Muscle Fitness . Can Yoga Make You Stronger?

Muscle Fitness – Can Yoga Make You Stronger?
 by: Della Menechella

Many people wonder if yoga can improve their muscle fitness. They recognize that yoga can help reduce stress and increase flexibility, but when it comes to increasing muscle fitness, they think it might be a little too 'weak' to do the job. The fact is that yoga can definitely make you stronger.
A study was conducted at the University of California at Davis. Ten college 'coach potatoes' adopted a yoga routine for eight weeks. Each week, they attended from two to four classes during which they spent 10 minutes on breath control, 15 minutes of warm up exercises, 50 minutes doing yoga asanas, and then 10 minutes of relaxation/mediation. At the end of the eight-week period, the researchers measured the students' fitness and discovered that their muscular strength had increased by up to 31%, their muscular endurance improved by 57%, their flexibility increased by 188%, and their cardio respiratory fitness improved by 7%. These results are pretty amazing when you consider that the study was only conducted for eight weeks.
How can something that seems so benign have such a major impact on muscle fitness?
MUSCLE STRENGTH - Unlike traditional weight building exercises, in yoga your body provides the resistance. While you are not likely going to produce the bulked up muscles of some weight lifters, you will certainly increase your muscle strength.
Many poses in yoga are done very slowly or you stay in the posture for several breaths. It is much more challenging to your muscles to hold a pose or do it slowly than it is to allow momentum to move you through an action. I have been working out with weights for many years so my muscles are used to being strengthened. Yet, I have practiced certain yoga routines during which my muscles screamed for mercy and I actually had to get out of the pose and then resume it because my muscles were so challenged. I don't often experience this during weight training sessions.
In addition, some balance postures such as Tree Pose and Shoulderstand require enormous muscle control in order to prevent you from falling over. This helps to build and strengthen your muscles.
MUSCLE BALANCE - In weight training, you isolate a specific muscle as you perform an exercise and this leads to a short, tightened muscle. The muscles you develop during yoga are more likely to be elongated, because while you are strengthening them, you are simultaneously lengthening them. You also do not focus on an isolated muscle, but actively recruit the smaller muscle groups as well. You truly work your entire body when you practice yoga.
Practicing yoga can help realign your muscles, so they are more balanced. Since you are not overworking any specific muscle group, you are less likely to get injured.
In addition to all its other benefits, yoga can help you improve muscle fitness. Whether you choose to use it as your primary means of strength training or you want it to supplement your other exercises, yoga can help your muscles grow fit, balanced, and strong.

The History of Yoga

The History of Yoga
 by: Della Menechella

The history of yoga is long and steeped in tradition. Contrary to what some people may believe, yoga was not developed as the newest way to slim down so they could fit into a smaller pants size.
The history of yoga goes back 5,000 years. It originated in India, and the first time the word yoga was found in written form was in the Rig Vada, one of the sacred texts used by Vedic priests. Yoga is a means of achieving spiritual enlightenment.
Originally, yoga techniques were passed down from teacher to student through word of mouth. These techniques had never been written down until the Indian sage Patanjali wrote down a systematic method of yoga in the Yoga Sutras. Patanjali is considered to be the father of yoga.
According to Patanjali, there are eight limbs of yoga, which lead to the ultimate goal of enlightenment.
YAMA - abstaining from violence, stealing, lust, greed
NIYAM - developing devotion, purity, studiousness, contentment, discipline
PRANAYAMA - controlling the breath
PRATYAHARA - going inward and withdrawing attention from the outside world
DHARANA - concentration
DHYANA - meditation
SAMADHI - merging with the universal consciousness
The Swami Vivekananda added to the history of yoga by bringing it to America. In 1893, he addressed the Parliament of World Religions and discussed the path of yoga. As a result of his speech, it quickly began to blossom as a practice in many areas of the country. Yoga has since gained major popularity in the United States and many different styles including Hatha, Bikram, and Iyengar, are practiced by millions of people.
Knowing the history of yoga can help you, the practitioner, realize the richness that it has to offer. More than just a means of being fit and trim, yoga can help you live a healthy, whole, and empowered life.

Sinus Infection Caused by Dental Problem

Sinus Infection Caused by Dental Problem
 by: Marlon D. Ludovice

Everyone has a sinus on each side of their nose called the maxillary sinus. Wherein, the roots of the upper back teeth go into the right and left maxillary sinuses. This can cause a problem during sinus season. If a sinus has an infection, it can fill up with fluid and cause the entire sinus lining to become inflamed. If encountered by patients they will feel pain in their upper back teeth along with a metallic taste in the mouth. Threatening a major dental problem if continuously endure.
Both of the maxillary sinuses drain into the nose. Nothing much really happens in the sinus except when the exit into the nose is blocked. Swelling in the nose can cause blockage of the sinus outlet and fluid builds up in the sinus. And when the sinus fills up with fluid, bacteria can grow in the fluid because the sinus is warm, dark, and moist. The problem started with the nose blocking up and this is usually caused by nasal and breathing allergies.
This concerns the dentists. Because continued nasal and sinus problems can lead to poor dental development. Wherein, if problems transpire longer can make doing orthodontics very difficult. It is necessary to consult dentist if symptoms persist. Regular check up will help you monitor your status about the disease.
But for the short term, a patient can spray their nose with sea salt spray. This moistens the nasal area and can loosen the snot blocking the sinus exit. Take hot showers and breathe in the hot spray to moisten your nose. Finally, fill up your tub and just let the water evaporate so that the air will stay moist. Lots of sinus problems happen when the heating or cooling systems dry out the air because this dries out your nose.
Caring for your nose and your teeth is the most helpful thing to do in order to prevent at least the effect and occurrence of a sinus infection. So if you are afraid to encounter such terrible sickness…love your whole body that is the least thing to do!

Is It an Allergy, Intolerance or Sensitivity?

Is It an Allergy, Intolerance or Sensitivity?
 by: Marlon D. Ludovice

Any adverse reaction encountered by a person is often referred to as an allergy. This is said to be a rare case. Adverse reactions are often caused by an intolerance or sensitivity that has nothing to do with allergy.
According to the medical profession and studies shows that, an allergy involves the body's immune system. It is a hypersensitivity reaction of the immune system to foreign substances, which are normally considered harmless. What happens in an allergic reaction is the immune system reacts to an allergen, which in turn causes a person's own antibodies to attack the allergen. These antibodies are what produce various reactions.
Webster defines intolerance as "extreme sensitivity to a drug, food, or other substance." it does not involve the immune system. Symptoms vary and always been mistaken for those of an allergic reaction but, because the immune system does not react with an intolerance, it will be very difficult to determine its source. One thing more allergic reactions are usually immediate, intolerance reactions can be delayed.
Other people believe that sinusitis is about allergies to different elements such as dust, smoke and other elements that might brought them allergies. In addition to allergens and viral or bacterial infection, sinusitis can be triggered by exposure to noxious chemicals, smoke, and air pollution. Due to the variety of sinusitis triggers, various forms of treatment are available as preventative measures and symptom management. Allergy medicines such as decongestants and antihistamines can be taken at the start of an allergy attack to prevent the development of sinusitis, but once sinusitis develops further treatment is necessary.
It may be true that Nasal allergies cause nasal itching and sneezing, runny nose, nasal stuffiness and postnasal drainage. These symptoms are similar to those of sinusitis. Most experts believe nasal and sinus swelling from allergies can contribute to the development of sinusitis. However, other factors, such as chronic infection, also contribute significantly to the development of chronic sinusitis.
It is important to distinguish the allergies from sinus infection. An ordinary sinus allergy may lead to a more serious and fatal infection such us chronic sinusitis. Diagnosis is important in able to prevent it from becoming a major problem to your life.

Acute and Chronic Sinusitis: What About?

Acute and Chronic Sinusitis: What About?
 by: Marlon D. Ludovice

We often experience sinus problems especially when it is cold. And sometimes we just disregard the signs and symptoms we experience knowing it is only a simple cold symptom, however from simple cold develops into a sinus infection. How hard to spot the difference isn't it?
Here is a more specific presentation of the signs and symptoms of sinus infection depending upon which of the sinuses are affected and in cases where the infection is acute or chronic.
The following are the sinus infection cases under the Acute Sinusitis.
Frontal Sinusitis (located above the eyes in the region of the forehead) - In this case for sinus infection symptom there is severe ache in the forehead, fever, postnasal drip or nasal discharge and the sufferer is on a lot of pain when in a stretched out position but feels a bit better when the head is upright. Maxillary Sinusitis (located on either side of the nostrils in the cheekbones) - There is pain and pressure on one or both sides of the cheek; tenderness, redness and swelling of the cheekbone; pain is worse when the head is upright and feels better when in reclining position; pain across the cheekbone, under or around the eye or around the upper teeth; there is also nasal discharge.
Ethmoid Sinusitis (located behind the bridge of the nose and at the base of the nose between the eyes) - There is nasal congestion with nasal discharge; pain or pressure around the inner corner of the eye or on one side of the nose; headache in the temple or surrounding eye, pain or pressure symptoms worse when coughing, straining or lying back but better when the head is upright.
Sphenoid Sinusitis (located behind the ethmoid sinuses and the eyes) - The sinus infection symptom here are fever; nasal discharge; deep headache with throbbing pain behind and on top of the head, across the forehead, and behind the eye; pain is worse when lying back and bending forward; vision disturbances when pressure extends to the brain.
And for the sinus infection under Chronic Sinusitis here are the following symptoms.
Frontal Sinusitis –the sufferer will feel a constant low-grade headache in the forehead and accounted damage in the sinus area.
Maxillary Sinusitis - There's pressure below the eye, chronic toothache, discomfort throughout the day with amplified cough at night are some of the effects.
Ethmoid Sinusitis - There is chronic sore throat that causes bad breath; chronic nasal discharge, congestion, and a bit of discomfort across the bridge of the nose; worse pain in the late morning and when wearing glasses, recurs in other sinuses.
Sphenoid Sinusitis - The sinus infection symptom in this sinus is low-grade headache.
Anyone can be a victim of this infection. It may sound impossible to prevent this but on the contrary you can get yourself be cured. Just be vigilant to detect such symptoms and be ready to prepare a proper medication if persist.

The Code Of Life

The Code Of Life
 by: Jason Elkins

What if there was a solution to protecting and restoring your health. What if you could turn back the clock and return to when you were healthy. You wonder why we have such horrific health problems, yet its right in front of your eyes. You all know that nutrition is important, but do you know why. What if given the right nutrition your body could heal itself of anything, and I mean anything. What if this was true and all you needed to do was give your body the right nutrition.
Over half the United States population is undernourished and overweight; these two problems contribute to most of the disease and death in this country. The 1 trillion dollar food industry is directly tied to our health problems. Processed foods are a big problem for people's health today. Especially because processed foods are so hard to avoid. Many of these foods that we put into our bodies contain no essential nutrients that our bodies need. With these nutrients almost gone, our immune systems are breaking down and disease is taking over. Our bodies were not designed to be taking in these kinds of foods. Also, our fruits and vegetables don't have the nutritional value they once had. The main reason for this is because of green harvesting and the depletion of minerals in our soil.
People are now supplementing vitamins and minerals, with the hope of improving their health. Yet this is not enough, a huge misconception is that by taking vitamins, you are giving your body what it needs to be healthy. Unfortunately not all supplements are equal. Most vitamins and minerals are synthetic, and not easily absorbed by the body. You can test to see if your vitamins are synthetic by taking them with a glass of water and not eating anything for a couple of hours. If you start feeling sick then you know that these are synthetic vitamins. If all you are essentially taking are nutrients which are supposed to be food, then why do you have to eat food with them?
Scientists have recently cracked the code to nutritional supplementation. Scientists have for some time tried to figure out how our cells communicate with each other. We all know that when you cut yourself that your body naturally heals itself. We just didn't really know how it worked; we just knew that they did. Now Scientists have discovered how it works. It's sort of like how a blind person uses brail bumps to read writing. Blind people know how to read brail and therefore they know what it says. What would happen if some of the brail were scratched off? They would go from a level of communication to miscommunication. Our cells work the same; each cell has thousands of protein molecules, and attached to these are glycoforms. The cell uses glycoforms to enable them to effectively communicate to each other. Of the some 200 monosaccharides that occur naturally in plants, eight are known to be components of these glycoforms, and are used in cell-to-cell communication. These eight sugars are glucose, fucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylneuraminic acid. Of these sugars only two are commonly found in our diet. By supplementing these glyconutrients, your body can create these glycoform which make it possible to effectively fix anything that is wrong with your body. A company by the name of Mannatech owns the patent on the combination of these essential sugars. This means that you cannot get a combination of these sugars from anywhere else in the World. Glyconutritional products will play a huge role in the 21st century's emerging wellness industry. You can learn more about this technology by clicking on the link below, which will take you directly to my site. If you would like to see for yourself what glyconutrients could do for you then you can order directly on my site. I will personally make sure that you have an amazing product experience by keeping a health journal to keep track of the benefits that you will have had. What Is The Fountain Of Youth

What Is The Fountain Of Youth
 by: Jane Kriese

The fountain of youth is an alkaline body. An alkaline body is a body free from lifestyle diseases, and chemically balanced. The opposite of an alkaline body is an acidic body. An acidic body is said to have the medical condition called "Acidosis"
Acidosis is a condition in which body chemistry becomes imbalanced and overly acidic.
Symptoms with Acidosis include: frequent sighing, insomnia, water retention, recessed eyes, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine head aches, abnormally low blood pressure, dry hard stools, foul smelling stools accompanied by a burning sensation in the anus, alternating constipation and diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, burning in the mouth or under the tongue, sensitivity of the teeth to vinegar and acidic fruits, bumps on the tongue or the roof of the mouth.
Some causes of Acidosis are; kidney, liver and adrenal disorders, improper diet, malnutrition, obesity, ketosis, anger, stress, fear, anorexia, toxemia, fever, excessive amounts of aspirin and prescription drugs. Acidosis occurs when the body loses its alkaline reserves.
Do some of the conditions described sound like the problems of people suffering from old age? They probably do because aging is defined as an accumulation of acidic wastesin our body.
A simple test can be done to determine if you body is too acidic, too alkaline, or just right. Test your body often, this way you can monitor any changes and adjust your body accordingly.
This test is called your PH Test;
Purchase PH Paper, (from your health food store, the PH color graph will come with the paper), apply saliva /or urine to a piece of the paper .The paper will change color to indicate if your system is acidic or alkaline. Perform the test before eating or at least on hour after eating.
The scale called PH is;
1.01 to 6.9 is considered an acidic body
7.0 is neutral
7.1 to14.0 is alkaline
7.2 to 8.0 is the ideal alkaline level
Continue to test your PH level for the rest of your life, this is a good barometer to your internal health.
Are you concerned about your PH level? You should be, if you have an acidic body.
An acidic body corrodes your body tissue, your veins, your arteries. Your body becomes a host for numerous life style diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
To learn more about the connection to Cancer and your PH. Visit www.cureamerica.net
and refer to the book "The Calcium Factor". This marvelous book describes how calcium helps change an acidic body to an alkaline body.
Causes of your acidosis are mainly diet. Research shows that when your food is broken down, it leaves chemical, non combustible ash which when combined with body fluids, yields either acidic or alkaline potentials of PH. Certain foods are acid forming, while others are alkali-forming. So it stands to reason that to change your body from an acidic body to an alkaline body you need to change your diet.
The following is a list of Alkaline Forming Foods;
Avocados Honey
Corn Maple Syrup
Dates Molasses
Fresh Coconut Raisins
Fresh Fruits (most) Soy Products
Fresh Vegetables Umeboshi Plums
The citric acid in citrus fruits has an alkalizing effect on the system.
Low level Alkaline Forming Foods
Almonds Chestnuts
Black Strap Molasses Lima Beans
Brazil Nuts Millet
Buckwheat Soured Dairy products
The best alkaline forming drinks are;
Pineapple Juice, citric juices and Lemon water. To make lemon water; Add 1 tbsp. of lemon juice to all the water you drink. (Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day)
Avoid salt, antacids, alcohol, sugar & all white foods (white flour, white rice, and white pasta, white sugar).
Holistic cleanses are always an excellent way to change your health. Dr.J Rodrigo says;
"Almost all diseases begin in the digestive track. Your intestinal tract is the origin of disease and it is also the origin of your healing". To learn more about cleansing visit www.herbs4health.net, open the E book "9 Steps To A Healthy Vibrant Body" refer to Step Three, "Cleansing The Body". We should all cleanse our body at least twice a year.
Don't forget after you clean your body you need to feed your body. All acidic people need to take calcium with magnesium, and a multi vitamin with minerals. These products should be a liquid, plant extract.
Believe it or not, but an alkaline body is a disease free body. With an alkaline body you will look younger, and feel more energetic. You will have a healthy vibrant body.

Toxic Plastic Water Bottles

Toxic Plastic Water Bottles
 by: Debra Lynn Dadd

I recently received a question from one of my readers about the safety of drinking water from clear plastic water bottles. These bottles, made from Lexan polycarbonate resin (a plastic polymer), are widely used for single-serving sales to one-gallon of water in stores and home-delivery bottles.
Theee bottles appear to be safe because they do not impart any taste or odor to the water. Lexan polycarbonate is also used to make compact discs and DVDs, bulletproof windows, mobile phones, and computers.
The water delivery company sent my reader a notice saying that their Lexan polycarbonate bottles are perfectly safe to use. They suggested their customers visit a website that was designed to portray this plastic in a positive light.
But, actually, a toxic chemical is lurking in these bottles that does end up in the water you drink. Lexan used to be used to make baby bottles, but these are no longer sold. Hmmmmm...
STAY AWAY FROM BPA
In 1998, Dr. Patricia Hunt of Case Western University in Ohio discovered that one of the components of Lexan polycarbonate resin--bisphenol-A (BPA)--can leach into water from water bottles. BPA is a potent hormone disruptor. It can impair the reproductive organs and have adverse effects on breast tissue and prostate development.
Who do we believe? The water delivery company or Dr. Hunt?
I'm inclined to go with Dr. Hunt. I went to a website maintained by the authors of Our Stolen Future: How We Are Threatening Our Fertility, Intelligence and Survival, who are continuously searching the scientific literature for information on endochrine disruptors. The Our Stolen Future (http://www.ourstolenfuture.org/NewScience/oncompounds/bisphenola/bpauses.htm#recentimportant page on bisphenol-a) gives a whole page of links to scientific studies that show that BPA damages the endocrine system in a variety of ways.
BPA can leach from water bottles when exposed to heat and cleaning agents, but detectable levels of BPA can also leach into water from bottles just sitting at room temperature, according to a 2003 study conducted by the University of Missouri published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY
Is there is a level of BPA that may be acceptable? To answer that question we have to ask: acceptable to who? A healthy male? A woman? A child? The elderly? And how would you know how much leaching has occurred in the water? It could easily vary from day to day depending on how long the water had been in the bottle, whether or not the sun was shining on the bottle in the delivery truck, and a variety of other factors.
I'm concerned enough about the possible danger of BPA that I am no longer purchasing bottled water in plastic bottles.
Health concerns aside, plastic is also not good for the environment. Americans use about 10 million tons of plastic every year, but recycle only about two percent of it. A plastic milk jug takes about one million years to biodegrade. And, getting back to health concerns, the manufacture of plastics produces toxic wastes that return to us indirectly through polluted air, water, and soil.
But we also have to use common sense and choose the greatest benefit at any given time. If your choice was to drink spring water in the polycarbonate bottle or drink tap water or drink no water at all on a hot summer day, I would say drink the purer spring water in the polycarbonate bottle. Once in a while, a single exposure will not do much harm. But you don't want to be using water contained in a Lexan polycarbonate resin bottle as your everyday source of water supply, or drink from these bottles all day long, every day.
There are other options.
BETTER OPTIONS
My best recommendation is to get a good water filter that is right for your water and filter your water at home. That way there is no questionable leaching at all. Even though this may be expensive, it is one of the best investments you can make in your health and will save thousands of dollars in medical expenses in the long run.
For those of you who carry or purchase water in the small, single-serving Lexan polycarbonate bottles, you can purchase plastic-free refillable bottles in various sizes to suit your needs. They are lightweight and much more attractive than the disposable plastic bottles.
It's a good idea, particularly in the summertime, to carry clean water with you, as your body needs water throughout the day for good health. The Mayo Clinic suggests you divide your weight in half and drink that many ounces of water every day. So if you weigh 128 pounds, that would be 64 ounces or 8 8-ounce glasses of water per day. It's better to carry your own clean water in a safe container than drink tap water or water in a plastic bottle.
