Dietary Guidelines Show Need For Supplements

Dietary Guidelines Show Need For Supplements
 by: Loren Baker

The 2005 Dietary Guidelines emphasize getting all of your nutrients from conventional foods, if possible, but also flag the need for some supplemental nutrients."The fact is that many people do not get all the nutrients they need from diet alone, and there are clear health benefits from getting the full recommended amounts of all vitamins and minerals. A daily multivitamin can go a long way toward filling the gaps, and an additional supplement providing more calcium and vitamin D is advisable for most people," said Annette Dickinson, Ph.D., president of the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), one of the dietary supplement industry’s leading trade associations.
"Additionally, supplements of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may be valuable for people who don’t eat at least two fish meals each week." According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines, children and adolescents as well as adults often fall short in vitamin E, adults frequently fail to get enough vitamin C, people over age 50 should get the supplemental form of vitamin B-12, women of childbearing age need synthetic folic acid (a B vitamin), and lots of people need extra vitamin D. According to Dr. Dickinson, "The good news is that all of these supplemental nutrients can be consumed conveniently and inexpensively in the form of a daily multivitamin, for less than a dime a day."
In addition, the Dietary Guidelines point out that calcium is a critical nutrient that is in short supply for practically everybody—children, teens, and adults. A multivitamin with minerals will provide some extra calcium, but to get the full amount of calcium that is recommended, people will need to use a separate supplement containing calcium (preferably with vitamin D) or consume lots of dairy products or calcium-fortified foods. While conventional foods and fortified foods and supplements are all effective ways to obtain additional nutrients, cost and calories are also factors to consider. The cost of 1,000 mg of calcium can range from 18 cents a day to $1.38 a day, depending on whether a person uses a calcium tablet, soft calcium chews, lowfat milk, a breakfast cereal with added calcium, or calcium-fortified orange juice (listed from lowest to highest cost). The number of calories that will come along with that amount of calcium ranges from negligible to over 300.
"Multivitamins and calcium supplements can provide consumers with a major boost in their attempts to meet their nutrient needs while controlling cost and avoiding excess calories," said Dr. Dickinson. "The 2005 Dietary Guidelines flag important nutrient shortfalls, and ideally the Food Guide Pyramid (when it comes out) should feature a flag on top to remind people to use appropriate supplements in addition to improving their diets and adopting a healthier lifestyle. Supplements can be an integral part of an optimal diet and should always be viewed in the context of a healthy lifestyle."
See below for a summary of the Dietary Guidelines comments on nutrient shortfalls. The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), founded in 1973, is a Washington, D.C.-based trade association representing dietary supplement industry ingredient suppliers and manufacturers. CRN members adhere to a strong code of ethics, comply with dosage limits and manufacture dietary supplements to high quality standards under good manufacturing practices. For more information on CRN, visit http://www.crnusa.org.
2005 Dietary Guidelines: Nutrient Shortfalls in the General Population Shortfalls for adults: calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids (as a source of vitamin A) Shortfalls for children and adolescents: calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E 2005 Dietary Guidelines: Recommendations for Special Needs Vitamin B-12 for People Over 50 Although a substantial proportion of individuals over age 50 have reduced ability to absorb naturally occurring vitamin B-12, they are able to absorb the crystalline form. Thus, all individuals over the age of 50 should be encouraged to meet their Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA, 2.4 mcg/day) for vitamin B-12 by eating foods fortified with vitamin B-12 such as fortified cereals, or by taking the crystalline form of vitamin B-12 supplements.
Iron for Women Based on blood values, substantial numbers of adolescent females and women of childbearing age are iron deficient. Thus, these groups should eat foods high in heme-iron (e.g., meats) or iron-fortified foods with an enhancer of iron absorption, such as foods rich in vitamin C (e.g., orange juice). Folic Acid for Women of Childbearing Age Since folic acid reduces the risk of the neural tube defects, spina bifida and anencephaly, a daily intake of 400 mcg/day of synthetic folic acid (from fortified foods or supplements in addition to food forms of folate from a varied diet) is recommended for women of childbearing age who may become pregnant. Pregnant women should consume 600 mcg/day of synthetic folic acid (from fortified foods or supplements) in addition to food forms of folate from a varied diet. Vitamin D for the Elderly, People with Dark Skin, and People Who Avoid the Sun Adequate vitamin D status, which depends on dietary intake and cutaneous synthesis [synthesis in skin exposed to sunlight], is important for optimal calcium absorption, and it can reduce the risk for bone loss. The elderly and individuals with dark skin (because the ability to synthesize vitamin D from exposure to sunlight varies with degree of skin pigmentation) and people who get very little exposure to sunlight (e.g., housebound individuals) may need as much as 1,000 International Units per day to achieve protective blood levels of the vitamin.
Fish, EPA, and DHA Evidence suggests that consuming approximately two servings of fish per week (about 8 ounces total) may reduce the risk of mortality from coronary heart disease and that consuming EPA and DHA (two long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish) may reduce the risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease in people who have already experienced a cardiac event.

Bleeding Gums

Bleeding Gums
 by: Scott Baker

Bleeding gums can be one sign of periodontal disease, gingivitis, or other serious problems. Other symptoms of poor dental health may include persistent bad breath, toothache, and receding gums. Untreated, bleeding gums and gum disease can lead to serious medical problems. Good oral hygiene, including thorough brushing and the removal of plaque and tartar from the teeth, is crucial. However, brushing alone is not enough to stop bleeding gums. Total oral hygiene requires a comprehensive plan to care for the entire mouth, including the teeth and gums, but also including all of the tissue inside the mouth.
Bleeding gums may indicate other medical problems. The Academy of General Dentistry points out that bleeding gums and problems that occur in the mouth may point to other serious conditions: * Bad breath and bleeding gums are a strong indicator of diabetes.
Gum disease can complicate a heart condition.
A sore and painful jaw is a clue for a potential heart attack.
Dental x-rays may show the first signs of osteoporosis
Bleeding gums may also be an indication of canker sores. Canker sores are caused by a virus. Bleeding gums may occur when canker sores become irritated. Bleeding gums may also be caused by age. As we age, many people find that their gums begin to recede, making them literally "long in the tooth." Untreated, receding gums can lead to tooth loss. Your dentist can determine whether your bleeding gums are caused by canker sores, receding gums, periodontal infection or periodontal disease, or other causes. An accurate diagnosis to determine why you have bleeding gums is an important part of choosing the appropriate course of treatment.
Help for Bleeding gums
Bleeding gums and other oral health problems are treatable if they are caught early and taken care of before the condition gets out of hand. Millions of Americans neglect to take care of their gums, teeth and mouth, often with tragic results. If you have a toothache, canker sore, receding gums, or excessive plaque or tartar, then you should take steps to correct the problem. Bleeding gums are unhealthy and unattractive. You don't have to live with bleeding gums. You can learn more about bleeding gums, gum disease and possible solutions by visiting: http://stopgumdisease.here.ws

An Introduction to Gambling Treatments

An Introduction to Gambling Treatments
 by: Ryan S. Bombard

Gambling is a form of entertainment for many people, but in some cases gambling can become an addiction leading to financial problems, relationship stress, and even attempted suicide. It is estimated that 6 percent of north america's population will have a gambling problem sometime in there life. Gambling addiction is a serious problem. Pathological addictions to gambling are more common in men then women or specific ethnic groups. Gambling can create a rush when you lose and win, and sometimes the user is unable to control their impulses to gamble. This is when it becomes a problem. There are different degrees of gambling addiction. All of which are treated differently, depending on the specific needs of the addict.
Signs of gambling addictions include, but are not limited to: Constantly thinking/talking about and, or, preparing for gambling sessions, gambling during work or when you are expected at home, getting into debt from gambling and lying to borrow money. Using illegal means to finance gambling and neglecting family or other personal responsibilities. Feeling a need to gamble to relieve stress and or 'escape reality'. Of course, there are also many more signs that could point towards a problem gamble, though gambling addiction is usually blatently obvious.
Treatment programs can range, and are specifically designed according to the addicts needs. Usually the most sucessful therapies combine both professional counselling and user support groups. Medication can be used to combat mood swings, depression and anxiety that addict' may experience during withdrawl. Pyscho and cognitive behaviour therapy is also used, to replace the negative effects of gambling with positive ones, in turn promoting a healthy and positive attitude towards gambling. Group therapy is also good place for user support and feed back.

An Introduction to Detox Diets

An Introduction to Detox Diets
 by: Ryan S. Bombard

Detoxifying the body has become an apparent key preventetive measure to all kind's of health problems. Since most of us are busy, and unable or unwilling to maintain a strict diet in order to completely eliminate all the toxins from our bodie. We have chemicals building up in our bodiess day after day. Since these chemicals are not harmful in small amounts, only in larger accumulated amounts, we don't notice side effects until we are much older. A proper, even if occasional, detox diet is necessary to relieve our bodies of harmful toxins and chemicals, and maintain a healthy, normal, and long-lived life.
The main idea of a detox diet is to eliminate nearly all foods and restrict the body to only water and veggetables for a few days, usually around 5 or 6 days is adequate. Most detox diets then allow for a slow re-introduction of other foods, gradually. The diets generally restrict foods from your diet that are said to have harmful toxins. Along with this a detox diet should then flush the existing toxins out of the body. A detox diet essentially gives the liver and other organ's a chance to catch up and remove all the toxins. This is done through our sweat, feces, and urine. Our bodies simply cannot cope with the normal day to day ingestion of chemicals. Most these chemicals come from foods, as mentioned before, but also have a wide variety of other sources. Although we do not know what foods are the cause of it all, we do know that pesticides, heavy metals, such as mercury and lead, and the chemicals in ciggerttes and the air we breath, all enter our bodys via our lungs or stomach and can cause an excessive build up. These chemicals in small amounts are harmless, its the day after day ingestion and build up of them which can lead to degenerative diseases.
One common detox diet is the combination of nothing but fruits and water for a given period. The promotion of chemicals being matabilized by our bodies can be helped with certain vitamins, herbs and supplements. Some supplements will help the mobilization of toxin's in our fat and other toxin deposit's located throughout the body. Since our bodies rid themselves of chemicals through sweat, sauna therapies can also provide a great benefit. There are many other diet's and detox therapies, these are just a few common methods. Regular body detoxification is a good preventative action and promotes a healthier present and future!

Introduction to Cocaine Addiction

Introduction to Cocaine Addiction
 by: Ryan S. Bombard

Coke, more commonly known as cocaine is a highly addictive stimulant which instantly affects the brain after introducing it to the body. The effects of this drug are extremely pleasurable and give a false sense of euphria. Like caffiene, coke makes the user feel awake, and energized. Cocaine addict's usually experience a sense of well being and feel 'powerful', combined with restlessness and anxiety. When the effects of cocaine wear off the user will 'crash', become depressed, and crave another 'hit' or 'wack'. Cocaine addiction is hard to beat, because of the great length's the user will go to get the drug. Some will even neglect his job, familey and loved ones, in order to satisfy there craving for cocaine. This is one of the reasons why cocaine addiction is considered so harsh. It effects the user as well as everyone around him or her.
Signs of cocaine abuse include: change in mood, appitite and sleep cycles, depression, absence at work and home, running/ sniffly nose, new group of friends and a drop in school grades. Loss of interest in hobbys and other activities are also common signs of cocaine usage. Teenagers may also have a frequent need for money, without a good reason. Confronting the suspected user is the best solution. Cocaine addiction's should not go overlooked and should be treated ASAP. Long term effects of cocaine include: irritability, mood swings, restlessness, paranoya, possible auditory hallucinations and the number one long-term effect is addiction to the substance itself.
Many treatments have been found to be have great affects on treating cocaine addiction. It is important when selecting treatment methods, to match the treatment to the individual's needs. The main idea is to get the cocaine abuser to stop the use of the drug and help them maintain a positive outlook throughout the withdrawal. Rewards for positive behaviour and attitude are sometimes given and staying cocaine free becomes easier for the users in time. Residential programs focus on re-socialization, group therapy, and team work to assist an addict through withdrawal. It is very important, regardless of the treatment, is moral support from loved ones. Cocaine addiction is not easy to beat, but it's not impossible, with help and the proper treatment, cocaine addiction can be overcome.

Has Anxiety Taken Over Your Life?

Has Anxiety Taken Over Your Life?
 by: Nansia Ressi

Anxiety is the leading clinically diagnosable mental health disorder – it affects millions of people. Everyone experiences a little anxiety in life. It can be necessary and a motivator to help us make plans and perform well. However, anxiety disrupts the everyday life of millions of people. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, anxiety disorder is the most common mental health problem in the United States. Almost 19 million Americans (aged 18 to 54) suffer from some anxiety disorder each year, according to a analysis by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
Fear is generally the basis for anxiety disorders. All of us have felt its tingle before we do something that makes us nervous, such as making a public speech or going out on a first date. When that feeling becomes more constant and starts to invade our daily lives, then it has become a disorder and it's time to get some help.
One of the best known forms of anxiety disorders is a Panic attack. During a Panic attach, the person is suffering from a panic attack experiences a racing heart with pain, or a heaviness in the chest with shortness of breath. Generalized anxiety disorder is another common form, characterized by a persistent and excessive worrying which occurs longer than six months and is accompanied by symptoms like insomnia, muscle tension, poor concentration, and irritability. Those suffering from general anxiety usually don't experience panic attacks, but it can still be incapacitating. The endless anxiety reduces energy, causes disinterest in life and frequent mood swings. Other forms of anxiety disorders include social anxiety, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorders.
Anxiety disorder can be complicated to treat; the functions of the brain simply aren't fully understood. Medical researchers don't understand why some people's imbedded fear response goes into overdrive. There are at least five different neurotransmitters that seem to be disturbed in various anxiety disorders, and all of them can be treated by anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications.
Thankfully there are a number of options for treating and even curing anxiety disorders. Western medicine relies on medications and psychotherapy. Some people see two practitioners: a psychologist to counsel with, and a psychiatrist for prescription medication. This combination of treatments can be quite effective. Tranquilizers from the class called "benzodiazepines" are often prescribed and often work quite well. Some of these brand names are Xanax, Valium, and Ativan and they help those suffering from panic and anxiety. Most of these aren't to be used for the long-term. Anti-depressants have proven more effective for those with acute anxiety disorders. The best ones seem to be the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) s. Some of these are Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil.
Alternative health care providers view anxiety disorders from an entirely different perspective. Patients who seek alternative treatment (usually non-pharmaceutical) should be prepared to approach the healing process with patience and introspection. Another therapeutic option is Cognitive Therapy (CBT) which focuses on creating an understanding of the thought process that produces worry. It helps anxiety suffers focus on realistic thoughts rather than unrealistic worries. Other alternative therapies for anxiety include relaxation training, desensitization, breathing exercises, meditation, acupuncture, homeopathy and biofeedback. In addition, some people find bodywork such as yoga, massage, chiropractic adjustments or even a brisk walk to provide long-term relief.

Lose Weight And Keep It Off--A Remarkable New Way To Do It

Lose Weight And Keep It Off--A Remarkable New Way To Do It
 by: George Shears

The percentage of Americans who are overweight and obese is increasing very rapidly. "Overweight" is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) from 25.0 to 29.9 whereas a BMI of 30 or above is defined as "obese." According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 56% of the population was overweight during the reporting period from 1988 through 1994, and 23% was obese. During the period from 1999 through 2002, these percentages had increased to 65% and 30%, respectively.
So obesity has clearly reached epidemic proportions in the U.S., and the healthcare costs associated with it now rival those attributable to smoking. These costs were estimated to be $92.6 billion in 2002--9.1% of all health care costs--and they continue to escalate rapidly. Comparable costs associated with smoking were estimated to be between 6.5% and 14.4% in 2002. The Centers for Disease Control have announced that obesity could become the nation's leading cause of preventable deaths by 2005. According to a recent estimate, obesity accounts for approximately 280,000 deaths each year in the U.S.
This epidemic is not confined to adults but tragically is afflicting children as well. Childhood obesity increased from 5 percent in 1964 to 13 percent in 1994. Today, it is estimated to be about 20 percent--and rising.
Diseases for which obesity is a significant risk factor include: Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, cancer, gallstones, gout, osteoarthritis, and sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, pulmonary problems, reproductive problems in women, and depression.
In this era of skyrocketing healthcare costs, it's urgently clear, then, that more effective methods are needed for preventing and reversing this very major contributor to our escalating healthcare crisis.
The above data are especially astounding in the face of the fact that Americans are spending in excess of $50 billion annually on diet products. In view of the ongoing epidemic summarized above, this investment has obviously been highly unsuccessful. As has been pointed out in one study, for example, the price per pound lost in one well-known weight loss program amounts to $180!
Not only is there overwhelming evidence that diets don't work in the long run, but of even more concern is the strong evidence that they can actually contribute to further weight gain and decline in health. There is recent evidence, for example, that yo-yo dieting weakens the immune system by as much as 30%.
A search of the research literature on weight loss strongly supports the general conclusion that key lifestyle and dietary changes are absolutely necessary to long-term success. Here is a fairly comprehensive listing of these essential changes: Eat a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits. Boost protein intake to build and preserve lean muscle tissue. Use fiber-rich foods, which are more filling and promote health. Boost calcium and other minerals to help shed unwanted fat. Increase intake of omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids by eating fish, flax, and nuts. Eat only minimal amounts of "junk" carbs, containing sugar and white flour. Greatly reduce--or eliminate--saturated and trans fats that are loaded with harmful fatty acids. Reduce or eliminate alcohol. Reduce the amount of food eaten gradually to avoid the adverse effects of sudden dieting. Eat frequent, small snacks, instead of large meals, to maximize calories burned for energy. Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast to avoid difficulty in controlling appetite later in the day. Be sure to exercise for a half-hour, at least 3 times a week. Gradually boost exercise frequency and intensity for even greater effects. Practice stress reduction to reduce the over-production of cortisol, which promotes weight gain. Expose yourself to the sun for at least 15 minutes each day and get adequate sleep. Incorporate all of these changes into your lifestyle and maintain them persistently.
Some people, however, in spite of making these changes and maintaining them rigorously still experience limited success in losing excess weight and keeping it off.
Lucy Beale, a nationally-known author and weight loss consultant for nearly twenty years, addressed this issue in her recent newsletter:
"For years, I've watched some of my clients do seemingly everything 'right' to lose weight--eating 0-5, eating low-glycemic foods, exercise--and yet they don't lose pounds or inches. This situation is frustrating for me and certainly for them. I've been 'wishing and hoping' to find a fat-loss product that I could whole-heartedly recommend.
"When I couldn't find any viable products to recommend, I spoke with several alternative health practitioners about developing a natural weight-loss product that was: A) safe; B) effective; C) non-addictive; D) worked for most people; and E) provided long-term health benefits. But nothing ever came of our efforts. . .
"Then, in September 2004, a friend told me about the Nexagen Fat-Loss Patch. I've done my homework on the patch and my research indicates the patch is safe, effective, and health promoting. I was so excited that I asked some of my clients to try it out. They loved it. They were eating less, found it easier to eat 0-5, had fewer cravings, felt better emotionally, and even wanted to exercise. They lost inches and weight. Many were able to reduce the dosage of medications they were taking for such health conditions as asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, diabetes, and thyroid disorders. People who wear the patch for at least 3-6 months are experiencing satisfying results. . ."
The Fat Loss Patch that Lucy is referring to here is a unique new approach to assisting weight loss and maintenance. Unlike the vast majority of previous diet products containing ephedra, synephrine, or other harmful stimulants, this patent-pending transdermal patch employs Forslean, a patented derivative from an Asian herb, Coleus forskohlii, which has been used for centuries to treat cardiovascular disorders and other health problems. Recent research has now shown that it is also effective in burning fat, while preserving lean muscle, and in curbing food cravings. It also has the added health benefits of supporting thyroid functioning and and helping to reduce blood pressure.
Its mechanism of action in promoting fat burning in the body is also unlike that of all previous thermogenic, or fat-burning, products. The main active ingredient in Forslean activates a very important enzyme, Adenylate cyclase which is involved in the production of Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate (cAMP). This "second messenger," as it is called in the research literature, is indispensable to many important body functions. One of these is to help maintain a healthy body composition by burning fat while preserving lean body mass.
Combined with the dietary and lifestyle changes summarized above, the Fat Loss Patch is finally making it possible for nearly anyone to attain--and maintain--a healthy body weight.

Depressed? It.s Gotta All Be Our Parents. Fault!

Depressed? It's Gotta All Be Our Parents' Fault!
 by: Gene Simmons

A newspaper article from the Associated Press a while back reports that scientists say they've found a gene (CHRM2) that's linked to alcoholism and depression. An expert from another organization says that if these preliminary findings hold true that it will provide another "potential target for developing new drugs to treat depression and alcoholism".
Well, I'm excited now… Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm sure there are many, many people who came into this earthly existence so hard-wired with these tendencies that the proper drug or combination of drugs would be extremely beneficial. And common sense along with some basic observations over the years has shown that folks from alcoholic families tend to be alcoholic just as people from depressed families tend themselves to be depressed. Some of the reason of course, is genetics. We take the cards we're dealt and play them out the best we can.
However, you can about bet a nickel or two that not all of the 7.9 million alcoholic American adults nor the 18.8 million suffers from depression (stats from the article) will be able to honestly lay the blame for their affliction on their genetics. We all know that environmental influences - family and everything else we've ever experienced - play just as large a role in determining our lifestyles, thought patterns and belief systems. Permanently overcoming these types of influences though, generally requires behavioral modification, not just physiological intervention.
Unfortunately, over the past few years, the treatment of disorders such as "depression" has followed closely in the footsteps of weight loss. We humans have naturally tried to take the easiest possible path – the one which requires the least effort on our part. Take a pill, wear a gadget, and "poof" we're happy as skunks sucking eggs and skinny as a fence pole to boot.
We all should know that this isn't necessarily the way life really works. Sometimes we just gotta bust our behinds to change things around. Even some of the things that have been influenced by genetics can be successfully combated to a great extent through modifications of our thought patterns – and subsequently of course, our behavior.
A parting thought then I'll climb down off my soapbox. (That danged cardboard and Elmer's glue never has held up for very long anyway.) If you are one of world's adults who are burdened with alcoholism (or other addictions) or severe depression, please get professional help now. Connect with someone or a group of people who can help you learn why you are the way you are today. There are reasons that are specific to your personal situation that you need to know about so you can make the changes it takes to start to step away from your problem. And don't be surprised if some of these changes involve some potentially major modifications in your thought processes. It's just a logical part of the healing and personal betterment process. So just go for it! Now! There's a wonderful happy world waiting for you!

Acne and Green Tea

Acne and Green Tea
 by: Elaine Clay

Green tea is used by the Chinese as a traditional medicine to treat many ailments including acne and to improve general well-being. But does it provide an effective herbal alternative to modern medication?
The answer seems to be 'Yes'. There are only two herbal treatments that are known to be effective in treating acne and green tea is one of them.
In a recent study by Jennifer Gan-Wong, M.D. a green tea cream was trailed against a 4% benzoyl peroxide solution on people suffering with moderate to severe acne. The results from this research study showed that green tea was just as good in treating acne as the benzoyl peroxide.
But benzoyl peroxide dries out skin causing itching or allergic reactions. Unlike green tea that has the added advantages of natural anti-bacterial properties and antioxidants, particularly epigallocatechin gallate which is 200 times more powerful than vitamin E at fighting free radicals.
Green tea also helps to reduce inflammation, hormonal activity and aids in detoxification - which is all good news for acne sufferers.
Green tea extract is an extremely versatile herbal supplement - it can be administered topically, often being used in creams, taken as a in the form of a pill or incorporated into your diet and drunk as a tea.
This last method is very popular (Green Tea with Honeysuckle is often known as 'Pimple Tea' in many Chinatowns) when drunk after a meal it aids digestion and helps to detoxify your system, getting rid of the toxins that can cause acne. Tip: don't drink it with sugar, this will neutralize the worthwhile effects of the tea.
It seems that taking green tea for acne is a win-win situation… It has many beneficial properties which promote good all-round health with little or no known side effects and for the price, it's definitely a herbal treatment that's worth trying.

Abdominal fat, also known as visceral fat, or belly fat, is not just a matter of vanity anymore. Doctors are increasingly sounding the alarm about the health dangers of belly fat, as more Americans are diagnosed daily with obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
How to Lose Belly Fat: Secret #1- CLA
Scientists in Sweden have reported that patients taking conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA for short, lose fat- especially abdominal or belly fat. CLA is a special type of fatty acid, and is available in the U.S. without prescription.
In a 2001 trial, people taking 4 grams of CLA a day lost nearly 4% of their body fat over 12 weeks, with no other dietary or exercise changes.
Another Swedish study in 2004 found that CLA "might slightly decrease body fat in humans, particularly abdominal fat," without changing body mass index. No harmful side effects were reported.
A 2004 review study on weight loss supplements from Creighton University Medical Center reported that "results for conjugated linoleic acid were positive in three clinical studies, with few adverse effects."
A 4% reduction of fat may not sound like much, but its importance for your health can be profound. Doctors at Laval University in Quebec, who specialize in the study of abdominal fat, say that even a 5% to 10% reduction in belly fat can reduce your risk of diabetes and heart disease by as much as 60%.
While CLA may not be the cure for belly fat all by itself, it is certainly one way to target belly fat loss. In combination with some (or all) of the other powerful, proven methods I will share with you in this series, it could make a profound difference for your waistline- and your health.

Lycopene Effective with Prostate Cancer Treatment

Lycopene Effective with Prostate Cancer Treatment
 by: Darin Ingels

Men with prostate cancer who take supplemental lycopene in addition to surgical removal of the testicles may experience less active disease, less bone pain, and live longer than those who only have surgical removal of the testicles, according to a new study in British Journal of Urology International (2003;92:375–8). This is exciting news for millions of men who have to undergo aggressive treatment for advanced prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men over the age of 50 years, with more than 200,000 new cases each year in the United States. The cause of prostate cancer, like many other cancers, is unknown; however, some studies suggest alterations in testosterone metabolism may play a role in its development. Prostate cancer is generally slow growing and may not cause any symptoms until late in the disease. Symptoms may include frequent or painful urination, dribbling after urination, sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder, or blood in the urine. The symptoms of prostate cancer are similar to those of a non-cancerous condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), so men experiencing these symptoms should consult their physician for an accurate diagnosis.
In the new study, 54 men with advanced prostate cancer were randomly assigned to have surgical removal of the testicles (orchidectomy) alone or orchidectomy plus oral supplementation with 4 mg of lycopene a day. Measurements of PSA (a blood marker of prostate cancer activity), bone scans, and urinary flow were taken initially and every three months for two years. Men receiving lycopene started on the day of their surgery.
After six months, PSA had significantly decreased in both groups, indicating a reduction in prostate cancer activity. However, PSA levels in those receiving lycopene were more than 65% lower than in those who did not receive lycopene. After two years, PSA levels in the lycopene treatment group had fallen into the normal range, while those who only underwent surgery still had PSA levels more than twice the upper limit of normal. Urinary symptoms significantly improved in both groups, but better improvement was again observed in the lycopene group. The lycopene group also experienced less bone pain.
The survival rates after two years in the lycopene-plus-surgery group and surgery-only groups were 87% and 78%, respectively, a statistically significant difference. No adverse side effects were observed in men taking lycopene.LycopeneLycopene is one of a group of compounds called carotenoids. It is found in high amounts in tomatoes.
The findings of this study corroborate the findings of other similar studies examining the effectiveness of lycopene in the treatment of prostate cancer. However, the amount used in the current study (4 mg per day) was substantially less than the amounts used in other studies (30 mg per day). It may also help stimulate the immune system and has been shown to cause cancer cells to die on their own. Although more research is needed to clarify what amount of lycopene is most effective, men with prostate cancer may benefit from taking daily lycopene supplements. Eating one moderately sized tomato a day also provides approximately 4 mg of lycopene. Other tomato products, such as an 8-ounce portion of tomato juice or tomato paste may provide up to 25 mg of lycopene.

Facial Cleansing For Your Skin Type

Facial Cleansing For Your Skin Type
 by: Diana Clarke

Do you know best way to wash your face and which products to use? Dermatologists say that there are several ways to cleanse the face, but the ingredients that work for one person may not work for someone else. What's more, there is a barrage of new products to choose from.
To help you decide which methods and tools for cleansing the skin are best for you, dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, M.D., clinical associate professor in the department of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, N.C., discusses skin regimens that are appropriate for each skin type.
"There are an overwhelming number of facial cleansing products, implements and tools available today. The most important thing an individual can do to determine the best facial cleansing routine is to visit a dermatologist who can provide recommendations based on the patient's skin type and lifestyle," said Dr. Draelos.
According to Dr. Draelos, there are three methods to cleanse the face: facial cleansers implements cleansers and tools. Facial Cleansers – Soap
Dermatologists don't recommend the use of soap on the face. In particular, a type of deodorant soap, comber, contains fragrance and harsh detergent, which is more suitable for the body.
Mild soap-free cleansing bars composed of synthetic detergent, called syndets contain a low pH. A low pH is more acidic, so it doesn't disturb the acid coating of the skin. A high pH, which is more alkaline, would disturb the skin's acid mantle and thus irritate the skin. However, facial cleansing bars may not remove oil from an oily complexion. Therefore, liquid facial cleansers would be more suitable for this skin type.
Lipid-free Cleansers
"Lipid-free cleansers are best for patients with excessively dry or sensitive skin," said Dr. Draelos. "However, they are not very effective at removing oil or environmental dirt and are only recommended where minimal cleansing is needed." Ingredients in lipid-free cleansers include glycerin, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, sodium laurel and sulfate, among others. Dermatologists don't recommend this type of cleanser for skin with acne because the product would moisturize the skin.
Cleansing Cream
Cleansing creams contain water, mineral oil, petrolatum and waxes. They are best for those with dry skin. Cleansing creams cleanse the skin as well as remove cosmetics.
Abrasive Scrubs
Abrasive scrubs not only cleanse the skin but also exfoliate it. "Scrubs were developed after it was found that exfoliating produced smoother skin," stated Dr. Draelos. "The challenge with abrasive scrubs is that the scrubbing granules can cause irritation, redness or slight wounds on the face."
Those with sensitive skin should not use harsh, abrasive scrubs that contain, among other ingredients, aluminum oxide particles and ground fruit pits. But even those with sensitive skin may use a mild facial scrub that contains polyethylene beads or sodium tetraborate decahydrate granules, added Dr. Draelos.
Skin Cleansing Tools
Skin cleansing tools were developed for those who want to achieve thorough facial cleansing. "Individuals who use implements or tools with cleansers often feel that they are getting a deeper clean, but cleansing involves the chemical interaction of the cleanser with the skin accompanied by the physical act of scrubbing," said Dr. Draelos. "Dermatologists can help individuals select the appropriate implement or tool to include in a good facial hygiene routine."
Woven Mesh
This implement helps cleanse and exfoliate the skin. Non-woven, polyester fiber sponges are too harsh on the skin. However, woven mesh sponges are appropriate for most skin types, are gentler, and contain a mild cleanser.
Face Cloths
Disposable facial cleansing cloths release a foaming cleanser when wet. "The recent addition of humectants and emollients to these cloths can decrease the damage to the skin's natural barrier that occurs during cleansing and help smooth the skin," stated Dr. Draelos. "These ingredients also are especially beneficial for those of us with dry skin who need to wash frequently."
Loose, open-weave cloths help exfoliate the skin and are recommended for sensitive skin. Tight or closed-weave cloths also exfoliate the skin but to a greater extent. These are recommended for oily skin.
Cleansing Pouch
The cleansing pouch contains two fiber cloths with different size holes. The Size of the hole determines the amount of cleanser that is released onto the skin.
Face Brush Individuals can use the facial cleanser they choose with this electric cleansing brush that contains an oscillating brush head with soft bristles.
"While each of these cleansers and tools offers unique advantages, ultimately, working with a dermatologist to determine the skin's tolerance for certain cleansing ingredients is the best way to keep facial skin clean and healthy," said Dr. Draelos.

Color Contact Lenses - Your Options

Color Contact Lenses - Your Options
 by: Brad Triggs

Very few people are actually satisfied with their appearance. Some will go to great lengths to achieve a look that they consider acceptable. If you wear contacts and you're interested in changing your appearance but you want to use a subtle approach, you may want to consider color contact lenses. You can choose from a variety of natural s including blue, hazel, and green. There are numerous types of these lenses available that vary in the amount of tint used to create the lenses. If you have trouble seeing your contacts during insertion, for example, you don't want to actually change the of your eyes; you just want to be able to see your contacts better. Contacts with a light tint would work better for you.
Color contact lenses aren't just for people who require corrective lenses. There are just as many types of non-prescription contacts that can alter and/or enhance your eyes available. Of course you should obtain assistance from an eyewear professional so that the contacts fit securely on your eyes, and also to obtain important information regarding the use and care of the lenses. Color contact lenses are becoming more common for athletes interested in improving their skill. Race car drivers, for example, can benefit from color contact lenses with an amber tint because this can filter out shadows that can interfere with the driver's vision.
Have you ever noticed someone's eyes that you were certain were not their own? One of the issues associated with wearing color contact lenses is buying a set that complements your eye and skin . If your skin and eyes are naturally light, you have the good fortune of being able to wear just about any type of ed lenses. People with dark eyes and/or skin are best suited with opaque lenses. Instead of covering the eye with a solid , opaque color contact lenses actually complement the natural of the eye using a pattern of several s. If your eyes are somewhere in the middle or you want to try a in contrast to your eye , you should contact an eye specialist to discuss your options.

Protein For Healthy Living

Protein For Healthy Living
 by: Nadia Williams

According to the latest statistics, the obesity epidemic continues to grow worldwide and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. An astonishing 59.6% of Australian and New Zealand adults are overweight or obese, while 30% of Australian and New Zealand children are clinically overweight. Those who have adequate amounts of protein in their diet, however, may find they've escaped being part of this alarming trend. That's because the latest nutritional research indicates that protein has numerous dietary benefits that give a boost to weight-loss and weight-management efforts.
One of the principal advantages of protein is that it creates a feeling of fullness and satisfaction in the body that makes overeating much less likely. Besides being filling, protein is a smart addition to any weight loss or weight management program because of the effect is has on carbohydrate cravings. As nutritional research has documented, carbohydrates trigger the brain to crave more carbohydrates, leading to a cycle of carbohydrate eating that becomes hard to control. Protein can block that triggering effect in the brain. If you eat protein with a carbohydrate it will reduce the cravings caused by eating the carbohydrate.
You can see why simply adding protein to a meal provides you with an incredible advantage in your quest to lose or maintain weight. But protein provides more than just weight benefits – it provides you with an important necessity as well. Adequate daily protein intake is essential for building and maintaining lean muscle mass. It may sound like a term that applies only to athletes, but in fact, everyone has a certain percentage of lean muscle mass, in their body. The higher your percentage of lean muscle mass, the more calories you can burn in a day.
Besides determining how many calories you burn each day, lean muscle mass also serves a vital function for those trying to lose or maintain their weight. If your diet does not contain enough protein to build or maintain lean muscle mass, your body will begin to lose weight from the heart, muscle and organs. This type of dieting is unsafe and can even prove fatal. So how much protein do you need every day? Women need approximately 100 grams of protein a day while men need approximately 150 grams of protein a day. But when you incorporate protein into your diet, remember that not all protein is equal when it comes to calories. For example, a serving of prime rib has 1500 calories!

Hair Transplant Methods

Hair Transplant Methods
 by: Karen Brown

When dealing with the issue of losing hair, in some cases, individuals choose to use hair transplants as a treatment. A hair transplant basically means to take hair from one area of the head with hair and root it into another area of the head without hair. Then, the hair roots itself and begins to grow. In order to accomplish this task, there are different hair transplant methods to use. Below are the hair transplant methods and the details surrounding them.
First, one of the hair transplant methods is called the strip method, of the Follicular Unit Transplant. This method is generally the most popular type of hair transplant, partly due to the fact that it is usually the least expensive method. How this particular method works is a piece of skin is removed from the donor area of the head (the area that has hair). Then, the donor area is sutured closed. After this, the strip is divided into follicular units, which are individual hair groupings. In the bald area, hundreds to thousands of small slits are cut and the individual hair groupings are placed in them. Where the hair was implanted, there is a short-term rash. After a short period of time, the sutures are removed and the scalp is examined. Within about three to four months, the hair transplants should begin growing. This hair transplant method is usually fully done after a year, when the individuals may have normal hair cuts and be able to stop using vitamin supplements, volumizing shampoos, and other such hair loss products.
Second, another one of the hair transplant methods is Follicular Unit Extraction. In this particular method, tiny puncture holes are placed in the donor area of the scalp. From this holes, the follicular units are extracted. Although this method causes scarring, there is not as visible of a scar as from the strip method. After extracting the follicular units from the holes in the donor area of the scalp, the units are then placed into the small slits in the bald area of the head. Eventually, after a few months, hair will begin to grow from the transplants. Also, within a year this method should be complete, as with the previously mentioned method of hair transplant.
Although hair transplant methods may take time to grow hair and may cause scarring, the overall effect will eventually be a full head of hair. Instead of worrying about bald spots, individuals will have their natural hair growing. Depending on what type of hair transplant methods are chosen by these individuals, the scarring will be different. With the Follicular Unit Transplant method, the persons undergoing this treatment will have a suture scar on the back of their head, or donor spot. For those persons choosing the Follicular Unit Extraction method, they will have multiple small scars over the back of their head, or donor area. Hair transplant methods usually vary in the way that hair is extracted. However, the outcome of the transplant – growing hair – is the same.

Elliptical Crosstrainer Benefits

Elliptical Crosstrainer Benefits
 by: Kathryn O'Neill

Considering an elliptical trainer? Wondering how an elliptical trainer can benefit you?
This article will list several unique benefits of working out with an elliptical trainer. If you're trying to decide between an eliptical trainer and another piece of exercise equipment, here are some unique elliptical trainer benefits:
· No Impact:
Recently my 60-year-old mother tried my elliptical trainer and she was shocked at how easy it felt on her joints (she's a regular treadmill user).
Elliptical trainer workouts are safe on the joints and provide a no impact workout (as opposed to a treadmill where you feet hit the deck with every step). This is ideal for people with back, knee, hips and joint problems as well as older people looking for a no-impact workout.
· Weight Bearing Exercise:
While using an elliptical machine gives you a no-impact workout, the resistance exercise still helps to build bone density and fight off osteoporosis.
As well, weight-bearing exercise helps you burn calories much more efficiently (and keeps your calorie burn high for several hours after a workout)
· Saves Time
Because most elliptical trainers incorporate upper body arms, elliptical workouts tend to involve the whole body and give you an overall better workout - meaning you burn more calories in less time. That's always a benefit.
Elliptical trainers have also been proven to offer a lower 'Perceived Rate of Exertion' when working out. This means that you're doing more work and burning more calories while feeling like you put out less effort.
· Fights Boredom & Great For Crosstraining
Because elliptical trainers are a mix between the treadmill and a stair climber you have a great opportunity to cross-train.
I was actually shocked when, after using my elliptical for a month, I could easily climb a very steep hill that had almost wiped me out before. My fitness level had skyrocketed and I didn't even know it.
Plus, the fact that you can move backwards on an elliptical as well as download workout programs from the Internet (with iFit compatibility that many ellipticals offer), you won't get bored easily. That means more workouts and more calories burned!
· Space Efficient
Most elliptical trainers are smaller than a treadmill and can be more easily moved to clean or to store away when company is coming. If you are cramped for space or have a smaller home gym, an elliptical trainer can be a great way to save space while getting an overall body workout
So those are some of the most prevalent benefits of using an elliptical trainer. Keep in mind that elliptical trainers are not for everyone. However they do offer some great workout features that would benefit any athlete - from beginner to elite!

Looking through Terri Schiavo.s Eyes

Looking through Terri Schiavo's Eyes
 by: RobinRenee Bridges

I'm a chaplain, and I thought some of you might be interested in a very different point of view about this. I'm not suggesting that you believe me, nor am I arguing for a "side." This is just what the Sanctuary teached, and this is what I believe.
Terri's soul is alive and well, and it's still attached to her body. The essence of Terri, her soul, is not in some state of limbo. Her soul is aware of everything going on around her just like near-death experiencers can be aware of their surroundings. Terri is actively participating in a spiritual change in society. This is a test for us…to see if we are spiritually mature enough to do the right thing.
And what is the right thing in God's eyes? God gives life, and He brings it home when it's time.
To withhold food and water from any living creature with a soul is unthinkable. Even though Terri's brain might not be aware of it, and even though she might not suffer physically from it, our society would be held accountable for its choice. Food and water is not a matter of artificially extending life. It's an act of mercy. If Terri is given food and water, her body will digest and metabolize it. When it's time for Terri to die, her body will stop doing that.
We all understand the difference between being humane and artificially extending life. When Terri's lungs stop functioning, it will be because her soul has shut them down. When she stops metabolizing food and water, it will be because her soul has shut down her digestive system.
The Sanctuary teaches that the soul is the "living" part of us. The physical body is just a temporary chemistry and physics lab. When the soul detaches, the body dies. The soul is not "inside" the body. It interfaces with the body at the autonomic nervous system.
The soul is the source of all our thoughts, comprehension, imagination, and memories. (Neuroscientists have recently discovered that those are not in the brain. They're still trying to figure it out.) Terri, the living, thinking, remembering part of her (her soul) is not horrified with the condition of her body. It's not important to her anymore. What is important to her is the spiritual growth that can come out of the furor going on all around her.
And she's praying for us.

Walking for Your Health

Walking for Your Health
 by: J. Raizel

Walking is the easiest way of exercise because it is accessible at anyplace, anywhere and anytime. Several studies show that walking can: reduce high cholesterol and improve blood lipid profile reduce body fat enhance mental well being increase bone density, hence helping to prevent osteoporosis reduce the risk of cancer of the colon reduce the risk of non insulin dependant diabetes help to control body weight help osteoarthritis help flexibility and co-ordination hence reducing the risk of falls
Although walking can reduce body fat for weight loss purpose, it is actually not an effective option of exercise, because it doesn't burn lots of calories and only bring small increase in metabolism. In fact, you will have to walk for hours everyday if you want to burn fat! High intensity cardiovascular or aerobic exercise 2-3 times a week will be much more effective in burning off the excess body fat or losing weight.
Walking is more effective if maintaining or controlling your body weight. Walking at a faster pace can help improving cardiovascular function and fitness level, while walking at a slower pace can help building up endurance because of longer exercise time. In this case, speed and distance does matter. The faster and the further a person walks, the more calories he will use. So, what to do now? Depends on your goals, if you want to lose weight and love walking, you can combine them together in your exercise schedule, 2-3 times a week for high intensity cardio or aerobic exercise and 2-3 times a week walking with your family, and make sure be free one or two days. If you want to reduce risk of diseases or maintaining body weight / health, walking 2-3 times a week will help.

Health is Not What You Think

Health is Not What You Think
 by: Dr. Jamie Fettig

What is health?
Everyone wants this thing called health, and yet most people have never thought about what their "target of health" actually looks like. If you and your family were healthy, what would it be like?
It is like this: Imagine you are shooting a bow and arrow at a definite target and you have no idea what the target is. What do you think the chances are that you will hit the target? Not very good. Knowing what the target is dramatically increases the chances of you hitting the target. Everyone usually has some definition of health but that is kind of like saying the target is round. A definition doesn't help much.
What would you feel like, what would your kids do, and what would life look like? Get a clear target of what you being healthy would actually be like. Instead of just shooting for some ambiguous non-defined target, figure out your target. How much energy will you have, what will happen to your symptoms and disease, and how else will you be free? Simply knowing your target dramatically increases the odds of you hitting it.
When you actually know what your target is, how do you get it?
Nature works mostly on the principle of thing and no thing. Light is the thing and darkness is the absence of light. Sound is the thing and silence is the absence of sound. Health is the thing, and symptoms and disease are the absence of health. But some time back they got mixed up. Somehow symptoms and disease became the thing, and once you treated away the symptoms and disease, you would be left with health. And yet most people know that health is more than the absence of symptoms and disease. So what does this mean? It means you have to do something other than treat symptoms and disease to be healthy.
Let me show you why. If there are shadows or darkness in a room, the only way to get light in the room is by turning on the light. No matter how many ways you can measure and quantify shadows, you cannot sweep them under a rug, cut them out of the room, or invent some chemical to get rid of the shadow. The only thing you can do is turn on the light.
Health is the thing. And no matter how many ways you can measure and quantify symptoms and disease, the only way to be healthy is to add to your health.
So what adds health into your life? I have boiled it down to 7 simple things.
Listening to your inner knowing – that gut feeling, instinctual response type knowing everyone has – listen to it.
Rest – and not just sleeping, actually resting, which can be sleep.
Breathing Fresh Air – breathe in fresh air deeply and fully every day.
Food and Water – everyone is different, make sure whatever you choose to eat or drink is fresh and pure. No one diet is right for every one.
Sunlight – get healthy amounts of it.
Activity – both physical and mental activity. The best form of activity is the one you will actually do. It doesn't have to be the same thing every day.
Consciousness – being conscious or aware as you are doing all of the above and living your life.
And the greatest part about all of this is that 1+1+1 = 9. It is not linear. Each thing you do and every time you do it exponentially adds to the others, adds to your health.
Get your target and add to your health. Simple.

Upside-Down World

Upside-Down World
 by: Vernon Stent

Why are so many more people frightened of aeroplane journeys rather than car journeys? The risk of being injured in a car is far greater than being injured in an aeroplane. I can offer this theory: it's because aero crashes are so rare and auto crashes are so commonplace. This may sound like strange logic, but it's simple really. Does every car crash get reported on the news? Of course not! There are too many of them. The carnage and misery from auto crashes is so common that it is rarely reported. Yet, a rare aeroplane incident, even a minor one, can reach the headlines.
This is because news is reported by exception. Usually, only out-of-the-ordinary events are reported. In a generally good world (well I think so, anyway) we are fed mainly bad news stories. Understandable, as bad news is the exception. Trouble is, this gives us an upside-down view of the world. Some of the greatest killers in our world, such as cigarettes, automobiles, AIDS and cancer continue to cause such mass misery, virtually unnoticed, except by those directly affected.
Just take this litmus test: how many people do you know who have been involved in an aeroplane crash, or even near miss? Now think how many people you know who have been involved in road traffic accidents. Come to think of it, how many people do you know that have won the lottery? And that's the thing. Your odds of perishing in an aeroplane accident or nearer to the odds of winning the lottery.
A similar thing could be said of crime. Murders are high up the news agenda. Why? Because they are the exception and not the rule. I think that most of us appreciate that we don't live in a society where murders are so common that the news media give up reporting them (OK, so there may be some sad exceptions).
One very common problem, and another hidden killer, is food poisoning or food infection. Now, back to the litmus test: how many times have you had an upset tummy, brought about, so you suspect, by eating infected food? Was it reported on the news? No, nor were the other millions of cases around us. This may shock you, but on average, 234 people die annually from aeroplane accidents in the U.S. compared with 5,000 deaths from food poisoning. The chances of us getting ill from some kind of food poisoning is 1 in 10 and this figure may be conservative because food poisoning is often not reported.
But who, or what causes food poisoning? Well, there are many reasons, such as poor personal hygiene or mixing cooked and raw meats. And, of course a very common cause can be found flying in the air. But these are not aeroplanes; these are disease carrying house flies – a very common source of food poisoning.
Eliminating this risk requires some simple precautions such as personal hygiene and sealing open food when not in use. Oh, and what could be simpler and more obvious than buying a fly killer machine? Have a look at the fly killers at www.eeeee.co.uk
I know that food infections, fly killer machines and the rest will not make front page news, but I would be happy to walk down any street at night or to ride in any aeroplane, than risk being poisoned by fly infected food.

Costume Contact Lenses . Be Noticed in the Crowd!

Costume Contact Lenses – Be Noticed in the Crowd!
 by: Tanya Turner

Costume contacts have always been a favorite tool of movie costume designers. What makes a werewolf appear like a real monster and not just an actor in a costume? The eyes, of course! The eyes make the entire image seem real and very believable.
But the days when theatrical lenses were available only to movie stars are long gone. Now everybody can get a pair of costume contacts that makes their eyes appear bright and inhuman. The only limit is your imagination.
Many people think of theatrical contact lenses only at Halloween time. But there is no reason why you can't wear them just for going out to the club. If your eyes look like you just came back from Dune, you can be sure that your appearance won't go unnoticed.
What are my choices?
There are many costume lenses on the market; the most popular brands are Crazy Lenses, by Cooper Vision, and Wild Eyes, by CibaVision. Both Crazy Lenses and WildEyes offer bright, exciting designs. Their lenses are also comfortable and affordable.
If you type "costume contact lenses" into a Google or Yahoo search, many different collections will show up. Some of them offer a great look for a reasonable price. However, you should always bear in mind that most paints are toxic; so some of the lenses on offer might seem beautiful, but the could also irritate your eyes. It is always best to go with costume contacts produced by major contact lens manufacturers.
And for a particularly magnificent effect, you can get scleral contacts. Unlike ordinary color contact lenses, sclerals cover not only the colored part of your eye, but the entire visible portion of your eye. Sclerals create a knock-out effect. The only draw back with scleral contacts is that they are awfully expensive.
You can also get custom-made costume lenses. This way, you can be sure that nobody would have eyes like yours, and you can have any design imaginable.
You can see pictures and reviews of different costume contact lens collections at http://www.1-contact-lenses-consumer-guide.com/costume-contact-lenses.html
Do I need a prescription for costume contact lenses?
Most brand name costume contacts come in Plano (no vision correction) as well as with corrective powers. And whether or not you need visual correction, you should ask your eye doctor to fit costume lenses for you. Even if you have perfect vision, it is best to see an optometrist first.
Can I see while wearing theatrical contacts?
Yes, you can. Even though the lens is completely opaque, its center is clear so you can see. The only exceptions are white-out contacts, which create the effect of blind eyes. In this case, the entire lens is fully opaque so, unless you want to find out how it is to be blind, you should wear a white-out contact lens in one eye only.
Are costume contacts safe?
There are many FDA warnings about the dangers of costume lenses, although the lenses themselves are usually not to blame. Unfortunately, some people wear their costume contacts for several days straight, or put them in without washing their hands first, or swap the lenses with their friends, and then blame the theatrical contacts when they get an eye infection.
The truth is that if you get reputable brand name costume lenses and take proper care of them, costume contacts are as safe as any other type of contact lens.
Here are 5 simple rules, to keep costume contact lenses safe: Don't wear your costume contacts for longer than a few hours Don't swap them with other people Order your lenses from your doctor's office or a reputable online retailer. Contacts sold in costume shops or flea markets might be of questionable quality. Have an optometrist fit you with theatrical contacts Clean your costume lenses properly
How do I take care of my costume lenses?
Novelty contact lenses don't require any special care; you simply treat them the same way as you would treat any contact lenses.
All you need is a multi-purpose solution and a contact lens case, which you can get in any chemist shop. Rinse your lenses in the solution before inserting them in your eyes, and don't forget to wash your hands before handling the lenses.
When you're not using your costume lenses, keep them in the solution, in their case. It is recommended that you change the solution at least once a week, if you don't use them for long periods of time. But who would bother? If you have to wear contacts that have spent a month or so in their case, just give them a double rinse in fresh solution.

Diet Information..Your Key to Your Success!

Diet Information..Your Key to Your Success!
 by: The-Today-Diets

Do you find yourself asking all the right dieting questions but getting all the wrong answers? Are you tired of searching the internet and coming up with no real viable solution?
Dieting is extremely tough. For anyone who is overweight it's one of life's hardest endeavors. Social stigmas can cause a person struggling with their weight to feel inadequate, insecure and 'less of a person'. I know, I've been there and I fought the battle with every ounce of energy to win my life back.
Today dieting is getting harder and harder. The world is on an endless fast track to nowhere, and while you should have access to greater information about health, you are still struggling trying to figure out the basics. The media, the internet and even political agenda's can get in the way. Not to mention your friends, parents, spouse, children and every other person who deems themselves a dieting expert. You don't have time for opinions…your health is at risk.
What you need is information—a directory, a library of sorts that can point you in the right direction. Information gives you power and choices to make the 'right' decisions for you. No more letting yourself be manipulated by people 'who think they know everything', but really don't. What you need is a roadmap….a website that can direct you to your diet destination.
When it comes to diet success you need to keep in mind the elemental notion that the greatest achievements in life are accomplished by gathering information first!

Chocolate and Heart Health . Fact or Fallacy?

Chocolate and Heart Health – Fact or Fallacy?
 by: Nicholas Webb

Wouldn't it be wonderful if chocolate and heart health went hand in hand. However, there is so much information lately about the health benefits of chocolate that it is only natural that people get confused.
It is true, that if people only ate pure cocoa, then there might be heart health benefits. The problem is that most people eat processed chocolate bars containing sugar, corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, dairy cream not to mention other "baddies" contained in some of those tasty fillings. Some of these added ingredients can clog up arteries and create havoc to your waistline.
That said, you might be surprised to find out that chocolate isn't as bad as it was once thought. The fat content in chocolate, derived from cocoa butter contained in premium grade dark chocolate, is comprised of equal amounts of oleic acid (a heart-healthy monounsaturated fat also found in olive oil), stearic and palmitic acids. Stearic and palmitic acids are forms of saturated fat – not so good. Saturated fats are linked to increases in LDL-cholesterol and risk of developing heart disease.
Research indicates that stearic acid appears to have a neutral effect on cholesterol; neither raising nor lowering LDL-cholesterol levels. Palmitic acid on the other hand, does affect cholesterol levels but only comprises one-third of the fat calories in chocolate. Therefore, if we base our chocolate eating habits on latest research, the fat issue isn't so worrying.
Beware milk chocolate may not be so heart healthy
When we eat milk chocolate or lower grade chocolate, part of the total fat content comes from milk fat or various other types of fat contained in the processed chocolate, and not from the pure cocoa, which do adversely affect cholesterol levels.
Despite all the good news on cocoa not raising LDL cholesterol, even dark chocolate is a very calorie-dense food, so while the fat content may not invite heart disease or clogging of the arteries, its regular consumption will add a lot of extra calories to someone's daily total. In fact, many chocolate bars list sugar as the number one ingredient. And as we all know lots of white refined sugar is not going to help you keep your waistline nice and slim. Remember obesity is a serious risk factor for developing heart disease.
Concerning cholesterol, new and yet-to-be-published studies are showing that some antioxidants contained in chocolate, in particular dark chocolate and cocoa powder, may actually increase "good" (HDL) cholesterol levels by as much as 10 percent.
In the studies, the selected people ate 22 grams of cocoa powder and 16 grams of dark chocolate every day The result: Their "bad" (LDL) cholesterol was less susceptible to oxidation, a process that normally leads to artery-clogging plaques. While many people take vitamins and other antioxidants to help prevent plaque development, the study shows that cocoa could help.
In summary, whether chocolate and heart health do walk hand in hand is still an open topic, however, in moderation it won't do your heart any harm, however, watch those calories. Most of all, enjoy it cause it tastes so good!

Proper Nutrition Can Make Your Kid a Top Student

Proper Nutrition Can Make Your Kid a Top Student
 by: Gobala Krishnan

It is important that your child gets his or her nutrition early on, preferably form Grade 1. This is the most important time for brain development, as they start to learn new things and create new ideas all the time. Brain development revolves around getting the right amount of:
1) Glucose – Simply put, it is the blood sugar level. Glucose provides energy, and is vital in determining attention span. Lack of glucose can cause your kid to feel sleepy in class. The most important meal is breakfast, and glucose should be a part of every child's breakfast, to ensure that the blood sugar level is maintained through out the day's activities. Kids who usually skip breakfast tend to have a shorter attention span and difficulty remembering their lessons.
2) Vitamin B – Vitamin B helps to release the energy in glucose. Lack of Vitamin B can cause aggressiveness and depression. There are 12 types of essential Vitamin B, so it may be difficult to get all in a meal. Cereals are a good provider of Vitamin B.
3) Iron – Helps to transport oxygen in the blood system to each individual cell, including brain cells. Lack of iron results in anemia, which is common in children who don't get a balanced diet. Besides having less attention span, iron-anemic children are less motivated to participate in challenging tasks that stretch their imagination and ability. Having a good selection of red meat, tuna, chicken, or leafy vegetables like legumes and broccoli, can give your kid all the iron he or she needs.
4) Folic Acid – Important in the formation of red and white blood cells. Lack of folic acid results in your kid feeling tired, irritable and forgetful. Food sources like fresh vegetables and fruits are good sources of folic acid.
5) Zinc – Important to maintain communication between nerve cells and brain cells. Deficiencies in zinc can cause your kid to have difficulty solving academic problems, something the medical world calls cognitive impairment. Zinc in its natural form can be found in cereals and peanuts.
6) Vitamin A – An important nutrient for the nervous system of a fetus. Vitamin A is most commonly found in beta carotene, from dark leafy vegetables and orange or yellow fruits.
How to Ensure Your Kid Gets the Right Nutrition
A healthy, balanced diet, consisting of the right amount of cereals, meat, fish, vegetables, fiber-rich fruits, and lots of clean, unprocessed water will provide your child with the magic formula to succeed in school, both academically and in sports. Does that mean that the parents of 'A' students go out shopping each day, cook their own food, and sit down with their kids on the breakfast table to ensure that they eat what they're supposed to?
Not necessarily. Parents are discovering the importance of nutritional supplements to balance out their diet, as well as their children's diet. Nutritional supplements provide the answer to the close the gap created by a busy lifestyle and the need for better health. Adults can take multivitamins and mineral supplements out of their own determination for better health. Children, on the other hand, especially the younger ones, need to be educated, tricked or forced to take nutritional supplements. Any way you do it, it has to be done for the better future of your child.
Kids generally detest swallowing any sort of multivitamin pill, especially if it's like really huge ones or if it tastes bad. Understandably for them, taste is more important than the benefit of the pill. Educating your kid is important in the long run, but younger children need to be introduced to supplements in a more subtle way. one good way is by giving them chewable supplements, which disguise the fact that they are supplements by giving a good taste and flavor. Kids are generally more receptive to taking chewables than regular pills.
Another trend today is taking liquid nutritional supplements. Liquid nutritional supplements go one step further than chewables by eliminating the need of pill forms. Liquid nutrition can be diluted and mixed into our drinks, cereals and whatever else you eat during the course of a day. Children today love taking liquid supplements that are mixed into their orange juice or other beverage. Even adults who hate taking pills are attracted to liquid multivitamin supplements. Liquid nutrition is also more readily and easily absorbed by the body.
Start Early to Determine Success
If you really want your kid to grow up smart and popular in school, you have to start early. Mothers should take Vitamin B supplements during their pregnancy months to ensure complete fetal growth. Even though nutritional supplements are generally not recommended to kids below 2 years, ensure that from that age on your children are introduced to taking chewable or liquid nutritional supplements.
Grade A students and kids who excel in school generally don't have anything special that your kid does not already have. The only difference is that they have parents who emphasize the benefits of good nutrition. Now that you know their secret, start today by analyzing your kid's eating habits and take action to change their life, and yours.
