Policosanol is a mixture of fatty alochols derived from sugarcane, yam or beeswax. It contains predominantly octanosol, triacontanol among other alcohols. It is very helpful in reducing cholesterol levels in people with abnormally high cholesterol.
High cholesterol can lead to heart disease and stroke. The changing lifestyles and dietary habits have led to people becoming overweight and obese. Thus, a large number of the population is suffering from high cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of fat generated by the body. There are two kinds of it – the HDL (high density lipoprotein) good cholesterol and the LDL (low density lipoprotein) bad cholesterol. Cholesterol is essential for the body functions but excesses cause problems.

The main benefit of Policosanol is that it reduces the amount of bad cholesterol in the body thereby cleaning the arteries and permitting free flow of blood through the body. LDL cholesterol is responisble for the formation of plaque which chokes up the arteries. By reducing LDL, Policosanol helps in providing unrestricted flow of nourishment to various parts of the body.
Secondly, Policosanol increases the amount of HDL or good cholesterol. This form of cholesterol takes the excess cholesterol to the liver where it can be re-utilized or destroyed, depending on the requirement of the body. HDL helps to break down the arterial plaque, so higher levels of HDL helps to clear the arteries for free flow of blood and reduces chances of cardiovascular disease.
Policosanol helps to fight atherosclerosis by removing the atheroma, the accumulation that generates this disease. Millions of people suffer from this disease the world over. Policosanol has been found very effective in studies in combating it.
The balancing effect that Policosanol has is mainly due to two reasons – firstly, it reduces the excess manufacture of cholesterol and secondly, it reduces any barriers to the breakdown of cholesterol. The mechanism of Policosanol is quite different from that of statin drugs commonly prescribed for high cholesterol patients. Policosanol reduces platelet aggregation or stickiness of platelets, thereby thinning the blood and allowing it to flow more freely.
A six-month study using a placebo-controlled group and 10mg of Policosanol reduced the total cholesterol by 16% and LDL cholesterol by 24% while increasing the HDL cholesterol by 29%. Other studies with policosanol and conventional medications show that 5mg to 20mg per day of policosanol showed better results than the statins lovastatin, pravastatin and simvastatin used to control cholesterol with fewer side effects. Statin drugs are known to cause liver and muscle problems, but policosanol has not shown any such side effects.
Policosanol may be helpful for other conditions as well, as preventing blood clotting by thinning the blood, improving leg pain in people with hardened arteries, reducing enlarged prostrate and reducing inflammations in rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Policosanol may be just the answer to solving cholesterol problems. To know how effective it is, please read the Doctor’s Report at
