in the Process!

Relieving Stress with Exercise... and Losing Body Fat in the Process!
 by: Jamie Clark

Feeling stressed out lately? Don't worry, there is a simple and incredibly effective solution -- one that will help you lose weight in more ways than you might think!
Relieving Stress with Exercise
Research has proven that relieving stress with exercise is one of the best ways to improve your overall health. Regular exercise provides an amazing array of anti-stress benefits to the human body -- including reduced muscle tension, improved cardiovascular functioning, increased blood oxygen levels, and reduced cholesterol and triglyceride levels, just to name a few.
Relieving stress with exercise also, of course, burns calories and helps to reduce body fat. Since most other anti-stress 'remedies' (especially pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol, and overeating) cause you to gain weight it's obvious that exercise is the best option.
Control Cortisol, Lose Weight
But, besides burning calories, there's another reason relieving stress with exercise helps you to reduce body fat. Exercise produces chemicals that help to lower cortisol production. Cortisol is a "stress hormone" that has gotten a lot of press lately because many new diet products claim to block it.
While the effectiveness of these products has yet to be proven, there is little doubt that controlling cortisol levels is a very important factor in weight loss and long-term weight control -- not to mention optimal health and fitness. Relieving stress with exercise is an absolutely fool-proof way to lower cortisol in the body.
Elevated cortisol levels are fully or partially responsible for everything from sugar and carb cravings to overeating to low energy levels... and more. Experts also believe that high cortisol production increases the amount of "toxic fat" stored on your body -- this is the abdominal fat that may trigger cardiovascular disease and inflammation-related health problems.
Summary
Relieving stress with exercise is, without a doubt, the best way to deal with your physical and mental tension. Not only will regular exercise reduce stress levels, it will also help you control how much cortisol your body produces. This, in turn, will help you to avoid food cravings, reduce dangerous abdominal fat, and basically feel much better. So, next time you feel stressed out, get up, get out, and start relieving stress with exercise!

The Omega Zone Diet and Fish Oil

The Omega Zone Diet and Fish Oil
 by: Iulia Pascanu

Is high-dose fish oil the magic pill? Dr. Barry Sears claims that Zone diet, combined with daily supplements of high-dose fish oil ("pharmaceutical grade"), antioxidants and vitamins is the passport to a long, healthy and successful life.
The Omega Zone Diet and specialists' opinion
"Omega RX Zone - The Miracle of High-dose Fish Oil" is considered the best contribution that Dr. Barry Sears has yet made to a healthy diet. The benefits of fish oil are well-known. Species such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna and salmon are rich in two kinds of Omega 3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids have had proven beneficial effects in complaints such as arrhythmia, high triglyceride levels, atherosclerotic plaque and high blood pressure.
The recommendations of the American Heart Association meet Dr. Sears' up to a point
Both the AHA and Dr. Sears recognise the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids.
Both parties tell us that fish is nowadays contaminated with various toxins like mercury, DDT or other harmful substances. See the AHA special report
People with a high risk of coronary heart disease or of high-level trigliceride cannot obtain enough Omega 3 fatty acids from dietary fish. They may therefore need to supplement their diet with pharmaceutical fish oil.
Nevertheless, opinions vary on some points.
High doses of fish oil are good for health, but the doses Dr. Sears recommends are much higher than those which AHA considers to be safe.
Dr. Sears warns us to pay attention to what we buy. This is pharmaceutical fish oil preliminarily tested by International Fish Oil Standards program (IFOS). The AHA's lab studies certified that all brands of pharmaceutical fish oil, even the cheapest, were free from toxins, at the moment of testing. But some of them did not meet the doses advertised on the label.
Dr. Sears prescribes fish oil capsules for healthy people. The AHA does not.
Dr. Sears claims that his fish oil supplements, Omega RX ZoneTM, will prevent and help cure heart and brain diseases. THey will also maintain healthy kidneys, immune system, joint movement, maintain cholesterol safe levels, stamina, strength, mood and general well-being. The American Food and Drug Administration did not evaluate any of these statements;

All About the Penis

All About the Penis
 by: Oneil Wilson

Can you really imagine humans evolving from dead bodies? Of course not, unless we are magical creatures who can be reborn from ashes or dust.
Reproduction is important to keep species alive. Plants, animals, microorganism and humans rely on reproduction to perpetuate their species. Without reproduction, humans would have been extinct millions of years ago. For this alone, we owe so much to our reproductive system.
The penis is the part of a male's body which varies the most from one person to another. Many boys worry that there is something wrong with them because they saw another boy's penis and it was a bit different to their own.
For the males, their penis is the most often used part of their genitalia. It is usually called the man's best friend. And there is a reason enough for that.
There is no other male genital organ that gets the same "publicity" as the penis. Ever wonder why it is the organ that has so many names? Man, and of course woman, is fascinated with this particular organ. Thus, the term "phallus worship" was created.
However, many people out there are still unenlightened about how this particular member of the male genitalia works. This article hopes to shed some light for those who are not scientifically familiar with their member.
The term "male genitalia" is usually used as a combined name for the penis and the testicles.
The penis is a tube-shaped appendage through which you pass urine and semen, and it has two general areas: the shaft, which is made of spongy tissue that fills with blood when you get an erection; and the glans, the penis' sensitive tip which is covered by foreskin in uncircumcised men.
The penis has three main functions: (1) for urination; (2) for sexuality and pleasure; (3) for reproduction and procreation.
Circumcision, the removal of foreskin from the glans used to be a very popular practice during the biblical times and the 1800s. Nowadays, it is usually done because of family traditions.
There was an increase in the rate of circumcision in the 1800's supposedly to try to stop masturbation. Which is of course, back then, is regarded as even more sinful than sex.
Health experts, medical practitioners and even their own parents advise young people to take good care of their member. An unhealthy and unhygienic member may entail a serious health condition like Balanoposthitis, Balanitis xerotica obliterans, and Erythroplasia of Queyrat.

What Is Mesothelioma?

What Is Mesothelioma?
 by: Angela Cambourn

Mesothelioma the medical name for cancer of the pleura (the lining of the lung and chest cavity) or cancer of the peritoneum (the lining of the abdomen). It is usually caused by prolonged or persistent exposure to asbestos.
Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until between twenty and fifty years after exposure, which explains why so many new cases of this form of cancer are coming to light now, even though the dangers of asbestos were realized long ago and measures taken to reduce the risk of the disease.
As with many forms of cancer, the mesothelioma tumor can spread rapidly, often infecting the opposite pleura, and continuing on to other internal organs. Symptoms include a shortness of breath, chest pains, coughing, and loss of weight.
Testing can be carried out initially by X-Ray, with a Thoric CT and open lung biopsy being used to confirm the findings of the early tests. If it is diagnosed early enough, the tumor can be surgically removed, and with follow-up chemotherapy and radiation treatment, full recovery is often possible.
However, in more advanced cases, cure is usually not possible. In such cases, chemotherapy and radiation treatment can be used alongside other pain relief treatments, to ease the symptoms. Where cure is not possible, the average survival time is between four and eighteen months, depending on the stage of the tumor and the general health of the patient.

NotOneOunce -- The Run-up To Thanksgiving

NotOneOunce -- The Run-up To Thanksgiving
 by: Will Clower, Ph.D.

Not One Ounce. The 8-Week Campaign to Survive the Holidays
-- by Will Clower, Ph.D., www.fatfallacy.com
November 12th
Eating preparations in the run up to Thanksgiving.
The turkey tsunami hits on the 3rd Thursday in November. It comes complete and replete with piles of potatoes, pies, sauces, stuffing, and all the rest. When you survey that mound of food, you realize that everything in there is healthy.
If you're eating all healthy foods, what's the problem?
The problem is volume, pure and simple. Eating a trough full of anything will make you overweight and unhealthy; and the typical Thanksgiving meal is normally served with a forklift. Name one thing on this planet that you cannot overconsume, to make it become bad for you.
Short term problem
After Thanksgiving, most people have to be rolled away from the table to recover on the couch for a solid hour of college football. Obviously, if the stretch receptors in the wall of your stomach are screaming at you stop, Stop, STOP, you have added far too many calories at that meal. In addition to the terrible feeling of being completely stuffed, you have simply added to your expanding horizons.
Long term problem
You stomach is completely adaptable, and responds to what you put in it. If you put it too much food, you are simply training your stomach to receive more and more food at the next sitting. This long term problem comes back at you down the road by increasing your tendency to overeat in the future. Just as you can train yourself to eat smaller over time, you can train yourself to eat and overeat gigantic portions.
Now what do we do?
Begin preparing for T-day now. Put away your large plates and replace them with the medium sized ones. When you do this, you will put less on your plate than you normally do, and you can begin to train your body to expect less food in the long term. Make that amount last through the entire meal (about 20 - 30 minutes).
When T-day does arrive, you will eat on your smaller plate, consume less food, and be the only groan-free member of your family on the post-dinner couch!

 by: Mike Long

There are many kinds of eczema, and too few people who can tell you how to cure them. Scientists are trying get a better handle on the causes of such eczema as hand and foot eczema, but they may still have years to go before they find a tested and sound way to prevent the condition.

Start your assault on your hand and foot eczema by avoiding the many things around your home that can irritate the condition.
Things that can irritate your skin include household cleansers, detergents, aftershave lotions, soap, gasoline, turpentine, and other solvents. Try to steer clear of these things that make your hand and foot eczema flare up.
Of course, it's also essential to wash your hands only when absolutely needed. Soaps and wetness can cause skin irritation. Dry your hands completely, as well, after you wash them.
The Importance of Wearing Gloves
Other ways to experience a temporary eczema cure involve all the methods under the sun to protect your hands. These include wearing gloves to protect the skin. Put on vinyl or plastic gloves for work it it requires you leaving your hands in water for long periods of time.
Wear gloves and shoes, too, when you think your hands will be exposed to anything that can irritate your skin and bring on hand and foot eczema.
Another potential temporary eczema cure are cotton gloves underneath plastic gloves, as well as cotton socks in plastic or leather shoes. The cotton can soak up sweat from your hands and feet. If even this cotton is getting drenched, then take frequent breaks from your activities or work.
Remove your gloves and shoes to prevent a buildup of sweat inside them. Don't forget your gloves when you go outside during the winter either. Cold air and low humidity are enemies of your skin and can easily bring on hand and foot eczema by drying out your skin.
Other Eczema Triggers You Should Think About
Besides cold and dry air, stress and other psychological factors can also be an eczema trigger. Learning how to manage your emotions can be an eczema cure all to itself. You may not be able to get at the root cause of eczema by cutting back on the stress in your life.
But controlling your emotions and avoiding stressful situations can be a potent way to reduce the frequency and the intensity of your eczema attacks. Your behavior, then, can be a powerful eczema cure until doctors come up with the ultimate one.

Exploring the "Should's": Is it Necessity, Desire, or Guilt?

Exploring the "Should's": Is it Necessity, Desire, or Guilt?
 by: Jennifer Koretsky

How many times a day do you find yourself using the word "should"? ADDers are full of "should's": I should do the dishes, I should clean out the fridge, I should see that movie, I should call my friend, etc. The word "should" can be very dangerous to an adult with ADD, because it often results in guilt.
In order to break through this and help you prioritize the things that you "should" do, try exploring your "should's" by asking yourself the following question:
Is this a necessity, a desire, or guilt? Here are some examples:
I should do my taxes.
Necessity: If you don't do your taxes, you can find your finances slipping out of control. You can end up owing the government penalty fees. And you will absolutely have undue stress. This "should" is a necessity.
I should buy that CD.
Desire: This is something that you want to make you happy. You like the music you hear, and therefore you want to own it. This "should" is a desire.
I should clean my house more often.
Guilt: If the "should" comes when you compare yourself to others, then guilt is probably involved. It often happens when we feel like we are not living up to the performance or expectations of others (or our perceived performance/expectations of others.) If you visit a friend's house and its neat and clean, you may falsely interpret this to mean that your friend cleans all the time. In reality, your friend may have spent hours cleaning her/his house before you arrived to make it look nice! If you are physically and mentally comfortable with the amount of time you spend cleaning your house, then cleaning more often is not a necessity, it's not a desire, its a "should" that is just useless guilt!
Try this exercise for a whole day. Every time you find yourself using the word "should," ask yourself if its a necessity, desire, or guilt. I promise that you'll feel a lot a better about all the things you think you "should" be doing!

The Miraculous Claims of the Zone Diet

The Miraculous Claims of the Zone Diet
 by: Iulia Pascanu

One way of recognizing a fad diet is said to be the promise of multiple miraculous effects upon health. And Zone diet promises a lot.
"Why is the Zone diet so controversial?"
"Beats me!"
Extract from an interview with Dr. Barry Sears, by Harper&Collins Publishers
Five cover promises
At first glance, Barry Sears' first published book "Enter The Zone" has the following main points: Lose weight permanently Reset your genetic code Prevent disease Achieve your maximum physical performance Enhance your mental productivity
These five statements should make us buy. I think I would buy if only one of them were true, point three, preventing disease.
How can a diet not be controversial when it says it can "prevent diseases"? But, to be fair, Dr Sears provides further details of his ambiguous statement somewhere between the covers of the bestseller. We find out that Zone diet can help to: prevent type II diabetes, as Zone diet is nothing more than permanent and accurate insulin control through food we ingest prevent cardiovascular diseases (cardiomyopathy, arthritis, artherosclerosis, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia) prevent or cure "mental diseases" such as depression and alcoholism restore energy in conditions such as CMS, PMS or even HIV infections prevent cancer development and make antibodies fight tumors with greater success.
I really want to believe Zone can be that magic recipe that can help me live a longer and healthier life, without too much effort. But I expected some scientific proof for all these promises. And what did I find instead? Some stories about people who successfully solved their problems by following Zone diet, and their everlasting gratitude to diet guru Barry Sears! I'm sorry, but I'm not buying that.
Of course, there are some good aspects of the Zone diet. It promotes healthy eating standards and gives some common-sense advice. Somewhere, on the publishing road (more precisely with "Omega RX Zone --- The miracle of high-dose fish oil"), Dr. Sears advises us not to make any radical change in our dietary program without consulting a trained physician.
But I think there are still many things that need to be proven in the Zone. If it really does work the way it promises, mankind should go beyond such problems as illness.

Top 17 Ways to Cut Your Prescription Drug Costs

Top 17 Ways to Cut Your Prescription Drug Costs
 by: Gary Nave

1. You May Qualify for a Free Drug program. There are over 1,100 drugs that are made by 100 manufacturers who have free drug programs. Most major drug companies provide free medications, but rarely, if ever publicize their programs. An estimated two billion dollars of free medication is given away annually. Larry's father has prostate cancer and takes Casodex every day, which costs $300 a month in the US, and $180 from Mexico. He sent his father's information to see if he qualified. He recently found out his father did qualify to receive the drug free. Larry just happened to see a small article buried inside the newspaper. He never knew these programs existed. A complete list of drugs and manufacturers' programs is available. For more information visit: http://www.institutedc.org
2. Get a Pharmacy Discount Card for Free. AdvanceRx offers a free discount card to anyone that saves 13%-25% and covers all drugs dispensed at a pharmacy. For details, call 1-800-ADVANCE (238-2623) or www.advancerx.com. There are five free discount cards for Senior citizens. The discount cards cover over 200 popular medications.
3. Save Up to 93% by Asking for a Generic Use generics whenever they are available. Both brand name and generic drugs contain the same active ingredients, are the same in strength and dosage, meet the same government quality control standards. According to Mark Erblat, Pharmacy Director and owner of Rx For You, cost savings on brand name vs. generic will vary from drug to drug and pharmacy to pharmacy but can be significant. For instance: Prozac brand 20mg, 100 tablets cost $280.19 and generic sells for $29.99 (Savings 89%) Vasotec brand 5mg, 100 tablets costs $103.59 and generic sells for $18.19 (Savings 82%) Zantac brand 150mg 100 tablets costs $173.39 and generic sells for $10.99 (Savings 93%) Zestril brand 10mg 100 tablets costs $96.29 and generic sells for $39.99 (Savings 58%)
4. Veterans Now Qualify for More Benefits. Recent laws have changed that grant veterans medical benefits for certain illnesses like diabetes and hypertension, provided the veteran is subject to qualifying conditions like agent orange exposure. See if you qualify for benefits by checking with the Veteran's Administration.
5. Cut Your Costs in Half… by Using a Pill Splitter. Most pharmacies should stock pill splitters. Sometimes, medications can be broken in half and save you 50%. The reason is because several pharmaceutical manufacturers price some of their medications the same for all strengths. Lipitor is essentially the same price for all strengths. It is possible to save as much as $100 on a one month supply of Lipitor just by getting the larger strength and cutting in half. Ask your pharmacist. This method may not be appropriate for all medications and could be dangerous if used with the wrong medication. Begin by asking your doctor or pharmacist if your medication is available in a dose double your normal dosage (ex, if you usually take a 20 mg. pill, is a 40 mg. pill available?). If it is, ask whether there would be any problems with splitting the tablets or capsules. Now, do a cost comparison between the two dosages. If the higher dose is less than double the cost for your regular dose then you will be saving money by having your doctor prescribe the higher dose and then splitting it. Cost savings is typically 32% to 50%. Viagra is another medication that lends itself to being split in half or quarters to save 50% to 75% depending upon the dosage required. The average Viagra user who uses two doses per week can save over $400.00 per year. This method is not appropriate for all medications. Check with your pharmacist. Some easily split medications include: Ambien, Aricept, Buspar, Effexor, Lipitor, Luvox, Paxil, Remeron, Risperidal, Seroquel, Serzone, Viagra, Zoloft, Zyprexa. (Ask your pharmacist about others)
6. Save by Buying a 90 vs. 30-Day Supply. Most pharmacies have higher savings on a longer days supply. In addition, when it comes to people who have insurance prescription coverage, there may be other savings by getting a larger day supply. For instance, if you have a $10 co-pay, the insurance company will let you get only a 30 days supply in general for that $10. A 90-day supply bought with out insurance may only cost you $18. This would be much cheaper than paying $10 per month ($30 for 90 days). It would also save you two trips to the pharmacy.
7. Ask for an Older Medication That is as Effective. Many pharmacists agree, that antibiotics are probably the most over prescribed, or incorrectly prescribed medications. Often, the physician will prescribe a newer antibiotic that has been promoted as more effective. What this really means is that it is considerably more expensive. The newer antibiotics are often no more effective than the older antibiotics. However, they are new and covered by patent protection. Therefore, the newer medication is more effective in ensuring a nice profit for the drug manufacturer for many years. Since many generics are made in the same factory as the brand name ones, make sure you ask your doctor for a generic antibiotic. A great generic broad- spectrum antibiotic costs 80% less than a new antibiotic. In dollars, it costs you $20 instead of $100.
8. Over-the-Counter Drugs May be as Effective as the Prescription Drug. Many doctors still prescribe Pepcid 20mg to their patients. A one-month supply of Pepcid 20mg cost approximately $60. Pepcid AC, over-the-counter in 10mg strength, taking double the dose costs approximately $23. Most prescription cold medications average $20 to $60 for a one month supply and contain the same decongestant that is available over-the-counter for less than $2.
9. Get Only a 7-day Supply of New Medication. If the doctor does not have samples, ask your pharmacist to give you only a one-week supply to try. It is a federal law that medicines can't be returned once they are dispensed. If you get a month's supply and can't tolerate the medicine, you have just lost that money.
10. Stop Using Drugs You No Longer Need. Review all your prescriptions with your doctor at each visit. You may be paying for some drugs you no longer need. Doctor run www.rxaminer.com provides a custom analysis of your medications to save you money. You can get a free, no obligation, Cost Screening to find out how much you can save. Also ask your pharmacist to review your medications in addition to your doctor. Here is why. A pharmacist's valuable services and knowledge are free. He may also find something your doctor missed. A lady developed a persistent cough after she had been taking a blood pressure medication for approximately 3 months. Her doctor treated her cough with antibiotics and cough syrup for 6 months. She asked her pharmacist about her cough lasting so long. The pharmacist found that a possible side effect of her new blood pressure medication was a persistent cough. Her doctor argued but changed her medicine and her cough stopped. The lady had spent over $750 in doctor's fees and medication just to treat the cough. A mother was giving her daughter antibiotics to treat a kidney infection. Her daughter consistently had a fever. This continued for several months. The baby's pediatrician prescribed several antibiotics unsuccessfully. After searching the literature, the pharmacist discovered that the antibiotic had a side effect of persistent low-grade fever. In the end, the mother had spent over $500 on doctor visits and prescription cost. Don't hesitate to ask your pharmacist questions, their advice is free and can often save you money and aggravation. Ask questions about side effects, and drug interactions.
11. Order Your Prescription Drugs by Phone. You can save 20%-50% by ordering prescription drugs over the phone. Bonus, you do not have to pick them up at the pharmacy. Make a list of your medications, including strength and number taken daily. Then list at least six pharmacies you are going to call. Don't forget about discount mail order sources too, several are listed at the end of this booklet. Then call and get prices, ask if this is their best price available. Compare the costs.
12. Pay Attention to the Quantity. Find out how much medication you really may need, and make sure your doctor doesn't order you more medicine than is necessary to treat your condition.
13. Ask Your Doctor for Samples at Every visit. They Usually Have Plenty.
14. Take Only Those Drugs You Really Need. When your doctor prescribes medication for you, understand exactly what it's meant to do and for how long. If you areprescribed two drugs for the same symptom, ask if you really need both.
15. Buy Home Test Kits. Kits for determining ovulation, pregnancy and colorectal cancer, can be purchased as home tests instead of paying twice as much for similar kits at your doctor's office.
16. Cross the Border. If you live close to either Canada or Mexico, you can buy some medications in either country for 75% off the U.S. price.
17. AARP Members are Eligible for Many Discounts, Including Mail-Order Pharmacy Discounts. Ask for an AARP discount.
If you have questions about these tips or your medication ask your doctor and pharmacist.

My High Blood Pressure

My High Blood Pressure
 by: Steve Alan

I have probably had high blood pressure for a long time. This is the story of how I found out.
In hindsight, I can identify many symptoms of high blood pressure, but I either ignored them or thought they were related to other things.
The major symptom I had was headaches. Most days I would either wake up with a headache or develop one. Some of them were real "head splitters" ... occasionally I would have to lie down to stop the nausea. I remember often working in front of my computer and trying very hard not to move my head to avoid feeling sharp pains.
Since being diagnosed with high blood pressure and starting medication, I have not had one headache (around nine months now). My headaches were definitely due to my high blood pressure, but back then I thought they were due to stress, or poor posture due to sitting at a computer all day ... or any number of things.
THE DIAGNOSIS
I had been told for years by doctors that my blood pressure was high, but that it was probably due to the "white coat"effect. Turns out it wasn't. I went to a new doctor, and as she took my blood pressure, she had a very worried look on her face.
My systolic blood pressure reading was over 200.
She told me to go to hospital immediately and made me promise I would not ignore her warning. At the time I did think she was over-reacting, and I pictured myself sitting in the hospital emergency waiting room for a couple of hours, waiting for a doctor to see me, giving me a couple of pills to take, and heading home.
The actual story was very different.
I arrived at emergency and was given the standard "patient detail" form to fill out. Before I was 1/3 of the way through, a nurse turned up to take my blood pressure. She also got a worried look on her face, and took me straight to one of the emergency beds. This is in a hospital system famous for making people wait hours in emergency.
I had doctors all over me ... injecting things, taking blood, scanning me and god knows what else.
My clearest memory of that day was suddenly feeling very light headed.
The doctor later told me that I "liked" a drug (I think it was hydralazine) he injected into me. I say "liked" because only a doctor could think I "liked" it. In about 30 seconds I went from feeling what I then considered normal, to being drenched in sweat, head spinning and throwing up my lunch. The nurses told me later that I was as white as a ghost.
I remember asking one of the emergency nurses if she thought I would be able to go home that night. She laughed.
I ended up spending 4 days in intensive care, and 6 days in the general hospital before they let me go home.
The quality of the care, the doctors and the nurses were all amazing. We have a free hospital system in Australia which sometimes gets a bad rap, but my experience was very positive.
MEDICATION
They never found a cause ... I just have high blood pressure. I take a fair bit of medication, and my blood pressure is now at normal levels.
My doctor told me to buy a blood pressure monitor and record my readings each day. Because I kept forgetting to take my readings, I wrote a software program to remind me. The software also charts the readings from my home monitor, and it is clear that my readings have been dropping over the last six months.
My readings are now around 110-120 over 70-80. Much better, but more importantly, I feel a lot better ... I had no idea that high blood pressure could make you feel so unwell.
If you also have high blood pressure I wish you well! If you have not seen a doctor about it, I highly recommend it ... don't leave it as late as I did, they can help you to feel a lot better!

Never Too Old!

Never Too Old!
 by: Louise Roach

At age 47, Martina Navratilova returned to Wimbledon and represented the United States at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
In September, seventy-three year old Ed Whitlock shattered his own world age class marathon record by completing a marathon in under 3 hours. Ed is the first 70+ human in history to attain this goal and he has done it twice!
September 26th was Jack LaLanne's birthday. The Godfather of Fitness turned 90! Still sporting his trademark jumpsuit, LaLanne is trim and strong. He's living proof that diet and exercise are the keys to a long, healthy life.
Why is exercise so important as we age? After 50, we begin to loose muscle mass at the rate of 6 percent every decade (about 5 pounds) and we gain 15 pounds of fat every ten years to replace it. Less muscle and more fat stores in the body, combined with inactivity and poor diet, can contribute to a wide array of degenerative conditions and disabilities, among them: osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis. Researchers speculate that Alzheimer's disease and certain cancers can also be linked to a lack of activity as we age.
The Stanford University Medical Center has conducted several long-term studies on active individuals over 50, particularly runners. They found that runners had a lower death rate and dramatically less disabilities compared to non-runners. They observed that running regularly was associated with an increase of HDL (good) cholesterol, plus a positive effect on muscle mass, as well as heart and lung health.
Other studies have concluded that regular exercise increases bone strength, controls weight gain, and keeps diabetes in check. Active seniors are better able to take care of themselves, perform common household tasks, and remain mentally sharp.
5 Parts of a Healthy-Aging Workout: Endurance Exercise: running, brisk walking, biking, aerobics, tennis, (a minimum recommendation of 25-30 minutes a day) Strength Training Exercise: weight lifting, uphill training (walking, running, hiking up an incline). Stretching Exercise: pre- and after workout stretches retain flexibility. Try yoga and pilates. Balance Exercise: use a balance ball for core exercises or stand on one foot without support. Meditative Exercise: reduce stress with yoga and tai chi.
5 Keys to Exercise Success: Dream big and set realistic goals. If you're not use to exercise don't try to run a marathon right away. Create a step-by-step plan to increase your stamina, strength and stability. Too much, too soon can end up causing injuries. Gradually work up to your dream achievement, such as participating in the Senior Olympics or climbing Pikes Peak. Exercise daily. Create your own special time for exercise every day. Whether it's a morning jog through the neighborhood, a mid-day walk with the dog or an afternoon swim at your local gym, daily exercise is much more effective at reaping healthy benefits than the "weekend warrior" approach. Exports recommend 25-30 minutes of moderate to strenuous exercise every day just to maintain your current weight. If you are trying to loose weight, extend your workout time to 60 minutes. Be aware of your body. If you feel soreness or a slight achy feeling in your muscles, that's OK. Your body is responding to a good workout. Use ice therapy to ease small aches and pains, and to reduce inflammation. A few 20-minute sessions with a cold pack and you should be ready for your next daily workout. Never use heat on stressed or strained muscles, as it will increase pain and swelling, slowing recovery time. Heat is appropriate to relax tight muscles. If you experience serious problems such as extreme pain, fainting, numbness in arms or legs, or chest pain, seek medical attention immediately. Stay well hydrated. Always a consideration for any athlete, dehydration can pose a serious problem in older athletes as aging bodies contain less body water. Sweating and exposure to heat can easily deplete the body of fluids. Drink plenty of liquids before, during and after your workout. Be a health leader! Encourage others through example and participation. Be positive and motivated. An enthusiastic attitude is contagious! It will also keep you going running through puddles on a rainy day; surviving aching legs on a downhill descent; or arriving at the finish line of your first race!
Keep in mind the words of 90-year old Jack LaLanne, "I work at living, not dying".

Vitamin A . The Glow-in-the-dark Vitamin

Vitamin A – The Glow-in-the-dark Vitamin
 by: David Leonhardt

The ancient Egyptians had a cure for "night blindness". They fed the patient lots and lots of liver. Perhaps they thought they were appeasing the Gods of sight. In 1930, the first fat-soluble vitamin was discovered - vitamin A - which, it turns out, does indeed appease the Gods of sight.
Vitamin A is best known for improving eyesight, particularly at night, which is one of two reasons we call it the glow-in-the-dark vitamin. But the eyes are not the only part of your body grateful for your generous consumption of vitamin A.
Your skin also benefits. And your hair. And mucous membranes. And nails. In fact, almost any surface lining your body can find.
Your immune system benefits, too, giving you added resources to ward off infections. Bones and teeth are strengthened with proper amounts of vitamin A, and even the risk of some cancers can be reduced with vitamin A.
And there are more confirmed and suspected benefits.
The other reason we call Vitamin A the glow-in-the-dark vitamin is because it is best known as the bright orange color in so many foods we enjoy. Like pumpkins, pumpkin pie and my favorite: pumpkin cheesecake ( see my recipe at http://www.thehappyguy.com/pumpkin-cheesecake-recipe.html ). And, of course, carrots, squash, peaches, apricots, cantaloupe, mangoes, sweet potatoes and the rest of the orange-spangled veggie gang.
But again, vitamin A is much more than meets the eye, because it is not actually vitamin A that turns the fruit and vegetables orange, but a precursor to vitamin A called beta carotene. Beta carotene does not become vitamin A until your body processes it.
And vitamin A is just as likely, if not more so, to come from protein sources such as most dairy products, egg yolks and some fish. And the queen of all vitamin A sources is liver, that ancient Egyptian God of sight. Calves liver. Chicken liver. Pork liver. Any liver you can sink your teeth into.
The vitamin A in protein sources is real vitamin A, no processing required.
Other great sources of vitamin A are dark green vegetables, such as Swiss chard, broccoli, spinach and beet greens.
As important as it is to glow with vitamin A, don't glow too brightly. An overdose can be harmful to bones and skin, causing weakness and brittleness, even leading to fatigue and vomiting.
It is advisable not to take a vitamin A supplement except under the supervision of a physician. In most cases, it is much better to take a liquid multivitamin such as Essential Nectar in recommended daily doses. There is very little chance of getting an overdose that way.
Also, increase your intake of beta carotene sources to avoid an overdose. Whereas your body absorbs all the vitamin A it takes in directly, it converts only the beta carotene it needs (talk about customization!).
So get glowing and get the vitamin A you need.

6 Ways to Eat More Healthfully

6 Ways to Eat More Healthfully
 by: Kim Beardsmore

With so much 'diet advice' around today it is little wonder if you feel somewhat confused. Whether you are wanting to lose weight, maintain your weight or help your family eat more healthfully....these six, simple ideas will help you to eat more heathfully.
1 Stay away from the inside aisles
When you grocery shop, fill up your trolley from the aisles around the outside the perimeter of the store. This is where the fresh fruit, vegetables and fresh foods are kept.
2 Eat small amounts frequently
Don't allow yourself to get hungry. Keep your appetite in control with smaller meals and healthy snacks in between.
3 Keep close to nature
Fresh is best and generally much better for you than pre-packaged. For example, a fresh potato baked in its jacket is more healthy than pre-packaged "potato au gratin".
4 Experiment and use spices
Get used to cooking with a wide variety of spices. It's possible to get fabulous flavor with spices without adding high calorie fats and oils.
5 Read "fat free" labels carefully
Many "fat free" items contain additional carbohydrates in the form of sugar or fructose to compensate for reduced flavor and can do more to add to your weight than the "full strength" product.
6 Use low fat dairy products
For adults, much healthier as low fat dairy products have the nutrients without the extra fat.

Cannot Lose Those Extra Pounds Of Weight??

Cannot Lose Those Extra Pounds Of Weight??
 by: AyurvedicCure.com

Intake of fats and carbohydrates in excess results in obesity. Lack of exercise, physical work also helps in accumulation of fat in the body. In Ayurveda this condition is called medoroga. The fat in the body is primarily drawn from the oils, ghees, and other fatty substances consumed through food and drink. Chocolates, wafers, sweets, remember excessive fat may also impair the function of the vital organs like heart, liver, joints and the kidneys. Obesity may also cause diabetes, asthma, arthritis, high blood pressure.
Walking is the best exercise to begin with.
Honey is an excellent home remedy for obesity.
Make a mixture of two teaspoon of lime juice, one teaspoon of honey , in a glass of water, add some pepper to it & have it regularly.
Drink a glass of boiled water daily after every meal.
Spices like ginger, cinnamon, black pepper etc. are good for loosing weight. Drink ginger tea 2-3 times a day.
Shudh Guggulu is very beneficial for curing this ailment. It helps to regulate the lipid metabolism. Take a teaspoon of guggul with ginger and honey, twice a day.
Two teaspoon of lim e juice added to water also helps in loosing weight. Have it frequently.
Mint is very beneficial in losing weight. Have some salads, vegetables with it.
Trifla , a herbal combination of amalaki, bibbitaki, and haritaki is good for loosing weight.

Is Zone Diet a Fad?

Is Zone Diet a Fad?
 by: Iulia Pascanu

Health Castle offers "Ten signs of a fad diet":
1. It promises massive weight loss (1 - 2 lbs per week)
Dr. Barry Sears is careful when he declares a standard weight loss on Zone diet. He considers that anything between 1 to 1,5 lbs per week is satisfactory. "It will be impossible to lose more than one to one point five pounds of fat per week. Anything over that is loss of retained water", says Sears himself on his daily "Ask Dr. Sears" column at DrSears.com. FAD.
2. It does not suggest you that you consult with a registered dietician or nutritionist
"Any change in diet (for better or worse) will affect the metabolism of the drug(s) you are taking. Always consult with a physician before starting the Zone Diet or any other dietary plan", says Dr. Sears in various interviews and discussion lists. Not FAD.
3. It encourages you to eliminate certain food groups (e.g. "low carb diets", "low fat diets")
This is untrue for the Zone diet. Dr. Sears says: "No food is forbidden in the Zone." Zone diet considers "unfavourable" mostly high glycemic foods and foods high in saturated fats. Not FAD.
4. It offers rigid menus
Difficult-to-prepare meals, plenty of measuring and counting, rules that are easy to misinterpret, Zone subscribes to that. FAD
5. It neglects active living or lifestyle changes
The Zone diet has impressive instrumentary and regulation for dining out or for fast food. On the other hand, there's no problem if you step out of the Zone now and then. Here are some soothing phrases from Dr. Sears himself: "The Zone diet is free of guilt" or "The Zone is just one meal away". I'm quite UNDECIDED about this one. It is clear the man has taken some time to think about it.
6. It harshly limitates the daily calorie intake
Some dieticians claim that the Zone diet limits the daily calorie intake to somewhere around 800. I used the calculator at DrSears.com to check this (I am a 100 pound woman by the way) and my daily calorie intake resulted around 1100 kcal. I'm not pleased with it, as I don't plan to spend my days in permanent hibernation, or lose any of my precious, hard-gained pounds... FAD.
7. It contradicts what most trusted health profesionals say
The Zone diet argues against the USDA food pyramid, which recommends grains and starches up to five servings per day. This is its most high-profile argument. The American Heart Association considers Zone "a fad diet". FAD
8. It depends on special products, supplements and treatments
One Zone bar (or shake) is $2.50. A 45-day supply bottle of Omega Rx concentrated fish oil is $78.15. The figure for the Zone books ranges between $6 and $26 (at the Zone Labs online shop); FAD.
9. It makes miraculous claims
The Zone will help you to: lose up to 1.5 lbs body fat per week improve your insulin level (which should particulary be ... "not too high not too low") fight against "modern diseases" such as type II diabetes and blood vessel affections fight against "mental illnesses" such as depresion and alcoholism prevent "certain" cancers "restore energy", says Dr. Sears in his book, Enter the Zone, "especially if you have CMS, PMS or even HIV infection" and... The Zone itself is defined as a state of well-being in which you do not experience hunger, fatigue or moodiness. Your body and mind function sharply at their "peak level".
The Zone is a FAD diet in this respect.
10. It relies on testimonials and success stories rather than scientific proof
Dr. Sears says "Let me be a little more specific about the rewards you'll reap from staying in the Zone" ("Enter the Zone", p. 4). A few paragraphs later he tells the happy stories of Steve Courson (a famous National Football League player in the late 1970's), his teammate John Corb and Dr. Chris Kyriazis, head of European Marketing for IBM. I believe these examples are not specific but unusual. Moreover, Dr. Sears' Zone diet is mistrusted by most dieticians and nutritionists as so far he has not published any relevant, professional research to sustain his theory. FAD again.
